Kat Von D Holiday 2016 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick Mini Set Review, Photos, Swatches
Kat Von D Holiday 2016 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick Mini Set
Kat Von D Holiday 2016 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick Mini Set ($49.00 for 0.80 fl. oz.) includes eight miniature sized shades of liquid lipstick. The Everlasting Liquid Lipstick formula is supposed to be long-wearing, have full coverage, and be ultra-matte. In my experience, most shades are pigmented, apply well, and wear all day long. Some shades are slightly drying to moderately drying, but they tend to fade evenly and are one of the most comfortable liquid lipstick formulas I’ve come across.
Six of the shades are from the existing, permanent shade line-up, while two (Plath and Roxy) are new. I had trouble applying two shades–Roxy and Echo–as they were sheerer, more watery, and ended up patchy and uneven on the lips. L.U.V. seemed a bit drier, almost powder-like, in its finish compared to the permanent version. I’m not sold on the set overall, but if you tend to like liquid lipsticks (or in particular, Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks) and take awhile to finish shades, I think these are sized right that you get enough product for many uses but will be able to finish them, too.
Value
- Full-size: $20.00 for 0.22 fl. oz. or $90.91/oz.
- Set: $49.00 for 0.80 fl. oz.
- Total Value: $72.73
Lovesick is a muted, medium mauve pink with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage with a smooth, even application. The color lasted for over six hours, but it was a touch drying after six hours. Anastasia Sweet Pea (P, $18.00) is lighter (95% similar). Mother is a medium-dark pink with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It was very nearly opaque in a single layer, and the color spread evenly across the lips and did not turn patchy or uneven. The color didn’t emphasize my lip lines or “crack” when I smiled, as the formula felt flexible on but still transfer-proof. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me and was slightly drying overall. KVD Beauty Mother (DC, $21.00) is darker, more muted, cooler (95% similar). ColourPop Thirsty (LE, $7.00) is glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Brain Freeze (DC, $5.00) is lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Thomas (P, $36.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). Revlon In Charge (P, $12.39) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Plath is a dark, reddish brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It was richly pigmented and covered the lips with opaque, even coverage. The texture was less flexible to me after it had dried down, and it seemed prone to emphasizing the natural texture of my lips. The color lasted for almost eight hours and was drying after six hours of wear. ColourPop Love Bug (DC, $6.50) is more muted (85% similar). Milani Crush (LE, $8.99) is warmer (95% similar). Charlotte Tilbury So 90s (was Birkin Brown) (P, $37.00) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop And Chill (DC, $6.50) is darker (85% similar). ColourPop Kae (LE, $6.50) is darker, warmer (80% similar). KVD Beauty Vampira (P, $20.00) is darker (85% similar). ColourPop Chilly Chili (LE, $6.50) is more muted, cooler (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Backstage Bambi is a bright, medium-dark fuchsia pink with cool, blue undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage and felt more watery when I was applying it. The color had some visible streaking, even after it dried (it didn’t self-level) and seemed a bit more matte than the permanent version I have. It wore well for six hours but faded somewhat unevenly and was a bit drying. MAC Flamboyish (LE, $19.00) is lighter, glossier (95% similar). MAC Both Cheeks (LE, $19.00) is brighter, warmer, glossier (90% similar). Bite Beauty Satsuma (LE, $24.00) is glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Buds (LE, $6.50) is lighter (95% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Santa Sangre is a bold, bright, medium orange-red with warm undertones and a matte finish. It was very nearly opaque in one layer (a second dab would definitely finish it off) that applied easily with smooth, even coverage. The consistency dried down and didn’t enhance lips but didn’t emphasize the natural texture either. On me, the color wore well for over seven hours and was just a touch drying after four and a half hours of wear. MAC Reddy to Go (P, $20.00) is cooler, glossier (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Rei of Light (212) (P, $30.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Temper (DC, $22.00) is lighter (90% similar). NARS Golshan (P, $25.00) is glossier (95% similar). KVD Beauty Chula (DC, $21.00) is lighter, brighter, glossier (90% similar). KVD Beauty Project Chimps (LE, $20.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). NARS Just Push Play (P, $26.00) is darker (85% similar). NARS Codie (LE, $34.00) is cooler, glossier (85% similar). Maybelline Siren in Scarlet (P, $7.99) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop TGIF (LE, $7.00) is darker (90% similar). Bite Beauty Candied Maple (LE, $24.00) is lighter, brighter, glossier (85% similar). NARS Joyous Red (DC, $28.00) is lighter (85% similar). KVD Beauty Nosferatu (P, $20.00) is darker (85% similar). ColourPop Poison (P, $7.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
L.U.V. is a bright, medium-dark purple with a matte finish and warmer, pink undertones. The color payoff was semi-opaque, but it was even, and it had a very dry, more powder-like matte finish. It did not seem as flexible or as forgiving as the permanent version to me, ase this one “cracked” slightly. It lasted for seven hours but faded unevenly starting from the center of the mouth and was moderately drying over time. ColourPop Drive In (LE, $6.50) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande 2 (LE, $19.00) is lighter, glossier (95% similar). KVD Beauty L.U.V. (DC, $21.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Bite Beauty #098 (P, $18.00) is more muted, glossier (90% similar). Buxom Ultraviolet (P, $22.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Invite Intrigue (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Seductive Intent (LE, $19.00) is glossier (90% similar). MAC Heroine (P, $19.00) is darker, glossier (95% similar). KVD Beauty K-Dub (P, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Anastasia Vintage (P, $20.00) is darker (85% similar). Urban Decay Bittersweet (DC, $18.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). MAC RiRi Boy (LE, $19.00) is lighter (85% similar). Bite Beauty #007 (LE, $36.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). Maybelline Vibrant Violet (P, $7.99) is more muted, glossier (90% similar). Tarte Surfer Girl (P, $22.00) is lighter, glossier (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Roxy is a bold, dark purple with cool, blue undertones and matte finish. It was semi-sheer, moderately buildable up to medium coverage (two layers), and it had a thinner, more watery consistency. This thinness made it prone to applying unevenly and streaky. The more layers I tried, the worse it look, as it would be pigmented in places and still sheer in others. It lasted for seven hours, but it had a splotchy fade going on as the areas that it was sheerer faded away more noticeably first. My lips started to feel dry after four hours of wear. KVD Beauty Roxy (P, $18.00) is brighter (95% similar). KVD Beauty Roxy (P, $19.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). Fenty Beauty Violet Fury (P, $18.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Be-dazzled (LE, $6.50) is brighter (90% similar). KVD Beauty Roxy (LE, $21.00) is lighter, glossier (85% similar). Makeup Geek Electric Slide (LE, $12.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Anastasia Violet (LE, $20.00) is lighter, more muted (85% similar). MAC Lust Extract (LE, $19.00) is darker, glossier (80% similar). Melt Cosmetics Mariachi (P, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (80% similar). Illamasqua ESP (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (80% similar). MAC Matte Royal (LE, $19.00) is cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Echo is a deep, muted navy blue with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff paired with a thinner texture that was prone to patchiness, though it didn’t seem as streaky as other thin shades. I also felt like it was a bit more pigmented and easier to apply than the permanent version, though they both were shades I struggled to apply overall. The color lasted for seven hours and was somewhat uneven in how it faded over time. It was drying after four and a half hours of wear. KVD Beauty Poe (P, $18.00) is more muted, cooler (90% similar). MAC Matte Royal (LE, $19.00) is brighter, cooler, glossier (85% similar). ColourPop Climax (P, $6.00) is lighter, brighter, cooler (85% similar). Too Faced Who's Zoomin' Who (P, $21.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Urban Decay Heroine (DC, $18.00) is glossier (90% similar). Anastasia Cobalt (P, $18.00) is lighter, glossier (85% similar). Maybelline Midnight Blue (DC, $7.49) is more shimmery, darker, glossier (85% similar). Sephora Violet Vertigo (103) (P, $14.00) is brighter (80% similar). Bite Beauty #054 (P, $18.00) is more shimmery, darker, more muted (80% similar). Illamasqua Disciple (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, more muted (80% similar). Illamasqua Disciple (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, more muted (80% similar). KVD Beauty Bruno (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Too bad about the purples, maybe a lip liner would help, but this could be a nice option for those who like a variety of colors and can’t finish a full size.
It was SO disappointing 🙁
Roxy is such a beautiful color, it’s a shame it performs so poorly 🙁
Can I say how happy it makes me to see how many dupes there are now for Echo? Just a couple years ago that wouldn’t have been the case! it warms my heart to see unconventional lip colors catch on.
I know!! I feel the same way about Echo and other shades like it. Yellow still needs some friends, though 😉
HMMM I thought the purple and blue would perform better. The pinks are too bright for me 🙁 and with the underperforming blue and purple theres no point for me to get this one. I was thinking about it so thanks for saving me from making a return trip.
No problem, Mo! Echo wasn’t great when it was released into the permanent range, but I had higher hopes for Roxy 🙁
Almost bought this on impulse when I first saw it on Sephora. Glad I waited for your review, doesn’t seem worth it with many of the colors I’m interested in underperforming and too many pinks for my taste. Definitely reaffirmed my need for Santa Sangre though. And I’d be interested in Plath as well if it were made available separately.
They made it sound like Plath/Roxy were coming, but it wasn’t 100% clear. Sephora has, “including an exclusive preview of just-released shades, Plath and Roxy” in the description on their site – makes it kind of seem like they are going to be released? But like I said, unclear!
Definitely go and get the full size Santa Sangre – it is a favorite of mine!
I want this. I love the all the colors. It’s a shame Roxy is so streaky. I’d have to layer it over a lip pencil.
You definitely would need a liner with it!
Yeah…. ROXY is very sheer formula which is a shame but I still found I could build it up without going too thick. and Echo still needs the same TLC as the full size. 😉
Good to know. Thank you!
Thanks for the review, Christine! This has been in my cart since it came out, but there are only a couple of colors that ended up looking like they would work for me. I’ve been really excited about this formula since I got a deluxe sample of Lolita II. I think I’m better off buying two or three full sizes in colors I know I would wear! The Metal Matte palette, on the other hand—your review for that one made me click the order button 😉
No problem, Jaime! 🙂
Yes, I’d say that it’s better to buy shades you’d wear vs. a set that is just a better “value” so-to-speak. There’s more value in a shade you’d use, wear, and finish!
I had a lot of trouble trying to make the outlines of the purple and blue ones to look even
Same here!
The formula isn’t for me 🙁
Totally understand that!
When I saw that first photo I said to myself, well, I thought, “this I must have!”
Now, after reading the review, I can just say, Thank you Christine of saving money for me! Echo and Roxy was the star colours for me, along with Santa Sangre and I can buy that anytime.
Happy to help ya, Helene!
I love the idea of this set, but it only took one look at the swatches to realize that I would never wear them. I find the Bite Lip Lab too drying to wear in practice and that is just ‘neither drying nor hydrating’!
Oooh, stay away from these – most find liquid lipsticks at least a bit drying, lol!
Kat Von D in requiem was my first “luxury” makeup purchase, so I have a soft spot in my heart for the brand. But I’m not super impressed with the new colors or the texture lately. I’m satisfied by seeing your reviews instead of running to sephora to test now. 🙁
I had higher hopes for Roxy, but I guess I should have been more concerned given Echo wasn’t great before!
Thought I would like these more than I do. Disappointed. Forgot whether the newbies would be perm or not. Plath is fine. No surprise in that, given my preferences. And it would save me from Birkin Brown…. For navy, I’d go maybelline, though squid ink is so marvelously complex…just would not get enough use to go higher end. Santa Sangre is great, but way overduped in stash. One of the best aspects of mini sets is the ability to access small sizes of less usual shades, but the purples underperform. The pinks look less wearable, swatched, for me, than I thought. I’m out. Money saved. Now the kvd shadows are a very different kettle of fish. Ordering tomorrow. I’ll deceive myself into thinking that metal/matte is 49$ less, by not getting these. Love inane rationalizations. If I put the thought into ‘deep things’ that I put into m/u, i’d be brilliant. I did explain to a coworker today that her problem with purple liners was prob carmine allergy and sent her a list of the culprit ingredients. So, overthinking this stuff isn’t all bad!
Here’s hoping that your coworker can figure out why purple eyeliners are a problem!
I wanted these to be better, because it’s a decent set, but I’m just not enthused when you have a shade as bad as Roxy in the set.
Overall I am very pleased with this set. I feel like Roxy was a big letdown for me as a standalone shade (mainly because I was SO SO excited for that gorgeous slightly blue toned purple) but even the shades that don’t perform well alone seem to do very well as support/ombre shades and all the colors play together nicely, which is an expectation I tend to carry for a brand product line. The shades that perform well perform VERY well, and the ones that don’t, at least, work well with those that do. Definitely worth the price tag considering there are more hits than misses and the misses aren’t terribly severe. (besides Roxy — man I had high hopes for her!!) Santa Sangre is my favorite shade on you, Christine — it looks like such a gorgeous bright tomato red!
Happy to hear it works well for layering/ombre lip looks. At least Roxy was more comfortable than ColourPop’s version, which was the closest dupe 🙁
I would have been severely disappointed if the quality wasn’t there — I understand if it’s streaky or whatever (not really, actually — Roxy was terribly patchy) but if it was REALLY bad (cracking/flaking off the lips, etc) I would have returned the set. That’s what I meant really: that generally speaking, the formula isn’t bad — maybe just the pigmentation isn’t as opaque as I would have dreamed.
Mother is a stunning shade ! Too bad that it feels drying on the lips:(
🙁 ‘Tis the way of liquid lipsticks usually!
I’m not buying anymore liquid lipsticks. I notice I only wear the ones I have occasionally. And I always end up applying a gloss over them because they are so drying. They do last a long time though.
I understand, Denise! I am the same way – I only reach for a liquid lipstick that’s drying if I need 100% long-wearing color that is almost no maintenance.
I was so excited when this came out. I bought it immediately. I was so disappointed with the patchiness of roxy and echo. The pinks and red are too bright for me. I love Plath and the lightest pink, but 2 minis aren’t worth $50 so I returned it. I’m thinking of getting the Sephora favorites most coveted Trending set.
Me too, Shan! Roxy was so hard to use!
Whilst I love the brownie shade, I think they would end up making your lips feel dry. They certainly don’t look very comfortable on you Christine – I feel sorry for your lips.
They are definitely drying over time!
I don’t think any of these are for me. The finish just isn’t my thing, and neither are the colors, really.
Money saved!
I really want to try out this formula but these examples aren’t doing it for me. I’ll probably just choose one or two full-size shades I know I’ll wear. As a side note, I really like your eye makeup in these shots ☺️
Thank you, Laura!
Plath is the star of the show for me. I hope they sell it separately.
I hope so, too!
I’m always intrigued by the ‘liquid lipstick’ concept. Isn’t that just another description of lip gloss? Seriously, though, what’s the difference?
It will depend on the brand, as liquid lipstick can come in various forms, finishes, consistencies, etc.
I find that with Roxy and Echo I have to apply initially a thin layer to outline my lips then go in and pat pat pat a heavier amount on, not swiping, not closing my lips until it dries. It’s kind of a pain, but I get a really nice, flawless smooth look without the patchiness!! Trying to teach myself to not close my lips prematurely was quite difficult, but I find gently blowing out air onto my lips to speed the drying process keeps my lips occupied. 😀
This stuff is incredible. I picked one up for the first time yesterday, in the shade Santa Sangre. Gave it a test run by wearing it for a couple of hours and then sleeping on it. Woke up the next morning and it hadn’t budged (and I sleep on my stomach!) Non-drying, and that’s coming from a girl with some of the driest lips this side of the Equator. Gorgeous shade of red for my extremely pale, natural redhead skin (not overpowering in the least). This will be a daily wear for me. Way to go Kat von D!
Absolutely fantastic review. I always appreciate a breakdown of cost per oz/ml. These colours look beautiful on you btw.
Thanks, this review was so helpful! I have a few questions, though… how many one-layer applications of lipstick would you estimate are in each tube? And about how tall are the tubes? Thanks in advance 🙂
I have no idea, sorry!
