Too Faced x NikkieTutorials The Power of Makeup Palette

Too Faced x NikkieTutorials The Power of Makeup Palette ($56.00 for ) contains a slew of products for the eyes and cheeks. It’s a decent palette, but the eyeshadows have room for improvement, as they are not consistent. They also need to be applied over a primer in order to have decent or better pigmentation, to last at least eight hours, and for blending as some of the shades are drier and tended to sheer out when applied. Without primer, they have a more faded appearance and most of the shades lasted six to seven hours. I think the brand should have included their Glitter Insurance, instead of their standard Eyeshadow Primer (but worth reiterating is that Too Faced touts their eyeshadows as highly pigmented and long-wearing as a formula), because three of the eyeshadows, plus the glitter, absolutely need an adhesive base or else it is a one-way ticket to Fallout City.

As a lot of readers have noted in the initial launch post, the palette looks a lot like every other holiday palette Too Faced has released. I struggled a bit myself trying to pair the shades together, as it didn’t feel as cohesive as you might have expected, and the drier, more crumbly textures of the metallic shades didn’t blend well with the thinner matte shades. The two blushes and bronzers are permanent shades, though Justify My Love is a much darker, brighter, and cooler-toned shade in the palette than my single (by a lot). The highlighter, Champagne Truffle, is actually an eyeshadow from another palette, so you might have that already in your stash.

Ivy is a pale, muted white with a matte finish. It had a very smooth, finely-milled consistency with some excess powder that would kick up in the pan. It is chalky against my skin tone, for reference, and I tried to mix it with Painkiller to make it a workable brow bone highlight on my skin tone. On fairer skin tones, it should work better. It lasted six hours on me before disappearing. KVD Beauty Skull (LE, ) is brighter (95% similar). Sephora Swan Song (DC, $10.00) is warmer (95% similar). Urban Decay Bump (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Viseart Cool Matte #1 (PiP, ) is more muted (95% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Three's a Party #1 (DC, $2.29) is warmer (95% similar). Sugar Coated is a light pink with warmer undertones paired with a frosted finish and silver sparkle. It had good pigmentation, though the texture was drier and tended to sheer out on its own. The glittery bits blended away from the base color, so this shade would need an adhesive base to perform well. The color lasted seven hours before creasing and had fallout. Too Faced Pink Frosting (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Dior Garden Pastels #3 (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Tarina Tarantino Violet Storm #2 (DC, ) is brighter (95% similar). Frosted Yum is a muted, light silver with neutral-to-warm undertones and a metallic, sparkly finish. The glitter of this one also separated away from the base color, so it didn’t stay where it was initially applied and resulted in fall out over time. The base color was mostly opaque and wore well for seven and a half hours before creasing. The dryness of the powder made it harder to blend with the matte shades in the palette. Buxom Pure Platinum (P, $12.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Moira Treasure Trove (P, $8.50) is more shimmery, cooler (95% similar). Wet 'n' Wild The Night's Quad #4 (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Sugarpill Grand Tiara (P, $13.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Irresistible is a sparkling, medium gold with warm, yellow undertones and a metallic finish. Like the previous three shades, the glitter doesn’t stick to the base, which resulted in the sparkles transferring beyond the base color and would fall below the lid over time. I would highly recommend a glitter primer or an adhesive base to work with this palette. This shade lasted for six and a half hours before creasing. Pat McGrath Antique Gold 002 (LE, $25.00) is warmer (90% similar). Chanel Eclaire (P, $29.50) is less shimmery (90% similar). Jouer Skinny Dip (LE, ) is darker (90% similar). Painkiller is a muted, medium brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a very soft, finely-milled consistency that applied well to bare skin, but it did not work well with the more shimmery shades in the palette as it was too thin and dusty, so it did not layer well. This shade started to fade after seven and a half hours of wear. Too Faced Chocaholic (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Cobblestone (LE, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). Makeup & Chill is a deep, reddish brown with a matte finish. Though the powder was silky and soft, it was also powdery in the pan, so it kicked up a lot of powder in the pan with even a soft touch of a brush. It applied well to bare skin with full, opaque coverage that wore well for seven and a half hours–it’s just a shade you have to use carefully to avoid initial fall out. Ciate Queen Bee (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Persona Brave (PiP, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Anastasia Violeta (LE, $12.00) is lighter (90% similar). Mystic Hour is a deep bluish-teal with a frosted finish. This shade had a lot of potential, but it fades immediately after applying–it just doesn’t retain that depth and intensity it has in the pan on the lid. Even over Too Faced’s primer, it was still underwhelming; I would try using it wet and over a glitter primer as the drier, frosted consistency would likely benefit from both changes. This shade started to crease after seven hours of wear. Make Up For Ever ME230 Peacock Blue (DC, $21.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Sydney Grace Splendor (P, $8.00) is lighter (95% similar). Wham Bam is a bright, medium-dark purple with warmer, pink undertones and a soft, pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly drier texture that blended out fairly well and didn’t seem to fade immediately like Mystic Hour did. The color wore well for seven hours on me. Urban Decay Gravity (Wired) (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). Coloured Raine Fetish (DC, $6.99) is darker (95% similar). BH Cosmetics Foil Eyes 2 #26 (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Wanted is a deep black with a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a firmer texture, which made it harder to get color out of but also seemed to impede blending, as it applied unevenly and was difficult to pull and diffuse from wherever the powder initially landed. The color had noticeable fading after six and a half hours of wear. Anastasia Night Sky (P, $12.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Nehru (Guo Pei) (LE, $17.00) is darker (95% similar). I Will Always Love You is a bright, medium coral with warm undertones and a soft, golden shimmer. You can find my original review for the formula and shade here for a more detailed look at claims and the like. Suffice to say, this wore a lot like the permanent version I have, but it appeared to be a bit less shimmery and had stronger pink tones while wearing the same (eight and a half hours but way short of the 16-hour wear claimed). Justify My Love is a bright, bold, cotton candy pink with a satiny finish. It is much, much brighter and darker with stronger blue undertones than the permanent version (read my original review here). It is also more pigmented, so that’s an upside, with a slightly looser consistency. The color wore well for nine hours, a half hour longer than the permanent version did for me. Chocolate Soleil is a muted, medium-dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. The powder was firmly packed into the pan, which made it difficult to work with as I struggled to chip away at it to get any color coverage. For swatching alone, I had to scrape away the top layer to get enough pigment to show up on my arm. I had to do the same to apply it to my face. It was unexpected, as Too Faced includes this shade in palettes regularly, and it’s typically quite soft and silky. The color lasted for eight hours on me. Champagne Truffle is a light, pinky-white with a golden sheen. It had semi-sheer color coverage that was buildable to mostly opaque pigmentation. It seemed less pigmented than the previous palette version (where it was released as an eyeshadow). The color lasted for seven and a half hours before separating on my cheeks. Black is a deep black with cool undertones and a satiny sheen. The Sketch Marker formula is supposed to be a long-wearing, waterproof, and vivid liquid eyeliner. It was very pigmented with a smooth, fluid consistency that applied easily and did not seem too watery nor did it apply unevenly. The tip had enough flex that you could maneuver around the curves of the eyelid without issue. The formula takes a bit of time to dry down and set, so if using on the upper lash line, I’d keep my eye shut for about 20 seconds after applying if you can. It did not bleed when I tested it under water. It lasted for eight hours on me. Bobbi Brown Really Black (LE, $24.00)(100% similar). Urban Decay Perversion (P, $20.00) is cooler (95% similar). Glitterally appears as a light silver glitter that reflects pink, blue, and gold as it catches the light. It is a loose glitter, so it has virtually no claims on its own. It is a product that needs to be used with something else–adhesive, mixed with gloss, etc. in order to adhere and wear for any length of time. If you apply it on bare skin, it will just dust away. None of that is a criticism, and as there’s not much to rate it on, you will not find this one rated.

Err, really unimpressive. To me, the eye colors here seems a little disjointed too, but maybe it’s a good range for someone with a small collection? What I do love is the name of the glitter – even though I hate loose glitter. Glitterally… that just makes me smile 🙂

Christine Avatar

I feel like it’s almost two separate palettes that have been joined but lack a few shades that would give you the overlap in terms of cohesiveness/color schemes. You can definitely pair everything together, but it is less obvious than the average palette, I’d say 🙂

Michelle Avatar

This palette is beautiful. I love the look you made with it too. I don’t buy palettes as I feel so much gets left unused seeing I am so cool toned. I make my own. I like this one for my daughter who is on the neutral side. I see a Christmas gift idea perhaps. You did not rate this very high. Do you think Nars palettes are better? Or what do you recommend as an all in one palette?

Jessi M Avatar

The main reason I purchased the palette ultimately was the fact the blushes had more product than their full size counter parts. Everything else was a bonus.

Neonails Avatar

Yeah, I am so happy I waited on purchasing this until I saw your review, Christine! Something told me it would be getting a more middling review, and I already have a TF holiday palette from 2 years ago that I don’t use nearly enough.

I think I’ll be saving my cash for that new LE Masquerade palette from Juvia’s Place that has been blowing up Instagram lately… that or the summer sale CP is running on their soon to be discontinued shades.

Neonails Avatar

I had no idea until very recently that the palettes were targeted towards POC! It makes sense, though, looking back at the color schemes. I’m ultra pale, so for me the unique color selection/awesome pigmentation is a bonus, but I think it’s really cool that indie brands are looking to fill in the gaps left behind from major brands.

Emily Avatar

I’m underwhelmed with the palette, but I think its really cool Nikkie got to do the colab. I think I’m not as interested because I already have both of the blushes and similar colors. I think some one new to make up would enjoy these though. I imagine that’s what its geared towards anyway.

I look and must be missing it. What’s on your lips? I may need that! so pretty. I love the eye look you created.

You always are able to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Nice look. This is going to appeal to fangirls. Hope they get some good looks. There are no obvious easy combos besides a fairly decent crease shade, a lid color, and a browbone. I find it non-cohesive, fiddly, and finicky. Even the Jen Fabulous palette from Ulta hangs together better than this one. Wonder if Nikkie is secretly disappointed? Despite having no interest, I am overtly disappointed. tf is carving out a not so hot niche. You can predict what the palettes will be like..and as was mentioned, their singles and duos were pretty decent. So little variation. In a rut. So many better choices, no matter what you like.

Nancy T Avatar

This palette is just so haphazardly put together color scheme wise, that I was already fairly set that I wouldn’t be getting it, but having read the review I’m dead-set not getting it. Which is okay, since I already own some pretty perfect palettes where the teals, metallics and everything else come together nicely and work at a much higher level of quality, too.

Katherine T. Avatar

I think their target customer is younger girls who are just getting into makeup, so it accounts for the fun, glittery colors and pigment, but they should’ve done a much better job with quality ( why the C’s and F’s??), done easier-to-wear color combos, and lowered the price. $ 56 is totally ridiculous for this kind of quality and target customer, and you will need to pull shades from other palettes to complete a look. For that kind of price, I can think of many other palettes that are better in quality and easier for beginners to use.

Nika99 Avatar

I held out on getting this because I have had issues with Too Faced shadows before and I already have the 2 blushes and eyeliner.I love Nikkie she is an extremely talented makeup artist. She said they worked on this for a very long time so I figured the shadow quality and the bronzer would have been way better.I totally agree with you Christine that they should have included the Glitter Insurance it just would have made more sense.I was contemplating checking it out in person on September 1st and seeing if that sways me towards getting it.But I probably won’t be purchasing this.

Sophia Avatar

When I saw sugarcoated, frosted yum, and irresistible, I thought they looked super gritty and patchy, and like they would have trouble adhering to the skin. I find that kind of strange because shimmery silvers and golds are not typically difficult colors to formulate…also, really weird about chocolate soleil. :/

Lorrin Avatar

I fell for the hype with the Vegas Nay palette and ended up selling it; I think it’s safe to say I dodged a bullet with this one. As others have mentioned, Too Faced’s eyeshadow color scheme is just getting boring and redundant. I like the look of the blushes but I can just buy those separately. This is an easy pass for me. Thanks for your review!

Anime Avatar

I never realized how many unpleasant rest stops there are on the Temptalia beauty review journey:

Crease City? Fallout City? Send me the postcard, ’cause I don’t wanna visit! LOL

What a shame. I have been waiting for a palette enticing enough for me to give Too Faced eyeshadows a try but it seems like all these recent palette releases have been absolute letdowns. I have my eye on the KVD Metal palette that is coming soon but if it has the same flimsy quality as Serpentina and Nikkie’s POM palette, I might just do without.

Mo Merrell Avatar

Unimpressive as expected. You made a mountain out of that mole hill for sure but I am just not feeling it. So random and a bit too teeny boppy girly of a package for me.

Mariella Avatar

Yeah, it’s like Irresistible=Shiny Happy or Don’t Settle; Wham Bam=Live It Up; Makeup&Chill=Knockout; Sugar Coated=Paper Roses and so on (those are all from TF Everything Nice from 2 years ago, I think.

Heidi Avatar

Thank you for the great review. I wasn’t interested in this for myself, but I have a younger cousin just getting into makeup that i think this would be perfect for.

You created some amazing looks with this palette.

I’m also glad that Nikkie got a colab. It’s great to see that happening.

Melanie Avatar

I’m very inspired by your makeup look! Gorgeous with those earrings. I don’t love dry, hard-to-blend shades so I might pass on this one. Thank you for the detailed review!

LaMaitresse Avatar

The eye look is really smart, I like it. It’s a funny little palette, definitely skews younger, and the score was what I expected. I do love the Too Faced Natural Matte palette, I don’t completely dislike the line, I just wish they would put out less and focus on what they do very well, and perhaps move away a bit from the obviously cuteness overload on the branding, some of the formulas are so good that they deserve a cleaner, more elegant container/brand identity.

Genevieve Avatar

I think Too Faced wanted this palette to be a one size fits all kind of thing – it has a bit of everything – mattes, shimmer, glitter plus a range of random colours. The trouble is that the palette doesn’t really suit any particular skin tone. And the shades are poorly pigmented and just not up to scratch. An easy miss for many.

Beautiful eye look Christine and your lip gloss is gorgeous.

Claire L Avatar

I love the colours of Mystic Hour and Wham Bam but glad I’ve a dupe for one of them, such a shame the palette didn’t perform better or have a more cohesive array of colours. I do love the eye look you created, it’s fun and pretty.

Bonnie Avatar

I loved the bright fun colors at first, but now I’m So glad I didn’t buy this just because of the hype machine. Now that the hype has died down and the reviews are in, I’m totally over it. Money saved! Thanks Christine!

TravelingBlush Avatar

I think context helps a lot when judging palettes. Sometimes I wonder that you go on and on about some backgrounds (even when there is lack thereof, at least according to the brand) and mention nothing when in fact it is key info for the collection.

MissJae1908 Avatar

Yeah, I’m not a fan of this palette. I knew that I wouldn’t be when I saw the promo pics. I totally agree with you that it’s not that cohesive. I love me some Nikkie, but I feel like she just took all of her favorite colors and threw them in a palette without thinking about how they would work together. If I need to pull colors from a single shadow or another palette, that’s not my type of palette now-a-days. There are too many palettes out there (or ones that I can create) that will give me everything that I need for a complete look.

Christine Avatar

It’s interesting that Too Faced is actually billing it as “everything you need to create endless looks,” which suggests cohesiveness, but it seems that many are in agreement that it isn’t the most connected set of shades.

I find that I’m willing to pull out a palette of say, all jewel-tones or bright mattes, to work with other products, but if it’s more of an array of shades, I’ll tend to want to use them together vs. adding in other things. I’m OK with adding in a go-to brow/transition kind of shade, though.

Shirley Avatar

I will not be purchasing this palette. The colors do not seem cohesive ( as many others have noticed) nor do they seem good for people with darker skin. Also, I feel like the whole Power of Make up theme is lost with this palette. The original video was inspiring and uplifting however, I find the names of the shadows and the packaging to have nothing to do with that video stood for ( ahem painkiller? Wambam?) . This kind of seems like what it is … A Money Grab..
