Urban Decay Vice Metal Meets Matte Vice Lipstick Palette Review, Photos, Swatches

Urban Decay Vice Metal Meets Matte Vice Lipstick Palette

Vice Metal Meets Matte

Urban Decay Vice Metal Meets Matte Vice Lipstick Palette ($35.00 for 0.24 oz.) contains 12 lipsticks–six shimmery shades, six mattes–with a mix of new, exclusive shades and ones from the permanent range. It includes a retractable lip brush. I think it’s a nice way to try a lot of shades from the Vice formula, but I recommend thinking critically about how you use your lip products–some use a lip brush regularly and won’t mind that step while others like to keep their lip color on them throughout the day and carrying around a whole palette may or may not be feasible. The formula, overall, feels a little less dense and creamy compared to the full-sized versions (when available) but have similar coverage, wear, and application.

Value

A full-sized Vice Lipstick retails for $17.00 and contains 0.11 oz. or costs $154.55/oz. The palette contains $37.09 worth of product.

Urban Decay Banger Vice Lipstick

Banger

Banger is a purpled berry with lighter purple and silver sparkle. It had medium, somewhat buildable coverage with a thin, almost balm-like texture was it had some slip but felt thin once applied to the lips. I could feel the texture and grit of the sparkle due to the thinner overlal texture, which may or may not be a deal-breaker for someone. It applied fairly evenly but some color pulled into my lip lines. It wore well for four and a half hours and was neither drying nor hydrating.

Formula Overview

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is available in six finishes, which are primarily distinguished by level of sheen, shimmer content, and coverage. I didn't notice any scent or taste. Mega Mattes are the thinnest and have the most “cling” as they are drier and more matte (but most are semi-matte and not a totally flat matte) and can be drying, though they are longer-wearing.

Comfort Mattes are creamier, a little denser, with richer color payoff on average (they are the most pigmented out of the finishes), and have a satin finish that is fairly comfortable to wear, usually lightly hydrating, and longer-wearing.

Creams are usually softer and creamier, though not too soft (they don’t mush or break from the base easily), with some being tackier and stiffer in the tube until they warm up against the lips; they have good color payoff, are hydrating, and are comfortable to wear but have more typical wear (four to six hours–six hours for deeper/richer shades like a red).

Sheers and Sheer Shimmers have a more balm-like consistency that feels a little thinner but is wetter/more emollient than Mega Mattes, so ultimately, they feel quite different applied; they have sheerer coverage, though more semi-sheer to semi-opaque than very sheer, and have the shortest wear time at two to fours with light hydration.

Metallized is the most shimmery of the finishes, though some of the other finishes have shades that are actually as shimmery (to me), but the Metallized formula has a thinner, more emollient base that isn’t as dense or as cream-like as the Creams; they feel more like the Sheers but a bit heavier and more pigmented (but seem to run semi-opaque to opaque, not always fully opaque) with average wear (four to five hours), light hydration.

Urban Decay Amulet Vice Lipstick

Amulet

Amulet is a medium plum with warm undertones and fine pearl. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a lightweight, slightly emollient texture that spread easily across the lips but wasn’t quite as hydrating or as glossy as the full-sized version. The lipstick lasted for four and a half hours and was lightly hydrating on me.

Urban Decay Fast Talk Vice Lipstick

Fast Talk

Fast Talk is a medium-dark, reddish plum with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied evenly to the lips. The consistency was thin, slightly clingy but not actually drying, and spread across the lips evenly. The color stayed on well for four and a half hours.

Urban Decay Big Bang Vice Lipstick

Big Bang

Big Bang is a medium pink with subtle, cool undertones and light and medium pink sparkle. It had medium coverage, which applied evenly across the lips so it looked almost like a stain with a glossy finish. The texture was smooth, lightweight, and thin but not clingy. It wore well for four hours on me and was lightly hydrating.

Mad

Mad is a medium-dark purple with subtle, warm pink undertones and fine sparkle. It had semi-opaque color payoff that applied fairly evenly, though there was room for improvement in the application. Urban Decay CSB Vice Lipstick

CSB

CSB is a deep plum with subtle, cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff in a single layer, which wasn’t too buildable from there. The texture was smooth, creamy without being heavy nor was it too thin. It applied evenly with slight color pulling into my lip lines over time. The color stayed on well for five hours and was non-drying.

Urban Decay Backtalk Vice Lipstick

Backtalk

Backtalk is a muted, medium pink with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had good pigmentation–just shy of full coverage–with a lightly creamy texture that applied evenly on the lips. The lipstick wore well for four and a half hours on me and was non-drying.

Urban Decay Double Team Vice Lipstick

Double Team

Double Team is a bright, light-medium cotton candy pink with cool, blue undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff that went on evenly and smoothly across the lips. The consistency was lightweight, lightly creamy, and comfortable to apply and to wear. The color lasted for four and a half hours on me with a lightly moisturizing formula.

Urban Decay Shallow Vice Lipstick

Shallow

Shallow is a light-medium lavender with subtle, cool undertones and a satin finish. It had good pigmentation that applied evenly across the lips. The consistency was smooth, lightweight, and had just enough slip to feel comfortable and non-clingy. It stayed on well for four and a half hours on me and was lightly moisturizing.

Urban Decay 714 Vice Lipstick

714

714 is a medium red with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage with a stiffer, denser texture that worked well as a poured formula, as a lip brush applied it evenly and smoothly with little effort to achieve crisp lines. The formula felt clingy on the lips, so it wasn’t my favorite texture to wear. It wore well for six hours and was slightly drying.

Why does every lip palette that UD puts out have to include Big Bang and 714? I can’t wear Barbie pinks like Big Bang, and I already have a full-size and more samples of 714 than I’ll ever use in my lifetime. And this time they added a matte bubblegum pink, which looks good on maybe five people on Earth, and which I can closely dupe by smearing Pepto Bismol liquid on my lips.

That in mind, the question I’m asking myself is whether or not Mad and Shallow are enough to redeem the palette.

Seraphine Avatar

I love UD Vice lipstick, and there are a lot of wearable shades here for me, but there are too many negatives. I like to carry my lipstick with me, so a palette is not feasible. The coverage of many of the shimmers looks a bit dicey. Backtalk is the most gorgeous shade in the palette, but I already own the regular lipstick. An easy pass for me.

On the bright side, very cool eye look, Christine!

Nancy T Avatar

Even though I do see some gorgeous shades in this palette, I believe the sheer size of it would make it totally impractical for me to lug around in my purse. That, plus my having dupes for roughly half of its shades, convinces me that I don’t need it.
One shade I love is Tame. But I’m thinking I can get very close to that shade by mixing my MAC Spirit with a bit of something warmer and darker!
(Yep! I read the tip about mixing to get a dupe on your Anti-Haul-iday post! Funny…I used to mix stuff all the time)

I can imagine how busy you must be! It’s insane with release after release for the holidays!!! If by chance you ever do I’m there for it lol!! Thanks for all you do!! I read all of your reviews so I value what you say!!! Thanks again!!!

Miska Avatar

Personally I detest lip palettes like this. I just find them too much of a hassle and have a hard time holing onto the tiny lip brush. I’d much rather they release a mini set for this. And i’m over companies putting the same damn shades in every new release. I think this is something more suited to an MUA. I prefer to swipe a bullet over my lips and go. The only thing worse, imho, is a potted lip product!
