Tarte Tarteist PRO Palette
Tarte Tarteist PRO Palette

Tarte Tarteist PRO Palette ($53.00 for 0.70 oz.) includes 20 eyeshadows with 16 shades that are matte and 4 that are shimmery. The matte eyeshadows felt smoother and a little denser with less powderiness/dustiness compared to the Tartelette palettes, but they are still rather soft and have slight dustiness overall. The shimmery eyeshadows were soft, smooth, and denser, but they did not seel as velvety or as dense compared to the Metallics Shadow range (and the ingredient lists seemed different). I think the palette is pretty good, particularly if you normally use an eyeshadow primer, as the mattes all really benefit from it in minor ways that make them much easier to use and longer-wearing.

Classic is a light beige with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff with a soft, silky consistency that was just a touch powdery. Smoked is a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was more powdery with this shade, so it was more prone to sheering out and having excess product on the brush–I highly recommend tapping off prior to applying and even consider applying in sheerer layers. It had good color payoff and was fairly blendable on the lid. It wore well for eight hours. Colour Pop Roundhouse (DC, $4.50) is cooler (95% similar). Colour Pop Prism (LE, $4.50) is cooler (95% similar). MAC How You Thrill Me (LE, $17.00) is warmer (95% similar). Hourglass Dark Cocoa (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Ethereal is a rich, golden copper with warm, brown undertones and a metallic finish. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, almost cream-like consistency that wasn’t too thick or dense, so it did not accentuate my lid’s natural texture. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours on me. bareMinerals Cognac (PiP, ) is cooler (90% similar). Tarte Twinkle Lights (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Too Faced Bonjour (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Viseart Cashmere (PiP, ) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Anastasia Golden Copper (P, $12.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Vintage is a very light, pinkish white with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage with a lightly dusty, silky-smooth consistency that was blendable but sheered out to a moderate degree without a primer. Fierce is a muted, dark purple-taupe with cooler undertones and a matte finish. This shade had a dustier texture, which sheered out really easily, so it was hard to maintain the pigmentation level that it seemed to have initially. The color was fairly blendable on the lid, though, and lasted for seven hours. YSL Paris #10 (LE, ) is darker, warmer (90% similar). bareMinerals Center Stage (PiP, ) is darker (90% similar). No Filter is a muted, dark reddish plum with warm undertones and a matte finish. Vamp is a blackened purple with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. The texture was smooth to the touch, but there was a clumpiness to it where the powder seemed to stick together in places, so it took more maneuvering to smooth and blend out the color. With the depth of the shade itself, it was hard to apply it without it looking patchy. The eyeshadow was slightly better over a primer but blended better with the assistance of other, lighter mattes in the palette. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me. Stila Eggplant (LE, $18.00) is lighter, more muted (95% similar). Colour Pop Chopper (LE, $4.50) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Tarte Evening Affair (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). Glam is a light-medium gold with warm, rosy undertones and a slight shift to pink paired with a metallic finish. The duochrome is subtle, and I did not notice it on the eye at all–it just looked like gold on. I could detect the shift on my arm, if I maneuvered my arm just right. The texture of this shade was a little firmer than the other shimmery shades, though it was not difficult to use. It had mostly opaque pigmentation and lasted for eight hours on me. Mod is a muted, medium-dark red with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. This shade was rather powdery, but luckily, it did not sheer out too much, which I suppose was a testament to the pigmentation of the eyeshadow. Edgy is a dark chocolaty brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a powdery consistency, so it was prone to sheering out and not adhering as well to bare skin–it was another shade that needed a good primer underneath to perform well. I could use it to build up color in the crease or to darken an area, as I did not need opaque coverage for that, and it blended out fairly well in that instance. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Natasha Denona Earth (102CM) (PiP, ) is warmer (95% similar). Sephora #tbt (DC, $10.00) is more muted, warmer (95% similar). Punk is a deep black with cool undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was pretty good with a fairly soft, blendable texture, though it could have been more forgiving to diffuse around the edges, as they could sometimes look dry (depended on the texture of my lid that day). It started to fade after eight hours of wear. LORAC Jet Black (LE, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). NARS Pandora II (PiP, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Trendy is a deep, reddish brown with a cooler, teal metallic shimmer/shift on top. The texture was drier, particularly on the first few layers, as it seemed to soften somewhat over time, but it tended to have a ragged edge when applied and needed some extra attention to diffuse and blend out. It wore well for eight hours on me. Makeup Geek Secret Garden (P, $6.00) is lighter (90% similar). Kat Von D Vestment (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Storm Cloud (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery, brighter (90% similar). Colour Pop Mermaid Boy (PiP, $4.50) is lighter (90% similar). We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! I have been waiting for a palette exactly like this and nearly lost it when this was released, but I wanted to hold off on making a decision until I saw your review. I couldn’t take the wait anymore and bit the bullet yesterday and ordered it… knew this would get posted right after haha! Glad to see it scored mostly well!! I don’t have many matte shadows and have been trying to find the perfect palette of matte shades and this was exactly what I had been wanting. Plus the 200 bonus points at Ulta this week + it being my birth month and getting 2x points helps justify the purchase too. Was hoping it’d get an A but a B isn’t much to complain about (especially because I always use a primer). Can’t wait to play around with it!

I saw this on Ulta but held off. It’s a pretty good palette for Tarte, but I feel they can do better, and I have most of the colors duped. But I do like how they laid out the color combos, this palette will be easy to grab in morning for complete eye look. Will see if I can swatch in store before making final decision. Thanks for the review!!

I like that they included shimmery shades with the mattes, but I wish they had more like satin and pearl between the two, which helps with cohesion!

Thanks, Christine. This is now an easy return for me. I was more than 90% there anyway given my snit about the insulting crap holiday offering, but this makes it easy. My palette is unused, and it doesn’t look like I’m missing much.

Eye looks and quality shadow offerings are my current pursuit. Now revisiting Burberry, Viseart, Surratt, and KvD MetalMattes to select some new offerings for myself. Swatching party coming up before the Sephora sale. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m sad but not surprised by the 5 matte shade C rating. Mattes can be hard bit 1/4 of the palette being the c range is sad. ๐Ÿ™

I am happy to see more colour matte palettes on the market though as they are hard to get matte formula right more brands avoid them.

The color trendy reminds me of the duo chrome color in the Wet n Wild Comfort Zone palette ! The color selection in this palette is really beautiful but What i hate the most about tarte shadows is that they are powdery ๐Ÿ™

Great swatches Christine. Great review as well. Can you do multiple swatches together so I may see the colors together to compare. TIA for your consideration.

Another palette of mostly-warm-neutrals-with-some-berries (and a pop of black and white) …

This is just not my year for palettes, I guess!

I do think that Glam, Minx, and Trendy are very pretty colors. I certainly could see this palette working well for many people. Just not me.

I ordered this from Tarte shortly after I saw the swatches. I like it quite a bit for a few reasons. 1) I love the colors that they chose. they’re all colors that I use regularly. 2) I prefer matte shadows (most days)and I feel like these all work well with a primer.3) I love that I don’t need any other palettes Makes my life easier and I’m all for that.
Christine do you know when that graveyard girl pallets going to come out I’m really excited about that one! Something is happened with either Tarte or my taste but I really have come around to them honestly . ?

Hmm. I love the color combination, but I am kind of disappointed in the number of C’s. I’ll have to think about this one.

Oh dear, what to do!?! I really love how this is laid out in easy cohesive rows, that with primer will definitely work just fine, and of course, these are all my kind of shades. But that’s the thing, I may have quite a few similar shades. Especially amongst my MAC Pro Pan singles stored in e.l.f. quads. Might *really* be time to get a Z-Palette to stick them in, so that at a glance, I see the entirety of them. Making palettes such as this either an easy “get” or “pass”.
In other words, the jury is still out on this one for me!

This is a gorgeous palette, from the sleek packaging satin/matte black top and gold mirrored bottom and inside, to the colour choices. It’s right up my alley and had I not already gotten the ABH Mod Ren palette AND UD Lounge (which fulfils my love of a red-brown with teal duochrome), I’d definitely consider getting this. A great alternative to the MR if ABH isn’t available in your country.

So far I’m not feeling any of the new palette releases :/ Hoping you’re able to get a sneak peek at the new Too Faced Chocolate Chip and White Chocolate Chip palettes? You’re swatches and reviews are always the best! Thank you for your thoroughness hard work ๐Ÿ™‚

Too Faced doesn’t send me press samples of their palettes, so unfortunately I will only be able to share it once I can purchase it and it arrives to me. I’m so sorry, Joy!

This is probably the best effort Tarte has done for awhile. Looking at the dupes for the purple matte shades, hardly any brand gets them right. However, I think this is a versatile palette with lots of variety and reasonably good ratings across the board and primer can be used to improve those C rating shades.
Thank you for your review Christine – a mammoth effort.

So sad that you rated this palette B. It really deserves a better grade. I got I yesterday and don’t totally share your opinion…I find it really good.

Best Regards

I decided not to get this palette just cause I have a lot of similar shades in my collection already. I think Tarte did a decent job with this palette, but they definitely came up with it too late. I feel like all of Tarte’s previous eyeshadow palettes have all been the same until this one, but unfortunately the market is already filled with a great variety and great quality palettes. If this palette came before the Tartelette palettes, I think this would’ve been a hit.

I completely missed this review due to some seriously hard circumstances I was facing when you posted it (no space for anything else!). But now that I’ve seen this I am torn! I want more matte shades and this palette seems to have everthing that I want, but I promised myself to buy only triple A quality stuff…??. Anyway: so happy this is permanent! Thanks for the in depth review!

This palette looks amazing for my hooded eyes! I can really only wear anything with any amount of shimmer on the tiny part of my visible lid and inner corner. That means palettes (90% of them) are a waste of $$ because I have to supplement them with other mattes. Thanks for the total win, tarte!

Man, can ANYBODY get purple-toned shadows right? I would kill for a palette with great shades in that color family but the swatches are always, always the worst of the pack!

Maybe I’m just way too picky with the quality of my eyeshadows, but every time I want to buy a Tarte eyeshadow palette the swatches I see just don’t live up to my expectations. I feel like Tarte shadows always swatch too powdery or sheer for my taste (most eyeshadows do honestly) and I just can’t make myself spend 50$ on a palette when the quality seems off. ๐Ÿ™
