Kat Von D Saint + Sinner Eyeshadow Palette ($62.00 for 0.96 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette for the holidays that features 24 eyeshadows designed to mimic a stained glass window.

First Impressions

Overall, the palette seemed consistent with past Kat Von D eyeshadow palettes (but not the Metal Crush formula, generally) with the mattes having a soft, lightly powdery texture with medium to opaque coverage. There were some matte shades that seemed prone to sheering out (like Scared Heart and Exodus) but haven’t had a chance to apply the majority of the shades in the palette so hard to know for sure but swatching showed such things (my arm is drier than my lid). The shimmers were pigmented with soft to moderately dense textures with a couple being creamier but stiffer, like Vestment, and I felt like these often appeared less shimmery/metallic on (again, like Vestment).

Viseart Golden Hour Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.49 oz.) is a new palette that features nine shades in updated packaging with most of the exterior being rubberized and the cover being metallic.

First Impressions

The mattes were soft, blendable, and semi-opaque to opaque in a single layer with slight dustiness in the pan but nothing that seemed particularly concerning. They felt slightly firmer compared to some of Viseart’s other mattes but not significantly different. The shimmers were moderately dense and fairly pigmented, and they applied evenly to bare skin. There was nothing through swatching or applying (I’m writing this as I wear them, so I have nothing to report yet on wear) that was inconsistent with Viseart’s typical, high quality formula.

LORAC Mega Pro 4 Palette ($59.00 for 0.45 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette for the holiay season, though the color scheme is certainly not typical for the holidays! To my eye, it gave a more springtime vibe to me due to the more muted quality of a lot of the colors.

First Impressions

While I have always appreciated the blendability of LORAC’s Pro formula, I have often struggled to wear it well on bare skin due to how powdery/soft they are, as the colors often sheer out or go on unevenly (as they seem more prone to absorbing the natural oils on my skin). This palette had some shades that were dusty and thin, and those sheered out very easily and were hard to keep intense/opaque. There were others that were quite pigmented and seemed to go on well (or that they would). The more powdery formula often wears shorter on me than the average powder eyeshadow, and the eyeshadows in the palette felt similar to past releases so nothing says that the wear would be improved but we’ll see.

LORAC seems to like to reuse names, as there were several shades in the palette with the same names as past releases but the colors were completely different (not just in a way that might occur from a different batch). I have no idea why a warm beige is called “Cool Taupe” at all given the shade existed previously (and was more taupe-like!).

Stila Eye for Elegance Liquid Eye Shadow Set ($45.00 for 0.42 oz.) includes six shades of liquid eyeshadow with three shades being part of the Shimmer & Glow finish and three from the Glitter & Glow finish.

First Impressions

Only one of the shades is a shade I’m familiar with–Smoldering Satin–so I don’t have too much food for thought at the moment. Peachy Sheen ran sheer and would definitely be better for adding glitter on top of something else rather than attempting to build it up (which does not always go well in this formula due to the amount of glitter). The three Shimmer & Glow shades seemed fairly pigmented and smooth, and they have more of a pearly-to-metallic finish so I am curious how well they’ll sit on the lid but haven’t had the chance to try them yet.

Marc Jacobs The Wild One Eye-Conic Eyeshadow Palette ($99.00 for 0.56 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette that features 20 eyeshadows in a variety of finishes and colors.

First Impressions

The eyeshadows seemed consistent with the more recently released Eye-Conic Palettes–soft, blendable, pigmented–but my experienced showed that wear may tell a different story. Hen Party was unlike any finish I have seen from the brand; it was like loosely packed glitter, and it did not seem to have much in the way of binders or adhesive qualities, so I don’t have much hope for that one. There were a few of the less shimmery shades that had weaker pigmentation but seemed like they might be buildable in practice. Most of the shimmery shades were pigmented with a smooth, almost cream-like feel to them but did not feel so dense that it would be difficult to blend out or use with a brush.

Too Faced Boss Lady Beauty Agenda Palette ($58.00 for 1.23 oz.) is a limited edition, mega palette exclusively available at Sephora for the holidays. It contains 24 eyeshadows along with three cheek colors. Too Faced managed to create a holiday set that not only highlights the brand’s typical aesthetic but does so in a truly functional way with the inclusion of a zippered, soft binder and planner. Instead of cute-but-bulky pop-up scenes that end up in the recycling bin, the planner is usable and easily passed along as a gift as well.

First Impressions

As I have found over the last few palette releases from the brand, the formula is not quite their typical one. The press seems firmer while many shades seemed to have denser, better mixed textures where the powders actually bind together and go on a whole lot better on the lid (primer or not). The majority of the shimmery shades were significantly less dusty and dry compared to most of the brand’s body of work over the last few years. The mattes were velvety and finely-milled with some powderiness in the pan but seemed more pigmented, though there were a few misses in the palette judging from swatches alone. We’ll have to see how they wear and apply in practice but so far, the palette seems so much more promising and a lot less dreadful to test compared to past years’ palettes.
