Kat Von D MetalMatte Eyeshadow Palette
Kat Von D MetalMatte Eyeshadow Palette

Kat Von D MetalMatte Eyeshadow Palette ($60.00 for 1.32 oz.) includes 22 eyeshadows in a slim–but mega-sized–cardboard palette. There are nine Metal Crush eyeshadows (each is 0.06 oz.) and 13 matte Eyeshadows (each is 0.06 oz.). I really liked that they included the Metal Crush formula into their holiday palette–most obviously because I think the formula is amazing–but it distinguishes the shimmery shades in this palette from a generic shimmer eyeshadow formula. The palette offers versatility in undertones, finishes, and overall richness as a lot of the matte eyeshadows can be used to tamp down the brightness of some of the shimmery shades. The only thing that I think felt excessive is the size; it is the largest palette I’ve come across–it measured 11.5″ across!

Worth noting is the stellar lettering job; the palette reads matte/metal depending on the direction (it flips), which I thought it was a very nice touch. The palette is also a tremendous value, even if accounting for the value of the matte eyeshadows is harder (there are no singles available), the value of the Metal Crush eyeshadows alone is almost double the price of the whole palette. I also think that regardless of a price-per-ounce valuation, $60 is a fair price given it is a mid-end brand and has 22 eyeshadows.

Overall, I was impressed by the quality, pigmentation, and application of the palette–mattes are very difficult to use without primer, so the fact that I could use the majority of them without tearing my hair out was exciting. It also has some more unique shades, some shades we’ve seen but not relentlessly, and then some workhorse shades that will help bring the palette together. It will also play nicely with other palettes and eyeshadows that you may have in your stash, too. It’s also a great way to play and try the Metal Crush formula without paying $21 a pop.

Ignite is a light-medium bluish aqua with subtle, warmer overtones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation, but the consistency was noticeably chunkier and had a denser feel–it had to really be pressed and pushed into the skin to apply smoothly, so it wasn’t as blendable or as easy to use as the other Metal Crush eyeshadows in the range. The color started to crease faintly after eight hours of wear. NARS Deep End (LE, $29.00) is cooler (95% similar). Tarte Dream (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). Tinsel is a sparkling, light-medium pewter gold with warmer undertones and a glitter finish. As you might expect, the glitter resulted in a looser, slightly chunkier texture and was the culprit of some fall out over time. For as glittery as it was, though, I think it held on and applied well, and the underlying base color was very pigmented, which helped it look better on the lid over time. It wore for nine hours with some fall out. Clarins Jade #1 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty TFX1 (LE, $36.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Volt is a medium, plummy purple with warmer, brown undertones and cooler, silvery shimmer. It had rich color payoff with a smooth, lightly blendable texture that was soft but creamy, so it applied well to bare skin and retained its intensity when blended. Synergy is a medium-dark, golden brown with warm, orange and brown undertones and a subtle, metallic sheen. It was richly pigmented with a very smooth, dense, and creamy consistency that was easy to work with. The color applied smoothly and blended out well on bare skin. This shade wore well for nine hours on me (a little longer than it did as a single). This shade is the only repromote, as it is part of the permanent range. Flash is a bright, medium-dark gold with strong, warm undertones–very orangey–and a soft, pearly shimmer finish. The color payoff was good, but the texture was slightly thinner and drier to the touch compared to other Metal Crush shades in the palette. It still applied well, and I didn’t have any real issues working with it, but I noticed some of the shimmer pulled away from the base when I tried to blend it while the color didn’t move as much. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading on me. Makeup Geek Gold Digger (DC, $6.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Milani Bella Gold (22) (P, $4.49) is more shimmery (95% similar). Velour is a bright, medium-dark blue with strong, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage, though not fully opaque, that was buildable on the lid. Stone is a muted, medium-dark gray with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. The color payoff was decent to good, and I felt like it was buildable to mostly opaque color on the lid, but you would need a primer to get you there, as the dustier, thinner texture made it more prone to sheering out on bare skin. The color blended out without a lot of work but required extra effort compared to really great matte formulas. I noticed fading after seven and a half hours of wear. It blended out easily but still retained its depth and opacity where it was needed. This shade wore for eight hours on me. Sephora Wild Island (347) (P, $9.00) is warmer (95% similar). Coloured Raine Jungle (LE, $6.99) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Mo Bamba (PiP, $4.50) is more shimmery (95% similar). Sydney Grace Evergreen (P, $5.25) is cooler (90% similar). Ribbon is a muted, dark purple with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a powdery texture that was finely-milled but harder to use, as it sheered out easily and was hard to layer. I would use this one with a primer, as it was much improved over one when I tried it. Without it, it’s a color that would be better suited for crease work or to darken/mute other shades. The eyeshadow started to fade after seven and a half hours. Smashbox Orchid (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Huda Beauty Vortex (PiP, ) is more muted (90% similar). Give Me Glow Punk (PiP, $7.00) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Lover In Me (LE, $17.00) is cooler (90% similar). Give Me Glow Blackened Plum (P, $7.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Silk is a medium-dark, purple-mauve with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was very good, but the texture was dustier and a bit thin, so it sheered out very easily on the skin and was hard to keep it opaque without a good primer underneath. It showed signs of fading after seven and a half hours of wear. Sydney Grace Labyrinth (LE, $5.25) is darker, warmer (95% similar). Viseart Grenache (PiP, ) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Jouer Aubergine (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Violet Satine #3 (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (90% similar). Too Faced Wrap It Up (LE, $16.00) is lighter (90% similar). Fringe is a light-medium peach with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage paired with a lightly dusty texture that blended out easily. This shade seemed to have a stronger white base to it, so it might look chalky on some skin tones. The color wore well for seven and a half hours on me. Coloured Raine Cloudy (LE, $6.99) is lighter (95% similar). Clarins Fairy Tale #2 (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). Natasha Denona First (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). Feather is a soft, light-medium yellow with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The color payoff was mostly opaque, but it had such a powdery, dusty texture that it sheered out so easily that I could not get it to look true-to-pan at all. Regular primer was not enough to help it bind and stay together, so I’d recommend using it with a lightly tacky or creamy base. MAC Memories of Space (P, $17.00) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). Sydney Grace Lemon Cream (P, $5.25) is brighter, warmer (90% similar). KVD Beauty Sylvia (LE, ) is warmer (90% similar). Wet 'n' Wild A Regular at the Factory #1 (DC, $2.29) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Makeup Geek Potential (P, $9.00) is darker (90% similar). Oak is a medium-dark, olive brown with soft, warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was a touch firmer in the pan, but it wasn’t actually firm or difficult to get the product out of it. It had intense, opaque color payoff, and the powder applied well to bare skin. It blended out with just a little extra effort required, but it wore for eight and a half hours, which made it one of the better-wearing matte eyeshadows in the palette. Too Faced Night Fever (LE, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). Tarte Dreamer (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). Pat McGrath Depth (PiP, $25.00) is darker, cooler (95% similar). Suede is a darker beige-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a lightly dusty, but was blendable, consistency that sheered out a bit when applied to bare skin. It wore well for seven and a half hours before fading on me. MAC Fab Accent (LE, $17.00) is lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Jingle All the Way Eyeshadow #11 (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Bone is a very light, brighter beige with a semi-matte finish. This one seemed to be more satin-like in finish, though it was still rather flat/matte on the skin unless really buffed out. The texture was silky to the touch, smooth, and blendable, but it was soft enough to kick up excess powder in the pan and fall out during application if I wasn’t careful. This is the one shade that I think could have been replaced with another shade, as there is already a very light (white) shade in the palette. This shade started to fade after seven and a half hours on me. ColourPop Center Stage (LE, $4.50) is cooler (95% similar). KKW Beauty Decade (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Glaze (LE, $16.00) is more muted (95% similar). Urban Decay Good Karma (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). Viseart Petit Pro #1 (LE, ) is warmer (95% similar). Velvet is a muted, dark burgundy with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, while the consistency was more powdery and had a tendency to apply unevenly on bare skin. The color blended fine over a primer, but it was harder to diffuse and blend out on bare skin as it would stick to one area and not want to budge. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Too Faced Charming (LE, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). NARS Indes Galantes (Right) (DC, $25.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). LORAC Eggplant (LE, $19.00) is cooler (90% similar). Thanks Christine! Your review was the only thing I was waiting for… *skips off to Sephora*. I’ve been so bored with the neutral matte palettes, so this is perfect to my mind. Some very wearable (yet fun!) colours and tons of options for a reasonable price.

Miss M Avatar

I could not be more excited to read this review; my palette arrives today! So glad it received such high marks and I absolutely love your eye looks, particularly the pink/purple one. I am going to try to duplicate it tomorrow! As always, thanks so much for the timely and thorough review!!! 🙂

kjh Avatar

Indeed! But you are always a winner. Not only are your reviews everything the world touts you for, but your looks are always TDF. Really like the ‘you can drab it down aspect,’ in case it’s too sparkly. (Looking at you, Bridal Satin, top row, by daylight, anyway.). Always talked myself out of kvd holiday. Not this year. ELL set and this, F’shirr, in calspeak.

Celia Avatar

It’s MUCH better than Serpentina. And there are certainly some comparable shades between the two (especially Ribbon in M/M vs. Venom in Serpentina. Ribbon is like a functional version of that color. I couldn’t possibly wear Venom without primer and base [heavy on both with MAC P+P and Painterly both] but Ribbon I can and have). It’s far better.

Christina D. Avatar

I’m pretty pleased with this palette although I was surprised at the length of the palette! The colors and quality are very good, and as much as I prefer mattes, the metals here are really nice additions to my ever-growing collection.

Someone who wishes she had the vida loca palette Avatar

Nice but I’ll pass. I’m over eyeshadow palettes for now I think. I’m sticking to buying singles until I’m wowed.

Katherine T. Avatar

I’ve been playing with this for days, and this is now my top fave palette for colorful eye looks! I’m SO impressed with this palette–it is one-of-a kind in terms of colors, quality, and value. I wasn’t too impressed with her Shade and Light quads (thought many of the mattes were dry and dusty), and Serpentina was an over hyped disaster, but KVD has totally redeemed and outdone herself with MetalMatte !! 22 shadows, including some of the hardest colors on earth to get right (matte black /blue /gray /purple /green /rose ) and not a single D/F, and the shimmers are a dream to work with. Interestingly, I had no trouble with Velvet — mine is very pigmented and smooth, even without primer. I have FINALLY found the colorful mattes needed to pair with UD Spectrum, and maybe UD Full Spectrum. And in terms of value, this palette is a no brainer, you would go broke buying these as individual singles. Sephora says this is “ultra limited”, not sure if it’s just hype, but get it before it’s gone! BTW, Christine, there’s a typo –the palette has 13 mattes (not 11), but fantastic job getting this review out in the middle of the holiday crush 🙂

Mary D Avatar

Thanks so much for the swatches, Christine, but this may be a pass for me. At least half of the colors just won’t look good on my skin tone, so….no. 🙁

Anime Avatar

This was one of those purchases where I couldn’t wait for your review. I had to purchase it the second it hit the shelves! Your review is absolutely so dead-on it almost gave me chills! I was worried because there have been a ton of mixed reviews across the board for this palette but it performs SO well for me and I love it so much. I don’t buy holiday releases or palettes often, so this may be something I actually get a back-up of, ESPECIALLY considering the insane value of the palette. I was comparing the value to that of a normal Sugarpill shadow (.012 oz for $12-14) and this palette is a STEAL!!!

Christine Avatar

It’s quite good! The mattes are not perfect, but it is pretty rare to find mattes that perform perfectly on bare skin – any dustier/more powdery formula (typically mattes!) needs a smoother surface to cling to, in my experience. I was frankly surprised that they applied as well as they did!

Lizzy Avatar

I really want this palette but I’m kind of hung up on the fact that every shade has talc in it. I know the metal crush shadows do but I didn’t think Kat’s original formula did. Even with a B+ rating my eyes are sensitive to talc and I’m so surprised it’s in every color in this palette this time around. 🙁 Now I’m even more sad I skipped out on Serpentina, haha.

After taking a look at my collection (and your swatch comparison tool!), I have dupes for 12 of the shades… 🙁 Not sure I can justify it, even though I love the metal crush formula. Most of the ones I don’t have dupes for are mattes so I guess I’ll just have to swatch in store to see if the quality is worth it. So glad to finally read your review!

Yay, glad to see this got a good review! I was really impressed with her holiday palette last year, and I’m happy I waited to see what she would be bringing out this year before pulling the trigger on any other holiday palettes. I think this will be my big splurge for Christmas, because I’ve always wanted to try some of the Metal Crush shades.

The value of this palette is phenomenal, and I think it’ll play really well with the Mi Vida Loca Remix!

I’m so dazed from all the holiday releases, am keeping now a list of “maybe’s” to come back to in a couple of weeks. This is what holiday releases should be — fresh approach, some sparkle and brightness, and quality. So it goes on my ‘maybe’ list.

This looks beautiful and I really want it, but its TOO BIG! I do my makeup on the go and there is no way this will fit in my makeup bag. 🙁 Since I wont get much use out of it I will have to pass.

WOW that lettering job is so sick! now I’m almost tempted to get this just for the lettering…I’m (mostly) joking but I love the artistic vision and creativity in this palette – very unique in a sea of generic holiday products and packaging. I kinda want to encourage KVD and other brands to make more palettes along these lines instead of just coasting along, so if I wasn’t seriously considering getting this before I am now! (personally I wish there was a red shade or two, that’d make it perfect!)

You and I have talked about this before now, but seriously every time I use it I am amazed by the size again and again haha. It makes all my other bulky palettes seem so small, even though it’s often far thinner. The first thing I did was line it up next to one of my headshots lol. I also love the “Metal”/”Matte” font. It’s brilliant that she included such clever tattoo-inspired art. My friends love turning it upside down to watch the change.

I’ve tested it on five different skin tones now (NC-45, NW-35, NC-25, NW-05, NC-15) and it worked very well on everyone which was great. Except Linen of course which didn’t work out as well on shades post -25 (not surprising). Tested with and without primer. Primer is of course a good thing and I would recommend it, but it’s great to know that if you’re going super fast and skip primer the shades will work. Super impressed that the mattes worked as well as they did without primer for me. Plus I love the shade range. Very clever in that it’s easy to mix shades to create a perfect hue (for example, Suede with some Oak as a transition shade on some of my darker testers).

I did have a bit better luck in testing Ribbon, Velvet, and Velour than you did so my grade came out A- in the end. Definitely recommended! The size is a bit crazy, but at least the thinness helps mitigate that. Very workable as an all-in-one palette or for pairing with others (lots of fun options with the now discontinued Electric Palette by UD especially). The pricing works out extremely fair. Overall very pleased with it.

I’m really disappointed that the purples in recent KvD palettes aren’t very good (actually horrendous in the Serpentina palette) and that there isn’t a metallic red in this palette. The size of KvD palettes in general are a bit too big, so I’m glad you mentioned that in your review!

Lara Avatar

I’ve never tried anything from KVD as it’s not easily accessible in Ireland but this palette has me drooling. Would you say it’s a good first-item to try from her?

Laura Avatar

I desperately wish these were two separate palettes ’cause I would buy just the metal side instantly! My vanity space is so small that this palette literally wouldn’t fit 🙁

I’m still tempted thought, because the value is phenomenal. If the packaging wasn’t so pretty I would be tempted to depot it into two smaller z-palettes 🙂

Mariella Avatar

I very much love the idea of this – sort of like a Lorac palette on acid, in that the mattes are separate from the shimmers/glitters and, of course, the colours are just crazy (in the best way) but this is so much more eyeshadow than I need (“need” being, of course, relative) and, as you point out, it’s pretty large which is awkward for me to use in my little space. I so like that the colour names are by the shadows. I’m guessing this is LE (so that when I crumble in my will to resist, I have to crumble sooner rather than later, right? TBH, I’m really waiting to see the review for the ABH/Mario palette. Modern Renaissance was a total no-go for me so I’m hoping Mario (sorry but am I the only one who keeps seeing the fat little guy from the computer game?) will be a winner.

Christine Avatar

Haha! That is a good way to describe it. It has some more unique shades in it, and since the colors are little muted overall, they are easier to incorporate into different types of looks.

I don’t know what the price of the Metal Crushes in Canadian, but maybe there’s still value there?

Mariella Avatar

The singles are $25 so, absolutely, there is really good value and, of course, the variety of colours is the clincher! I may still break down and get this, if only for the shades Synergy (for which I’ve an obscene # of dupes but, you know how it is…), Tinsel, Ignite and Watt. Oh yeah – Oak and Volt too. With the exception of Volt and Tinsel, though, I really have a lot of dupes for these other shades but it always comes back to “but having them ALL in one place would be SOOOO nice!”

Tanya Avatar

I just received mine in the mail, as your review posted. I’m so happy that it performed well, I’m looking forward to playing with it tonight. I had a feeling that this palette would be a success, based on the fact that Serpentina was a disaster. Kat would not make the same mistake twice.

Reka Avatar

I’m glad this performed so well (and is made in USA), I just wish it wasn’t so damn tasteful! It looks like I’ll need to try the singles in Metal Crush to get the gaudy colors I crave. Thank you so much for the dupe lists, it makes it far easier to resist.

What a mammoth review Christine – how fantastic are you?
This is probably the most original palette to come out for some time – a mixed palette of shimmers and mattes that are colour co-ordinated. It is probably the most versatile palette we have seen for awhile. Lots of colours and neutrals as well. I really like the design too – the shimmers in circles and the mattes in rectangles.
The quality is pretty good too. Only a few C’s, but mostly A’s and B’s. A genuine effort has been made by Kat Von D to improve the quality of the mattes – which is most hard to do and a lot of brands fail miserably on this.
Stunning eye looks Christine that show the versatility of the palette.

I was waiting for your review on this one specifically. However, I also recently saw swatches on the new UD spectrum palette, now I am stuck between the two. I might have to wait until you review the UD palette then decide, then I keep thinking KVD will be out of stock by then. So many decisions! 😀

Samantha Avatar

I bought this palette after viewing the swatches. I cannot wait to use it everyday. It is really like a daily splurge. It works beautifully with an eye primer. It was a great purchase with so many possible looks. I am very pleased.

KK Avatar

Thanks so much for the review Christine! I was seriously contemplating this – your review really puts it in perspective for me!

I hope you will be reviewing the LE Studded kiss lipsticks too – I’m literally waiting for your review before placing my order!! Honestly, me and my friend have been stalking your site since the last one week – 10 days for it!!

Beautiful colors. I might NEED these more than I Need UD full spectrum(like I need a hole in my head) They are gorgeous. Really. Worry. Worry. I must see in real life. I think Im in love.

Risa Avatar

I bought this palette the second it went on sale, and once I got it, I couldn’t stop using it! I’ve used it every day since, and I love it. I’m sure one day the novelty will wear off and I’ll go back to the others… one day…

The metals paired with the Smith 253 lay down brush are insane, too! Very, very compatible. I use primer every day, as it is, so I’ve yet to encounter any problems with application. Overall, this may just be one of my top three palettes of all time!

Just… not ideal for travel since it’s SO FREAKIN’ BIG. I’ll stick to my Viseart Theory Cashmere palette for that. Lol

Asche Avatar

I feel like I’m the only person who doesn’t like this palette. :S I love KVD and was so excited for this release, until I saw the shades. My biggest issue is the colours, particularly with the matte shades. Why are there two shades that are basically white? The blue isn’t my cup of tea, the last thing I need is another black, and I would never use that yellow. Apparently I don’t like colourful mattes. I do like colour in my shimmery eyeshadows, but I don’t think I would use any of these shades often. Am I really going to rock a vibrant blue or lilac purple eyeshadow on a daily basis? No.

Super disappointed because I thought this would be *the* item on my Christmas wishlist…but I don’t want it at all. Oh well.

I have been following you for years Christine. I always use your site to research what make-up I want to purchase and what make-up to pass on. I wanted to say that you are awesome and your make-up application gets better and better. You have perfected your blending technique.
You are my go to every time a new palette hits the market or my favorite line has a new launch of make-up.
Thank you for all that you do.
Thank you for sharing Mellon with us as well.
Now, let me just say that this palette is a wonderful addition to my Kat Von D collection. It is bigger than I expected but the colors can be everyday or made to pop depending on my mood. The value is crazy especially after I spent over a hundred on her individual metal colors. No regrets though.

Tina Avatar

This is months later, but we have just received Kat Von D in the UK and the Metal Matte has just arrived a few days ago (online only as of yet). I have been loving shimmers, especially after the overdose of neutral mattes we have been fed with over the last year.

I was craving the Natasha Denona eyeshadows but the price is prohibitive. The price of this palette (even though so much more affordable -£50 here-) almost stopped me until I saw your review, Christine! I have now ordered it and it’s on its way to me and I can’t wait. Thank you so much for your amazing work! Your eye looks are to die for.

This is one of my top two favorite pallettes! (The other is my Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons pallette). Your reviews are always so on point, thanks!
