Born to Run

Urban Decay Born to Run 21-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.42 oz.) is a solid mix of neutrals and color with a deeper, more autumnal-vibe than traditional summer offerings. For long-time fans, there are plenty of shades in the palette reminiscent from past releases, but for those who haven’t indulged in lots of Urban Decay, it’s a beautiful palette that’s high-quality, easy to use, and versatile. It leaned slightly more shimmery, but there were enough mattes and near-mattes that I didn’t struggle to create looks with the palette. The price point is in a sweet spot (for those who buy mid- and high-end) with lots of variety and a decent pan size (0.02 oz. each) with a slim design (though it’s definitely a larger palette in terms of width) that should be travel-friendly. The only downside was I wish the mirror/lid stayed up on its own.

Breakaway

Breakaway is a soft beige with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The pigmentation was good–nearly opaque–with a soft, velvety texture that was a touch dusty in the pan but applied well and blended out without sheering out too readily. It wore well for eight hours on me.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.05 oz. - $380.00 Per Ounce

The formula is typically described as "high-pigment" that "stays on your lids" and goes on "seamlessly." Their permanent range has a lot of fantastic shades in it, and many of them are pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. Some of their matte are real workhorse kind of shades with soft, smooth, silky, and blendable textures, while their shimmers and pearly shades are very rich in payoff and apply beautifully to the lid. They wear between seven and nine hours on me, depending on the shade and finish.

Stranded

Stranded is a softened, medium gold with warm, orange undertones and a metallic finish. The texture was soft, a little loose and a touch prone to excess in the pan, but it was very easy to apply and blend out on my lid. It had opaque pigmentation that stayed on well for eight hours before fading a bit.

Blaze

Blaze is a soft peach with a subtle, pink-to-peach shifting pearl. It had excellent pigmentation that applied fairly well to bare skin, but the texture seemed to be a little more powdery and not quite as finely-milled as other shades in the palette so it was best over primer. It lasted well for seven and a half hours on me.

Riff

Riff is a medium brown with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. It had excellent color payoff that applied well to bare skin and blended out well nicely. The texture was soft, smooth, and velvety with good substance. It didn’t have noticeable gold flecks in it, though, which this shade has had in the past–even squinting, I’m like, “maybe there are some in the pan” but hardly. The color stayed on well for eight hours before fading a bit.

Good as Gone

Good as Gone is a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. I found that it looked and performed like a matte in practice as the shimmer was very, very fine and subtle. Hell Ride is a muted, medium-dark berry with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage that was builable to full coverage with less than two l ayers. The texture was slightly powdery in the pan and wasn’t quite as finely-milled as the brand’s best matte shades, but it applied nicely and blended out without much effort. I noticed it started to fade on me after eight hours of wear.

Baja is a rich, medium-dark orange with warm, red undertones and a matte finish. The texture felt a little drier and almost chalky, but it had opaque color payoff in a single layer and applied evenly, and I didn’t have any trouble blending it out. Guilt Trip

Guilt Trip is a light-medium plum with moderate, warm undertones and a frosted sheen. The texture was slightly drier and a bit looser, which needed to be applied by pressing and pushing it into the skin and wasn’t as easy to work with as other shimmers in the palette. It had good pigmentation that wore well for eight hours on me.

Wildheart

Wildheart is a bright, medium-dark berry with subtle, cool undertones and a pearly sheen. The eyeshadow had semi-opaque pigmentation that was buildable if applied with a dampened brush or packed on, but the texture had more slip and creaminess to it that I felt made it more prone to sheering out a bit too much along the edges. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably on me.

Jet

Jet is a medium-dark black with subtle, cool undertones and a satin finish. There was just enough shimmer (as fine as it was) to come through a bit on the lid, but I could definitely see it working to add dimension against all the shimmer in the palette. It had rich color coverage that blended out well as the texture was soft without being dusty. The color started to fade on me after eight hours of wear.

Drift is a deep gray with cool, almost purplish, undertones and a metallic sheen. It’s a beautiful palette, and I can definitely see how multiple looks can be made with it, but I’m just not moved by it. I think if I had seen this a year ago, I would have jumped on it. I think I’ve finally started to slowly get over my product junkie ways.

As I suspected, there are a lot of colours I absolutely love but at least 5 that I simply would never wear so this wouldn’t be the best of purchases for me. CHRISTINE (sorry for the caps – just wanted you to see my question) – is the Smog in this palette pretty much identical to the Smog that’s been in other UD palettes or have they re-jigged it a bit (or a lot ) to make it different and unique in this palette?

This isn’t for me, but I can see this being a really good all around palette for some people! If I didn’t already have a good sized collection, I might be tempted with this. It’s good to see UD putting out some good quality permanent stuff. I hope they keep it up instead of flooding the market with inconsistent LE stuff!

So happy this palette has your stamp of approval!! It really spoke to me when I first saw it, I just wanted to make sure it was good quality before I go out and buy it. This baby will definitely be coming to my collection!

Big Sky is certainly gorgeous. I am a little on the fence about this palette as it looks like it would be a good overall palette for Europe in the fall and since it is more of a fall color story it would work nicely. The issue is more about the size with regards to travelling. I don’t use the mirrors in these palettes as I have reached the age where a magnifying mirror is mandatory for makeup application and I know the weight of the mirror would be relatively heavy compared to a palette without the mirror. I also feel like the overall size is a bit bulky. I am going to have to see what other makeup I plan to take and then proceed from there. Nice to see a good palette from UD.

Thanks for the review Christine! I appreciate your honesty and consistency in reviews. No one wants to waste money on subpar products, but at this point I have such a large collection that I don’t like to experiment with questionable formulas/pigmentation (not that UD is). Plus, it’s just more (unnecessary) effort to make them work.

Playland in a palette. What a gift for a relative newbie, or for s.o. who has only self indulged in lower quality. Very versatile; covers most bases. Good job, UD. Not sure that i’ve seen a 21 shade palette before. It IS tempting.

Am I correct in thinking that this is kinda Modern Renaissance on the left, Subculture on the right, and a purple in the middle? That’s a good thing, by the way.

Very happy to see this as a permanent addition. There is something so freeing in knowing that a clock isn’t ticking down on availability. Why I can say that although beautiful I don’t have immediate plans to purchase but just may change my mind in the future.;-)

Agree 100% about loving not having to rush out and get this. It’s something that has my interest but I have so many products to work through. It’s something I might pick up at the Nov Sephora sale next year – no rush!

Tempting. I’m surprised at how few dupes I have of the shades I like. Were I to go for singles of those shades or the dupes, it’d add up quickly to more than the cost of this palette. Decisions decisions.

Genevieve Avatar

A stellar palette, back to the old UD with a wonderful variety of shades. For me, this palette is not really workable as I would only use about half the shades – and those I have many dupes for.
But it still is stunning and you have done a sterling effort to review it so quickly Christine.

Sarah Avatar

I really like the packaging and quality of this. Too many shimmers and dark shades for me personally, but it’s a nice addition to their collection.

MaquiLab Avatar

Am I the only one concerned about the size of each shade? Full spectrum was in the same price range and had TWICE the size of the pans in this one 🙁 What do you think – how many uses can you get out of a pan?

As long as this is truly a permanent product, unlike how UD has been teasing that one had better “get it before it’s gone”, then I will do so in late summer/early autumn. For me, this is not only the perfect travel palette, but a super solid everyday palette, too. And I’ve got a veritable ton of palettes, so that’s saying something as to the versatility and overall great quality contained within this baby!

marija Avatar

Christine, would you recommend this or the beached palette? I feel like there’s some similar shades, or at least enough that I could return the beached one and get this instead 😛

Christine Avatar

It’s really about what palette you’d use more? Is it worth the extra cost for this palette? They’re both nice palettes so it’s more important with respect to which one you’d use more often, whether you have any preference for palette size, etc.

Hénomis Avatar

That’s what I was wondering as well, but the Born to Run palette being more versatile than the Beached, I figured it’d be more worth it to get the former – plus I could get it with a 30% discount ^^

I like this palette a lot. It’s not one and done for me—I still need a cream matte (MAC’s Blanc Type for me), and not enough light shades, but very, very nice. I think it may very well be a complete palette for darker skin tones than mine. Big Sky is gorgeous with my green eyes and a dark blue liner.

WARPAINTandUnicorns Avatar

Same on MAC’s Blanc Type/ Loreal Paris Beach but that with me and all palettes because I’m so pale.

REALLY want it but I’m going to be smart and try it out in person first. But I see a lot of pop of colour shades I would reach for but since it permanent I will want to get this on sale or with Shoppers Drug Mart points 😉

Erin Avatar

I have so many palletes and only want to get 1 for the next few mos.. torn between this or an ABH palette (I still can’t believe I don’t own 1), but trying to decide between Soft Glam, Norvina, or this…

Mariella Avatar

I finally broke down and bought this palette, mostly because I was experiencing that “FOMO” sensation in a way that I rarely do. To my absolute surprise, I am really enjoying it. I think the fact that it’s autumn means that many of the colours I mightn’t have worn in July have a real appeal to me now (though there are still 3 or 4 shades I’ll probably never even touch). Radio, which I thought would look murky and unflattering on me, is so lovely paired with Ignite in the middle of my lid and Radio on the inner and outer third. I’m seriously moving out of my comfort zone “rut”.

Meg Avatar

I mean, do we even have the same palette? I’m not gonna lie, I bought it partially because I trust your reviews so much, and I’m really dissapointed 🙁 I don’t know if there is something wrong with my Born To Run, but only six shades are decent ( breakaway, stranded, blaze, good as gone, ignite, double life) and the rest are lightly pigmented color mists, good for wearing at the office. And the still shot and hell ride are hardly visible while applied with finger, not to mention brush. I tried primer potion, concealer, wet brush, wet sponge, paint pot, generic silicone eyshadow base and still even Sleek eyeshadows gave easily more opacity than theese :<

Christine Avatar

I’d definitely return it if it’s not performing well for you! I didn’t have any of those issues – the swatches here are without primer, my eye looks are without primer. In general, I’ve seen raves for this palette within the community – basically making it seem like one of UD’s best palettes in years.

Meg Avatar

Yeah, I love US returning policy, but basically I live in Poland, so I can’t return anything if it’s opened and used, no matter if it doesn’t work or I’m allergic to it or basically stupid and bought not the item I wanted. Bummer, I know 😉

Anyway, thanks for answering me <3
