Stone Cold Fox

Colour Pop Stone Cold Fox 30-Pan Shadow Palette ($34.00 for 0.92 oz.) is a new, permanent (as permanent as something can be with ColourPop, ha, ha, ha) that includes 30 shades across a mix of matte and shimmer finishes. The quality was decent overall with some matte eyeshadows being more powdery and needing to be built up (or having fallout), while the shimmers were a little softer but were usually fine to work with.

I would recommend using an eyeshadow primer, which helped to minimize some of the issues across the board but also helped prevent some shades from looking muddy. The types of tones in the palette can have a tendency to muddy quickly if using too many together as they are desaturated.

So Fine (Stone Cold Fox)

So Fine (Stone Cold Fox) is a light pink with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The texture was more loosely-pressed, so there was a bit of fallout during application, but it had opaque color coverage that was blendable. It wore well for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent).

Formula Overview

$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours.

The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Trip

Trip is a light beige with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had a more powdery consistency that had a fair amount of fallout/flyaway product, so it worked better applied initially if it was going to be above anything else (like on the brow bone). It had mostly opaque color coverage, though. It stayed on well for seven hours before fading visibly.

Mystery

Mystery is a medium-dark pink base with flecks of darker pink and copper sparkle over a more frosted finish. The color payoff was mostly opaque, which could be built up but was best applied over an eyeshadow primer with a fingertip as this managed the fallout and improved the smoothness of the powder. The consistency was more powdery and chunky, so it was more prone to emphasizing skin texture. It lasted well for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Hard Place

Hard Place is a light-medium bronze with warm, reddish undertones and a metallic finish. The eyeshadow had rich color payoff with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was soft and blendable. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Gneiss Guy

Gneiss Guy is a warmer, reddish-brown base with shimmer that shifted from blue-to-teal and gave it a metallic finish. The consistency felt more loosely-pressed, so I would recommend using a pressing or patting motion–or else apply with a dampened brush or fingertip–to minimize fallout and get a smoother application of product. It had full color payoff in one layer, which lasted well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Rock Bottom

Rock Bottom is an inky black with neutral undertones and a semi-matte finish. The consistency was soft and fairly blendable, but it was firmer and a little stiff to work with. I found it worked best built up in smaller layers and layered over other shades as I could diffuse it into other products but less so on its own to begin with. It wore well for eight hours before fading a bit.

Drama Mama

Drama Mama is a deep brown with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. The texture was somewhat powdery, which resulted in a bit of a fallout during application, while the eyeshadow itself had opaque pigmentation that stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Obsidian

Obsidian is a muted, burgundy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color coverage with a slightly drier, somewhat powdery texture, though it blended out without too much effort. It lasted well for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

You ever see a palette that you know you’d enjoy using, but realize it’s just way too big in an unwieldy kind of way? Yeah, that’s basically my feelings towards this. Easy to talk myself out of getting too because I have ND Glam, Viseart Chroma, Nars Calisto, Mac Haux, Satin Taupe, Folie, Orb, etc. In other words, I think I’ll pass.

If I were just starting to get heavily into eyeshadows and if I didn’t already have a massive collection of neutral shadows from light to dark, cool to less cool and shimmery to matte, I would want this. If ColourPop were available in stores, I would probably buy this. If I had a larger surface area for putting on makeup, I would totally love this.

Holy Mumma – What a huge palette to review! It’s waaay too big and there seems to be quite a lot of duplications in the matte and some in the shimmer shades. Generally it is of a reasonable quality and it is CP’s effort to produce a more cooler toned palette, but it needed to be halved in quantity.
Personally, the only shades I liked were the ones also found in the ND Glam palette – so I am happy I have that.

Too big. Too many dusty pinks. Too many dusty purples.

As my collection grows ever larger I’ve really become picky on what gets added to it. I was initially excited about this release, and then immediately passed after getting a good look.

Lol. I might. I think there’s room in my Adept (second one for CP, embarrassed to say.). The Adept is hardly travel-friendly and quite heavy, but a great place for singles and depotted shades at home. The older I get, the more I gravitate to these lighter shades that ‘anti-pop.’

So in their “cool” palatte, they’ve added colors in the following ratios:
20 warm – 6 cool – 3 neutral/undeclared

As a cool-colored girl, that’s what I’ve generally come to expect. Is it that cool colors are harder to manufacture in cosmetics? Are there chemical reactions involved that naturally favor warm colors?

satsumacaravan Avatar

I’m also super cool-toned and know the feeling. I looked for the same stats straightaway. Note that the scores for some of the “cooler” shades in this palette, like Rumor Mill, aren’t as high as the others. It may be that it’s harder to manufacture cooler tones like the purples. There is the tendency for colors to oxidate (go warm in sunlight, heat, general weathering effects, etc). White paper can turn yellow, indigo can oxidize in a greenish way, any hair color can turn “brassy” (especially if there’s lots of iron in your water), and the list goes on. Cool colors are always naturally unstable due to oxidation, even when they’re in fact “natural”.

Still, the cool tones can be done by cosmetic companies that set out to do them well. Compare CP’s Rumor Mill (which got a C) to Sydney Grace’s Officer (which gets an A). Personally, I’ve found that it’s well-worth investing in SG single eyeshadows. They’re amazingly well priced and pretty stellar quality overall. They do pull even cooler on me than on many reviews. This is because your skin’s undertone tends to peek through the pigment, almost like a kind of backlighting effect…

So SG’s Thunderbird comes across as a light periwinkle blue on my eyes rather than any kind of grey. I do love it, but also keep questing for a matte steel-blue grey that will look that color on my lids. I also find that matte purple-ish taupes, like SG’s Concrete Road (even though it’s not the absolute coolest) give a pretty natural effect.

For reference, I’m very cool and muted. If you’re cool and bright, you might prefer shadows leaning in that direction instead.

I got this palette as soon as it came out and was so excited for it, as a cool-neutral lover. It’s my biggest makeup release disappointment of 2020. The looks all come out basically the same, which may come as no surprise, given the spectral range. But worse, they look terribly muddy. Christine explains thid in the review – the tones are desaturated. Basically, you can’t layer them. The black is just terrible if you want an outer corner pop. The metallic colors are underwhelming and you’d need to foil them and even then, disappointing for someone (me) used to a Natasha Denona or Pat McGrath pop and shine. This is the opposite of that. It’s dull, boring, redundant, and muddy.
I can’t recommend this to anyone, and if you are in the medium to dark range of skin tone – forget it. You’ll get one look out of this ridiculously huge palette and you’ll have to work for it.
It may best be used as a one and done – ironic, given the seeming large selection of color.
If you like shades of mauve and don’t care about color saturation, use it like that – a one and done mauve look. You’ll likely find that one perfect tone and use it till you hit pan. Then I suggest to sell the rest on Mercari.
Or just throw it out and get something else.

Idk. Disappointing. I feel badly for Christine, who had to review so many mediocre shades in this thing.

Krisabele Avatar

Having the palette, I agree that it is pretty inconsistent. The shades in the grey/black row was low quality, especially Rumor Mill and U Rock which are both powdery, patchy and hard to work with. This saddens me a bit because that was what drew me into the palette. The other rows are OK.

I wished they maintained the same quality as with the So Jaded palette. That was high quality enough I forget it costs only around 1 dollar per shade.

Erin Avatar

Thank you for this great review. One question – you’ve described the majority of the shadows as having warm undertones, but this is being marketed as a “cool toned” palette. Do you think someone looking for a true cool toned palette would be disappointed?
