Tarte Pretty Paintbox Collector’s Makeup Case
Tarte Pretty Paintbox Collector’s Makeup Case ($59.00 for 1.59 oz.) includes 24 eyeshadows, four cheek colors, miniature size Glossy Lip Paint, black liquid eyeliner, and miniature sized mascara. It’s another middling mega set from Tarte-it’s disappointing with some real misses in the palette. There were only a few shades that were actually good. The set itself is contained within a zippered case, but it is pretty bulky for traveling (and storing). The best part about the set were the punny art-inspired names.
Moment is a light-medium peach with warm undertones and a fine, golden shimmer-sheen finish. It had semi-sheer, buildable coverage (up to semi-opaque) with a slightly firm texture in the pan. Unique is a medium-dark brown with warm, yellow undertones and a satin finish. Glitter Glue is a light beige with warm undertones and a glittery finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage, which was not buildabl,e and the texture was looser in the pan, so there was a lot of fall out during application as well as during wear. This one, as the name might allude to, needs a glitter adhesive to function. KVD Beauty Sterling (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). Too Faced All American Girl (PiP, $16.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Diamond Butterfly (LE, $17.00) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). Nudes is a light-medium beige with a mostly matte finish. The texture was incredibly stiff and had such a hard press in the pan that it was difficult to get any color out of it. It was a challenge to apply as so little color showed up, and what did apply, immediately melded to the skin and did not want to blend. It lasted for four and a half hours before it had faded. Urban Decay Nudie (PiP, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Laura Mercier Bone (PiP, $23.00) is more pigmented (95% similar). NARS Madrague #1 (DC, $25.00) is warmer (95% similar). Bronze Casting is a medium-dark copper with warm, orange undertones and flecks of copper sparkle. It had sheer coverage, which I did not find buildable at all, and the sparkle was loose and sat on top of the underlying color, so there was noticeable fall out after six hours of wear. Silhouette is a dark black with neutral-to-cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. There seemed to be a slight sheen to the finish, which kept it from being totally matte. The consistency was a little thinner and firmer, which made it harder to blend out without getting some patchiness. With enough effort, I was able to blend it out, though. It had good pigmentation and lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Chanel Obscur (816) (LE, $36.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). One Too Manet is a medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. Porcelain Dali is a very light pink with neutral-to-warm undertones paired with a matte finish. It was very sheer, due to the incredibly dusty and thin texture. Stained Glass is a deep, reddish plum with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. The texture was rather thin and dusty, so the color had a tendency to sheer out easily, but it was also one that turned patchy as I blended it. I Louvre It is a light-medium mauve with neutral-to-warm undertones and a satin finish. The consistency was so firmly pressed in the pan that it was difficult to get color payoff out of it without digging at it with a metal spatula or the end of my brush (the pointed end). Obvi is a medium, peachy-brown with warm undertones and a fine, white pearl. It had semi-opaque color payoff that applied evenly but some color sat in lip lines, which became more noticeable as time went on. The gloss lasted for three hours, was lightly moisturizing, and comfortable to wear. (I reviewed this previously here and did not retest.)

Oh dear. I remember swatching this in store at the Sephora sneak peek event, and either my swatching was off that day or I must’ve got a better batch. For me, all of the lightest shades (basically the entire left hand column) were a lost cause, while the rest were ok to great, and I liked a number of the medium and darker shades. Since then, I haven’t seen this in store, so haven’t been able to swatch again, but I’ve seen a number of reviews, and looks like it’s been a very mixed bag. Agree the case is very bulky. Hoping the latest Pro Amazonian palette performs better, as the color combos are similar
I feel like it’s a bad sign when reviews on Sephora are anywhere below 4 stars… lol.
Bingo!
Oh, this is sad! Tarte is capable of turning out good quality eyeshadows and blushes, so what gives? Stupid, stupid, stupid!
At least they didn’t come out with a collection of colors that I adore but do a lousy job with them, lol, so I don’t really care personally. This season’s color combination of eyeshadows in warm neutrals + pinks and berries with warm cheek colors is super-unflattering on me. Oh, well, eventually the beauty industry will have to move on to other colors! (I do admit there are a few other offerings… but most palettes seem to be in this color combination this fall/holiday season… )
Glad the color combo made it an easy skip 😉
Not surprised. Hope the pro palette coming in better than that.
Hopefully! Won’t be hard.
I am ready to return the Pro palette unused. I’m so pi$$ed at the crap quality of this release.
I think on my lunch on Wed., I’m just going to go to the big Sephora in downtown Boston and again check out the the Viseart/Burberry/Surratte palette/shadow options. Then order what I want /need during the sale, and call it a day.
After these spate of reviews my plan is to curate a collection of what I want and need, and stop this ridiculous roller coaster of the next shiny object.. It’s been so bad this year, I just want to be done with it all.
Even if the pro palette is great, their trading on the old Tarte rep and name and turning out holiday crap has me turned off completely.
Yeah, makeup sure does make us channel our inner magpie, as Katherine so imaginatively puts it. Have fun at the Pru Sephora. They have lots that do not get space in the burbs.
That score is ouch!
I know! Sad times!
Too bad it turned out to be another mediocre made in China palette. The colours seemed quite nice in the pans. Thanks for all your hard work testing and blogging so we can make more informed decisions.
No problem, Stephanie!
It definitely has a wow effect when you see the whole palette like that, but I gotta say, after seeing the individual swatches I’m not too impressed.
There are a lot of misses in it!
Holiday/Winter 2016 has yet one more loser in the flood of palettes. Wow. It’s almost as if the major players are in a competition to see who can put out the most ill planned, poor quality pieces of junk to push on unsuspecting holiday shoppers! Between this one and UD Full Spectrum, one of them may get 1st prize!
I’m not entirely sure if it’s the disappointing aspect or the breadth of shades that made this one of the last on my list to get out… It’s mostly the latter (overwhelming), but sometimes I know that the swatches were already telling half the story that my review is probably not quite as waited for as some of the more promising palettes!
Definitely makes sense on both counts. I think most of us just knew from those first swatch previews that this palette wasn’t going to review well. Between the poor performing shades and the sheer bulkiness of its packaging, it was another obvious Tarte fail.
So disappointing, when I saw the colours I had such hopes!
Aww! 🙁
Glad I didn’t get it!
Phew!
Granted, there are LOTS of shadows in this palette but I don’t think I’ve EVER seen quite so many D’s and F’s for one palette! So sad – Tarte, what are you doing???? Even if the shadows were all stellar, I’d have a hard time justifying this because not one of those cheek colours is a shade I could wear. Oh, and can I just GRIPE on a totally UNRELATED subject…Went to Sephora on Saturday to get the NARS Give in Take palette (which the website indicated they HAVE) only to be told I can’t buy it because they haven’t had the “official launch” yet. Decided I’m going to skip it when it does launch (‘course, if they’d had it on Saturday, I’d have bought it). Today, I went to get the Estee Edit palette set because, again, the website’s “find in a store near you” feature indicated they had it. AGAIN, sorry – it hasn’t “officially launched” either! GRRRR. I was really in the mood for a Halloween Treat of the cosmetic variety!
How weird that they won’t sell it to you despite it being available online… that makes NO sense!
….but it “hasn’t launched yet”. I would like to launch someone into space…that’s how annoyed I get when someone gets between me and my makeup (but to be fair to the Sephora gals, it’s entirely possible it’s Sephora’s own system and that while it has shipped and is “in transit” and hasn’t been processed, the site still “sees” it as being available at that store “as of the last 3 hours”. GRRR!
LOL, Mariella!!
The last time I went to a Sephora, because it was about 20 minutes away from me, I called TWICE to make sure they REALLY had it in stock and could REALLY sell it to me.
The only workaround I ever found for this was to get someone to get it for you from the back room. Because the items in all likelihood actually are there. The SAs in the little Sephora are usually willing, but the bigger one, no way. I think they list instore availability online by when it ships there. Reaching the sales floor can be a radicallly different story. I was looking for a store brand item that bigger S told me was not there (listed online as available) and little Sephora retrieved from their back room for me FOUR MONTHS before it hit the floor. Now, that is screwed. Usually the SAs are too ‘busy’ or self important to do it. Plus, if the stocking mgr or crew are disorganized, the back room could be the anteroom to Hades….and they could never find it, anyway. I agree that is a major S problem.
They are usually very good about doing this (I’ve purchased quite a few items before they even have the special display holders/gondolas for the products) but this time, they weren’t willing and, with regard to the Estee Edit, the sales assistant and the store manager both seemed pretty sure it wasn’t in and the manager told me that they’ve had people working every day putting out the new displays and new arrivals. With the Holidays coming, clearly it’s an on-going job. What they DID have (and I nearly bought) was that set of the 2 Algenist illuminating drops. I’ve so many similar products but still had a hard time resisting (and I may still buy them yet!)
There are a few real stinkers in here. Hard to tell I Louve It is swatched.
Like Get Surreal and Hot MoMa, but not enough to purchase!
Yeah, that one is close to my skin tone – so sorry about that!
I wonder why they put so many light neutrals in the palette. Pity it performed so badly for all who wanted this one.
It is odd!
Christine, a question about Hot MoMA….it looks gorgeous and your description of it seems pretty positive yet it got a C+ and poor marks for application. But you say it had good pigmentation and was opaque and blendable and wore well. No mention of fall out. I’m curious as to why it got a rating on the low end of the spectrum. As much as I steer clear of reds, I really liked the look of it and wondered why it didn’t score higher based on your written description…
I’m just a colossal idiot and missed putting in the application score. I’m very sorry about that, Mariella!
Hey, no need to apologize – none at all. An oversight like that is easy enough to make. Now, I’m just glad I asked (and of course, I’m wanting that one shadow like CRAY-ZEEEE – time to look for a good dupe; this is a HUGE step for moi!)
I appreciate you asking, since I would have totally missed it otherwise! 🙂
Wow, that is really sad. I can’t believe all the Ds and Fs.
I know! 🙁
Oh dear – the quality is all over the place and many of the shades look very similar to each other – especially the paler ones. This could have been so good.
It really was!
Well, the light shades are the emperor’s new eyeshadows. That’s my compliment to this abysmal offering. The rest of my commentary will not reach any of your delicate ears. It’s too vulgar. If, as a reader suggested, shadows are made to spec in the PRC, why are these so s***worthy? Because they can. (then) These are deliberately lower quality. Form (in pan) and function have no agreement. Holiday palettes should brag ‘Look what we can do! Buy us year round!’ Instead, for folks with any makeup familiarity, they sour us on the brand. Pip pip! Bad show!
There is no one to blame but the brand when something is made and is of poor quality. It is not as if they are made, Tarte never sees it or approves it, especially when China, as a whole, is fighting against the image of China = low quality when it is often the brands that are dictating the quality level (or saying it can only cost X).
A great idea with a beautiful mix of colors but that quality…is embarrassing. I don’t understand how a company could knowingly put something like this out? It’s not like they can’t make good shadows and blushes–they apparently just don’t care enough to?
So many disappointing holiday releases! I don’t have the money to spend on mid-to-high end makeup anymore (except MAC, which I do collect religiously lol) but I guess that’s not so bad after seeing so many of these failures! However if this had been a great quality product, I would’ve asked for it for christmas. I generally like Tarte and I’m building up my eyeshadow collection right now so this would’ve been great for that. For years I’ve been very consistent in my eye looks (neutral brown in the crease, pinky champagne on the lid, and chocolate brown in the outer v–accomplished perfectly by my too faced ‘natural eyes’ palette) but lately I’ve been trying to branch out, especially now that my makeup skills are evolving. This seems like a great mix of colors…it’s just so disappointing that the quality is so horrible.
I don’t know why they put out mega palettes that are disappointing – why not put out a smaller one that’s better?!
