Tarte Light of the Party Makeup Palette
Tarte Light of the Party Makeup Palette ($59.00 for 1.41 oz.) includes thirty eyeshadows, three cheek products, and a travel-sized mascara housed in a medium-large-sized zippered case with sequins on the exterior lid. There is a smaller palette that pops out that contains the three cheek products and six eyeshadows, which is simple cardboard packaging and when removed, reveals the mirror inside. The case is relatively heavy, so the mirror never stays open at an angle, which limits some of its functionality (without propping it up against a wall or the like).
For those keeping track of value…
It’s harder to assess value with a brand like Tarte, as the majority of their eyeshadow releases are in palettes. That being said, I looked at three ways to calculate total value of the eyeshadows: 1) their current and permanent Tartelette palette, which brings the price per ounce to $69.18, 2) the price per ounce of their eyeshadow refills, which brings price per ounce to $83.33, and 3) the price per ounce of their Amazonian Clay Eyeshadow Quads, which brings price per ounce to $110.00. As far as I can tell, they don’t sell their highlighters as standalone products, so I went with the price per ounce of their blush formula. Tarte sets are large and almost always around the $50-ish range, and they are a good value, but I’m not sure what price per ounce they’re using to get to $394 value. As a consumer, given that Tarte mostly releases in palettes, the “value” is softer since you’re almost always getting more for your money than if you bought singles (which aren’t really available from Tarte). There is certainly some value associated with the dual-ended, travel-sized brush and the case itself, but the two aren’t $200+ in value either.

Social Butterfly is a medium, warm-toned brown with yellow undertones and a mostly matte finish. The texture was soft, blendable, and easily applied to the skin. Pink Champagne is a brighter, pink-tinged beige with a frosted finish. It has subtle,w armer undertones, but it looked almost icy against my undertones so it may be more or less warm-toned depending on what your own undertones are like. The texture was soft and smooth, so it blended out well, but it was also a bit powdery. It stopped just short of emphasizing pores on my skin. This shade lasted for eight hours. I highly suggest that you check this palette out if you’re interested in it. I’m wearing Sugar Cookie, What a Wonderful Pearl, Rum Plum Plum, and Mulled Wine on my lids, and the bronzer, blush, and highlight on my cheeks and I’m pleasantly surprised. Most of the shadows didn’t swatch well, but they were fairly pigmented upon application. Are the shadows easily duped? Yes. Are there a lot of neutrals in this palette? Obviously. I think the Tartelette palette is better quality compared to this palette, and this is only the first day I’ve used this palette so I haven’t tested out a majority of the shades, but as of right now, I’m glad I purchased this palette.

Ugh, IMO this has got to be one of the bulkiest and ugliest holiday sets in recent memory. Every time I see that sequin cover, I just cringe. They could’ve easily eliminated all of the D and F shades to slim down this palette. What were they thinking?? I’m convinced Tarte has 10 million of these shades in a warehouse, they just slap cute new names on them, shove them out the door as a “new” palette, and hope they sell. When so many other brands are issuing new colors and new formulas, it seems like Tarte is just frozen in time. The only thing I like is the smaller pop out palette –the colors and slimmer size are perfect for touch-ups at work or business travel.
It’s massive!! I mean, Tarte does a lot of big kits, but they are often more functional – like bags and removable palettes.
I totally agree with Katherine about Tarte reusing the same shades with different cute names. Besides the quality, I also don’t like that there are so many warm brown shades. I don’t look good in warm browns, wish there were at least more cool shades to balance out the palette.
I’m obsessed with “Come What Grey”! I’m totally sad that there were no close enough dupes! And the closest one is LE! UGH!! i know i shouldn’t buy for just 1 e/s… BUT… :-/

Okay, I figured out what it was I thinking of, but I’m not sure it’ll help: it looks really close to the MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Camel Coat.
Geez it wasn’t letting me log in on my iPhone…but anyway, I wanted to say that I own Makeup Geek High Tea. It’s not a perfect dupe, I’d say it’s a tad darker (and maybe slightly more shimmery) but it is pretty similar. You could get the Vice 4 palette, but that dupe looks horrible….
I’d check out singles by Nars, Anastasia, Makeup Geek, MAC, etc
I have two shadows that are not listed as dupes on here, they don’t even look similar on here…but they search EXACTLY the same…that usually hasn’t been the case. This site is extremely accurate, but just see what you can find. Don’t buy this palette for that one shade. It’s so not worth it in this case. Sorry to tell you what to do ?
I don’t know why but too faced holiday gift sets are always a miss for me. The only palette for eyeshadows that I love is their chocolate bars everything else is just tons of fall out and blotchy. ;/ I always love your reviews they are so helpful and I always know you’re 100% honest. anyway, with that said, we are similar in skin tones and was wondering what is your favorite bronzer for ALL time? I’m having a hard time finding my perfect bronzer 🙁

I had a $50 gift card just itching to be spent so I bought this. I actually like it so far! I love neutral eye shadows though :/ they perform decently on the eyes with a primer.

To go to such detailed examination of each colour is fantastic. The dupe list for each colour shows how universal Tarte’s colours are and yet the brand keeps putting out the same colours year in and year out. Added to that – they are not even of good quality. This thoroughly HORRID palette wins one prize: Ugliest palette of the year award!!! Just really, REALLY poorly thought out ( did anyone actually think this monstrosity out? I doubt it! ), atrocious QC issues and bulky as all heck! Christine, I feel bad for you having to test each of these and then write out such a huge and detailed review for such a disastrous fail of a palette. You definitely spare us many costly and disappointing mistakes, so a big thank you is in order here!

Ew I really don’t like that sequin cover. I wish Tarte would release fewer palettes and sets for the holidays but focus on quality more. Honestly I’m not even looking into their sets anymore: too large, too bulky, too many things I don’t need, too many neutrals, and the quality is not consistent enough.

It’s a shame the small palette isn’t available separately, the quality of those few products looks alright and it would be just the perfect size and combination of colours and finishes for a basic no-brainer neutral palette or for someone just starting in make-up.
Personally, I can’t really handle large palettes, they overwhelm me 🙂

Hi! I’m from Argentina and palettes are hella expensive here! This palette is sold 4 times more expensive than it costs at sephora or wherever they sell them. I want to buy my first palette and I think it should be a neutral palette. Do you recommend this palette? do you recommend another one? I like Morphe palettes too, but I’m not sure about which one I should buy.

Thanks for reviewing, this one is an easy pass for me. I am not a fan of the Tarte eyeshadow formula (much too thin for me generally). Seems like Tarte is the only brand that can’t nail a shimmery taupe, chocolate brown, or champagne???

Sometimes this not available doesn’t matter so much. This had by far too many F’s in it to make it even something to think twice about. For me, that is.

I usually adore Tarte as my everyday shadows since they are more subdued. That being said, some of these look downright transparent. That’s never a look I’m going for. It does look like they listened to their audience from last year, as there were complaints of the palettes having too many dark shades . I agreed. This one is “light” as the name says, but I’m so disappointed. I want them to show up. I also liked seeing “a” peach but that one barely shows up as well. I agree the palette is not something that attracts me. it’s too big and doesn’t come out ..I saw that on vlogs. i like something I can pull out & hold. I did see the ulta version and got that in spite of being sick of pinks/ purples. The tartlette was such a great palettte. I hope tarte creates a new palette with some “warm” tones..apricots, peaches (that show up) etc..also lighter shades that work well. I bet it would sell out. (psst tarte, please…1 awesome palette with warm shades!!)
Anyway thank you for your in depth review, I had heard similar sentiments expressed in reviews as well. (very chalky shadows that were not showing up) – This tarte junkie will be fine with the ulta one (i love design, so convenient) and the blush palette but skipping this guy.
