Rant & Rave: Fall Makeup
Tell us what you love and hate about...
Fall Makeup
Sometimes I feel like there is not much variation on fall color schemes, like it may be one of the less inspired seasons – maybe it’s because more brands focus on holiday line-ups? I’m not sure. I love the earthy, more subdued tones of fall, so it is nice to see them.

I personally love the earthy tones of fall. It is my favorite season!
What she said! So that’s what I love about fall makeup.
What I don’t like is that lately some colors seem to be almost totally absent — dark green specifically and greens in general. It’s like greens have become the outcasts of the makeup world.
I totally agree Susan. Greens can be so pretty and suit my eye colour but I feel uncomfortable wearing them as they have been usurped by neutral Browns and plums 🙁
I love fall and look forward to the make-up and clothing lines. I am not a hot weather person so can’t wait for cooler air. I agree with many here and am tired of the lack of inspired fall colors. I would love to see some beautiful green and purple shades.
I love the colors of the fall season. It’s my favorite season and I wish there were more fall inspired makeup collections. I loved Chanel’s fall collection 2015. I think I almost bought the entire collection. There really does not seem to be much this season, though I’m interested in a few pieces from Dior’s fall collection.
Fall is my favourite time of year (do Americans never call it “autumn”?). I love fall clothing….more texture-y fabrics, the richer colours, the ability to layer (it’s just too darned hot in summer to put a jacket over a chunky sweater and top that with a challis scarf!). The same goes for makeup – the richer reds and burgundies that feel so right, the fact that cooler weather makes it more comfortable to wear more makeup and more colour without it looking overdone and without it melting off in an hour! One of my favourite eyeshadow quads is Chanel’s Tisse d’automne from last year; another is the Bonne Etoile one Dior came out with a few years back. Those sorts of colours, along with a warm (but not orange) red lipstick and a blush like MAC Frankly Scarlet, Plumful or Conjure Up (from YEARS ago but mine is still going strong) are the things I love using so much. My “rant” would be that in Southern Ontario, autumn is gone before you even realize it’s arrived…we go from unbearable heat-wave to freezing cold and blizzards in the blink of an eye.
I’m in the States an say Autumn frequently. Also in NE OHIO so I know exactly what you mean about the beautiful crisp weather and colors disappearing so quickly. I wonder if it’s because of the crazy weather on the Great Lakes. It is such eye candy that we must enjoy it while we can.
Mariella – I agree with you! Autumn is my favourite time of year as well. I can’t wait to put on jeans, boots, sweaters and scarves 🙂 I don’t like summer in general, but this year it was especially brutal. So happy to say *buh-bye* to Summer 2016 lol…
I’m in southern Ontario too, and oh my goodness do I agree with you about our weather. We get about a week of Autumn and then snow storms and blizzards come November. Ahaha.
I enjoy there being a change of pace; I’ve enjoyed summery shimmery colors for weeks now, but I’ll be happy to try on other parts of my wardrobe as it were. Also, generally fall colors are good for my warmer skin tone.
Hmmm, I feel like I get very excited for summer makeup because I love the idea of wearing bronzer and neon lipstick, but vampy cold-weather colors definitely suit me better. I live near the beach and it’s just plain weird to be going about in a full face with wine lips when everyone else is still wet from the ocean so I absolutely feel the shift in seasonal makeup.
I looooooove fall makeup…Iam born in October so Autumn its my favorite season…In make up i love burgundy lipstick, dusty rose, plum, dark chocolate eyeshadows, rosewood blushes…For me its the time you can wear a glamourous makeup or a “femme fatal”makeup more than in summer or spring
You can have dark lips or deep eyes 😉
Rave: I love the lip colors that come out: Vampy shades, rich red, burnt orange.
Rant: So many brown eyeshadows. I don’t dislike brown, but it’s nice to still have some color. I think it’s great that red and orange eyeshadows are becoming trendy.
I agree that holiday releases are taking over the fall launches. 🙁
I LOVE doing fall looks, but I often prefer doing bright looks throughout summer (or I just stick with my gothy, dark, smoky looks all year). September and November always gets me wanting to do more earth-toned, warmer, more brown and orange looks and I love how those colors pair with my brown eyes.
There’s absolutely nothing I dislike, let alone hate, about Fall in general, and Fall makeup is even less of a problem for me — the colors are my colors! Saturated light-brights and pastels just don’t do it for me; give me Fall and Winter, and I’ll wear them all year.
The one exception to all this is not the makeup, it’s the weather where I live: I grew up in the Midwest and dedicated myself to Autumn from a very early age — probably as soon as I was aware of seasons. Now I live in the Pacific Northwest, and Fall is very different here. But honestly, it’s so close to my heart that I will never think less of it for the rain.
I love fall colors -the rich browns, golds, bronzes, reds, greens, purples, and orange reds are very flattering on me. I can’t wait to whip out my fall palettes – ABH Modern Renaissance, Laura Geller The Delectables, Chanel Tissee D’Automnes. I feel like spring collections tend to be weak ( a lot of sheer pastels that aren’t done well), and summer is a flood of neutral browns that I have a zillion dupes for, but fall is awesome ! And Chanel and Dior both did great fall collections this year.
Tisse d’automne….sigh….I mentioned it too because I love it so much, it popped into my head as soon as I read this question. Autumn captured in a single eyeshadow quad!
rave: the colors are my favorite, and warm fall colors look the best with my hair and skin tone. I also love the fall perfume and candle releases. I love spicy, smoky, warm scents!
rant: I always feel like I should be saving for the holiday rush instead of buying for myself. And often the holiday sets are a better deal so I never know if I should hold out for those releases or not.
I like the warm, bronzes and, this year, the reds and red tones. Cozy.
I find that the actual autumn type shades are ultra flattering to my somewhat odd coloring! Having light eyes with very dak hair and a medium olive skintone can make some shades look just awkward on me. But the warmer and richer tones of cranberry, rust, teal, gold, plum and darker red do me some justice.
I do, however, sometimes get very confused as to whether a specific collection is “fall” or “holiday”!
Always love the eyeshadow colors! The lip colors not so much though.
I love all the warm comforting shades…there’s nothing that I hate about fall makeup.
Rave – darker eyes and lipstick at last do not feel like too much.
Rant – will have to wait all autumn, winter and spring for bright colors to look in place
….note to self: use that turquoise and corals before summer’s off!
Fall is my favorite season but often times the makeup doesn’t compliment me because it’s too rusty/orange/russet/brown when people do things a little differently I usually grab on to the collection. Holiday stuff tends to be more neutral and classic so it’s hard to choose.
The grounded drama of Fall makeup compared to the brightness or lightness of Summer makeup, easily makes it my favourite season. No negatives.
I think “grounded drama” might be the best description of the appeal of Fall makeup I’ve ever read. You nailed it exactly, well done. 🙂
✌
I LOVE fall makeup because of the dark colors. I will wear more reds and dark berries on my lips with more smokey eyes too.
Fall isn’t my favorite season personally, but I can appreciate that it has a lot going for it. I like the way it generally seems to invite warm tones and varying intensity on the eyes. The goth kid in me still gets excited at the prospect of busting out the berry or orange eyeshadow again. MAC Coppering and Sugarpill Flamepoint are still personal favorites. Taupe is a great choice year round but IMO Fall is an especially good season to wear smoldering taupe eye looks.
I guess I like to use Fall as a more subdued extension of Summer, where I try to convey the concept of lingering warmth while incorporating a little more sophistication, or just slightly heavier makeup. Then I veer abruptly into Winter makeup, which probably ties with Summer as my favorite. Spring is my least favorite for makeup, though probably my favorite for weather.
Rant- The fact that it’s still August and where I live it’s still in the upper 80s it’s too soon to be talking “Fall”. Every year it seems that everything is anticipated earlier and earlier. I really can’t even begin to think fall until October lol
Rave- I love fall makeup all the colors are richer and deeper. I love the rust colors, olive, plums and eggplants. For a brown eyed girl it’s a nice time to play with somega color.
