Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix Eyeshadow Palette

Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.96 oz.) includes 24 eyeshadows in an assortment of rainbow hues, plus seven more neutral-hued shades. We’re still early in the holiday season, but I liked this one, and many shades worked surprisingly well over bare skin without losing vibrancy. There are a few shades that are misses and could use improvement and others that need a primer underneath to fix some minor imperfections. I wish the neutrals had been in more of a gradient order with less emphasis on light and lighter, as there could have been more transition shades for light-medium and darker skin tones (I ended up mixing the shades together to get something that wasn’t so stark on my skin tone). This palette is a good value with plenty of product; the Shade + Light Eye palette has 0.60 oz. of product for $46.00 or $76.67/oz., and with this larger palette, you’re paying $61.46/oz.

Swoon is a bright, fuchsia-pink with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff with a lightly powdery texture, but it was really blendable and didn’t lose coverage when applied to the lid. It wore well for eight hours on me. Destroyer is a medium, orange-toned red with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a blendable texture that ran a little powdery but was easy enough to use. This one should do well over a primer, I think, but if you want to wear it over bare skin, pat it on with a flatter brush. It lasted for eight hours on me. Fran is a sunshine yellow with warm undertones and barely-there satin shimmer over a matte finish. The texture was lightly powdery, and this shade was prone to sheering out a bit when applied to bare skin, so I would recommend using a primer to keep this true-to-pan in color. It wore well for eight hours on me. Urban Decay Calavera (LE, $19.00)(95% similar). ColourPop Caution (LE, $4.50) is lighter (95% similar). Inglot #323 (P, $6.00) is brighter (95% similar). Legend is a slightly muted, light-medium yellow gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation with a lightly dry texture that seemed to keep it from binding as well, so it didn’t go on as smoothly or as intensely as many gold eyeshadows do. This shade wore for eight hours. Urban Decay Dothraki (LE, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Heaven Loves You (LE, $18.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Vinyl is a light-medium, chartreuse green with warm, yellow undertones and subtle gold shimmer (but it is mostly matte in practice). The pigmentation is better than it looks, but the texture is really thin and dusty, so the color sheers out a lot on bare skin. It really needs a primer or colored base to pop. The color started to fade after seven hours of wear. Makeup Geek Fuji (DC, $6.00) is cooler (95% similar). Sydney Grace Green Anjou (P, $5.25) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (95% similar). Hyperballad is a medium-dark, bluish-teal with cool undertones and a matte finish. This was another shade that had a very soft texture that ran powdery, which meant that it didn’t apply well over bare skin. With some coaxing, it can be packed on and intensified by layering on bare skin, but it is one that would be better over a primer for sure. It lasted for eight hours. Makeup Geek Shark Bait (DC, $6.00) is warmer (95% similar). Sephora Shawn (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). LORAC Dream Girl #4 (LE, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Synth is a bright, cyan-like blue with very faint silver micro-shimmer over a matte finish. It had good color payoff with a soft, blendable consistency that applied fairly well to bare skin. I was able to retain most of the vibrancy without primer, but to maximize your oomph, I would still recommend a primer. It showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear. Echo is a medium-dark, violet purple with cool, blue undertones and silver sparkle over a matte finish. The sparkle gets lost, as it doesn’t bind with the underlying powder. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque, slightly buildable, color payoff, but this was definitely a shade that needed something to adhere to (like a primer or base product). I tried to pack it on and only blend minimally, but it still sheered out a lot. It faded within seven hours of wear. KVD Beauty Fascination Street (LE, ) is less shimmery, warmer (95% similar). Anthem is a plummy purple with warm undertones and a satin micro-shimmer. It had semi-sheer color coverage with a silky feel that ran dusty, so it didn’t perform well on bare skin as it had a tendency to sheer out. It can be built-up to about 80% coverage at most (without a primer). This eyeshadow lasted for seven and a half hours for me. I’m so inspired to do a rainbow look! Love the looks you came up.
This is a pass for me because of the palette size and as a long time collector/hoarder…I have plenty of dupes lol.

Ginny Avatar

I’m not so into the mega brights, so this palette isn’t on my list, BUT if it was I would be really disappointed in the seven middle shades. I mean, there’s three whites. And two beiges. Why? I’m pale as heck and even I only need one white/ivory and one “flesh tone” in a palette.

Kelly Avatar

I like that there are several pale transition shades, because it works for me personally…I always hit pan on the lightest shade in a palette, so it would be nice to have enough of them to balance out the colours. But I can understand why a lot of people wouldn’t prefer that, especially if they aren’t fair. Thats why I also like palettes with a pale transition shade that is much larger than the rest of the pans, I wish they were all like that.

Cat Avatar

I haven’t heard KVD talk about this palette, but I’m guessing this is to be used on your eyes the way paints are used on a canvas. If I’m right, those middle shades have different undertones and intensities so they can be blended with the colorful shades in the palette (and this palette is ALL about those colorful shades, not about the center neutrals) in order to deepen, lighten, or otherwise alter the colors in the outside wheel. Seeing how those center shades could be used in conjunction with the more intense colors is what ultimately convinced me that I could work with this palette.

Deidre Avatar

Glad to see this got a good rating overall as I was thinking of getting this one. Although I am still holding out for the Marc Jacobs palette to come onto the Canadian Sephora website so I can get that one.

Katie L Avatar

Yes! I never wear bright colors- but these are all wearable when paired with the correct neutrals. This is great for my collection, because it has a little bit of every color.

Katie Avatar

A couple of shades are very disappointing, but it does seem like a primer would help a lot with this one. Which primer would you suggest, Christine? The Nars Smudgeproof, or do you think something with more of an opaque/white base?

Christine Avatar

For a few of them, something with slight tackiness/whiter base will probably be better (e.g. Echo or Vinyl), but regular primer (like NARS) should be fine for most shades. If you want the MOST intensity, white base will always result in more vibrant color.

Katherine T. Avatar

Skip for me. I was mostly interested in the blues/greens/ purples, and after taking a closer look at the preliminary swatches on my home monitor, I knew some of them weren’t going to score well. And with my oily lids, those colors aren’t going to last, even with primer or cream base. I got the UD Spectrum palette instead. But I like the eye looks you did.

Amanda Avatar

I have this and I also have oily lids. These shadows are all nice, they last all day with no problem. I haven’t had any issues with any of them. I certainly wouldn’t rate a single color in here as low as a D, but everyone is different.

Nicole Avatar

I just got this late last week and haven’t have time to play with it yet. I was hoping for a high A. But, since I use primer regularly, that should help it out.

Christine or anybody, how does one determine when to use a primer vs. a base like a paint pot or cream shadow?

Christine Avatar

For me…

Primer: for improved longevity, smoother base, easier blending, and minor improvements in pigmentation
Base: for major improvements in pigmentation, products prone to fall out or sheering out, or to alter the color/texture (colored base)

Alyssa Avatar

I use bases when I want bright colors to pop, so for this palette, I’d probably use a base. If I wanted to wear the colors in a more subtle way, I’d just use a primer.

I usually start with regular eye primer. If that doesn’t work, I try cream bases, cream shadow sticks, NYX Milk pencil, even Colour Pop shadows as bases. If that fails, I use the GA Eye Tints, but they tend to add a shimmery, metallic look to everything, and sometimes you just want a matte or satin look. If that doesn’t work, time to start looking for my receipt to return! I haven’t tried any glitter glues yet.

Thanks Katherine! I would have never thought to try a CP shadow. I bet that may make some interesting combos. I have cream shadows to use and plenty of primers, NYx milk, Tf glitter glue, Elf’s glitter primer (they work). But lately I haven’t been liking my old stand by Painterly paint pot. I feel like it just is too thick and drawing attention to the texture on my lid or something. That’s where cream shadows start coming in. I’ll have to try out the CP shadow tip! Thanks! 🙂

Wow! I love the eye looks you did Christine! And the palette looks gorgeous! Sadly I don’t live in the US but a friend is going over in October so I may have to ask her if she would pick it up for me when she’s in Sephora. But I’m also totally digging the MAC Morning Light Quad too, ugh decisions decisions 🙁 I’m cool toned and pale as paper so I’m thinking the Morning Light Quad would make me look ill although I probably would only use a couple of shadows in this palette to actually “wear” (as in not just around my house lol!) I don’t know what to do *sigh* x

Thank you so much for replying! I’ve been reading your blog for AGES and I’ve only in the last few weeks plucked up the courage to comment (I’m so used to people turning there noses down at me because I’m so young) and because you have such a wonderful community here on Temptalia I thought why not! Anyway I really appreciate you replying 🙂

I was actually supposed to be going on the trip (but because of unforeseen health problems I’m not going) so I’m majorly sad when I see all these gorgeous holiday collections which we are not going to get in Britain.

I love love love me some golds and coppers (especially rose gold! Naked 3 I’m talking about you!!) I’m one of them people who wears pretty much everything 🙂 My motto is “people are going to stare, make it worth there while” lol!

Thank you so much Christine for all the hard work you have put in to make this site the awesome place that it is. You and Temptalia have helped me through some extremely tough times <3

I honestly don't know why this comment is soooooooo long sorry 🙂 once I start talking I can't stop lol!

Yay cool! That’s great to know 🙂 I am definitely one of those people who can’t resist MAC especially if it’s limited edition so I think I always knew I would go for that one! Thank you so much for your help (I’m so bad at making decisions so hearing others opinions really helps me) 🙂
Thank you <3

I was expecting this to get somewhere in the B range from the sneak peek! And you can definitely see some of the pigmentation problems in that second look. But it is nice to see this palette get a better review than last year’s holiday palette.

Bonnie Avatar

Haha!! Ani_Bee and Christine I came here to say the exact same thing!! I’m disappointed enough with this to probably pass, since the grades are all over the place – but I have a BUNCH of Inglot dupes (already have a list in my phone that I cross reference!) and honestly, I feel like I’d be a lot better off just buying more Inglot instead of more palettes at this point!

Ella Avatar

I love the brights but for some reason the layout bothers me? I think it’s bc I prefer minimalistic, sleek styles and there’s just so much spacing between pans lol. Such a silly reason.

But either way I love holiday palette season! I can’t wait for your review on mega pro 2 though! If you do it? Lol

Alyssa Avatar

I’m a little disappointed that some of my favorite colors got C and D ratings, but I am in love with the looks you put together when trying them out. I think I’ll go to Sephora and prime my inner wrist and swatch all of the disappointing shades to see if they work any better that way. This palette would be perfect to help round out UD’s Electric palette.

Amanda Avatar

I bought this but was waiting for your review to open it! Looks like the colors I was most excited about are good performers, and I always use a primer anyways – so I’m keeping it 🙂 I LOVE the rainbow looks you came up with – can’t wait to try this for myself.

Ash Avatar

Any idea on when sephora’s October sale will start (spin the wheel) and the November/Dec sales?
I will wait until then to buy if they do the October one.

Shannon Avatar

I have dupes for virtually all of these, and the couple I don’t I wouldn’t wear anyway (speaking to you top row of shadows!) And at least the dupes I have seem to be better performing as well.

Thanks for your hard work, and once again beautiful eye looks!

It certainly appears that the warm shades and neutrals ( and Lemmy! Woohoo! ) all apply beautifully! Buuut, same old same old with the PURPLES and BLUES!!! WHY?!?!?
This seals it for me; I must have UD Spectrum! And perhaps Vice 4?

I’m still waiting for mine to come in the mail but if the colors don’t show up well enough on me with just a normal primer I will probably swap this one for the urban decay vice 4 or the spectrum palette. No point in wasting money even if I do like a lot of her stuff. Fingers crossed they work well on chocolate skin.

The sight of that Vinyl swatch makes me sad, but there are so many gorgeous colours that have reassured me that I was right in ordering this. Your rainbow eye is fantastic! I love the intense black eyeliner against the swirl of vivid colours.

Genevieve Avatar

I love the rainbow look – but the quality of the shadows really varies and the colours that you love could be of the poorer rating. To me, it just feels like a lesser version of a Vice palette. I think this palette is bulky too. The only shadow I really liked was Lemmy.

Vanessa Avatar

I love the colors! I hope we get it in stores soon! I already unpacked the UD Vice 4 the other day. Do you think using TF Shadow Insurance then a white base would help? Which one would you recommend? I know of the Nyx pencil in Milk and their white base pot and of the Sephora Coll. Eyeshadow/Liner pencil in a white color as well. I’ve never tried any of those though. It doesn’t matter what brand or if it’s waterproof, everything creases without primer so that’s why I’ve been hesitant to use anything else alone.

I’m passing on this one. While I am really happy that bright oranges and pinks got good grades, it doesn’t make up for six of the brights being awful. If the purples and blues are bad, then the palette is a waste for me. At least at this price.

I kept reading “dusty texture” and “dry,” and it just took me back to last year’s Starstudded. The fallout was too much for even me, and I’m thinking I might have a similar problem with this one.

Rachel R. Avatar

I bet I could at least get close to most of the shades. I grabbed the three Wet n Wild Venice Beach LE palettes that came out this summer and had the super-neon reds and pinks amongst other colors. Not exactly the same as these, but close.

Plus UD Electric, Sleek Acid and Ultra Mattes V1, Makeup Revolution Color Chaos and EatSleepMakeupRepeat. Who know’s what else…

If I were smart, I’d go to Sephora, swatch all the brights on my arm, then go home and figure out a dupe list. lol

Rachel R. Avatar

And I’ll check out your fantastic dupe list in more detail when I get back from my trip. I skimmed through it and saw some I had. Thanks for all your hard work on this, btw.

Cat Avatar

Knowing you were able to achieve such beautiful looks without a primer makes me feel even better about this palette. The black eyeliner plays well against the vibrancy of the first look, and that Marc Jacobs liner in the second look seems as if it was made especially for those shadows! Since I’m not actually getting this until Christmas, I’m going to have to visit Sephora once it’s in stock so I can swatch ’til my heart’s content and get a better idea of all the possibilities!

Bonnie Avatar

Christine your rainbow & colorful eye looks are EVERYTHING!!!!! You’re so talented at what you do!
Can I ask you for an opinion? If forced to choose only one Palette to own between UD Spectrum, Vice 4 and this one (KVD), which would you choose? (Without respect to what other UD shadows you own – just your favorite of the three)
I’m thinking I’ll only pick one, because I have a decent Inglot collection now and just bought a bunch of MUG shadows so I’m trying to pare back a little. 😉

Tami Avatar

Thanks for the detailed review! I was waiting to see, though I already snapped this up. What really grabbed me about this palette were the colors w/out micro glitter and the colorful mattes. They can tone down easy enough too. I get so tired of all matte palettes being neutral except for maybe IT cosmetics taking the dive to produce color. The biggest issue is how big and bulky the palette is but that’s ok – I love how vibrant the colors are and though I love my neutrals, I have far too many – needed some color in there to change things up – thanks again, your reviews are the best!

Chelsea Avatar

I love this palette so much lol. I did have a few shadows that I had to work with but I dont mind. I never go without a primer anyways (oily lids). It performs well for the most part and I get beautiful looks out of it. I’m not even into color, Im definitely a neutral eye kind of girl, but Im about to look like a bag of skittles for the next few weeks lol !!

Kayle Avatar

I love the rainbow looks you did! I’ll have to pass on this one because I rarely have the opportunity to wear colorful eyeshadow, but they look so gorgeous. Rewind, Harpsichord, Lemmy and Vox are my favorites, but I have similar shades to them so no worries.
