ColourPop Calypso Ultra Satin Liquid Lipstick
ColourPop Calypso Ultra Satin Liquid Lipstick

ColourPop Calypso Ultra Satin Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a medium, rosy plum with warm undertones and a satin finish. The product was extremely pigmented with opaque coverage in one pass. It had a smooth, lightweight consistency that was thin and almost runny, but it had some body to it and spread well across the lips. It took about an hour for it to “dry” down to a true satin finish, and while it was not transfer-proof, it barely transferred after one or two presses on the back of my hand. This shade wore well for almost eight hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. Bobbi Brown Downtown Plum (DC, $37.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). Too Faced Girl Code (P, $22.00) is cooler (90% similar). Burberry Fawn (05) (P, $34.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). MAC Nude Fudge (LE, $19.00) is warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Daydream (P, $6.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Fenty Beauty Ballin' Babe (P, $20.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Spank Me Santa (LE, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). Giorgio Armani Independent (200) (P, $38.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Coffee and Cigs (P, $23.00) is darker (80% similar). bareMinerals Panko (P, $20.00) is darker, brighter (85% similar). ColourPop Frick 'n' Frack (P, $7.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Shiseido Red Queen (RD716) (DC, $28.00) is cooler (85% similar). Tarte Mani (LE, $20.00) is cooler (85% similar). Pat McGrath Lavish (DC, $40.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Dr. Facilier (LE, $8.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (85% similar). ColourPop Mosh Pit (LE, $7.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tarte Beach Bum (P, $22.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Shiseido Rose Crush (RD715) (DC, $28.00) is darker, more muted, cooler (85% similar). Maybelline Touch of Spice (P, $7.99) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Richard (P, $36.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. ColourPop Hutch Ultra Satin Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a deep, plummy purple with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It was nearly opaque in coverage, but it is a very deep, rich shade that it was hard to tell it wasn’t fully opaque. The consistency was thin, smooth, and easily spread across the lips without becoming uneven or patchy, though it was a little more emollient than other Ultra Satins and seemed to gather in lip lines very slightly. It wore well for seven and a half hours, but it was prone to wearing away more readily from the center of the mouth. It was a little drying toward the end of wearing it. MAC Cyber (P, $19.00) is glossier (95% similar). Bite Beauty Berry Rouge (LE, $26.00) is cooler (95% similar). Urban Decay Troublemaker (LE, $18.00) is lighter (95% similar). NARS Wild Night (P, $26.00) is lighter, less glossy (90% similar). Maybelline Blackest Berry (DC, $7.49) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Instigator (P, $19.00) is lighter (85% similar). Estee Lauder Extrovert (P, $32.00) is lighter, more muted (90% similar). Make Up For Ever Passionate Fig (220) (P, $23.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Spellbound (LE, $18.00) is less glossy (90% similar). Sephora Polar Lights (78) (LE, $8.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Bite Beauty Damson (P, $24.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Power My Spirit (LE, $19.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Midnight Breeze (LE, $19.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Phenomenal Woman (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Nevermind (LE, $7.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Pat McGrath Deep Void (LE, $38.00) is cooler (90% similar). Bite Beauty Black Truffle (DC, $24.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). MAC Which Witch (LE, $19.00) is warmer (90% similar). Pat McGrath Exxotica (LE, $40.00) is lighter (85% similar). Smashbox Bride of Chucky (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Formula Overview

ColourPop Ultra Satin Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a “lightweight, bold lipstick with a satin finish” that is “extra intense colour saturation” and “long-wearing,” but the brand is quick to note that it is “not completely kiss proof.” The consistency is very light to lightweight with a thin to mousse-like consistency–they feel a little heavier going on than the Ultra Matte formula, but they don’t feel heavy on. They dry down somewhat, but it isn’t a full, flat dry down like matte liquid lipsticks, and when you press your lips together, there is moderate tackiness there, but I didn’t notice any lifting or separating of color by doing so. Thus far, they have been extremely long-wearing and comfortable to wear for the most part–it’s after ten hours or so that I notice my lips feeling a little dry–but six hours into wear and the colors have looked good post-meals/post-drinking. I think if you like the idea of longer-wearing, mostly matte lip color but find most liquid lipsticks too drying or too flat while not needing an ultra-hydrating formula, you might like these.

These look fantastic! I really dig their Ultra Satin formula, it is much more comfortable than the Ultra Mattes. I’m loving the look of Calypso, but I already own two of the dupes and The Balm Trustworthy, which seems close too. Hutch is definitely on my wislish though: looks like a great vampy shade for just 6 bucks!

I’m been Humming and Hawing over buying Hutch ever since It came out. But, I just don’t want to pay the 12$ shipping it’ll be if I buy it and the two other things I want. 😛

For India, it’s 9.99 USD as shipping fee and I’ve always had to pay customs, which completely negates the low price point. Even so, I’m addicted to Colourpop. 🙂

i wore calypso today! so comfortable to wear. i agree—i found it surprisingly transfer-proof considering it was definitely a satin finish.

Ah, love Calypso! So funny, I just opened this post and then one of my staff members came in with my Colourpop order, which had just been delivered… (goes to rip it open in delight!)

OMG I was staring at Hutch on Colourpop’s website all day yesterday because I really wanted a vampy purple but because I like instant gratification and apparently wasting money, I ended up going to Sephora at my lunchtime and buying Marc Jacob’s Scandal on a whim. Well, of course I came back to work to see what rating you had given Scandal and it was like a C- I think. And you were so right about it! Buuuuuuut I do love the color. So I may just give in and buy Hutch too! Thanks for the review! I LOVE Colourpop’s Ultra Satin formula!

Calypso is a nice neutral, but I think I can pass since it’s quite close to YSL rouge volupte shine # 9 (“Nude in Private”) that I have. Lovely eye look!

Christine – How do you apply the darker Ultra Satin shades? I have Hutch and I have such a hard time with feathering and product smearing all over. I suppose it’s a downside of it being super pigmented and emollient for comfort! I’m waiting for a new lip brush in the mail, so hopefully that helps with keeping application in the lines.
