Anastasia Vol. 1 Lip Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Vol. 1
Anastasia Vol. 1 Lip Palette ($48.00 for 0.54 oz.) includes 13 distinct hades along with 5 primary colors (which can be used on their own or used to mix with other shades in the palette). The palette also included a dual-ended tool, which had a flat, lip brush on one end and a metal spatula on the other end, and a small mixing palette. The formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” and “long-wearing.” In general, they were fairly pigmented without requiring too much product (though it never felt like I barely needed product either–pigmented but not 150% pigmented, if that makes sense!). They were thin without being clingy, lightly creamy but eventually wore down to a more matte, flat finish (one to two hours). The wear varied from shade to shade–anywhere from three to six hours–and a few were drying, some were slightly drying, and some were non-drying.
Ideally, the palette will suit someone who likes mixing and matching shades, typically uses a lip brush to apply their lip color, and doesn’t need to take their lip color on-the-go. Pro tip: invest in a retractable lip brush, and then put some of the color you’d like to touch-up with later on, retract the brush, and you’ll have at least one application later on. The pans did not seem removable, so the palette itself did not appear to be refillable (and there are no refills sold at this time).
Vol. 1
PPermanent. $48.00.
#1 (Vol. 1)
#1 (Vol. 1) is a dusty, medium coral with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had rich color payoff with a lightly creamy, smooth consistency that applied evenly on the lips. The color pulled into my lip lines slightly after two hours of wear, though the color lasted closer to four and a half hours and was non-drying.

#2 (Vol. 1)
#2 (Vol. 1) is a deep, reddish plum with warmer undertones and a satin finish. The consistency was smooth, creamy without being too slippery, and applied evenly across the lips. The color coverage was opaque, and the formula felt comfortable to wear over the five hours it lasted on me.

#3 (Vol. 1)
#3 (Vol. 1) is a vibrant, medium-dark copper with warm, reddish undertones and a semi-matte finish. It was intensely pigmented, and the color applied extremely well–smooth, even coverage that lasted for five hours on me. The texture was lightly creamy, not too thick or too thin, and sat well on the lips, while the formula was non-drying.

#4 (Vol. 1)
#4 (Vol. 1) is a muted, medium-dark brown with warmer, rosy undertones and a satin finish. The pigmentation was excellent, and the formula went on evenly and smoothly. It had a creamy texture with a light-medium weight feel, so it didn’t feel clingy but didn’t slide around too much either. This one felt like it had more body compared to some of the other shades in the palette, which made it more comfortable to wear. It wore well for four and a half hours and felt non-drying.

#5 (Vol. 1)
#5 (Vol. 1) is a slightly muted, medium-dark plum with cool undertones and a matte finish. This shade had more of a matte finish right after application compared to most shades in the palette. It had rich, opaque pigmentation that applied evenly and smoothly, while the lipstick felt smooth without being clingy and lasted for five and a half hours. This one seemed slightly drying over time.

#6 (Vol. 1)
#6 (Vol. 1) is a dark, chocolaty brown with warm, red undertones and a satin finish. It had opaque pigmentation that applied evenly and smoothly across the lips. The consistency was creamy and thick enough that it spread without difficulty but did not feel slippery on the lips. The color wore well for six hours and left a subtle stain behind, while the formula was slightly drying.

#7 (Vol. 1)
#7 (Vol. 1) is a bright, medium orange with warm, reddish undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had intense coverage, and it was one of the more pigmented shades in the palette (I needed to use noticeably less than the “norm” for the palette). The texture was smooth, lightly creamy, and comfortable to wear over the five and a half hours it lasted.

#8 (Vol. 1)
#8 (Vol. 1) is a muted, medium-dark brown with subtly warm, rosy undertones and a semi-matte finish. The pigmentation was fantastic, as it yielded full color coverage that was even and smooth with little work. The lipstick felt lightly creamy going on, so it was easy to spread across the lips and fairly comfortable to wear. This shade wore nicely for five hours and was slightly drying.

#11 (Vol. 1)
#11 (Vol. 1) is a muted, medium brown with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had rich, opaque color coverage that applied decently, but this shade had a thicker consistency and a tendency to sink into my lip lines (even initially). It lasted for three and a half hours and was slightly drying over time.

#12 (Vol. 1)
#12 (Vol. 1) is a vibrant, medium-dark pinky red with cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had good color payoff, but it was–surprisingly–not opaque like the majority of the shades in the palette. It went on decently, but there was something about the texture that made it prone to emphasizing the texture of my lips a lot more than other shades in the palette. The color wore well for six hours, left a pink stain behind, but it was fairly drying over time.

Primary #1 (Vol. 1)
Primary #1 (Vol. 1) is a bright, neutral white with a satin finish. It had good pigmentation, but the consistency was a little drier–almost powdery–though it spread without much effort. The texture had a tendency to sink into my lip lines. For the type of color, it applied quite well, but there was room for improvement still. It lasted for three hours on its own and was drying.

Primary #4 (Vol. 1)
Primary #4 (Vol. 1) is a bright, medium yellow with warm, orange undertones and a lightly glossy finish. The texture was more slippery compared to other shades in the palette, so the color was harder to apply and keep in place–there was visible streaking, and the moment I pressed my lips together, it looked even worse as the color moved around. There was some color that pulled into lip lines, too. This shade wore well for four and a half hours and was neither drying nor hydrating.

#13 (Vol. 1)
#13 (Vol. 1) is a blackened plum with berryish undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly full coverage, though it seemed slightly lighter and less intense on the lips than it did in the pan. This shade had a more emollient consistency, so it slid around slightly, though I did not experience any feathering or bleeding when I wore it. The color stayed on nicely for six hours, left a stain behind, and was slightly drying.

This looks like a great palette, but I’m going to skip. This seems like more of a pro item to me. Lots of fun, though!
Yeah, it’s either for pros or a consumer who happens to prefer lip palettes over tubes!
The creative side of me wants this palette to play, the practical side says not a chance. I like lipstick tubes/pots for portability. There is the argument you can scoop out bits, mix, and put in a little container for touchups on the go, but I know me and I know I’m invariably running late and would rather throw a tube in my bag.
Haha, that’s exactly how I feel! It would be fun to play but would I ever do it, really?
That retractable lip brush tip is amazing, Christine! Thank you!
No problem! Can’t take credit for it – have heard it for years (no idea who originated it, though) 🙂
Little old ladies way back in the day, I think! My Mom always did that, especially up until the the 1980’s. She’d have turned 92 if she had lived another 10 years, hence my term “little old ladies”!
Looks like a nice palette. I am not really into the mixing of my own shades of lipstick and wouldn’t want to spend time mixing until I got something that I like and then probably not ever being able to get that color again, LOL. I am an immediate satisfaction kind of person so give me a good old bullet lip product and I am happy.
Totally understand that feeling, Deborah! 😉
That was my first thought when I initially saw this palette. I’d create my all time favorite, then forget how I did it.
This palette really lends itself to one being able to customize their own unique shades to their hearts content! Very interesting! Not so sure I’ll buy it myself, but I could definitely see a MUA having this in their kit.
Yep, it is perfect for mixing!
That looks like the best black lipstick I’ve seen! This palette is still a pass for me though, I really don’t need 18 more shades of lipstick, and I’m not much into mixing.
The black lipstick is very pigmented!
Wow! I think I could have a lot of fun with this. It would even be fun to experiment with the shades that are less flattering on me, seeing how mixing them with different primaries changes them. The blue and the black are super-gorgeous, as are the purple and berry shades. I wonder, though, how well the white would work as a mixing shade, as that is primarily how I would use it… the yellow, too.
This is the perfect palette to play with!
I love the quality of most, sad the yellow didn’t match up to the others. If I was a pro, I’d do it.
I was hopeful the yellow would perform better on its own, too!
#2 seems pretty unique… that said, I have lip palettes that I don’t even use that much. This one is a pass for me.
Easy skip 🙂
I’ll be looking into this when I get my MUA kit in September!!!
Yayy!
Yeah, I’m really on the fence…. should I or shouldn’t I. I like to play, but I’m usually rushed. The tip for the retractable lip brush is cool. I’ll probably cave I usually do.
Do you think you’d use it more than a few times a week?
Probably to begin with because it would be fun to play with, then I would lose interest because it would be a pain because it won’t fit in my purse, then it would sit and collect dust for a while until I picked it up again. But the temptation is so much…
That black! I love it. So rich.
I really do like this palette and I’m thinking of getting it, not that I really like lip palettes, and it’s too big to carry around, but it looks like so much fun.
And there’s the black!
I’ll just have to check how much it’ll cost here, and decide after that. Stupid low buy, or rather stupid all other things one must pay.
The black is intense!
Generally, the shades are beautiful colours – ones that most could/would wear and the quality is certainly there.
But lip palettes are not my thing and I don’t think this would be that convenient to use.
Totally understand, Genevieve!
I really shouldn’t care care cause I don’t need it at all… but that black is the prettiest black lipstick I think I’ve ever seen!
Aww!
I’ve been checking this one out. I do have two Urban Decay lip palettes that I like to use, but of the colors in the UD palettes, I also own tubes of some of my favorites from the palettes, which makes it easy to freshen them up on the go. However, I think I’ll skip this one since I’m not all that motivated to mix new colors, not sure that you can pick up stand alones of each, plus the shade range probably won’t work for me. I like a nice selection of nudes, browns and softer reds/berries (like UD’s Manic, which comes to mind.) I don’t mind some reds and darker colors but I think it’s just too heavy on dark/bright reds and berries for me.
Bummer that this one won’t work! Here’s hoping Vol. 2 is more up your alley!
If you don’t already have a big lippie collection, this would be very economical way of getting lots of lipstick colors, and you might even be able to finish up a pan too! I’m impressed the purple, black, and blue scored so well too
That is a great point!
Apart from the first two shades I probably wouldn’t wear any of these. So easy skip for me.
Why are yellows always so tragic? I love the look of this, and I really enjoy mixing, but I just own waaayyy too much makeup right now.
This looks like a really good mixing palette because there is a version of pretty much all the common lipstick themes, so it would be easy to just adjust them slightly to get something that looks right. (It’s a lot less of a commitment than something like MUFE’s Flash Colors where you have to start fairly far away and stumble towards what you’re looking for -not making enough and being unable to quite recreate it is a common hazard for that kit.) I kind of wish this came out a few years ago. My lipstick collection might be more manageable if it had!
