Urban Decay Urban Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette
Urban Decay Urban Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette

Urban Decay Urban Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette ($55.00 for 0.75 oz.) includes fifteen, full-sized eyeshadows (0.05 oz. each); five new shades, four permanent shades, and six shades from other palettes. I really liked the palette, and I think that the majority of the shades applied well over bare skin and lasted for seven to eight hours before creasing and/or fading. The pigmentation was typically good with soft, blendable textures that were easy to work with. This palette is all shimmer, though, so if you like satins and mattes to vary the finishes that you use, you’ll need to incorporate another palette. The three worst-performers were either more glittery or firmer/sheerer. It is exclusively available at urbandecay.com on October 20th and is limited edition.

Edited on 10/20/15 at 2:30PM PST: I just received an answer regarding availability on this palette (I emailed my long-time contact this morning), in brief: launches in their freestanding stores today but nothing online until early 2016. Yes, 2016. All of the palettes were sent to bloggers as a UD.com exclusive but apparently there was a change in distribution and now it is a Sephora exclusive.

Flashback is described as a “bright deep purple with pink sparkle.” It’s a meidum, violet purple with a soft, frosted finish. Voodoo is described as a “metallic purple shimmer with iridescent purple micro-glitter.” It’s a muted, deepened purple with neutral-to-warm undertones and a metallic sheen. Bordello is described as a “pale mauve shimmer with gold micro-glitter.” It’s a pinky-plum with warm undertones and copper sparkle. It had good pigmentation, but the texture was noticeably chunky due to the amount of glitter in it. It applied well enough, but it’s a shade you’ll want to apply before any base products as it drops a lot of glitter during application and some more during wear. Backlash is described as a “bright pink with orange floating pearl.” It’s a brightened, fuchsia pink with cool, bluish pearl. Daybreak is described as a “soft bronze with silver glitter.” It’s a medium, golden brown with warm undertones and micro-glitter. Burn is described as a “medium golden brown shimmer.” It’s a medium brown with warm, yellow undertones and a metallic sheen. There seemed to be slight bits of silver micro-glitter in this one, though it isn’t in the description. Ahhhh! Sold. I’ve been meaning to pick up a good “colorful” palette, and this has my name written all over it. I was pretty sure I would pick this over Vice4, but the review just sold me.

Now I just have to play the waiting game until October & hope no other holiday releases distract me…

Sarah Avatar

I love this but I really wish that there weren’t so many permanent/previously released shades in it :/ I have at least six of these shades already so I don’t think this would be worth it overall. Definitely gonna lean towards the Vice 4 instead.

Side note: its nice to see UD doing a little better with their palettes with these two releases!

Jane Avatar

Gosh, I like this palette. I don’t NEED it, and I can probably dupe most of it, but it’s so pretty. The design of the palette itself is holding me back though. I don’t like how bulky it is.

Katherine T. Avatar

OMG, I am DROOLING over all the greens, purples, and blues –and all got A/B ratings!! So impressed. I was already eyeing Evidence and Omen as singles. I can use every color in this palette, will go great with my brown eyes. I am going to be one of those people up at 12 AM trying to snag this one

Lacey Avatar

The beauty struggle is real. I own a few of these shades, but I know I’d use this palette a lot. *flails*

Maybe it’s the grouping of colors, but this is such a pretty palette to look at! It isn’t as chaotic as a lot of other color-heavy palettes.

Ginny Avatar

They almost could have nixed those browns in the last row and thrown in more greens, oranges or golds to make this like, a supplemental palette for someone who wanted to branch out from neutrals in a big way. As a collector of Sleek palettes I have plenty of colors and jewel tones, and so don’t really need this. Anyone who’s not totally sold on this or Vice 4 might check out Sleek’s new palette Enchanted Forest. It has dupes for C-Note, Robbery, Beat-down/Voodoo, Daybreak, and something kind of similar to Omen. Way cheaper of course.

Rebecca Avatar

I’m bummed that Bordello performed so poorly. It definitely seems like it was reformulated for the Shadow Box and this palette; the version I have from the Feminine palette is one of my favorite overall lid colors.

A Avatar

Ah I’m so torn on this one. This looks like exactly the kind of thing I’ve been thinking about splurging on for the holidays to get me more out of my comfort zone and try colours I wouldn’t pick in singles or smaller palettes but I think this has too many blues – the colour I find hardest to pull off for eyeshadow. Junkie looks gorgeous though.

Melissa Avatar

This reminded me so much of the anniversary palette they did. Three of the shades are in the anniversary palette and the pinks and neutrals look similar. I really like the look of this palette, but I think this is a pass since my anniversary palette is still in great condition.

Mariella Avatar

Good to see that some of the shadows that formerly had F ratings now have improved. As much as I’m not wild about this packaging (didn’t like it with the 15th Anniversary palette and don’t like it now either), I sure wish I could get my mitts on a few of these shadows (I already have 6 or 7 of them, so purchasing this might be foolish in any case) – especially PROTEST but also West, Burn and a few others.

Christine Avatar

There is overlap, and I’m pretty sure it’s on purpose since they’re using the same packaging, but the 15th Anniversary palette had a lot more neutrals–more browns, gray, black.

Bonnie Avatar

Hi Christine!
I just wanted to say I’m also looooving your three (!!!) eye-looks as well! Gorgeous. I’m not totally sold on this palette anymore, because a) I already have some of these, b) there are now so many colorful ones to choose from right now (I might cave for the KVD), and c) I’ve taken to collecting Inglot and Sleek palettes in recent months – but! I love looking at your eye looks. Such great inspo!!!

Nancy T Avatar

Ok, so I just died. This is so beyond gorgeous, that it took my capacity to breathe away. I think I am going to have to have this one even though it is all shimmer, because these shades are a definite TKO!!!

(P.S.: I lurrrve those awesome eye looks you did with it, definitely sold me! Pun intended, LoL!)

Nancy T Avatar

Thank you so much, Christine, for investigating the mystery surrounding this palette’s very unnerving non-release yesterday. At least now we all have some clarification on why it didn’t happen as planned or anticipated. Now the proverbial “ball” has been placed in Sephora’s court. Let’s see how they handle it. But again, thank you.

Katie Avatar

The swatches are gorgeous, but I’m not as in love as I was pre-swatch. The blues are too similar, and there’s too many pinks. I wish there was another green shade, and I wish the purples weren’t so…office-inappropriate. lol

P Jill Avatar

Only a few non performers out of 15? I like this and will prob purchase and gift.
I recently bought a couple of their matte lipsticks. I am pleased as a new customer to the UD website. They give larger sized samples of eye liners and shadows with purchases, free shipping incentives and ship orders quickly . Also, I can’t seem to resist those ” website exclusive” items.

Kimberly Avatar

The only colors I’m interested in are Junkie, Deep End, Bordello, and Burn, but I already have Deep End in the 15th Anniversary Palette, so buying a $55 palette for 3 (well four I guess) shadows doesn’t seem worthy it. Maybe if I liked 6 or 7 shades I could justify it. Oh well

Lorrin M Avatar

I want to love this palette so much because of the packaging, but I have at least 6 of these shades already 🙁 Good thing Vice 4 is a definite yes for me!

Allison Avatar

Such an appealing palette, but since it’s all shimmer shadows I fear it’s not for me. I may have to pick up the Inglot dupe (if it’s still available) of Protest, however, because I love that shade.

Ivy Avatar

IMO, they should have left the nudes out of the bottom two rows and put in more bold colours so there would actually be a, you know, spectrum. Don’t need anymore nudes, UD. Leave em out of the colourful palettes.

Quinctia Avatar

Looks awesome! Pretty much have all the shades that were previously released already, and have decent dupes for most the others. So it’s a no-go for me.

Would totally gift it to my sister if she had an interest in it and I could swing a good deal with Ulta points or something, though!

Genevieve Avatar

It turns out I love this palette more than Vice 4. The only thing is: what’s with the glitter? Satins are great too UD.
Anyway this rating is much better – even though I own Vice 2 – I still love this palette. It’s a pity about Prank – still a troublesome colour.
Thank you for all the hard work you have done over the past few days getting Vice 4 and the Spectrum reviews out in such detail. Your eye looks are sensational too.

Kelly Avatar

Love this! I think the colors in this are more cohesive than the Vice 4. The newest Vice palette just confuses me; the packaging is gorgeous but the color selection is odd.

Jessica Avatar

Looks beautiful! I might skip this simply because I do have the 15th anniversary palette and it looks like there’s a lot of overlap. Really excited to see such great palettes from UD this season though!

Rachael Avatar

I like this. A LOT. But I think I like the Kat Von D palette better. Once you get a review for that (I’m assuming you will) I’ll have a tough choice to make!

El Avatar

That blue eye look is a stunner.

I have most of the repromotes already, so this was going to be a miss for me anyway. Which is good, since it’s a US exclusive! But I’m happy it scored well.

Tish Avatar

I really like this palette and am pleased it got a better rating compared to the Vice 4 but a lot of the shades look similar/almost identical to some shadows in past limited edition UD palettes. Not so sure I can justify the price once it’s released here in Australia.

Thank you Christine for getting these reviews out quickly. Truly appreciate all the work you put into Temptalia.

Rachel Avatar

It’s so pretty… but I feel like I already have most of these shades, or something similar enough from UD. The packaging is *almost* enough to sell me, but I already have the 15th Anniversary palette, so I really need to turn a blind eye to the awesome matte black. Naked 3 was the last UD product I purchased – have I finally hit the saturation point where I don’t need every UD palette?! O.O

Alecto Avatar

My eyeshadows are all evenly split between pure matte and very complex shades (mostly duochromes), with almost zero shimmery/frosty/glittery pure colors. And I don’t own any Urban Decay shadows, so … I have no dupes of this palette. If I hadn’t just seen the Smashbox palette, I’d say this is a no-brainer … SOLD! Except now I want to see how the Smashbox palette does. It seems like the distribution of colors is better for the Smashbox palette (this palette has a handful of colors that are too close to each other in appearance) but it also has the blushes/highlighters, which I definitely don’t need. Hmmmmmm…

Ines Avatar

Hi Christine !
Thanks for sharing the swatches of this beautiful palette. I absolutely love it, but the ud website doesn’t ship outside of the US . Do you think there’s any chance that it’ll be sold somewhere in europe ?

Lindsey Avatar

I bought Bordello as a single because I though it looked like a good transitional color, but it is super sheer and has micro glitter fallout. I was so disappointed. I didn’t know took cosmetics back at that time. So, buyer beware, worst UD shadow EVER!!.

Claire L Avatar

This has my name all over it! I have the Naked 2 and 3 palettes which I love but none of the bright ones. The Vice ones didn’t quite grab me as much as this has, although Vice 4 has come close, thanks to your reviews! Saw your latest review for Viseart Sultry Nudes and can’t wait for your Cool Matts review, will save up for a Viseart palette next year. I’m splurging out on this palette this season however, especially since it’s a limited edition!

Katie Avatar

Thanks for the review Christine! Happy to see UD improving since I’ve always been urban decay shadow girl and the last few palettes have disappointed. I will be purchasing!

Katherine T. Avatar

Oh, I’m SO excited, so glad Sephora is selling and hopefully don’t have to wait until Oct to grab. I will be stalking their website everyday until I get it

Marissa Avatar

i know that i was complaining that the naked smoky had B- as a rating but in my defense it was bc all the other naked ones had a better grade… anyway i love this one! i would gladly get this over the vice4! so colorful.

April Avatar

This looks so beautiful, especially the layout as others have mentioned, but I already have four of the shades… all the blues plus voodoo. Being a UD junkie makes it difficult to not have repeats, lol. Do you think this would still be worth the money?

Chelle Avatar

I really love the colors in this palette but I feel like I have a lot of shades like this already. I’ve been trying to stop buying anything that’s too close to what I already have.

Buuuuttttt… I love that the packaging is reusable and that the shadows can be removed. Ugh, I’m such a sucker for packaging.

Emilie Avatar

I like this, but 3 repeats from the Vice 2?! Seriously? It also might as well be 4 because Omen is so similar to Vice 2’s Betrayal. Flashback looks very similar to Fishnet (which I have). Meh. Bummer, I’ve been wanting to buy a colorful palette but this just isn’t the one. Maybe I’ll just finally give into the Electric Palette.

Sabrina S Avatar

Siiiigh.. Ok fine, I bought it. I don’t have any colorful shadows as I’m more of a neutral girl, but I figured that I need this to expand my collection lol.

Amee Avatar

I think you have sold me on this palette and I think I will get the Vice 4 as well! I can’t bare to wait another month though for this palette. I’ve already decided since I live in NZ if I can’t get it off the UD website I’ll get it when it is released in Australia. Haha yes I’ll probably be paying horrendous shipping but it will totally be worth it

Sabrina S Avatar

I initially wasn’t going to get this, but decided to pull the trigger! I’m so glad I did! I just got it in the mail and I’m in LOOOOOVE! Could you please do some sort of tutorial on that blue look? It looks amazing!

Krista M Avatar

I already got the Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix palette since I didn’t know about this palette. Are they different enough to have both and be worth it or are the colors pretty similar?

Jiselaz Avatar

What happened to this palette releas date❓ It is said to be released on Oct. 20 2015❗️ This palette has disappeared off of the UrbanDecay.com website and all other websites❗️ Christine do you know anything about it?

Heather C Avatar

I am honestly surprised UD didn’t throw in a black of any sort into this palette. I’m kind of relieved though – it left room for one more colored shade :).

Kiwi Avatar

I called urban decay twice and they said that the palette isn’t launching today and they don’t j know when it will launch. Then they laid the blame with the beauty bloggers for supposedly inventing a date.

Christine Avatar

I emailed Urban Decay at 7:30AM PST but haven’t heard back yet.

I was told directly from Urban Decay’s PR department that Urban SPectrum was launching on urbandecay.com and in their store on 10/20, and the press release listed: “Urban Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette (SRP $55) is available exclusively at urbandecay.com.”

Ann Avatar

I am so annoyed with Urban Decay right now. How is it possible that everyone got the “made up” 10/20 date? I feel they messed up the launch date.

Tatiana Avatar

Where was this supposed to be available? I’m looking on the Urban Decay site where it was supposed to be exclusive and don’t see it. Yet reading comments I see some folks got it over a month ago at Sephora. Darn, really wanted to surprise my daughter with this one at Christmas.

Evie Avatar

Sobbing at this update. But at least I can stop refreshing now.

On the up side (even if I have to invent one), that gives me more time to budget for it and makes room for other holiday purchases. I still want it ~real bad, though.

Nancy T Avatar

I hear you, Evie! The past 2 days have me super upset with Urban Decay for pulling the SAME crap that they did last year with the Vice LTD Palette. Once was enough! Two years in a row is horrible business practice and or management.
I do still want to buy this palette, but next year, I think I’ll be paying more attention to other brands instead of UD, seeing how they mangle their holiday collection releases.

Beautymarked Avatar

This is now back at Sephora, Christine, and was re-marketed as “Can’t take my eyes off hue”. I finally got mine today after salivating at the reviews in September and the disappointment of UD not releasing it last year. So happy with my purchase, the quality was really good, buttery and I like it better than the Vice Reloaded XX.
