Best Rose Gold Highlighters 2018

Best in Beauty
Rose Gold Highlighters

I have a weakness for rose gold, whether it’s jewelry, shoes, or my highlighters. For me, these types of hues double as a blush and highlighter but are very “everyday” wearable for me. Whenever a new one releases, I find myself reaching for it over and over again whenever I need a lil’ oomph for photos but don’t want it to dominate in every photo.

My list of best rose gold highlighters features 10 permanent favorites! Two limited edition shades that I’ll wear over and over again are Dose of Colors Bathe (this just released and I couldn’t resist slipping it into my go-to drawer–it’s that good! the shine! the blendability!) and Estee Lauder’s Modern Mercury (which is almost identical to MAC Superb, listed below). Honestly, I’m spoiled–there are so many fantastic variations available at all different price points and, to a degree, how reflective the finish one prefers.

Flesh Beauty’s Promise is going to be perfect for someone who wants less of a metallic/high-shine finish, whereas OFRA’s Blissful yields the most metallic finish. For deeper skin tones, Coloured Raine Bourgeois and Fenty’s Ginger Beinge/Moscow Mule both give a beautiful, red-copper glow to the skin with the depth and intensity that richer skin tones need to get a similar highlighting blush effect (but many of the lighter options could work as a highlighter).

I keep these shades in my vanity as go-tos (when you’re in love with a shade, you really learn to identify every nuance between them to justify having six near-dupes in one drawer…): ColourPop Might Be, Makeup Geek Rekindle, MAC Superb, and Laura Geller Ballerina.

Lipsticks Under $15

Happy National Lipstick Day 2018! Here is an updated list of the best lipsticks I’ve tried and tested that are currently available for under $15. It’s no surprise to find that the top 50 is dominated by brands like ColourPop, Maybelline, and Sephora, which are brands that know how to do lipstick! For really long-wearing color that’s pigmented but not nearly as drying as typical liquid lipstick, I reach for ColourPop’s Ultra Satin formula. For comfy mattes, Maybelline Matte ranges are fantastic. For a mix of finishes, colors, and depths, Sephora’s #LipStories range has you covered. L’Oreal’s Colour Riche Shine Lipsticks are perfect for anyone who wants shinier, glossier finishes without sacrificing pigment.

Fenty Beauty Moroccan Spice Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.47 oz.) is a new, 16-pan palette that features an array of shimmers and mattes with pops of color and warmer neutrals. In practice, I found it harder to work with despite, at a glance, seeing several different color combinations. I struggled due to the shimmers looking less shiny/shimmery after a few minutes, so shades seemed to muddy and look faded with less contrast than I expected. I think this palette will work best for someone who uses two to four shades in a look, doesn’t mind bringing in a few outside shades, and uses primer.

About This Series

Each look idea is centered around a “quad” of four shades with the expectation that one might bring in the appropriate brow bone or additional transitional shade based on skin tone. I know that I tend to use more like five or six shades in a typical look, but I think that four is a happy medium to give a good idea of the “core” color scheme of a look while giving you the ability to lighten/darken as desired. I have listed the colors in this order: inner lid, middle of lid, outer lid/crease, and crease/above crease.

You might see combinations that seem slightly repeated but placement will vary (e.g. a halo placement where the lightest and more shimmery shade is placed on the center) as placement can also create a different effect/look! You might also want to consider incorporating your favorite matte/shimmer shades (as applicable) to increase the versatility of certain palettes. Consider these ideas a jumping off point!

Glossy Fawn

L’Oreal Glossy Fawn Colour Riche Shine Lipstick ($9.99 for 0.10 oz.) is a light-medium brown with warm, rosy undertones and a luminous sheen. The texture was balm-like with moderate slip but didn’t slide around too much on my lips. The color applied evenly with good color coverage, though not quite opaque and this shade was a bit more slippery so it did not build up well. There was a smidgen of color that gathered in my lip lines but wasn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. It lasted well for three hours on me and was hydrating on me.

Formula Overview

$9.99/0.10 oz. - $99.90 Per Ounce

The formula is described as "an ultra-rich, ultra-radiant lipstick with a glossy finish and comfortable wear." Per the brand, "in just one stroke," you'll get "rich color pay-off" with a "hydrating and lasting shine." The pigmentation varied from shade to shade but was generally medium to semi-opaque, often buildable to semi-opaque to opaque coverage. The texture was moderately emollient with noticeable slip, balminess, and felt lightweight on the lips.

Most of the shades did not emphasize the texture of my lips and didn't settle much into my lip lines (glossier, more slippery formulas often do!). The shades lasted between three and five hours with deeper/richer hues lasting longer and leaving very faint stains behind. I found the formula to be lightly hydrating over time and comfortable to wear. They had a sweet, fruity scent but no discernible taste.

Best & Worst of NARS Full Vinyl Lip Lacquers

01/01

NARS Full Vinyl Lip Lacquer

NARS Full Vinyl Lip Lacquer

NARS Full Vinyl Lip Lacquer

NARS Full Vinyl Lip Lacquer ($26.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is supposed to have “patent shine” and “high-octane color,” which is further translated into “mirror-like shine” and “intense color” and has a “moisturizing feel.” The applicator is made with two distinct sides; one side “features a reservoir to deposit the ideal amount of color” (it’s slightly indented) and the other side “evenly distributes the formula.” I actually felt that the applicator often over-applied the product, and I’d expect someone with thinner lips may find they need to wipe some off prior to applying to their lips.

The texture was plush, moderate in thickness but lighter weight (not heavy but I knew I was wearing gloss) and had light to moderate tackiness, which became more noticeable over time. I felt that the shimmery shades applied the best–more even, better coverage, and sat well on my lips–while the cream shades were inconsistent though often quite pigmented. The lighter cream shades (like Santo Domingo) almost appeared bubbled on my lips, not streaky or uneven per se, but the finish wasn’t as flattering or as smooth as it was for deeper, richer hues (like Red District). Both finishes were very shiny–dare I say, mirror-like!–and glossy.

Most shades were pigmented, and the majority lasted at least four hours with some lasting as long as six hours on me. The formula was comfortable to wear and lightly to moderately hydrating over time. They were scented with something sweet and syrupy, not typical vanilla, but didn’t seem to have a discernible taste to me.
