MAC Nutcracker Sweet Collection
MAC Nutcracker Sweet Collection

Here’s a look at the top 50 products reviewed in the month of October, plus a summary of how many products and brands were reviewed and a break out of ratings! 🙂 I figured we better to a top 50 for October because the month was a whopper!

I think it’d be fun to go through what we used, purchased, resisted, and so forth each month, here are some questions:

  1. What were your favorites from the last month?
  2. What didn’t impress you?
  3. Did you return anything you purchase?
  4. Or successfully resist temptation?

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

I think you might have tested and reviewed a record number of products this month, Christine! Thank you 🙂

What were your favorites from the last month? It’s not makeup, but I love my new Dyson hair dryer. Being able to dry my hair until it’s completely dry is awesome. I also really love my Hourglass Curator lash tool, because I can get all my lashes, and the Ascent primer and Realist mascara because I can have smudge-free lashes without a crunchy top coat.

What didn’t impress you? The fact that, when I got the MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation in NW18 that I ordered, it was much darker and more orange than the one I had in NW20, and when I took it back to Nordstrom, the ones in their drawer were even darker — even their NW15 was darker than the NW20, and the MUA was not all that surprised, just said that foundations oxidize! I ended up buying a bottle in NW13 to mix with my NW20 to lighten it up a bit, but if these bottles oxidize on me, I won’t be repurchasing, that’s for sure! I really do like the foundation in terms of application, finish, and wear, the way it makes my skin look, but, like almost all foundations, it’s too peach/not ashy enough to match my skin tone exactly, hence the mixing (I also add a drop of blue pigment from MUFE — I’ve started doing that a lot).

Did you return anything you purchase? Exchanged the NW18 for an NW13.

Or successfully resist temptation? Givenchy Heroic Pink and Cle de Peau Lempicka Red are still on my wish list. As is NARS Impudique 🙂

Thanks, Christine! I was worried because it’s so much money! And I should have ordered directly from Hourglass instead of from Barney’s because of the better return policy, but, since I’m happy with the products, it worked out.

ULTA excluded Dyson from their 20% off coupon, which made made me feel a bit better about not waiting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sephora exclude anything from their 20% off coupon, though, so I still might kick myself a bit. It’s just that it was so nice that my local ULTA actually had it in the store for me to check out and take home with me, plus it’s been super-nice to be able to completely dry my hair, not struggle with shoulder pain while drying, and wear it loose the past couple of weeks. Now if only I hadn’t sprung for the Bio-Ionic with the Sephora coupon last year! Except that I don’t know how I would have made it through school without having at least that.

LOL! I forgot that I returned the Stila liquid lipstick I bought (too drying on me) and also NYX Liquid Suede lipstick in Alien; it turns out actual solid black lipstick is a bit more dark/dramatic on me than I’m ready for, but I love how Foul Mouth looks on me, and Jet Set is cool, too.

1. Mac nutcracker sweet peach face duo & mini nude lipstick set.
2. Every holiday shadow palette I checked out at ulta & sephora. I didn’t get a single one.
3. No returns.
4. I didn’t do too bad, considering how much was released. I resisted the bite sets this year. Otherwise I wasn’t super impressed with a lot of the holiday releases, which is probably why I didn’t spend more.

My favorite purchases of October were Strange New Worlds and Highly Illogical Powders from the MAC Star Trek collection, LLAP (lipstick from MAC Star Trek collection), Bobbi Brown high simmer gloss in Canary, Sephora’s Surfer Babe eyeliner, and Urban Decay’s Moondust shadows in Chem Trail, Stellar, Skywalk and Crux.

I was not impressed with MAC lipstick in Saucy Little Darling. The quality is there, but the color is wrong for my skin tone.

No returns this month.

I resisted the Anastasia Mario palette. I am trying to resist Guerlain’s Rouge Saphir and Givenchy’s Heroic Pink, but both these colors are really calling to me.

I posted a comment on October 29 to the Weekly Roundup but it has not shown up yet. This has happened to me before but only when I respond to the weekly roundup. I wasn’t sure if my comments are somehow not getting through?

1. What were your favorites from the last month? Mac Nutcracker Sweet Peach face duo & the Mini Pink lipstick set; ABH Mario & MR palettes.
A special mention goes to the Clinique Pop Matte Lip Colour + Primer in Cute Pop; gorgeous colour, hydrating and so soft on my lips. I loved it so much that I ordered two more (in Beach Pop and Peony Pop).

2.What didn’t impress you? The MAC Mascara in the Nutcracker Plum eye set.

3.Did you return anything you purchase? No returns.

4.Or successfully resist temptation? I was a bad girl in October :).

What were your favorites from the last month? The Kat Von D Metal Matte palette, Ofra Duo/Trichrome long lasting liquid lipsticks, the Anastasia Modern Renaissance palette, the Autumn Glow bundle from MUG, MUFE artist rouge creme lipstick in C211 and Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick in Stepping Out.
What didn’t impress you? I wasn’t overly impressed with the Dose of Colors Eyescream palette, but maybe that’s because by the time I got it I was already in “autumn make up mode” and that palette is very spring / summer feeling.
Did you return anything you purchase? No returns!
Or successfully resist temptation? Most of the holiday releases so far! I did splurge on the Natasha Denona Star Palette and the KVD Metal Matte palette though. When purchasing, I try to determine if I have something of a similar color in my collection or not, and that usually deters me from spending all of the money, because often times, I have a pretty close dupe!

This was certainly a month to be blown away by some very good quality items! Standouts for me have been: KVD Metal Matte palette (own), MAC’s holiday collection (own 3 items), Nars Velvet Glide’s (Mind Games set on wishlist), and UD Vintage Vault items I’ve already bought are fantastic! Bruise is probably one of my favorite lipsticks I’ve ever owned. Troublemaker is on my wishlist, as is Estee Edit G&G set.
And then there’s Colourpop. Great quality for the most part. A bargain, too. BUT, they are becoming DULLpop! Almost everything looks like just another shuffle of a reddish shade, an orangey shade, a goldish or khaki shade, and a green or dark brown. What happened to their more punchy and unusual shades? They DC’d most of them! Bleh!
NO returns this month!
I successfully talked myself out of getting that MJ face palette last week. Dodging a bullet, it would seem!

What were your favorites from the last month? I’m really enjoying all the new lip launches from the past few weeks/months and I’ve been doing a much bolder lip than I might normally, so that’s been fun. Between the By Terry Click Sticks, Cle de Peau Radiant Liquids, the Tom Ford duos and now the Armani Lip Magnets (see Temptation below) I’ve got a small but amazing arsenal to choose from every day.

What didn’t impress you? Nothing really. The closest disappointment was probably the Mario palette for me because of the color scheme. Press photos were more neutral than the actual palette – which was warmer than I was expecting. From what I’ve seen and read, it’s beautiful – just not for me overall.

Did you return anything you purchase? I’ve been on a cleaning/organizing jag and found some duplicate skincare items in my linen closet that I wasn’t going to get to for awhile, so they went back to Nordstrom (love their return policy), exchange an Armani Maestro foundation for the Maestro Glow (which I like so much more) and of course the ABH Mario palette. I’m not a huge “returner” but I’ve been making an effort to shop my stash/closet and use up the things I have.

Or successfully resist temptation? Yes and no. Given the returns I had and the price points of them, I returned waaaay more than I bought. I did pick up two Armani lip magnets (601 and 602) over the weekend, along with Cle de Peau liquid lip in Lempicka Red and the new Armani holiday Night Lights palette. I came so close to buying Armani Lip Magnet 402, which I loved and wore all day, but I couldn’t justify 2 reds on the same day (apparently only 2 plums). Red is getting more rotation these days, but I’m still a newbie wearing it to work, etc. so 402 remains on my wish list for now. You really do forget you have something on your lips – I’m not a matte liquid lip fan at all, but these have blown my mind. You should swatch in person as they dry a little different in color than you might think; at least with the pinks (500 range) and the reds look really similar in the tube (not sure what to call it!), but the colors are different. Highly, highly recommend!

Lea Avatar

I’ve been oddly (given my hesitancy) fascinated with reds this week! I found some blister/sample packs of Armani Rouge D’Armani in 400 and mini tubes of Rouge Ecstasy in 400, so I’ve had a day of each (the firmer texture of the Ecstasy balm makes it really precise; I needed a liner for the Rouge D’Armani). Yesterday was all about the CdP Lempicka which looks beautiful and wore all day through 3 cups of coffee and my larger BKR water bottle only starting to fade when I started dinner around 7pm. I was shocked at the wear, given how emollient the formula is. I also tried the sampler of one of the peachier CdP liquids (there are 4 colors in the blister pack) which was nice as a light wash, but not a color I will likely buy. Tomorrow is going to be a Lip Magnet day – probably 601, so I’ll have to report back.

This red rotation is so not me, but I’m enjoying it — it’s making not buying the Magnet in 402 (deeper red than the Armani universal 400) a bigger struggle. I’m trying to remind myself that it’s not going anywhere and the Sephora sale benefit of $8 isn’t enough incentive to break my efforts to not buy until red is in my rotation enough to warrant needing another shade. I’m going to try putting my 400 blister samples into a mini lip palette to see if that satisfies the urge for a bit and has the bonus of not worrying if the blister packs are going to get all over my purse.

I’m saving for a downpayment for a house right now, so I’ve managed to resist all beauty releases this month! Adulting… Anyway, I added some items to my holiday wishlist and gave the list over to my hubby. It should be a satisfying Christmas stocking this year.

Lacey Avatar

I had to add the Bite Beauty in Red Velvet to my wish list. I tried resisting it after your original review but seeing it again today… Well….. I think it will have to be my new winter lippie.

Helene Avatar

You have had one busy month. 568 reviews, that is a lot.
Thank you for all your hard work, your’e the best!
I do have some favourtites from last month, the Colourm Pop products I bought, Paradosx and Calypso and some others you reviewed. I really like them and use them a lot. Calypso is very different from anything I’ve ever used, I like that I get out of my old comfort zone thanks to your reviews and awesome photos.
I don’t think I’ve resisted anything. I’ve not been to Sephora for quite some time, and it seems rather that products are resisting me 🙂 I tried to order the Besame lipstick set from Cult Beauty today, and they don’t ship one of the items in my bag to my part of the world. I have a Besame powder and a Jouer lipbalm in the bag as well, and they have shipped Jouer earlier, so I suppose it’s Besame. I’m waiting for an answer to the e-mail I sent to enquire.

Lea Avatar

I had a similar issue trying to do an order through Cult Beauty – I think in my case it was the Huda Beauty lip liners. Not sure why lip products wouldn’t ship internationally, but it might be a sales arrangement over which vendor can sell in certain countries.

-What were your favorites from the last month? Definitely the bite beauty amuse bouch lipsticks! They are one of my favourite lipstick formula!!
-What didn’t impress you? The only thing I could say that didn’t impress me was the speed that the ABH Mario palette sold out at!! 🙁
-Did you return anything you purchase? The only purchase I made last month was the bite beauty amuse bouch mini lipstick set. (Sooo cute!!). It was a fun way to add more colours to my collection of amuse bouch lipsticks! (That was a long way of saying no!)
-Or successfully resist temptation? Sadly I resisted the ABH Mario palette too long that it sold out!! 🙁
Question for Christine – Do you think you will be reviewing the new Mauvember bite beauty lipstick? 🙂

Karen Avatar

The top three that I have been using the most lately are, Honeycomb, Pepper and Rhubarb! I’ve also recently discovered how much I enjoy Nori! I’m looking forward to buying both Mistletoe and Mauvember on Friday! 🙂
(I also wish that Nars Mona would be restocked soon!)

What were your favorites from the last month? Kat von D Metal Matte; Wet n Wild Coverall Pressed Powder (I’d never used it before this month); Nyx Liquid Suede Cream in Oh, Put It On; Tarte Amazonian Blush Color Wheel Palette; Lunatick Labs Elvira Palette (especially the blush, Super Unleaded), MAC Nutcracker Sweet Magic Dust Powder in Sweet Vision and Lipstick in Saucy Little Darling (What an amazing coral-pink!); and the Urban Decay Vintage Vault Vice Lipsticks.

What didn’t impress you? Urban Decay Full Spectrum is disappointing. I’m going to wait and see if it goes on sale to buy it, if I buy it. Urban Decay Ultimate Basics Palette: I like it fine and some of the shades (like Lethal) are really nice, but it’s not blowing me away, either.

Did you return anything you purchased? No

Or successfully resist temptation? So far I’m resisting the Tarte Tarteist Pro Palette, though I might ask for it for Christmas.

1. What were your favorites from the last month? The MAC Nutcracker Sweet Collection – so many good things! I am really loving the eyeshadow palettes and the Extra Dimension Skinfinish face palettes.
2. What didn’t impress you? Chanel’s release, I guess – not my colors and seem more dreary than Holiday/festive.
3. Did you return anything you purchase? None!
4. Or successfully resist temptation? Not a chance. I indulged to the hilt! I went Sunday and got all of the MAC pieces I wanted after I got my makeover and my Tom Ford came in, and I had quite a few Satin and Glossy Lips from ColourPop. I’m in full revelry over here!

Pearl Avatar

? For this week I am wearing the cool eyeshadow palette with the Extra Dimension Peach face kit and the nude lip bag (the one with Magic Spell lipstick and the Vamplify gloss). I think next week I will do the smokey. So for right now, the cool is my favorite. ?

I really like the look of the Smoky, though.
