Marc Jacobs Beauty About Last Night (240) Style Eye-Con No. 20 Palette
Marc Jacobs Beauty About Last Night (240) Style Eye-Con No. 20 Palette ($99.00 for 0.60 oz.) is a very large, product-packed palette housed in a bronze-hued plastic compact. Overall, the majority of the eyeshadows were soft, blendable, pigmented, and long-wearing. For a palette with this many shades (and several of them matte!), its performance was impressive. I’m not, personally, sold on the color combination and didn’t feel like it was as versatile as last year’s The Free Spirit palette. If you’re unfamiliar with the way this palette is arranged, look at the shades as columns, as each column creates a “look.”
The mega-sized palette is actually quite a good deal for Marc Jacobs’ eyeshadows, though it is obviously a large amount to put toward one product, so I think it is important to consider how many shades you’d use and whether you’re someone who really uses larger palettes on a regular basis. As a note, going by the label’s printed oz. per shade weight, it appears as if it contains more than last year’s palette, but if you compare the weight by grams, it’s the same (16g in both) — my guess is the oz. was rounded up. There are also some shades that are very close to shades found in last year’s palette.
About Last Night No. 01 is a very light beige with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation, though it was not fully opaque, that had a soft, silky texture that wasn’t too powdery or too firm. It is very light, so it may appear chalkier on some skin tones. This shade wore well for eight hours on me. IT Cosmetics Peaceful (P, ) is warmer (95% similar). LORAC Blanc (PiP, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). About Last Night No. 02 is an intense, medium-dark gold with strong, warm yellow undertones and a metallic shimmer. It is a “cooler” gold as it has yellower tones, rather than more orange tones. The color payoff was fantastic with a really smooth, cream-like texture that was easy to work with and lasted for eight and a half hours. On a personal note, I felt like the tone made it harder to work with the rest of the palette. KVD Beauty Relic (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Sephora Bronze (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Sydney Grace Be the Sunshine (PiP, $6.25) is lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Twisted (LE, ) is more muted (95% similar). KVD Beauty Thrasher (DC, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). About Last Night No. 03 is a medium-dark bronze with warm, reddish undertones and a frosted sheen. The texture was slightly dry, which resulted in some of the shimmer separating from the base, but it was blendable and applied well to the lid with patting motions (and then blending the edges). The color lasted for eight hours before fading. ColourPop Uninhibited (PiP, $4.50) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Peanut Butter Cup (LE, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). About Last Night No. 04 is a deep, muted purple with neutral-to-cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had opaque color coverage that went on well, didn’t sheer out instantly, and lasted for almost nine hours. The downside was that it wasn’t as blendable as it could have been, so it does take some extra effort to diffuse the edges. About Face Infinity (P, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). Tarte Evening Affair (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). Makeup Geek Taboo (DC, $6.00) is darker, more muted (95% similar). bareMinerals Center Stage (PiP, ) is warmer (95% similar). About Last Night No. 06 is a medium, rosy copper with warm undertones and a frosted finish. The eyeshadow had a drier, chunkier texture–you could feel the sparkle in it–which made it easier to blend on the skin, but it was prone to sheering out. If I used this one again, I would use a dampened brush to help get better payoff and impact while minimizing fall out. The color wore well for eight hours with a bit of fall out over time. Charlotte Tilbury Rose Gold (P, $34.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). ColourPop Polly (LE, $6.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). About Last Night No. 07 is a deep, reddish brown with faint gold sparkle over a matte finish. It had intense pigmentation that applied evenly to the skin, and it was fairly blendable overall. It could have been easier to diffuse the edges, and the thinner, more matte finish didn’t work as well with some of the denser shimmers (like No. 06)–it was better pulling and sweeping the shimmer over the matte instead of the other way around. I was impressed by the nine-hour wear of this shade. Pat McGrath Xtreme Mahogany (PiP, $25.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). NABLA Cosmetics Mea Culpa (PiP, $8.00) is less shimmery, warmer (95% similar). Huda Beauty Warm Browns #4 (PiP, ) is darker, cooler (95% similar). About Last Night No. 08 is a sooty, grayish black with cool undertones and very faint blue shimmer. The shimmer isn’t noticeable on the lid, though you can see it in the pan and in the swatch close-up. The texture was firmer and harder to apply, as it would go on unevenly and was harder to blend out. I recommend using a fluffier brush and layering it over another eyeshadow to darken, rather than used on its own, to minimize the visible unevenness. The color wore well for eight and a half hours on me. Laura Mercier Chocolate Espresso (LE, $23.00) is warmer (95% similar). NARS Coconut Grove (DC, $25.00) is warmer (90% similar). About Last Night No. 09 is a light beige with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish. It is a few shades darker than No. 01, but it is still on the lighter side and could sometimes look a bit chalky against my skin tone, so it may not work as well on deeper skin tones as it would on fairer complexions. The texture felt soft and silky, blendable, just a smidgen powdery, and was good for lightening other shades as it played well with the other textures in the palette. On me, it lasted for eight hours. Hourglass Infinity #1 (PiP, )(100% similar). Tarte Vanilla Candles (LE, )(100% similar). LORAC Nude #1 (LE, $19.00)(100% similar). About Last Night No. 10 is a light, bluish white with cool undertones and an iridescent sheen. It had decent pigmentation, but it was less pigmented than most shades in the palette. It seemed more like a layering shade, and it would work well to highlight the inner tear duct or to brighten the lower lash line. The texture was smooth, blendable, and easy to work with. This shade started to fade after eight hours of wear. Sugarpill Ice Angel (PiP, $13.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Dior Precious Embroidery #2 (LE, ) is more shimmery, warmer (95% similar). About Last Night No. 11 is a deep, smoky purple with cool undertones and a frosted sheen. The color payoff was rich and intense on bare skin, and the texture was smooth, blendable, and didn’t kick up excess product in the pan or result in fall out during application. This shade lasted for nine hours on me before creasing faintly. BH Cosmetics Foil Eyes 2 #25 (PiP, ) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Ciate Own It (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). About Last Night No. 12 is a deep black with a matte finish. The pigmentation was mostly opaque, though the texture was a smidgen thin and drier, so it was harder to apply on bare skin. It is a shade that applies and works better over other shades to darken them than all-over on its own (I would use an eyeshadow primer underneath it for that type of application). About Last Night No. 15 is a muted, medium taupe-gray with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had decent pigmentation, though it was not fully opaque, that I had no difficulty blending and diffusing on bare skin. This shade started to fade after eight hours of wear. About Last Night No. 16 is a deep, bluish black with cool undertones and green and teal shimmer over a matte finish. If patted onto the lid, some of the shimmer is visible, but it looks mostly matte on the lid. As a result, I think this is redundant given that No. 12 is already a deep black with a matte finish. The payoff of this shade was better, and it was easier to blend out on the skin. It wore well for eight and a half hours. Chanel Tisse Smoky #4 (PiP, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Smashbox Big Night (PiP, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). ColourPop Raven (LE, $6.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Too Faced Tres Chic (LE, $16.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). About Last Night No. 17 is a soft, rosy pink with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation paired with a soft, lightly drier texture where some of the shimmer pulled away from the base, which resulted in sheerer coverage when applied than merely swatched. This shade wore strongly for eight hours on me. Bad Habit Sirius (PiP, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). Chanel City Lights #2 (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). bareMinerals Merry (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). LORAC Soft Pearl (PiP, $19.00) is cooler (95% similar). About Last Night No. 18 is a muted, light-medium rosy mauve with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had medium coverage, so it was one of the weaker shades in the palette, and the texture was much firmer and harder to work with compared to other mattes. It started to fade after seven and a half hours on me. Lancome My French #3 (LE, ) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Happy Song (LE, $17.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). About Last Night No. 19 is a medium-dark, smoky plum with soft, warm undertones and a frosted finish. The texture had slight dryness to it, but it did not seem to be a major issue when I applied it to the lid, as the color stayed true-to-pan and wasn’t messy to work with. The color payoff was mostly opaque. This shade lasted for eight hours on me. Marc Jacobs Beauty Twilight (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). NARS Phoebe (P, $29.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Dress (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Giorgio Armani #27 (DC, $33.00)(95% similar). MAC Circa Plum (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). About Last Night No. 20 is a muted, medium-dark red-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. The texture was fairly soft, smooth, and blendable despite having a firmer texture than most of the mattes did in this palette. First of all let me mention how awesome your eye looks came out using this palette! Stunning! ?
But as for the palette. Too dupable. In fact, I have at least one dupe for just about every single shade. Then there’s the fact that some of the shades within even dupe eachother! I now deeply regret not buying last year’s, because this one is an easy pass for me.
I’m sure we are just at the beginning of a deluge of holiday palettes, so some skips are a good thing 😀
I am so relived this palette did not get an A+. I bought last year’s Free Spirit palette and knew I would not purchase this palette, not because I am dissatisfied with last year’s palette, but rather I just have purchased so many palettes and cannot justify the purchase of a palette of this size unless the colors were unique from others that I already own. That being said, if you had given it your highest endorsement, I would have struggled to stay strong and resist?
I think last year’s was also an A-, actually, so they ended up about the same. I don’t think last year’s had as big of a dud shade as this one though.
Very pretty, but there shouldn’t be any dud shades for this amount of money. I liked last year’s shade selection better.
I can understand that, Rachel! 🙂
I agree with that, but if I wasn’t working for nothing ($ wise) at the moment I would have picked this up. The shades are calling me!!!!
I skipped last year’s palette because it had too many light shades that were going to look the same on my lids, and not enough midtone shades for transition. I was really looking forward to this year’s palette, but super disappointed in the color combo, it looks so boring. Like about 90% neutrals, which I have multiple dupes for, wish they had added in some interesting pops of color, especially for a “holiday” palette. I can’t justify $100 for this, but glad it scored well for those who are interested.
It is definitely easier to dupe with so many neutrals, given how many neutral palettes exist now!
A purple that gets an A (-)???? How long since we’ve seen THAT? I was so hoping this would be crap…really I was. I’ve also come to the realization that I don’t really like large eyeshadow palettes because I have a small area in my bathroom to apply makeup and they’re just too awkward for that little counter area. I’d so much happier with quads the size of Chanel, Bare Minerals and the MAC MES quads. If I had more space, it would be a different story but even if there was room in my bedroom for a vanity, the light in there is not as good at all.
Hahaha! The same thought ran through my head when I was rating it.
I wish this got a B+ or under! Then I would completely take it off my list. But now I must consider…. 🙁
Awww!
So glad that this palette earned an A- but I will still hold off for a bit to see what Holiday palettes will be coming forth before I decide to splurge. Can’t wait to see what the other companies will be offering!
I’m sure there will be ton of palettes to come!
The eye looks you created are fabulous, but I have to agree with the others- this pallete is very dupable, so I will probably skip.
Thank you!
Alas, I’m interested in about 1/2 of these shades, and of those I think I have dupes for most or all. And it is quite costly. So I must pass.
Sounds like a good plan! I don’t think 1/2 is enough for such a large palette!
very beautiful eye look! I can’t even remember the one from last year which I think have better color selection. Too many pallette around holiday season!
Thank you, Gina!
I purchased and gifted the Free Spirit palette of last year, and it sold out before I could get one for myself. I have already snagged this one and have been using it for a few days— love it! I am really starting to love the MJB lin. I hope there are more surprises in store from the brand for the holidays!
What are some of your favorite combos, Pamyla?
I remember last year when it was actually winter you and I talking about how much we were loving/using our free spirit palettes. It was hard to pay that much but ended up being a great investment. I already had in mind if Marc Jacobs did another 20 pan this year that would be my big purchase, but dang. It reviewed so good too. I want to love it but it’s doing nothing for me. I’m trying to be excited but nope. I don’t know wth is wrong!
Scratch that entirely!!! I just saw your eye looks. So vibrant and beautiful! I know that’s user skill and you are totally my eyeshadow hero! So so gorgeous…like a sunrise and the other a sunset. The shadows look much different on the eye than in pan or swatched. NOW I’m kinda excited lol
I feel like if it doesn’t grab you, it’s probably not worth the $99!
Good point. I went a little crazy on that Ulta 10x points deal today so I’m grateful for your voice of reason. Did you get anything?
I did! Estee Lauder Hi-Lustres and IT brushes!
I’m so torn! I didn’t get last years even though I liked it for the most part and knew I’d use 80% of a the shades. This also has a few “dud”ier shades but I have few to none of the “dupes”. Who knows!
Do you like most of the shades in this palette?
The number 10 shadow is so gorgeous! I’ve never tried any Marc Jacobs shadows before.
It is!
Christine, what IS your favorite neutral pallette, if you had to pick? (asking b/c I still do not have one. LOL)
Viseart Paris Nudes, I guess 🙂
So glad you said that Christine! I ordered it today 🙂 along with Editorial Mattes And I even sprung for Bijoux Royal. Love Viseart palettes.
I think there may have been an error–on 13, it’s described as applied evenly and blended easily, but there are 0 in application. Maybe a value should have been entered there?
Sorry, total stupidity on my part! It is fixed now.
I’ve never had a MJB palette before, so this will be my first. I love all the colors & even the Compaq! I waited for your review! Whew!!!
Enjoy it, Jasmine!
Beautiful eye looks Christine.
I normally love MJ’s palettes, but this one is disappointing for me. Not one colour to love. Very dupable and many shades so similar to each other (especially the pinky ones) that it is a waste of a spot on the palette. A really limited variety of colours too.
Thank you, Genevieve!
Hi Genevieve 🙂 I always enjoy reading your comments and appreciate your take on things. While browsing Barney’s online beauty dept today I saw a Cle De Peau eyeshadow quad #315 that made me think of you. I don’t know if the greens are shades you’d enjoy or if you’ve already seen it but I made a note of the # so I could pass it along. I don’t think I have anything from the brand it’s so pricey but they sure make beautiful things!
Thank you Bonnie – I will check out that Cle De Peau eyeshadow quad. I haven’t seen it yet. Their shadows are always so beautiful.
I have just had a look at the quad and oh my – such beautiful shades of green. I love it. Thank you so much for thinking of me. I am going to see if I can see it/swatch it here. Hopefully Sephora has it.
Wow Christine, the looks you did with this palette are beautiful! ?
Thank you, Primpcess!
This palette is so beautiful…and I almost caved, but then I had an epiphany of sorts lol! I got out all of the Style Eye-con No. 7 palettes I own (I have 6 total) and was able to dupe or nearly dupe all but 3 shades so I passed on this one. That being said, it IS a tremendous value if one would use all of the shades or wants to travel without hauling a ton of palettes along (the travel aspect would be my driving force if I did decide to buy it!).
There are a few other palettes getting ready to launch that I’d like to explore…the Hourglass Surreal Light Palette, the gorgeous quint of smoky neutrals coming with the Libre Synthetic de Chanel Collection, the cool and warm face/eye palettes from Tom Ford Holiday…ohhhh the list goes on LOL!! I’m also super excited for Kevyn Aucoin’s upcoming foundation…I can hear my wallet crying!
Thank you a million for ALL the work you do, Christine! It is all so greatly appreciated!!
There are quite a few colors I love but I already have similar ones. Again, the looks you’ve created are stunning as always. So creative. I would love to see an abstract painting done by you in an orgy of color. Seriously.
Gosh this looks great! And your eeeeeeeeeyes… <3
I’m so in love with the packaging of MJB palettes! I buy things from his line and then have a horrible time trying to use them bc I just want to stare at them in their gorgeous newness glory forever! This scored better than I expected! I think it’s good enough to merit the purchase (even though I have dupes. Even though I may never actually use it! Lol!) just bc I want it in my collection! I LOOOOVE that plummy eye look you did so much!!!!
Your eye looks are stunning! They are not helping me (us?) to resist this palette ;).
Surprisingly I do not have any dupe mentionned in your review… Ok MUFE S-102 is objectively close enough to one of the blacks! Haha Do you think that the “dud” shades could still perform decently (meaning without it becoming a hassle) over primer/cream shadows?
I’m a bit torn. Overall the quality is good and fit my colors… I would use it on a weekly basis if not daily. But, with all the holidays beauties… I’m very curious about this hourglass release and to see what MUFE will come up with! Luckily I will have quite some time to think about it as sephora eu is always slow to sell the collections (might even get it with a discount code? *hopes*).
This is nowhere nearly as neutral as I thought it would be, but until I saw your magnificent looks, I didn’t see it as colorful, either. Also don’t see it as idiot proof, despite the layout. Like about one half of the shades, but the other half leans more towards the deselected side. It is fairly dupable, and for some reason, ? the rounded aspect, I find the housing very unwieldy. I almost want to depot last year’s, but am too fearful. 2015 gets a fair amount of love, even bought one for a BFF. The 2015 bunch of lighter base shades leant itself to how I tend to do (old lady) eye shadow. Pretty glad I’m not feeling this one: want to write off this and, shall we assume a vice 5, in order to hop to bijoux royale. Clearly, this chomps a big chunk of change, and does not fill a lot of holes-in-stash. Sorry Marc, maybe the bright blush.
Hmmm. I’m thinking that I will be investing in viseart instead- this won’t be my first foray into mjb
The fact that this palette includes a matte purple shade that isn’t a patchy mess is almost enough for me to rationalize buying this….that, and the fact that I’ve been wanting to try some MJ eyeshadow for a while now. But for now, I will remind myself of the number of dupes I have for most of the other shades in this palette, because the last thing I need to be spending money on for a good while is eyeshadow. Even quality eyeshadow. ?
Wow your looks here are gorgeous!
I love the mix of colour temps and finishes in this palette. I’m thoroughly tempted, but also know that many of my favourite shades in this palette appear to be quite dupeable within my stash. So torn. I will have to delve a little deeper to compare a number of key shadows and go from there.
I agree with your assessment that the swatched palette overall doesn’t have color combinations that inspire a big variety of makeup looks or that appear to mesh well with each other. Pass for me!
I might skip this, I really like the look of it, and it wasn’t bad according to your review, but I have, and love last years palette, I wanted this one because it has some lighter colours. I guess we’ll just have to see what all the other brands think up for the holidays, and talking of holidays, isn’t it a bit early to talk about them? Or maybe this isn’t a holiday LE at all, just me thinking it is, or did I read it. My brain obviously isn’t working 🙂
The looks you did are awesome!
I bought it and kept it untouched until the review and “looks”because I was sort of dithering, which I never do when it comes to a palette (must be peri menopause!) I’m keeping it now, purely for the nice balance of mattes, great looks you did, and I don’t have a decent large “nude” palette.
Nice dark purple.
I bought this palette and hated it so much I returned it, and I almost never return things. At least three of the shadows that had shimmer separated from the base, as if they had no shimmer whatsoever. The staying power was definitely great though. This one just wasn’t for me.
For anyone wishing they’d gotten last year’s Free Spirit, it is available on marcjacobsbeauty.
