Dior Eternal Gold (576) Eyeshadow Palette ($63.00 for 0.25 oz.) is a limited edition palette for the holidays. It was less impressive than Blazing Gold, but it wasn’t the worst Dior palette I’ve tried either, so I guess there’s that. I like the color concept (which is the norm for Dior!), but I wish these were less dusty/dry overall.

Eternal Gold #1 is a light-medium, meadowy green with warm, golden frost. It had semi-sheer color payoff with a dusty, thinner texture. It blended out okay on the skin, but I couldn’t build up the color at all. The color lasted for six hours before fading.

Eternal Gold #2 is a light, golden beige with a frosted sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a lightly dusty, but blendable, consistency that applied well to the skin. It wore for seven hours on me.

Eternal Gold #3 is a bright, white gold with a cooler white base paired with really yellow gold that gives it a more metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, smooth, lightly dense texture that was blendable and lasted for seven and a half hours.

Eternal Gold #4 is a soft, medium-dark plum with warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had decent color payoff with a lightly dusty texture that made it apepar a little drier on the lid, but I had no trouble blending and diffusing the edges. On me, it started to fade after seven and a half hours of wear.

Eternal Gold #5 is a deep black with subtle, warm brown undertones and lots of silver sparkle. The texture was very dense, more like a cream eyeliner to me, than a powder eyeshadow. I did have some trouble getting it to blend out without becoming patchy, as it was so thick. It did last for eight hours, though!

Dior Blazing Gold (886) Eyeshadow Palette ($63.00 for 0.25 oz.) is one of two, limited edition holiday quints available this year. The formula looked like it might be comparable to my beloved Bonne Etoile, but alas, it was not so. I think it ended up being better than some of the recent Dior palettes, but it isn’t without its issues. It seemed like a wet/dry formula when I was trying it, but I couldn’t find anything on Dior’s site about wearing it damp/wet, so the ratings reflect dry application only.

Blazing Gold #1 is a vibrant, medium cranberry red with warm, orange undertones and a pearly sheen. It was richly pigmented with a really smooth, dense consistency–almost like a cream. It was semi-sheer with a thinner texture, which made it harder to get the sparkle to stay on the skin. I would only use this patted over other eyeshadows or with an adhesive base. It was nicely pigmented, and it had a very dense, cream-like texture (I would have swore it was like a gel eyeliner). UPDATE:  Marc Jacobs Beauty has fixed packaging issues that resulted in the eyeliner formula drying out.  I found the following posted as a “review” on the product listing for the Highliner Eyeliner Set. I also purchased another set after I noticed Sephora restocked, and I can personally confirm that the eyeliners are much improved!  They feel and apply consistently with the better Marc Jacobs Highliners I have used in the past, not dry at all.  All seven shades were creamy and glided-on without tugging. Here’s hoping the full-sized eyeliners make it back soon as well.  Of course, I would have preferred to have seen MJB make the same overture as Bite Beauty did earlier this year and resend the non-defective set to customers who purchased a defective set. The review below has NOT been updated to reflect the update at this time.

Thank you for your review. The Sky-Liner Petite Highliner Gel Eye Crayon collection that is now available at Sephora is completely new and updated. Recently, Highliner experienced a temporary production issue with the cap—it wasn’t airtight, and was causing the formula to dry out. This issue is now fixed. Marc Jacobs Beauty pulled all Highliners from stores, reproduced them, tested them, and replaced them, including The Sky-Liner Set. We are so sorry if you have had a bad experience. We are confident that we have addressed the issue and we hope that you continue to love Highliner.

Marc Jacobs Holiday 2015 The Sky-Liner Highliner Gel Crayon Set ($48.00 for 0.07 oz.) includes seven, travel-sized eyeliners; two shades are limited edition and exclusive to the set, while five are from the permanent range. I don’t see it on Sephora currently, but it is still available through Marc Jacobs directly. I was really disappointed by the set, because every single eyeliner was dry as a bone when swatched to the point where just trying to swatch it resulted in all but one of the eyeliner’s tips breaking off. After the tip broke, the eyeliners were soft and creamy, which is why it’s so frustrating that the exterior coating to the pencil is so bad that it completely impedes the product’s performance. The one eyeliner that didn’t break still remains firmer and harder to use after three uses. This makes it harder to rate, because unless you break off the tip, they’re difficult and poor-performing, but since by the nature of just how firm they were, they inevitably broke (without me trying at all; in fact, I was trying NOT to!) and were much better. I’ve found that the full-sized, permanent formula has similar issues where some shades are creamy and easy-to-apply from the get-go and others are drier, firmer (and some have never gotten better for me). This inconsistency is the worst part about an otherwise impressive formula that wears nine to ten hours and comes in an assortment of more unique shades (some are more typical shades, of course). I didn’t have such significant texture issues with last year’s set. That being said, you will find the scores reflecting that these are not of the same quality as others I have tried (primarily in the overall quality and texture scores).

In the set, each pencil contains 0.37g/0.01 oz. while the full-sized eyeliners are 0.5g/0.01 oz. When I convert grams to ounces (using Google), 0.37g is really 0.0131 oz. and 0.5g is really 0.0176 oz. So this set contains 0.0917 oz. worth of eyeliner, or $130.26 worth of eyeliner. Or, if you’re not apt to finish products, for less than the cost of two shades, you get to try seven.

In the Buff is described as a “champagne shimmer.” It’s a light-medium, golden champagne with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had semi-sheer color payoff in one stroke, and it was fairly buildable to mostly opaque coverage. The texture was firm initially, but after the tip broke off, it was creamier and easier to apply. Express-Oh! is described as a “espresso shimmer.” It’s a blackened brown with subtle, gold pearl and a more satin-like sheen overall. It had semi-opaque coverage but was very, very stiff to work with and tugged on the lash line. This was the only pencil that didn’t have the tip break on me just by swatching lightly on my arm, and after three uses, it still remains pretty firm to use. (Stone)fox is described as a “metal gray.” It’s a dark, warm gray with silver sparkle and shimmer. The version in the set seemed to have more shimmer than the one I have in the full-size. The texture was firm until the tip broke off (just lightly swatching!! after the first broke, I was trying even harder not to break them, ha!), and the interior part of the portion was creamier but had some texture to it due to the amount of sparkle. It had semi-opaque coverage that built up to opaque coverage after two to three layers. It lasted for nine hours with some shimmer fall out.

The consistency was firm, and even after the tip snapped off, it wasn’t as creamy as the full-sized version I have (which is VERY creamy!). Tarte In Bloom Amazonian Clay Eyeshadow Palette ($45.00 for 0.63 oz.) includes twelve eyeshadows in a warmer, neutral-hued theme. I liked it overall, and I think if you normally use primer or have good luck with Tarte’s eyeshadow formula, you’ll likely enjoy the formula as well. I think it is, undoubtedly, dupable, and I think if they had opted for less warm-tones, it might have been more unique among the slew of neutral palettes previously released.

Charmer is a very light, neutral-to-warm-toned beige with a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, smooth consistency that was a little dusty but blendable. Smokeshow is a deep, blackened brown with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had fairly good pigmentation, but it is buildable, so if you want the deeper color as seen in the pan, it is possible. The texture felt smooth in the pan, but it was on the thinner side and had a tendency to turn patchy on me if I wasn’t very careful about placement and tools. It lasted well for eight hours. Leader is a dark, red-toned brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, and it was dry and thin, which just made it hard to use on the lid as it would apply unevenly and look even worse if blended (it is the type to stick and then not want to move from wherever it first stuck!). This one definitely needs primer underneath it, and I would highly recommend building it in layers or using it over a powder base (maybe Sweetheart or Smarty Pants). It is packed with larger, chunky glitter, which makes this shade more troublesome to use, as it tends to thicken on the lid and go on unevenly. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a lightly textured consistency from the amount of shimmer in it. The color went on evenly and smoothly, but the consistency is thinner so I felt like the shimmer emphasized lip lines to a small degree. As a note, I really think this might be Quiver from the Lip Color Shine range, just an opaque, less glossy version (the colors are nearly identical to me). Tom Ford Alex Lip Color ($35.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a bright, medium-dark fuchsia pink with cool, blue undertones and very fine fuchsia pearl. It had almost opaque coverage, but there was some translucency there that allowed the lip color to come through slightly. The texture was smooth and lightly creamy, so application was easy. Tom Ford Rocco Lip Color ($35.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a brighter, medium rose-shimmered fuchsia pink with cooler undertones and a metallic sheen. It was sligthly thicker in consistency, which made it feel creamier and apply with more opaque coverage for me. The color wore well for five and a half hours with a little bit of shimmer settling into lip lines after three hours of wear. It was neither drying nor hydrating. FORMULA OVERVIEW | Tom Ford Lips & Boys Lip Colors ($35.00 for 0.07 oz.) are “clutch-sized” lipsticks; it uses the same formula as the full-sized Lip Colors (which retail for $52 for 0.10 oz.), but the packaging feels the same, just smaller. Tom Ford’s lipstick formula is supposed to be hydrating, pigmented, and have a more luminous finish (there is also a specifically Matte formula available that is much flatter in finish). This year’s launch of Lips & Boys features 25 new shades that are part of the new “metallic” finish, and then the return of 25 shades from last year. In general, the formula is semi-opaque to opaque with a lightly creamy consistency that doesn’t slide around a lot but doesn’t cling to the lips. I get anywhere from three to six hours of wear out of them, and most shades are lightly hydrating over time. The formula is vanilla-scented with no discernible taste.
