Marc Jacobs The Free Spirit (224) Style Eye-Con No. 20 Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Marc Jacobs Beauty The Free Spirit (224) Style Eye-Con No. 20 Eyeshadow Palette
Marc Jacobs Beauty The Free Spirit (224) Style Eye-Con No. 20 Eyeshadow Palette ($99.00 for 0.564 oz.) includes twenty eyeshadows with two being repeats (though not sure exactly from what palette) and eighteen being brand new. It’s an interesting mix of shades; it’s not your typical holiday assortment with a lot of golds and neutrals, nor is it full of jewel-tones. It skews a bit lighter, and there could be more mid-tone shades in it, but I liked it overall. I think if you like the Marc Jacobs eyeshadow formula, you’ll probably like this set. Overall, the eyeshadows have good color payoff, soft and blendable textures, and are long-wearing.
For a designer brand like this, the price is really in line with what I’d expect to see for this many shades, and it may actually be more product than you’d see from similarly-priced brands (think Chanel, Dior, etc.). It is a good chunk of change to plunk down at once, so I still think it’s a good idea to really consider what shades you’d use and how often on whether this is the right palette to invest in this season. For those keeping track of value:
- Style Eye-Con No. 20 | $99.00 for 0.564 oz. or $175.53 oz.
- Value: Using the 7-pan palettes, this contains $138.65 worth of eyeshadow; using the trios, this contains $169.20 worth of eyeshadow
- Style Eye-Con No. 07 | $59.00 for 0.24 oz. or $245.83/oz.
- Style Eye-Con No. 03 | $42.00 for 0.14 oz. or $300.00/oz.

The Free Spirit No. 17 is an intense, blackened brown with hints of red in its undertone paired with a dusting of shimmer. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture, and I was surprised to see that some of the shimmers actually translated to the lid (but they are subtle!). The color started to fade after eight hours of wear. Marc Jacobs Beauty As Well (PiP, )(100% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty In the Dark (LE, ) is warmer (95% similar). The Free Spirit No. 18 is a deepened purple-burgundy with warm, brown undertones and soft, violet and purple micro-shimmer over a more satin-like finish. It had great color payoff with a soft, silky texture that wasn’t powdery nor was it too firm. The color blended out nicely and lasted for eight hours. Dior Eclectic #5 (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Tarte Glamorous (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
The Free Spirit No. 19 is a muted, medium black with subtle, iridescent micro-shimmer over a matte finish. It had decent pigmentation, but it was noticeably firmer/stiffer in the pan, though I wouldn’t describe it as firm… but it had less give compared to other shades in the palette. The color wore well for eight hours, but it could have been easier to blend out on the skin. Too Faced Tres Chic (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Looks really interesting… Does it come with a pouch? Because I bought the insta-marc contour palette the other day and got a little bit disappointed to find that it did not include a pouch, which I expect from Marc Jacobs since they include pouches for their blushes and eye palettes – all of which are smaller than the contour palette.
I want to say no, because I don’t remember a pouch and couldn’t find one in my to-put-away bin!
No pouch with mine.
YAY! Thanks for confirming, Nicole!
Anytime! 🙂
Uh oh. This is the type of thing that gets me in trouble. Something that was mostly off my radar because of the price and I didn’t expect it to perform well. Then it gets an A-. Suddenly I’m intrigued! (That said, there seem to be quite a lot of dark shades that I may not use. I may still be able to pass.)
It is heavy on light and then dark – could be more mid-tone, I think!
Wow an A-?? I’m impressed! And the shades look really nice, but I’m sad about the purples (purples are my fave) but it might be worth a purchase! I have their Siren palette – you can still get in on MJB’s website (even though it’s LE from last summer) and its soooo beautiful – the rainbow layout, I die. But I won’t order straight from MJB ever again. WORST customer service ever. EVER. My palette arrived with the clasp broken so it won’t close, and I’ve had to jump through so many hoops and still I have to send it back and then order another one. I was promised return phone calls twice that never happened. Ans no compensation for their mistakes.
Oh no, that’s terrible!
Yeah it’s kinda turned me off to the company, and that’s a shame bc they make gorgeous products. Do you know if this will be available on sephora’s site at all? Thanks Christine!
It is on Sephora’s site now – that is where I bought mine!
Ordered from sephora! I’m excited! 😀
The same thing happened to my Lolita palette and I was very annoyed as I’d bought it on holidays and couldn’t easily exchange it (I don’t have Sephora in my country). I ended up having to ask a friend who was travelling to return it as a favour. But it was such a hassle, and I was so disappointed as the product is freaking expensive!
I’m so pleased that I purchased this palette immediately. Marc Jacobs is my favorite luxury brand and I don’t even wait for reviews. Yes, I like some of the palettes betters than others but nonetheless, I have all of the No. 7 and No. 3 palettes so the No. 20 was a no-brainer purchase for me.
Have you had a chance to use this one yet, Christina?
I quite like this! I’m not going to buy it because of the cost and the fact that I’m sure I have some dupes, but I really like all the shades in it. I think there’s a nice range of different shades while maintaining coherency as a palette.
It is! The composition ended up being different than a lot of palettes!
I think that’s why it grabbed me! A lot of holiday palettes have become really cliche, and I think it’s nice to see one thinking outside the box, so to speak.
From looking at the swatches, I knew this one was going to score well, but wow, so many A’s! Even the worse scoring is only a C+ and looks fixable with primer or cream base. I also love how the colors are organized by column, so it’s easy to come up with looks. But I think he could’ve easily eliminated 2-3 lighter shades and thrown in some more midtone colors, especially in blue and green. If he did, my wallet would be missing $100.
I definitely agree that they could have skipped a couple of the light shades (or even a couple of the very dark shades) for more mid-tone/medium ones!
If I hadn’t gone crazy this summer building custom palettes from MAC, MUG, and MUFE, I would really want this. It covers all my personal basics (purples, pinks, olive, pewter, taupe, and some golds). Kind of weird that there’s no warm medium brown crease shade though?
They definitely could have swapped one or two mid-tones in, I think!
Beautiful eye look Christine!
I have to say this is an easy pass for me, as I have dupes that are rated 90-95% for almost every color. First world problem I guess, so many cosmetics that I seldom find anything new that I like. 🙁
lol! Well, maybe it can inspire you to pull out some of the dupes 😉
Love this palette! Only thing that will possibly keep me from buying it is seeing that I actually have dupes for about 75% of these shades. Plus they screwed up the purples AGAIN. Crazy for me to get, I know. But still very tempting!
Gotta let you know, you did one gorgeous, kick-butt eye look with this palette!
Aw, thanks a lot Nancy!
This one is going to be hard to resist for me! I love its quirky but not outlandish mix of shades.
I agree! It’s not your typical set of shades, but it’s not like, “How am I going to wear this…” either.
Hi Christine! No, I haven’t had a chance to actually use this palette yet. You would think I’m a beauty blogger with all the palettes I have stacked up. In fact, I got so overwhelmed this morning and I couldn’t make a choice that I fell back on a staple in my stash, LORAC Pro 2 — but that’s probably because I have been stalking LORAC and Ulta waiting for the Mega Pro 2 palette, so it was on my mind. But I am so glad you liked it and gave it a great rating!
You gotta use it soon!! 🙂 C’mon!
This is soooo beautiful!! I’m in love!!!! I was kind of hoping it wouldn’t get a good grade so I wouldn’t be that tempted, because it has a perfect mix of cool and warm tones, mattes and shimmers, and the packaging is really nice as well. But I don’t know if I want to spend a hundred bucks on an eyeshadow palette 🙁 Or well, I do want to, but I can’t justify it when I know there’s dupes. Even though I don’t mind paying for the brand name itself usually $99 is a lot of money…
LOL! I was like, “Wait, this is going to be good? That’s great! But it’s $99…”
Right! If manage to get som extra work hours I might deserve it though 😛 Trying to make up excuses for me to buy it!
I literally just got this off my door step and clicked on your page and voila! I’m so grateful for your sneak peaks and all the other readers comments. I am not fully confident in my judge of swatches yet. But, with these LE things, I worry. So, I came back and read the comments and saw a lot of positive comments. So, I took a chance and ordered it. I know $99 plus tax is a lot to drop at once. But, for me. This is a totally wearable palette. I’m bummed on No.16. Thanks for the heads up. Do you think a base or primer will help or is it a total loss?
Haha! Great timing 🙂
Hope you enjoy yours, Nicole! I do think a primer will help No. 16 quite a bit.
An A-? Okay now I’m REALLY glad I just bought this without giving it much thought. I saw the press release on here and bought it within an hour. I figured I could always return it if it didn’t work out. But now I’m sooooooo excited to get back home (I’m on vacation so my neighbor put it in my garage). I want it, I need it, stupid vacation I don’t want to be on you anymore! Lol.
Enjoy yours!! Hope you can play soon.
This palette seems a mixed of the small ones.
I could see that!
Well this looks better quality than a lot of the other ones for holiday I’ve seen thus far. It’s a little fun with a lot of practical too!
So far, it is one of the better ones!
Wow. Just wow. I was thinking of Spectrum as the palette I would buy this last semester, but I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be this one. Just hope it arrives to me country.
Fingers crossed for you, Daniel! 😀
I got it!!!
YAYYYYY!
Geez, really nice…another $100..UGH
It’s a pricey one!
Ooh! I really like the look you did!
I may want this palette mostly for the large square mirror! I find it such a struggle to do my makeup at other people’s houses (I stay with family and friends often) because I don’t have my stand mirror. But of course, I wouldn’t spend nearly $100 on an eyeshadow palette just for a mirror!
You’d love this mirror then 😉
A wide range of colours – but sadly no real blues or greens. The colours I liked were Numbers 7,8 and 9. The rest I would not use. I still think there are too many pale, similar shades in the palette. It is very much a light then dark palette. Not many mid shades.
Thank you for this in depth review Christine – it must have taken ages to do with all the swatches and dupe listings. Your eye look is beautiful as well.
Always happy to share! Thank you, Genevieve 🙂
This is REALLY nice but – big surprise – I have multiple dupes for all the shades I really like. And it makes more sense to buy single dupes of the few other shades in this for which I don’t have a good dupe, rather than laying out whatever this will cost in Canada (probably $120 or so, assuming it even comes to Sephora here). But if someone really wanted to spoil the daylights out of me and buy this for me, I wouldn’t complain!
I’ll be curious to find out how marked up it is in Canada, because $99 is pushing it, I think, for a single item–even if there is value there.
Hi Christine,
It’s $119 here in Canada which is quite a lot. I have been eyeing this palette; however, for $119 plus 13% tax in my province (Ontario) it’s quite expensive. I am holding out hope that this palette will still be available once Sephora offers the 20% off deal – then I may consider getting it. It is beautiful very beautiful though!
Oh, wow! That is a high price 🙁
They swatche beautify ! And your eye look ?
Thanks, Jisela!
Christine, thanks for always taking pictures of your hand holding the palette, I like being able to really tell how big it is.
This is a beautiful collections of colors. I like a copper or medium copper brown to line under my eyes. They’re hazel and I have fair skin, it works great on me. I also love a khaki green and don’t often see it in a palette. This may go on my wish list to Santa.
This would be lovely with hazel eyes, I think! It’s a versatile palette!
I’m so glad this got a good review from you. Besides loving Marc Jacobs in general, the layout of this palette is so appealing to me – good mix of warm and cool, different finishes, cohesive without producing looks that will be too same-y. I’m saving up, and we’ll see how the rest of holiday product shakes out, but this one is the top of my list!
Woohoo! Hope you’re able to snag one soon, Jennifer!
Impressive! I really like the look and sound of this. And I really like that they threw some more unusual shades in the mix as well.
It is a nice one!
A nice palette for sure. I like how the greys perform, shame about the purples, but I guess you can’t have everything, heh. I’m not as excited about it as I was about UD’s Urban Spectrum but this intrigues me, it’s a maybe purchase for me!
LOL! It’s at least not the worst purple ever.
luv your reviews but i have a little suggestion – could you make photos not of every eyeshadow (separate) but put it in a row – for example swatches of the first row, second, etc.? I think it will be easier to perceive if the photos are more compact, i guess. Just my opinion=)
Hi Elizee!
You can view swatches by rows in the Swatch Gallery! In order to photograph them individually, which is the only way to compare and look for dupes, I only get 3-4 on my arm at a time.
I want this – but since it’s gotten so many good reviews I know it’s going to be hard to get :(!
I think the price tag may keep some people from rushing into it!
Hmm. I’d written this off but with the great review it might go back on the “to be considered” list. Love that the value (as compared to MJ prices in general) is there.
Thankfully there was some value to it!
This is a great value as most of his palettes are $60.00 for 7 shades. If I didn’t have a few of his other pallets I would be all over this. I just find these colors to be very dupable and although he is claiming they’re new shades, they look so much like the shades that are already in his permanent palettes .
Ladies, if you always wanted to try Marc Jacobs shadows you should jump on this. It’s actually a great deal .
Oh, yes, it is a good value for MJB and similar high-end brands in general — not so much if you tend to buy more mid-to-high-end like UD etc. but for MJB, definitely.
I love the variety of shades! I don’t know if I could hand over $100 dollars for a palette without feeling a bit of buyers remorse, but honestly all of the shades look gorgeous and I love that gold shimmer color! The fact that it got an overall score of A- is definitely tempting, but considering all the other awesome holiday sets coming out I’ll probably have to pass.
I totally understand! It’s a lot to put down all at once on a single item!
Love your look!
I think this might be it, the one thing I’ll get from the holiday collections. Of course, there are many more to come, but, if it’s not absolutely ridiculously expensive here I think I’ll buy it.
I do think it’s a pity with the purple and the plum, as that is two of my all time favourite eyeshadow colours, but I think the rest of the eyeshadows in the palette are all quite gorgeous.
I think I must go to Sephora and check if this is already for sale there. And if not check if it will even be available.
Thank you so much, Helene! So far, this is a goody 🙂
I love the plummy-brown eye look you did.
These shadows look great, except No. 16. Even that one looks like it could be worked with. Marc Jacobs did a nice job on this palette.
Thank you, Rachel!
I have absolutely no interest in buying it, but I love the packaging, and I’m just really pleased to see a high end LE eyeshadow palette with a high score, finally!
Finally <3
i purchased this sight unseen as soon as it was listed on sephora’s site. i’m glad you did a full review of it! i have tried two of the looks on the sheet that came with the palette, and so far i have to say i really love it! it’s not a typical palette at all. i thought after purchasing the siren and the parisienne, i would stop with the eyeshadow palette purchases, but this was just too good to pass up! i also picked up the sofia lip set, and while i think they are a little too small, i am so happy with the colors. i’m cool toned and had no issues with either item. definitely a splurge, but i feel justified. and that mirror. it’s amazing!
YAY! I’m thrilled to hear you’re enjoying your palette so much, Lauren!
I was waiting for the rating, etc…This will be my first Marc Jacobs palette and though the price was off putting, I got to see that this is fairly sized, etc. I was already very drawn to the colors but like another, I was hoping for a bad rating lol! I am excited to try this and it looks like a great everyday palette! Great casing too…I liked so much at first glance so I’ll be very excited to try it out. I do not normally put down 100 on a palette so I’m glad the score is good and the colors are diverse!
I can’t wait for you to try it, Tami!
I LOVE it!!!! wow wow wow! I think this is my favorite holiday palette so far & I’m a tarte & UD junkie! (I hauled a quite few lol) but man, the range of colors..and for the love of all that is holy, someone thought to put in warm colors!!!!..some people are purple’d out so props on the color choices! purple is a most beloved for fall..yes, but some of us are yawning if that is all it would offer. It’s nothing too wild and such range – I can’t rave enough about the color choices. it’s pretty much “everyday” colors with excellent quality…after your review, i was like SOLD! LOL but i’m very happy!! I always go to your reviews before i buy (especially if it’s 100 bucks) hands down, fave palette so far this year
YAYYYYY! It has been a favorite for me so far, too! I’m thrilled to hear you’re enjoying it as well since it is a $$ palette!
Mine just got here!!!! It’s beautiful. Thank you Christine, without your review I’d NEVER have forked out the $$ for this. I love it ❤❤❤
After using the palette for several days and a night out look my love of this palette has grown heaps. It’s truly worth the money. I’m really surprised over how much I love the mirror too! It’s such great quality, really adds to the value. No buyers remorse here 🙂 I can see this easily becoming my new most used palette. That’s saying something bc the original Naked has stood as my fav for years against dozens of new buys but me thinks it’s met it’s match.
YAYYYY! 😀
My friend who works at Sephora gave me a 20% off discount so I knew I had to take my FIRST designer makeup plunge ever. She said everyone who works at her Sephora won’t stop raving about it. So excited to try it. I usually gravitate towards BRIGHTS (electric palette) but I needed some neutrals since the chocolate bar palette let me down. I wish yeah there was less colors that are so similar, but I haven’t heard a throng bad about this one yet. So stoked to try this AND that I got $20.00 off (nearly)
