LORAC Mega Pro 3 Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
LORAC Mega Pro 3 Palette
LORAC Mega Pro 3 Palette ($59.00 for 0.45 oz.) includes 32 (!) eyeshadows split across two finishes–matte and shimmer. The palette is an earthy take on neutrals; a little smokier, not quite as overtly warm-toned, and some colors have a subdued/muted quality to them. There are a few cooler-toned shades in the palette as well. I have found that LORAC mattes, while often silky and very soft, are powdery or dusty, which makes them harder to use in practice, as they’ll sheer out, appear dry/dusty on the lid, or fade more readily. I think the matte formula used in this year’s palette is better than last year’s–it is not as prone to kicking up a ridiculous amount of product in the pan with the barest touch of a brush, but it is still a softer, dustier formula that benefits greatly from a primer for better adherence as well as longer wear. LORAC shimmers are better and more consistent, as they are soft, a little dusty or thin, but they tend to be rather pigmented and apply fine to bare skin and last seven to eight hours. If you’re normally a fan of LORAC’s eyeshadows, I think you will enjoy this palette. If you feel like your eyelids eat LORAC matte eyeshadows, this might be better than the normal, but it might still be an issue. The Mega Pro 3 Palette should be available today exclusively at Ulta.
You can use our palette vs. palette tool to compare this palette against other neutral ones, but I have also pulled out two to get you started: Mega Pro vs. Mega Pro 3; Mega Pro 2 vs. Mega Pro 3.
Pink Cream is a pale pink with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a smooth, creamy consistency that was a smidgen dusty in the pan due to how soft it was. Tan is a muted, light-medium pink with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was great, while the texture felt so soft that it was a little powdery, it was a lot less powdery and prone to clumping as some of LORAC’s past matte shades have been for me, so it was easier to work with. It started to fade after seven hours of wear. Smashbox Totally Nude (PiP, ) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Pecan is a muted, medium-dark pinky-brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which wasn’t really buildable unless you had a lightly tacky base under it. The consistency was soft, finely-milled, and blendable. This shade wore well for seven hours on me. ColourPop Made to Last (P, $4.50) is darker (95% similar). Natasha Denona Garmon (352CM) (LE, ) is darker, warmer (95% similar). Walnut is a medium-dark, yellowed brown with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy consistency that was finely-milled and silky to the touch. This shade lasted for just over seven hours on me before fading noticeably. Dusty Mauve is a muted, medium-dark lavender purple with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was soft enough that it had some powdery kick up when used, but it adhered better than anticipated and did not sheer out immediately upon blending it out. Eggplant is a dark, reddish burgundy with warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which applied fairly evenly and wasn’t too challenging to blend out (it could have been more forgiving, though). Dark Navy is a subdued, blackened navy blue with subtle, cooler undertones and barely-there satin shimmer over a matte finish. The shimmer really wasn’t noticeable on the lid, and as a result, it looked and performed as a matte finish would. The texture was silky in feel, but it was dusty and more prone to sheering out, so this is one that would benefit from a primer. It wore well for eight hours before fading. Tarte Midnight Kiss (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). Smashbox Harbor (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Switch Me On (LE, $20.00) is brighter (95% similar). Crepe is a light beige with warmer undertones and a matte finish. The powder felt silky and very smooth in the pan, but it had a very strong white base and tended to look whiter against my skin tone, so it’s one of those shades that might appear chalky on some complexions. It had good pigmentation with a touch of fall out during application. The color started to fade after seven hours of wear. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Night Owl #4 (PiP, )(100% similar). Hourglass Atmosphere #1 (PiP, )(100% similar). Makeup Geek So Pale (LE, $6.00) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Too Faced Rock Candy (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Toffee is a light-medium, subdued orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. It was moderately dusty–one of the looser shades in the palette–so it sheered out noticeably when applied to bare skin; I would definitely recommend using a primer to make this shade apply and adhere better. It had so-so color coverage and lasted for six hours. Urban Decay Chaser (PiP, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Tarte Booty (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). Mist is a light, bluish gray with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage, which applied fairly well to bare skin, though the softness meant some dustiness, which tended to make it sheer out just a bit on the skin. Vintage is a medium brown with warm, olive undertones and a satin finish. Hickory is a deep brown with subtle, reddish undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation paired with a soft, lightly dusty texture, as it was thinner than some of the other shades, but I felt like it built up well in practice. Maple is a medium-dark brown with warm, orangy undertones and a matte finish. It was richly pigmented and had a soft, lightly dusty consistency that didn’t kick up too much excess in the pan, and it did not lose its intensity when applied and blended out on the skin. This shade wore nicely for eight hours on me. Jouer Midnight Swim (LE, ) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Make Up For Ever ME614 Graphite Brown (DC, $21.00) is darker (95% similar). Pomegranate is a bright, medium-dark red with warm, coppery undertones and a satiny sheen. It had good color coverage, but it appeared lighter and less intense swatched and applied to the lid than it did in the pan. The consistency was thinner and a bit dusty, but it was workable and wasn’t fussy when I used it. This shade wore well for seven and a half hours before fading. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Siren #2 (LE, ) is more shimmery, warmer (95% similar). Sephora Brick (PiP, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). Tarte Revel (P, $14.00) is cooler (95% similar). Viseart Mars (GPV2 #16) (P, ) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). Sleek MakeUP Sunset #8 (PiP, $9.99) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (90% similar). Huda Beauty Turkish Delight (PiP, ) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). Coloured Raine Noblewoman (PiP, $6.99) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). Chanel Éclat Énigmatique #4 (LE, ) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Urban Decay Salazen Grum (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Urban Decay Afterparty (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). Makeup Geek Curtain Call (P, $9.99) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Coloured Raine Passion (DC, $6.99) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Licorice is a blackened purple with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The consistency was looser in the pan, so you’ll want to make sure to tap the brush off prior to applying to the lid to avoid excessive fall out during application. It had rich, opaque color coverage that applied well to bare skin and blended out fairly easily. I noticed the color faded after seven and a half hours of wear. NARS Tatar (P, $25.00) is darker (95% similar). Make Up For Ever D830 Black Rose (DC, $21.00) is warmer (95% similar). LORAC Boots (LE, $19.00) is cooler (95% similar). Pat McGrath Smoked Amethyst (LE, $25.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). NARS Debauched (Right) (DC, $25.00) is more muted (90% similar). I plan to get this as a birthday gift for myself today! I always wear Lorac eyeshadow with primer which helps its performance, so I have a feeling this palette will fall into the B+/A- range for me. I tend to not have problems with 95% of their shadows and love them!
If you have liked 95% of their eyeshadows, I’m sure you’ll like this one!
You did it by October 2! You rock!!
Thank you!
Thank you for your hard work! I wanted to like it but just like you said, my eyelids “eat” Lorac shadows!
Aww, sorry to hear that your eyelids have an appetite for LORAC eyeshadows! I have had that experience with some brands (more so than with these), and it sucks!
This product is the launch I look forward to every year – I wished Lorac was still carried in Canada, but it’s such a shame it isn’t anymore. I would imagine this white packaging would get dirty fairly quickly too…
It’s so weird to me that LORAC doesn’t have a Canadian retailer lined up! But yes, the white packaging definitely gets dirty!
How do you feel these compare to the Lorac Pro 1 and 2 in terms of the formula? I always hear people say that the mega releases are lower quality than the original.
The wear is better for me (without primer) for the Pro 1 and 2 palettes. In terms of texture/feel, I think they’re comparable to the Mega Pro 3, but the wear of the Mega Pro 3 is lower. If you normally wear primer, though, I think you would be fine!
A possible must-have. Thanks for the swatches, Christine!
No problem, Mary D!
Would this be a good introduction to Lorac eyeshadows? Or would you recommend sticking to one of their regular Pro palettes?
I think it would be a good introduction, actually! 🙂
soo, if i own the nakeds, too faced chocolate pallets and the anastasia modern Renaissance i probably don’t need this then? Ive never used Lorac before so im not sure of their formula either.
If you have no problems with Too Faced’s formula, you’ll probably like LORAC’s, IMO! Of course, with that many neutral palettes, you don’t NEED this.
Great advice. I told myself this very thing. I have more than I will ever need or use.
Then I still bought it along with 3 other things I don’t need.
I just promised myself a no buy/low buy for the next 6 months.
This looks more interesting reviewed than it did at first glance, by far. It’s not relentlessly warm-toned, thank goodness, and you made a beautiful look with it, Christine. The fact that the silvers and grays didn’t perform very well is holding me back, however. Do you think the fact that I always use primer would make much difference?
Yes, it definitely will, Fran! LORAC’s formula is one that definitely benefits from primer across the board – longevity, application, pigmentation, etc. They are pretty easy to work with on bare skin, and they adhered better than last year’s palette for me, but the wear was still a bit short. Primer definitely fixes the longevity issue!
That’s good to know, thanks!
I like some of the colors in here, and I can see someone getting many great eye looks out of this palette. And it’s not all 50 shades of brown either, as I see plums, black/grays, reds, etc. But I already have the Lorac Unzipped and Lorac Gold Unzipped (both of which I love dearly), so I think I’m covered for many of the neutral shades, and I prefer smaller palettes anyway. And of course, I have many, many colorful shadows in my stash, but great job reviweing this! It must have been a huge undertaking
Reviews like this feel endless, since after I write the review, look for dupes, then I have to enter the dupes, so there’s a feeling of, “Oh, it’s done,” followed by “just kidding! Now you have to enter in how each shade compares x200!”
This is a gorgeous one! And the looks you did above, especially those 1st two, gave me some inspiration to shop my stash!
With the sheer amount of neutral shades in my stash, I only spotted several must-have shades in this palette that I do not as yet own. But there’s MUG Steampunk, UD Gash or MAC Ruddy, and possibly could get away with using MUFE Black Rose for Licorice, although I would rather have something more a blackened purple like Licorice.
I think you have plenty of options to get close to Licorice! You could even take a purple and add a bit of black eyeshadow on top 🙂
Not interested in this guy (for me it’s too warm, too mid-tone, too earthy, too dupable from my stash and the Lorac formula is on the soft side for my liking) but holy wow, CHRISTINE!
How did you get this up so quickly??? You must sleep as little as I do to get this in-depth, fantastically-done review (as always). That is the incredible part of this for me. So appreciate your amazing work ethic but also hope you got to rest a bit after the testing sessions for this! Good thing for testing that it’s such a soft formula since a palette this large with a longer wearing formula would be impossible to test that quickly. By the Seven you are SO talented <3
I only allotted four hours to sleep since I got it, so I could for sure do two longevity tests per day (on two eyes, so that’s four sets of eyeshadows I can test per day) – especially since LORAC runs 7-8 hours and now 10+! I normally get 5-6 hours of sleep, but I usually TRY for 7-8 hours (like I give myself the time to do so, getting into bed, not setting the alarm, etc.).
You need an extra set of testing eyelids my dear, haha. I figured you must’ve broken it down to something like that to get this in so quickly. Your dedication seriously always inspires me to do more work. I usually get 4-5 so at least going from your usual 5-6 to a couple 4-hour nights isn’t too much of an adjustment. But still, hope you get a good chunk of resting time soon since holiday madness is in full swing AND there are so many huge releases now. Everyone and their mother making 100+ lipstick collections haha.
I will be back to my regular hours tomorrow, I think! Trying to get the Kat Von D palette finished up a little faster as well 🙂 At this point, I just need to start knocking out reviews before they stack up to the point where it’s overwhelming!
^^Of course as always no offense meant to those really digging on this palette! If I didn’t have a lot of dupes/liked the Lorac formula bit more/needed more neutrals or mid-tones I could definitely see this being worthwhile. Probably doesn’t need to be stated but of course don’t want anyone feeling downer about a purchase because it isn’t for me. There are definitely some very lovely colors.
Rose Quartz is my favorite shade. I like the palette but I don’t love it :/
Aww! 🙁
There are a few colours in the palette I really like, and have no dupes for, so I’m going to study the dupelists carefully. I do have dupes for quite a lot, I think, so I’m not going to try to get this, it’s hard anyway as it’s not available in Europe, or at least not in my part.
You did an excellent job, reviewing and making lovely eyelooks. Thank you for all the hard work!
Thanks, Helene!
Thank you so much for the hard work you put into these reviews. Your reviews are my go-to.
I picked this up today, couldn’t resist with the 3x points for platinum, 2x points for birthday month, $10 off, and gift with purchase!
Hope you love yours, Monica!
angels are singing and I have tears in my eyes. I was waiting for your swatches and review on this!! lol I am such a sucker because I definitely don’t need another PRO palette. But it’s so pretty…
It’s tough once you have a few palettes!
Thank you so much for posting your review. You really are amazing! I don’t know how you do it.
No problem!
Cannot believe you have this done already! Oh, wow, but you always push to the limit. Thanks! I was surprised that this was so dupable, esp given my stash preferences. Many of the shades I enjoyed fared more poorly. Would I use it? Def. Would I have to pull a bunch of palettes to get the dupes? Yes. Does it violate my new 2 dupe rule? Only very occasionally. But many shades have single dupes. Think I will back burner this, because I need it like we need another day of rain. #2 lasted for a while; maybe later. Doubt I would regret it, if I didn’t get it. Funny, bec it initially impressed me a lot. Echo Nancy’s sentiments about really only wanting to get something unique. Maybe they should include TMS (too much stash) in the dsm. Maybe with my pic. Not good. Sometimes you just have to quote Nancy Reagan. Just say no. Takes a lot of weighing pros and cons to do that.
I’m waiting to catch up on Zzzs tonight! Haha!
I always find the idea of putting something on the backburner, revisiting in a week (or month, whatever) and weighing whether I still want it then helps any immediate feelings of want from overriding reason!
This is one HUGE palette with shades lots of similar and a few different shades. Personally i am not into these mega palettes, but I can see how this one would be valuable if you didn’t have any Vices or Pro Palettes.
Not exactly sold on the quality of all the shadows. -eg Dark Navy.
Thank you for your hard work in testing and assessing all of these shades. It was a mammoth effort.
Mega palettes like these are definitely not for everyone! I can’t even decide if I’m a big palette user or not (normally), lol, at times.
Wow Cider and Rose Quartz are stunning!!! I’m still undecided on this palette…leaning towards maybe yes after this review it’s a little better than I expected! I just ordered KVD Matte Metal last night, and EL Modern Mercury today!!! Soooo excited about that. This one, is just a maybe. I do really like it. But it’s not a must have. Christine I cannot believe how quickly you reviewed this. 4 hours of sleep to get this up for us. Amazing. You are inspiring!!!
Modern Mercury! YAY!!
I don’t know if this is a must-have. Do you like LORAC eyeshadows in general?
Quick question, I just got the new KVD palette and am picking up the Mario/Anastasia tomorrow. Is this a must have or a pass? I’m a MUA and just a makeup junkie in general. Just trying to decide what to pick up this holiday season. Thanks so much!!!!
I don’t think it’s a must-have, but it really depends on you! Do you like LORAC’s formula? How many palettes do you already have? Would you use this one often?
Thank you, that’s what I needed to know. I have a lot so just wondered if this was anything special or different. Does that make sense?
It does! 🙂
I purchased this palette when Ulta made it available for Platinum members and I was so excited. I received the palette, swatched it, and found that I would not be able to use half of the matte shades because they come off ashy on my NW50 skin. (run-on…lol) I’m a firm believer that mattes are the backbone of a pre made palette. It’s easy for most companies to do a shimmer, but mattes are really tricky. So when I was trying to decide if I was going to keep this palette, I decided to do an all matte eye. While it came out decent, I was not impressed. I promptly returned it to Ulta. There was too many smaller and indie brands out there that do a much better job then this palette did. (i.e. Colour Pop, MUG, and Coastal Scents)
I am bummed to hear that they did not work well on your skin tone, but I appreciate you letting us all know so I can keep your feedback under my cap should someone with a darker skin tone ask me about that!
What are some of your favorite mattes, though?
I looked through my stash and these are some of my favorite mattes. Sorry for the long list…lol

You’re awesome Christine!! I read your blog almost daily. I remember you having a request by a reader to have this up by October 2. I see you pulled that off!! Very impressive. I got it when platinum perk to get early. I’m loving your eye looks, going to try to recreate these. I especially love the first one :).!
Thanks, Emily! Glad you got yours! How do you like it so far?
I’m really liking the palette over all. Dusty Mauve , Violent Grey and Pink Cream have been my favorites so far. I’m also loving Cava and Bellini. The overall feel is this palette is so fall. Thanks again for your hard work and congrats on your 10 year mark.
Thank you! 🙂
Christine, I have to say you rock! I’ve seen other blogs review this same palette but yours is so detailed. I like how you give just the facts and don’t add in your own personal opinions but you rate the product itself. I know you’ve heard that before, but i really appreciate it. You’re my go to source for reviews. 🙂
Thank you so much, Mary! I am honored to be your go-to!
The swatches of the shimmers look great to me, the mattes not much, and they are half of the colors in the palette. I am torn, I liked the idea of this palette and have not decided whether to give it a go.
Have you tried LORAC’s eyeshadows before, Betty?
Great Review! You put A LOT of work in your reviews! Thank you!
Thanks, Michelle!
Bless you for getting this monster handled by release! I ended up getting it because of your swatches and review – – I love it! I only have two other eyeshadow palettes, one being BH Foil and the other TheBalm Nude Tude (which I haven’t used in about a year), so I had a lot of room for expansion! My favorite part is that it’s like two different palettes combined with the equal number of matte and shimmer shades, both of which I was really lacking. I really enjoy the formula and how easy they are to blend – – much nicer than TheBalm and most Mac shadows I’ve tried. Definitely worth it for me vs a lot of the smaller palettes that seemed limiting in one way or another.
Glad I could help, Laura!:)
I hope you enjoy the palette for awhile!
Hi Christine, thank you for doing the review so quick .I need some advice to choose between tarte tartelette Amazonian clay pallet and lorac mega pro 3 which one you think you would pick .the formula of tarte is also very powder or chalky and most the shades look same.help me out
I would go for the Mega Pro 3!
Thanks you solved my problem;-)
if i already have the naked 3, modern renaissance and chocolate bar do i still need this? this is so tempting tho i think i already have most of the shades
You can definitely skip!
Does anyone know if this palette is already sold out? I tried to buy it yesterday and then today but it show as no longer available on ulta’s website. The site desn’t show it as sold out but in the search it appears the massage as product no longer available.
It’s sold out online!
This is my first Lorac eyeshadow palette! I love the colour selection, how blendable the matte shadows are but for some reason shimmer shades fade away from my eyelid/crease quicker than I would’ve expected. I use my Nyx eyeshadow base (in white) as always (I have oily lids). Usually Nyx eyeshadow base makes any eyeshadow I use more vibrant and it stays on longer. Not the case with these Lorac ones. Am I doing something wrong?
This is,by far, the best review of an eye palette that I’ve ever seen. The most detailed along with photos of everything! I just wanted to say kudos and thank you to you, Christine! I wish all palettes were reviewed this way. So helpful!
Thank you, Robin!
Hi Christine. I love the mauves in this palette. This was such a great review that i wanted to buy it but sadly it’s not available in ulta anymore. Would you know i can still buy this? Or do you other recommendations of palette that have pretty mauves like this one?
I saw some sellers at ebay but I’m not sure if they are authentic.
I’m super late on this palette and am having trouble finding it on any site. Is it still available for purchase? Was it permanent or not? Thanks in advance for your help.
It was limited edition!
