Melt Cosmetics Gemini Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Gemini
Melt Cosmetics Gemini 10-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($58.00 for 0.66 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette featuring shades of brown and green with eight mattes and two shimmers. The palette was good overall except Gemini, a sparkly copper, was terrible, which really brought down the overall score of the palette–from ~91% to ~87%. Having tried some of the brand’s shimmer/metallic shades in their other offerings, I have no idea what went wrong, and it’s not like a sparkly/metallic copper is difficult to do as dupes abound. I hope the brand will reconsider bringing it back or perhaps offering the palette in two stacks (I feel the palette divides pretty nicely into two stacks of five), though the green-half is definitely the less dupable side.

Luna
Luna is a soft, peachy brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was fantastic, while the consistency was soft and blendable with a touch of powderiness in the pan. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading a bit.

Gemini
Gemini is a medium, reddish-copper with a sparkly, metallic finish. The texture was dry and chunky, which resulted in sheerer coverage that was dismal when applied with a brush, still disappointing with a dampened brush, and somehow managed to be sub-par when applied with fingertips. It had a ton of fallout and poor adhesion to the lid, which made for terrible wear (six hours with continuous fallout).

Lorelei
Lorelei is a medium, orange-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly, and initially, I had concerns about it potentially darkening unevenly as that occurred on my arm, but I didn’t experience that on the lid and tried it a few times just to be sure. It was also just fine over an eyeshadow primer. The texture was soft, velvety, and blendable with a touch of powderiness in the pan. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me.

Polkadot
Polkadot is a medium brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It was intensely pigmented paired with a smooth, soft consistency that wasn’t too firmly nor too softly pressed, so it picked up well with a brush, applied and adhered well to bare skin, and blended out with little effort. It lasted nicely for eight and a half hours on me.

Cupcake
Cupcake is a medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It was richly pigmented with a soft, more substantial texture that was a little powdery in the pan, but it applied well and blended out better than I anticipated, as I noticed it seemed to absorb any natural oils on my skin (which can often result in difficult blending). It wore well for eight hours on before fading noticeably.

Bonnie
Bonnie is a deep black with a mostly matte finish. It had opaque color payoff in a single layer with a soft, velvety texture that was slightly powdery in the pan and definitely benefited from a light tap to minimize fallout. Leo
Leo is a medium-dark green with subtle, warm olive undertones and a matte finish. It had a grainier texture that was harder to apply without a moderate amount of fallout during application, even after tapping away excess prior to trying it out on my lid. Though it seemed pigmented, it translated to more semi-opaque, buildable coverage in practice. Aside from the fallout, it was actually easy to apply and blend out, but I was surprised it didn’t have a more finely-milled texture. This shade stayed on for eight and a half hours before fading slightly.

Aww, it’s a shame that copper shade was crappy! But all things considered, this is still a really interesting palette!
Isn’t it bizarre that the very shade that Melt named this palette after is a complete FAIL? Oh well, at least I’ve got dupes galore for most shades in it, so I’m good. Thank you so much for reviewing this palette so quickly, as I know that many have been excited for it!
I am wearing this right now, and I truly do love this palette. Gemini (shadow) is pretty disappointing, but I know enough tricks that I can get it to work, but it is a really difficult shadow that I honestly would end up reaching for a dupe. It reminds me of the flaky shadows in the Sephora Pro palettes that were released last year the ones that were supposed to be shadow “toppers,” I haven’t tried it like that yet, but I may give it a whirl. But other than that shadow, it’s a really nice and cohesive palette.
IMO, it’s missing a deep, blackened green to do a deep, smoky green eye. I know you can just do that by mixing the black and one of greens together, but a deep forest green would have been nice. And it’s also missing a light metallic green shadow to use as an inner corner highlight. Something like Electric, from Subculture, would have been perfect in this palette. I used Electric in my inner corner and it pulled the entire look together. With those two shades, the palette would have been pretty perfect.
I am in love with this palette. I think they will restock it once Dana’s palette goes on sale. They are going through the process of releasing one shade per day like they did for this one. I had never bought a Melt product until this palette was released. I bought it specifically for the olive tones and are the only shades I have used thus far. When Goalz is in the sunlight it is one of the prettiest colors I have ever seen. I am super happy the neutrals perform well too. Overall, I am super happy with the palette. I had bought subculture for the greens and we all know how those perform.
I don’t mind Gemini (shadow)! I agree it’s sheer but I didn’t have any problem with fallout. It gave me a nice sparkle all over the lid. Sorry you didn’t enjoy it!
For some reason, I’ve never worn green shadows of clothes for that matter. If I decide to try them, I will begin with a smaller lower cost palette.
They look so good on you that I am tempted.
From the main photo, this looks like it could have an Urban Decay palette. Just my opinion…. BTW, Iām a Gemini…. not sure I would fall in love with this anyway. I have lots of similar shades.
Honestly, Gemini (the shade) being bad isn’t a deal breaker for me! I have tons of shades like that..but the greens? Those would be completely unique.
I thought I would really like this one, but somehow it misses the mark with me – perhaps it is the too many matte finishes or the warmer undertones of many of the shades. There are quite a few unusual ones here.
Thank you for the review Christine.
Give me a stack of Bonnie to Mochi and I will be a happy person.
So glad for your website. I had been wanting to buy this but i have close enough dupes to the colors that i just talked myself out of it. My wallet thanks you!
I’m actually wearing Gemini all over my lid right now.. yes, it is a little difficult to work but I used my fingertip to applied and a little bit of the too faced glitter glue. I has been 4 hours already since I did my makeup and I have no fallout. I really enjoying this palette, but you have to really take your time to build. I’m very gentle with my eye shadows and I honestly don’t mine fallout because I normally do my foundation after. I think it is a beautiful palette, something a little different specially for the greens. =)
Was so interested to see your thoughts on this. Glad you reviewed this company. I agree this would be A- without Gemini. I do not like the stacks at all. Very messy and no matter how careful you are, they get dinged. That’s why I bought this- between the different colors and the fact that’s in a palette, I was in. Hope they release stacks in palette form. I like this palette and colors, but I prefer a little creamier texture. These are a little less so and I think that’s why there’s fallout. I don’t mind fallout if real pigmented and creamy. I’m happy I got this, but I think, for example, Coloured Raine QOH or Anastasia in general is both pigmented and creamier. IMO. And I did find some similarity to Subculture, which I happen to love despite having to be careful with it. Goalz is the star of this show and yes, as has been said, it’s ironic the eponymous shadow is the loser of the bunch. It’s worth getting if they bring it back. I’d love to see a review of Subculture vs. this.
I very nearly bought this, but I was afraid to without a review. I might pick it up if they restock.
I love green, but this particular combo of green and brown says “70’s basement” to me, and not in a good way.
I ordered this because olive green is my favorite color, it was supposedly delivered this past Monday but my apartment office never received it so it was either misdelivered or stolen. I’m so mad and sad! I want to play with these colors so badly.
Oh no!! š
Yeah š I’ve got a lost package report in to USPS, but since their tracking shows they delivered it, I don’t have a lot of hope they’ll give me good news.
Best case scenario is they mis-delivered it and whoever received it returned it. I had that happen a couple years ago and I finally got my package a week or two later.
Greens… the new upcoming trend?
Gorgeous palette! I wouldn’t typically be drawn to this color story but this one’s drawing me in. I would LOVE to have Goalsz, Lorelei & Mochi as singles!!! Ugh…My eyeshadow collection would be completely rounded out with those. š
I LOVE this palette. I agree about the shade Gemini though- what happened??? I feel that a mustard based metallic would have been more unique – if that even exists! I would give every other shade an A, personally I’ve found the greens to be just as good as the warm neutral side.
I’m torn about the new TwentySeven palette- Moxie just looks the BOMB but some of the videos make the palette look boring and brown, but the individuals look beautiful and more ‘rust’ and nuanced.
Thanks as always for the reviews!
A couple shades are patchy and mine arrived with 2 broken pans and fallout everywhere. Still havent heard back from customer service. For the price point, Iām pretty disappointed , I expected better than what I received. The Twenty Seven palette was much better.
I agree 100% with your review. The Gemini shade was wimpy, sheer, messy and by the end of the day it was gone. I am hoping it may get better with subsequent use, as it does appear to pick up better once the top layer is off the pan. The rest of the palette is GORGEOUS and I love the color story. This is the perfect grunge palette. This is what Venus II and Subculture SHOULD have been. I agree with those that said this palette could use another couple shades, tho and for the money I feel w should have had 12. An inner corner highlight would make this palette perfect. I think Leo is very dark on the lid, at least on me and will work for an all-over smokey eye. Mochi, Fire OG and Goalz are so unique. I have nothing like them in my collection. Overall I’m very pleased with this palette and can’t wait to play some more with it.
