Lancome Auda[city] in Paris Eyeshadow Palette
Lancome Auda[city] in Paris Eyeshadow Palette ($68.00 for 0.72 oz.) is a smokier set of shades that mixes cool and warm undertones to create a gradient of color ranging from light gold to smoky purple to matte black. I think the color combination is more unusual but still familiar. The textures were very, very similar to Urban Decay Naked Smoky to me (all owned by the same parent) — the mattes had a thinner, slightly dusty, “noisy” texture; there’s a distinct sound that I can hear when my brush passes across the surface of them that I don’t notice with a lot of other eyeshadows. It applied better than it swatched, and the product seems more buildable than anything else. I felt like my eyelids look a little drier with this formula on. The palette is best paired with your go-to primer, as it will help you get truer-to-pan color and greater intensity, though the wear with most shades was near to the eight-hour mark without a primer. I have a few of these shades as singles from several years ago (so I don’t know if they have reformulated at some point in the last four or five years), but the versions in the palette are less dense and drier to me. The palette itself is large and feels a little bulky, but it contains a lot so I think it is travel-friendly if you don’t midn the weight or are going for a longer trip; and I consistently had a little struggle getting it open (just doesn’t seem to have a good groove to open for my finger/hand size, I guess!).
As a heads up, Filigree, Exhibition, Zip Me Up, Volcano, IT List, Kitten Heel, and Clock Strikes 12 are all shades that show up as shades in the individual, permanent Color Design eyeshadow range.
Filigree is described as a “light gold shimmer.” It’s a light-medium, buttery yellow gold with a frosted finish. Chouquette is described as a “peach matte.” It’s a light, warm-toned beige with very subtle shimmer, but it’s not totally matte. Applied, it looks more matte than anything else. The texture has a thinner, dusty kind of texture, so it is more prone to sheering out when blended or kicking up excess in the pan so use a gentler touch when grabbing this shade. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. KVD Beauty Rust (Highlight) (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). LORAC Chantilly (PiP, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Parfait is described as a “light pink matte.” It’s a light-medium, cool-toned pink with a mostly matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a powdery consistency, so it blended well but could exacerbate dryness on the lids without a primer underneath. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Sephora Ballet (LE, ) is warmer (95% similar). Tarte Charitable (LE, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Studio (LE, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). Joie is described as a “golden-bronze shimmer.” It’s a light-medium, godlen pewter with warm undertones and a frosted, metallic finish. The texture was smooth but a little dry, while the color payoff was mostly opaque and the eyeshadow was still easy to use and applied well. It started to fade after eight hours of wear. Voyage is described as a “muted purple matte.” It’s a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque coverage with a noticeably powdery texture. It was better built-up in thinner layers, and of course, primer would make it sing. It was very blendable without sheering out too much, despite its powderiness. It wore well for eight hours on me. Sante is described as a “brown matte.” It’s a soft, medium brown with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. The powder had a thin, dusty texture with semi-sheer coverage. It was harder to build this shade up for me in practice, though I was almost able to get medium coverage (no primer, of course). While it seems dusty, it does blend well on the skin. It lasted for seven hours. Urban Decay Downfall (LE, $19.00) is warmer, better quality (95% similar). KVD Beauty Glasswing (DC, ) is darker (95% similar). Exhibition is described as a “orchid shimmer.” It’s a muted, medium rosy mauve with a pearly sheen. It had semi-sheer coverage that couldn’t be built up on its own, as it had a tendency to sheer out if more product was added. The dusty texture made it difficult to get it to stick evenly to bare skin. It seemed faded and “worn” after six and a half hours of wear. LORAC Lotus (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). NARS Kari (P, $29.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Dress Me Up (LE, $17.00) is cooler (90% similar). LORAC Plum (Mega Pro 4) (LE, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Zip Me Up is described as a “deep purple shimmer.” It’s a dark, smoky purple with cooler undertones and a frosted, slightly metallic sheen with a little sparkle. The sparkle doesn’t stick well to the underlying eyeshadow, so there was some fall out during application. It had a denser texture compared to the majority of the palette, but I wouldn’t actually describe it as a dense texture. It had good pigmentation, and it applied fairly well to the lid but did sheer out a bit. It wore for eight hours on me. Tarte Fairy (PiP, ) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). MAC Frost at Midnight (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). NARS Quai des Brumes (Left) (DC, $25.00) is lighter (90% similar). Volcano is described as a “silvery gray shimmer.” It’s a muted, medium-dark taupe brown with subtle warm undertones and a cooler, distinctively gray overtone. It had a soft, frosted shimmer to it that gave it a more pearly finish. It had good color payoff, while the texture shared that dustiness that most of the shades have had in this palette. This shade seemed lighter than the single version I have. It lasted for eight hours. Anastasia Antique (LE, $12.00) is warmer (95% similar). Couture is described as a “dark brown matte.” It’s a dark brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer coverage and had a firm consistency that made it hard to apply and blend out. It looked as patchy applied to the lid as it did in the swatch. It wore for near to eight hours, but it just didn’t look very good. I feel like this is one of the shades that would be reached for often, so it is a disappointment that it is hard to work with. Tarte Eiffel for You (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Kitten Heel is described as a “gold copper shimmer.” It’s a brightened, medium pink with warm undertones and warm, golden frost. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that applied decently to the skin, but it didn’t seem like it binded together as well as it could so it actually applies best with fingertips, sponge-tipped applicator, flat synthetic brush, and then patted and packed on rather than swept on (or else it sheers out considerably!). It lasted for eight hours on me. Urban Decay Scene (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Viseart Darling (LE, ) is warmer (95% similar). Urban Decay X (DC, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). Tenacity is described as a “purple metallic.” It’s a brightened, medium taupe brown with warmer undertones and a cooler, gray metallic sheen. It had good color coverage with a soft, blendable texture that seemed to have larger chunks of sparkle in it, which didn’t combine with the powder well so they tended to dust away. The color lasted for eight hours before fading. Viseart Velvet (PiP, ) is darker (90% similar). Anastasia Libra (LE, $12.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Clock Strikes 12 is described as a “gray metallic.” It’s a smoky, dark taupe brown with cool undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation with a thin texture that tended to go on unevenly. I highly recommend using a very feathery brush and wear a base shade or primer underneath to make blending more manageable. It wore for seven and a half hours on me. Shoot, I was hoping that it would perform a bit better… But after the sneak peek I was pretty much expecting something like this, hits and misses. Thanks for having such a thorough review up so soon, Christine!
No problem, Melissa!
Thanks for the review. You just saved my beauty budget. 🙂
My pleasure, ElKay!
Pass. If it were aroun$40-45, I soul consider and doctor it up. But,at this price, I could throw $12 more in and buy a Viseart which I have so been wanting. I’m surprised Lisa Eldridge wouldn’t test out quality before adding her name.
Viseart is sooooo much better. That’s what I was thinking while reviewing: “Might as well just buy a Viseart palette!”
I’m so glad you said this! Validates my purchase of two more viseart palettes that are on their way to me! I already have the bridal & dark mattes & I can’t believe I use one or the other everyday I wear makeup! I saw this Lancome palette in a magazine recently I knew you would have a great review. Like many others I’m disappointed it didn’t perform better but I’m not feeling like I’m missing out because of the Viseart palettes! Thank you Christine for your thorough and honest reviews!
Wow. That’s so unfortunate. I can’t believe Lisa Eldridge would attach her name to something like this.
Lisa is the creative director of Lancome, however she should not be responsible for the formula of Lancome’s eyeshadows. Her design of this palette is pretty impressive. The shadows have been trashy for a long time and the formula director did nothing to save their name.
Thanks for saving me money, Christine! As soon as I learned that Lisa Eldrige headed up the creation of this palette I was so ready to buy it. Your review helped tame the lemming 🙂
It has a nice variety of cooler/warmer and matte/shimmer, but pigmentation just seems lower across the board – whether intentional or not, I am unsure.
Meh. It’s so… Clunky looking. Everything, the design, the layout, the graphics… The formula would have had to have been something revolutionary and great to sway me, but no, no thank you. However, I’m sure it will be a top seller nonetheless.
I wish it performed better!
I wonder what they (Corporate) wants for this brand. Are they trying to expand their customer base? Seems they have to do better, all the way through the process. Oh well, it’s not like high-end brands don’t put out C grade palettes. Thanks for reviewing this one so quickly!
No problem, Miss E! I think this must be a new direction for the eyeshadow formula, but I wonder if it’s “we think it’s better” or a “this is good enough and saves us some money.”
I also believe they (L’Oreal) changed up their formula across the brands they own! First thought I have had is: “Hmm, seems like they removed a binder ingredient. But WHY? Allergies? Complaints? Expense?”
Right?? I’m more cynical, but I’d like to believe that deep down they thought it was better, too, LOL.
Same here; likely something “cost effective”. When I look at L’Oreal lately, it’s like the wheel is turning, but the hamster is dead, LoL!
That’s really interesting! Sounds to me that if they want to be cost effective, they ought to spend the extra dollar making a nice formula, instead of throwing glamorous parties for A-listers all over the world, and making the retouchers work over-time to blur promo images to oblivion to make the so-so product appear decent in ads.
Yikes. All of the shades are dupable and thankfully enough, I have very VERY similar shades.
Yay for dupes!
Christine – you put a smile on my face because this has to be the first time I’ve ever seen an eyeshadow described as “noisy”. I don’t know why but this one left me cold from the first time I saw photos of it – something about the way the textures look and the colours themselves – it just didn’t look all that great to me and it seems that my first impression was accurate.
It is bizarre — it’s like the dryness + thinness = noise. I really like the idea of it, and I like how they used warm/cool, matte/frost in it, but it just doesn’t hit those high notes.
I have to say that despite all the shortcomings of this, the look you did was absolutely stunning. I think I’ll try to do it with the dupes I have but that eye pencil…heck, it puts me in mind of Bare Minerals 5 AM in terms of how unique it seems. I’m going to check to see if it’s in the Dupe List but I fear not…
Not yet, haven’t reviewed the Zoeva eyeliner yet. 5AM is definitely in the realm though 🙂
I’m so bummed that 5 AM isn’t at Sephora – they have 2 of the Round the Clock liners on the site, both “online only” and neither is 5 AM. I do hope it makes an appearance at some point soon.
Hopefully it’s just lagging behind!
Although I hadn’t purchased anything Lancome in literally years, I ordered this from Lancome as soon as it was made available. When I received it, I was so disappointed by how much warmer the palette is in person than in photos. Granted, I’ve not yet used it so in application the colors made look better on my skin…maybe. Sigh.
Keep us posted on quality at least, Christina! 🙂
I wonder whether companies have figured out that using primer is now a Thing and adjusted their formulas accordingly…?
Formulation aside, the color combination here would make this a great travel palette for me. Throw in a few eyeliners in gold, navy, black, deep green, and plum and Bob’s your uncle.
The color combo is really nice, I think!
I was thinking the same thing — the color range is perfect for travel, which I do a fair amount of, needing day and night looks. Always on the look out for the “perfect for me” color range, and I thought maybe this was it. Apparently not. Will stick with my customized Inglots, I guess
Disappointing but not surprising since the initial swatches looked so hit or miss. At $ 68, this would have to score A/B+ to interest me. If they had eliminated the 4 shadows that scored D/F, kept the 12 that scored A/B, and dropped the price to $50, this would’ve been more attractive. I really like Kitten Heels, so I’m going to try to dupe it (mix pink and gold shadow/highlighter) but if that doesn’t work, I will have to buy the single and hope it sticks on my lids. It’s so pretty!
Fingers crossed you can dupe it! 🙂
MAC Expensive Pink looks like a dead-on dupe, I think! And Maybelline has a beautiful single eyeshadow called Pink Wink that looks like this too!
Thanks so much Nancy T.!! I googled both, and they look like pretty good dupes The Lancôme single is $20, but the MAC one is $16, and Maybelline is $5 or less. Hey at that price, close enough LOL I will check those out. Thanks again!
Thanks for reviewing this! I’m glad to know not to waste my money…:)
Sure thing, Christine! 🙂
Wow! What a gorgeous palette. I definitely already own way too many shadows that are similar, so I won’t be purchasing this one. Your pictures/swatches are fabulous. I always like seeing products on your eyes because our eye color is the same. Stacie xo
Thank you, Stacie!
I had hopes for this in the sneak peek especially since I haven’t bought any Lancome in years but now I know I can put that money towards some more Charlotte Tilbury products 🙂 Thanks Christine!
My pleasure, Deidre!
Well that’s disappointing. I have neutral Lancome quad from 2008 and the quality was excellent, and I was hoping this would be as well. Oh well, at least my wallet will be happy.
I really need to check out their current formula to see if it’s really changed that much!
Disappointed. Was really hoping that this one would be an easier to use alternative to UD Naked Smoky, but nope. Seems like L’Oreal has majorly screwed up their owned company’s eyeshadow formulations! It’s as if they’ve gone and taken out a necessary binding agent from them, or added a cheaper filler like adding more talc or something. But WHY?!?
Me too, Nancy! I liked the theme they had going 🙁
I love all these colors, especially in a palette (that Lisa Eldridge had influence in making, I think), but I can’t pay that much for colors that aren’t all at least A-. :/ Maybe I should go for the Naked Smoky Palette.
I like the concept and how there’s a variety of finishes, but they just weren’t all up to snuff!
With the price point and the grade? No, it’s a pass. A shame, because I do think it’s a pretty palette but I can spend my money on other things!
Yay for other things 😉
Well, this has moved firmly into the “pass” category for me.
I was sooo excited for it 🙁
Me, too. The color scheme is gorgeous. 🙁
I feel like this is the palette people have been wanting Urban Decay’s newest Naked to be for a long time. Maybe they would have done a better job with the execution? It’s a shame about the quality for the price, it was such a pretty concept!
The colors had promise for sure!
I wish zip me up and nuit came in singles!
Zip Me Up does!
Nope. At essentially 70 bucks , it had to perform well to get my money. Maybe instead I’ll look at the ysl palettes that are coming our , or I’ll just save my pennies for the holiday palettes coming out
I’m sure there will be a ton of holiday palettes to pick from!
This was disappointing. I was hoping that bringing Lisa Eldridge on board might mean a bump in quality for Lancôme. This is the type of palette that I really wouldn’t have gone for at this point, I have too much in my collection already for something so, I guess “basic” is the word that fits best. Some of these shades are quite pretty in the pan, but also very dupable. Despite the hit or miss nature of the quality for this, the look you put together is quite lovely.
I could see it being a real workhorse for some if it was more consistent!
Thanks for the awesome review Christine! Sadly, it sounds like this performed just like I was afraid it would. The upside is I just saved $68! LOL!
The Kitten Heel color really reminds me a lot of Sugarpill’s Kitten Parade, which performs out of this world!
No problem, Alicia!
Oh no! I was eyeing on this, but nevermind. LoL The colors are pretty on pan though. 🙂
Awww!
Oh, Lancôme, you keep building me up with pretty Paris packaging, and letting me down with so-so formulas and dupable colors. Money saved, though!
I really wanted this to do well!
This is about the rating I thought it would get by looking at the swatches. Again two dark browns and blacks have been included -not really necessary. And two orangey colours as well. A wide range of ratings show the inconsistencies of the formulas. The only colour I really liked was Nuit.
It looked sooo promising 🙁
Oh yay! The review does include the phrase I wanted to hear: “applied better than it swatched.” Still, I’m super bummed that it’s not a fantastic palette. I think I’ll still grab it because with a primer, it should be better, and I’m one of those people who always uses primer anyway.
Plus I’ve had a $16 Macy’s gift card running on three years now, so… technically it won’t cost me full price. Look at me, justifying this! 😛
The only thing that’s holding me back is that Laura Mercier Artist for Eyes palette was actually Temptalia Recommended!
Hopefully you’ll have a chance to check it out in-store and see if it’s the right palette for you! 🙂
You may not want to have given Volcano a 25.5 in longevity! 🙂
Fixed!
Sorry but this looks so boring. It could be a palette from any drugstore brand, reading the reviews the quality seems very cheap drugstore.
Drugstore palettes can be quite good!
I was kinda waiting for this palette! Doesnt seem worth the money! Better stick to my urban decay palette as of now !!
Thank you for such an amazing detailed review!
My pleasure, Rashmi! xo
love the colour Kitten Heel, apart from that pretty disappointing really 🙁 Such a shame as i was expecting much better
Kitten Heel is a cool shade — you see it in forms, but it has a really strong bright pink base, which is why it’s not quite the same as some others!
Lancôme packaging was never one of the brands i was drawn to because of their packaging. But it’s just a personal preference. I was considering the palette in support of Lisa Eldridges’s name with it. But now I’m reconsidering. The layout too I find odd. It’s like the shades on the bottom were just squished into the palette. It doesn’t seem intentional like the Kat Von D shade and light or the chocolate bar palette where certain shades were made bigger purposely. I’m sure there was a lot of thought in the entire process but the flow of it just feels unharmonious. 🙁
Hopefully you can check it out in store sometime to see if it’s worth it after all! I think having 12 shades may have been nicer, just to keep it very slim and edited, though I don’t really mind 16!
Not a surprise it didn’t get a good grade after seeing the swatches you posted some days or so ago. I think the idea of this palette is good, a nice mixture of matte and shimmer.
Having loads of palettes this didn’t tempt me all that much, the only shade I really liked was Kitten Heel, while I don’t have any of the top dupes I do have MAC Rose pigment and it’s close enough for me.
Thanks for such a thorough review!
Rose pigment should get you close enough! Maybe tap a lil’ gold on top to get even closer.
That’s a bummer 🙁 The colors look so pretty!
To be honest though, I have never had much luck with Lancome makeup products. I love their eyeliners and some mascara products, but the eyeshadows are always lacking…
I liked some of their Color Design quads from years ago (like 2011-ish), but I haven’t tried that much from them in the last couple of years.
Dear Christine,
I would like to know when this palette will be launched/available in the rest part of Europe?
Thank You.
Sorry, I don’t have any information on this palette other than what was posted on Lancome.com!
I got this today, I like it. I thought the purple shade one would be more purple, but all the colors can blend well and not make a mess( to me ) I put like 6 colors and made a subtle daytime look without much effort. Not super pigmented colors or staining to the brushes.
Happy to hear you like it, Rachel!
It looks so dupeable with all my Naked palettes. o_o You are a savior of wallets! Hahaha
xoxo
This palette reminded me so much to the Naked Smoky and Naked 3 palettes. I really wanted it to have nice quality, that way I could just get the best of both worlds in one, but seems not. Thanks for the review Christine!
No problem, Maria!
