Too Faced The Chocolate Shop Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Too Faced The Chocolate Shop Eyeshadow Palette
Too Faced The Chocolate Shop Eyeshadow Palette ($58.00 for 1.41 oz.) includes 21 eyeshadows, one highlighter, one bronzer, one blush, one eyeshadow primer, one liquid lipstick, and a deluxe-sized mascara. You might have guessed by this point that this palette was underwhelming, both because it’s taken me this long to review and based on recent reviews on Too Faced’s holiday palettes. It is, indeed, another miss by the brand.
Dessert’s On Me is a very light white with warmer undertones and a frosted shimmer. It had good pigmentation, but the consistency was thin and dusty, which resulted in it sheering out easily while the shimmer pulled away from the base color. It wore well for six hours. Indulge is a light, golden pewter with warmer undertones and a metallic finish. This had some glitter, which did not seem to stick around for long, while the rest of the consistency had an almost wet-like feel to it and felt smooth to the touch. It blended out fairly well and had semi-opaque coverage. On me, it started to fade after seven hours of wear. Hourglass Graphite #5 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). Lancome Joie (PiP, $19.00) is darker (95% similar). Cle de Peau Serenity (Right) (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). LORAC French Toast (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Cookie Dough is a light brown with warm undertones and gold sparkle over a matte finish. The sparkle did not bind with the base color, and the texture of the base ridiculously powdery, even though it felt silky and finely-milled. This was hard to apply to bare skin, and even over primer, it was hard to build up and keep in place. It wore for five hours. Tarte View from the Taupe (LE, ) is darker (90% similar). Sugared Raisin is a light-medium mauve with warm undertones and flecks of copper sparkle over a more metallic finish. Too Faced seems to release a shade like this at least once a year, and they all look nearly the same–it just seems to show how important themes and names are compared to quality. The consistency was looser in the pan, which resulted in a lot of fall out during application as well as during wear. It started to crease on me after six hours. Too Faced The Strip (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Estee Lauder Aubergine Dream #1 (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). Urban Decay Provocateur (LE, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). Guilt-Free is a light-medium gray-leaning taupe with a matte finish. It had good pigmentation, but the texture was so soft that it turned powdery and looser, so it had a tendency to sheer and dust away as it was blended. If used over a primer, it was better, though all of the issues were not fully resolved. It lasted for six hours on me. NARS Namibia (DC, $25.00) is lighter (95% similar). Jingle Berry is a bright, medium-dark purple with warm, pink undertones and a pearly sheen. It was mostly opaque applied on bare skin, but it was buildable over a primer. The consistency was thinner and dusty, which is why I think it did not perform as well. On me, it started to fade after seven hours of wear. MAC Violet Impact (LE, $17.00) is cooler (95% similar). Huckleberry is a deep, blackened purple with flecks of purple and pink sparkle. Inner Light is a light, peachy-pink with a strong, golden frost. Chocolate Soleil is a medium brown with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. I have so many versions of Chocolate Soleil, and I’m always surprised the brand can’t seem to make them consistent. Chocolate Covered Strawberry is a bright, medium pink with cool, bluish undertones and a pearly sheen. It lasted for eight hours before fading. Urban Decay Naked on the Run Blush (-, ) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Too Faced Jingle All the Way Blush (LE, ) is brighter (90% similar). Wow, this is even worse than I thought. I wasn’t planning on getting it anyway but hopefully those who want this get to see your review before they purchase. This is really just so sad.
It was a disappointing palette!
EVEN if this one had gotten an A+, it is ruined for me. Sodium Saccharin! This being indiscriminately added to most of their eyeshadow palettes of recent years has utterly turned me OFF to this brand. Very irresponsible on their part to do so without any allergy warning anywhere on the box. Makes me now *wish* that I would have pursued some legal action 3 years ago when that stuff gradually turned my eyes into a blood-red, burning, itchy, sore mess. I didn’t, because I honestly believed that with others having the same complaint, TF would do the RESPONSIBLE thing, and either substitute that ingredient or place an ALLERGY warning on all such future products. Sorry for my rant, Christine, but this really burns me up!
I don’t know why we are scenting eye products still. And some of Tarte’s palettes smell like vanilla – I do not recall if they have saccharin in them? Do you remember?
Tarte has been using 2 components from vanilla, one of which is a skin smoother, but I don’t believe they have put any saccharin or other sweetener in them. Or at least I haven’t read it in the ingredients list so far. It’s very worrisome, this trend. Especially now that so many more people have significant allergic reactions.
Looks like Tarte uses various vanilla ingredients but seems like a derivative of vanilla vs. sweetener. Tarte does have their ingredient lists on their site, which is FAR NICER so one can ctrl+F.
BTW, Nancy, (off topic for tf or this item) GA Luminous Silk foundation also has Benzyl salicylate, the known immune disrupter that unfortunately is in the MUFE water based. Another off the swatch list. That ingredient is probably more insidious than something that gives you a flat out immediate allergy. Still not sure what’s in Smashbox primer water that sets me on fire, esp eyelids. Is saccharine in all/most chocolate/vanilla scented prods? You wouldn’t think they would have to add something that TASTES sweet to make it SMELL sweet.
Wow, I wasn’t even looking for benzyl salicylate in products! But perhaps we all should. Idk what could be doing a number on you in the Smashbox Water Primer, though? I’ve never used that one. As for saccharin in chocolate and other food scented makeup, I’ve only seen it in these TF palettes and bronzers, plus a few lip balms. The reaction to lip balm with it as an ingredient hasn’t been as severe, but will affect just inside my mouth. I see NO reason for this to be an ingredient in cosmetics!
It sickens me too. Like it isn’t bad enough I have to avoid it in drinks, candy, gum, other food, & lip products, but now I have to watch for face & eye. What purpose can scent & fake sugars possibly serve around the delicate sensitive eye area? I highly doubt it is good for anyone’s eyes, whether sensitive to the ingredient or not. I just wanted to say, you’re not alone with your annoyance on this one.
This is one of the reasons I’m over TF. Why do you feel the need to add fragrance to your eyeshadows? Do you really think I spend my day smelling my eyeballs? The eyes and the area around them is sensitive enough, there’s really no reason to add ingredients that could cause issues.
Anyway, this palette is just another disappoinment, but I got used to mediocre quality from TF’ s latest launches.
Sad to see such a mediocre review for this palette. I remember when I’d get SO excited for Too Faced’s Holiday Palettes. Even though the packaging was really not my style (I prefer things a bit more elegant looking), I still couldn’t help getting excited. And they offered such great value – things like a full sized Shadow Insurance, etc. – along with great shadows and blushes and just SO MUCH stuff (who doesn’t like SO MUCH stuff????). So it makes me sad that this is such a poor performer. I think the last TF item I purchased was the Chocolate Bon Bons Palette and there’s been nothing much else from them that has grabbed my attention.
I feel like they are going overboard with attention to packaging/themes and making things appear “cute,” rather than delivering a solid, quality product that’s interesting/speaks to their audience.
That’s the thing though, Christine…I sometimes wonder who they feel their “audience” is. Some of the “cutesy” packaging is quite cute; some is just so juvenile and puts me in mind of the play makeup stuff for 8 year olds when I was a kid. I have a palette from years back – Enchanted Glamourland, which is /was a really good, solid palette but the pull out drawer that holds the eyeshadows is so impractical and difficult to use and then put back in place. It was a really cute palette – a bit over the top but for Xmas it was still really nice. And the shadows were amazing, as was the value.
The funny thing about Too Faced’s holiday packaging (and Tarte’s, too) is that presentation is detailed but impractical. It would be hard to display/store unless you only had one or two things your stash, IMO. As another reader mentioned, too, why would you want holiday-themed graphics year-round?
Well this was disappointing..
It surely was!
So much nope… I’ll have to look at dupes for Mint Chip though.
I know! So sad.
Yeah, everybody already weighed in with the right comments. All the work put into cutesy and lots of product that (only) looks good in the pan. Lots of these would fool you. And they usually have no testers, just a bunch of shrink wrapped ones on end caps or freestanding impulse displays. Many which are gifted will never be returned…who wants to say that a gift sucked, esp to the giver. I don’t even want to read these, and I devour Christine’s every word. I take your approach. If I like it in the pan or swatch, I check the dupes. The rest: so much dust on the floor. I do believe these are outsourced, which brings up a whole ‘nother bag of concerns. This is a brand that I have WAY outgrown.
bareMinerals The Wild Thing has a blue that is a perfect dupe for Mint Chip and the rest of the quad (minus the yellow) is pretty good too.
Already returned mine to Sephora along with the Tarte big set and the Too faced house thing. The girl asked me why and I said because the quality sucks this year! And I am a die hard Too Faced fan. Never returned any of the products I have bought from them, even the holiday palettes.
Glad you were able to return it, at least, Debbie! 🙁
Wow what a disappointing snorefest from Too Faced. I am on a Fb makeup group and some of them have been disappointed in this palette. All style and no substance, I think it’ll come back to bite TF on the bum in the end when people stop buying the palettes because of the mediocre quality. There are a few good shadows here but the overall poor quality means it’d be a frustrating palette to work with. I mean, I can see that Cookie Dough is a light coloured shadow but not so that it’s literally barely there! It almost makes me laugh.
It’s like MAC. MAC holiday palettes used to be pretty good – they were exactly what you wanted: more for less and pretty good/close to quality you’d expect. Then they took a downward turn, and it got worse, and who talks about those, eh? I don’t see people getting hyped up over MAC holiday eyeshadow palettes any more.
Idly curious… at what point does a Sephora or Ulta choose to add or release a brand from their stores. I don’t know enough about the business to guess, but I’d have to think that if a brand consistently produces sub-par products, with so many interesting and consistently well performing brands out there possibly in search of brick and mortar shelves, sometimes changes happen? The question strikes me upon this, that is yet another poor holiday release as one of several such across a range of brands.
I wonder what % is bought to give to others, so then many won’t be used until later and then I’m sure some feel guilty exchanging/returning a gift!
Yep, I swatched this in store, was pretty bad. But thanks for reviewing because now I can go through the dupes list and find the shades that do perform!
Yay!
One thing I find…and I’ll bet a lot of your readers do, as well….is that we already have dupes, BETTER dupes already in stash, thanks to your guidance.
At least there’s that 😉 I don’t know they can do one matte shade great and then blow it on another – and both browns.
This is even worse than some of the mass produced MAC palettes! Not only nearly all the matte shades really poor, but there seems to be triplicates of quite a few of the paler shades.
The only message that will make Too Faced understand that customers don’t like their poor quality products, despite the glitzy packaging, is when people stop buying their products.
Beautiful eye and face looks Christine.
There are some pretty colors in there, but it’s a shame the quality isn’t really there.
I cannot help but resent the youtubers who gushed about this. Thanks for being honest, Christine.
At least there were some Bs in the grades 🙂 I do like some of the shades, but I’m not gotin to buy anything from Too Faced this holiday. Feels rather good having one brand off the lists of wants.
Not going, sometimes I do not understand my typos. the keys aren’t even close! Sorry for being such a sloppy typist! I just typed sloppy as: slpooy! I need help! 🙂
