Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Eyeshadow Palette

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Eyeshadow Palette ($54.00 for 0.48 oz. ) is a new, permanent neutral-hued palette that features 12 shades with one shade that’s shimmery and 11 that are touted as matte (a few have faint sparkle/shimmer in the pan but none of them looked shimmery on the skin to my eye). I don’t have an exact release date, just that it will be debuting in September and will be available at all retailers that sell Urban Decay (but I’d expect it to launch on Urban Decay’s website first).

If you’re unfamiliar with Urban Decay’s eyeshadow formula, it is described as having a “velvety texture,” “rich color,” “serious staying power and blendability.” Some the brand’s best mattes are ones like Riff, which really did combine high color payoff with a silky, smooth, and blendable texture that applies well on bare skin as well as with traditional eye primer, but other times, their matte formula has left something to be desired, where the texture has been thin, chalky, dusty, and/or less pigmented.

Naked Ultimate Basics sits somewhere in-between for me overall; the texture is nowhere near as smooth or as finely-milled as I have seen from the brand, but it isn’t as dusty nor as dry as the shades in Naked Smoky. The press was firm enough that the majority of shades didn’t kick up too much excess product in the pan, had decent pigmentation, wear, and blendability, but there were some troublemakers (Instinct, Lethal, Magnet) that were harder to work with, even over primer. Most of the matte shades darkened slightly when I applied them to my skin compared to how they appeared in their pans.

Blow is a light, peachy-beige with warm undertones and a pearly shimmer. It had good pigmentation paired with a soft, blendable texture that wasn’t too firm or too soft in the pan. The color lasted for eight hours. Tom Ford Beauty Pink Glow #1 (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (95% similar). MAC Preferred Blonde (LE, $21.00) is lighter (95% similar). Nudie is a light-medium peach-beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was slightly dusty and thinner, which made it more prone to sheering out on the skin. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that was buildable to opaque coverage with two layers. On me, it wore well for seven and a half hours before fading. Laura Mercier Bone (PiP, $23.00) is cooler (95% similar). ColourPop No Worries (PiP, $4.50) is brighter (95% similar). Viseart Honoree (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Commando is a muted, medium-dark beige with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had a very soft, smooth feel to it that blended out nicely on the skin but didn’t lose its intensity immediately. This shade had good color coverage and lasted for eight hours. ColourPop Hanky Panky (P, $6.00) is warmer (95% similar). Giorgio Armani Nude Smoke (24) (DC, $39.00) is warmer (95% similar). Tarte Hearts & Crafts (LE, ) is brighter (90% similar). Clinique Nude Rose (PiP, $15.00) is lighter (85% similar). Hourglass Infinity #2 (PiP, ) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Tarte View from the Taupe (LE, ) is darker, warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Tempted is a medium-dark taupe with a hint of rosiness and warmer undertones paired with a matte finish. The texture was dustier, and it was harder to apply this one evenly without the use of primer underneath. It had semi-opaque color payoff and started to fade after seven and a half hours of wear. Guerlain Les Cendres #2 (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). Too Faced Chocolate Syrup (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). KVD Beauty Heaven Knows (LE, ) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Haux (P, $17.00) is cooler (95% similar). Too Faced Almond Truffle (PiP, $16.00) is cooler (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Dusty Lilac (LE, $22.00) is cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay DTF (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). Tarte For Realism (LE, ) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Instinct is a muted, medium-dark rosy mauve with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. This shade had a much firmer press to it, which made it hard to get the product out of it and resulted in semi-sheer coverage. It didn’t blend well, and I couldn’t really get the color to build-up much either, as it did not respond well to layering. What little I managed to apply lasted for seven hours from what I could tell. LORAC Rose Bud (PiP, $19.00) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Tickety Boo (LE, $17.00) is darker (95% similar). Laura Mercier Cashmere (PiP, $23.00) is warmer (95% similar). Givenchy Rose Dentelle (3) (P, $23.00) is warmer (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Otherwise (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Lethal is a deep plum with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, while the consistency was lightly dusty but not too thin and blended out decently. It would be easier to work with over a primer, but it was manageable on bare skin. I found this shade to be buildable to opaque coverage in two to three layers. It wore well for eight hours before creasing slightly. Tarte Power Plum (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). ColourPop Doe-a-Deer (LE, $6.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Sydney Grace Brilliant Realm (PiP, $5.25) is lighter (95% similar). Ciate Day Dream (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). Tarte My Own Cotes de Rhone (LE, ) is more muted (90% similar). Natasha Denona Aubergine (24V) (PiP, $29.00) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Marquee (PiP, $4.50) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. Pre-Game is a light, buttery yellow with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff, though it was not fully opaque, that applied evenly and blended out without any trouble. The texture was soft, a bit powdery, but it sat well on the skin and did not look dry. The color started to fade after seven hours of wear. MAC Real Fantasy (LE, $17.00) is lighter (95% similar). LORAC Custard (LE, $19.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). Viseart Beurre (Warm Mattes #1) (P, ) is lighter (95% similar). Buxom Mix & Mingle (P, $12.00) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Extra Bitter is a medium-dark, coppery-brown with warm, reddish undertones and a matte finish. The texture was smooth, finely-milled, and blendable; it wasn’t too powdery nor was it too firm in the pan. It was one of the best-performing shades in the palette. The pigmentation was fantastic, and it wore well for a solid eight hours. ColourPop Popular Demand (DC, $4.50)(100% similar). ColourPop Macchiato (LE, $4.50) is darker (95% similar). Huda Beauty Coco (Remastered) (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). MAC Bougie Babe (LE, $17.00) is warmer (95% similar). Sydney Grace Chocolate Raspberry Fudge (P, $5.25) is cooler (95% similar). Faith is a soft, medium-dark brown with warm, yellowy undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow has a soft, silky consistency that was smooth and easy to work with on bare skin, as it applied with rich coverage and blended out nicely. Lockout is a dark brown with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish. It is just slightly darker and less yellow-based compared toFaith (but I do think they are too similar to have in the same palette–they could have made this one darker or much cooler to add more differentiation). The texture was soft, blendable, and silky without being powdery or dusty. It had good pigmentation and applied evenly, while the color lasted well for eight hours. Too Faced Romance (PiP, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Faith (PiP, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). Viseart Mocha (Warm Mattes #11) (P, ) is darker (95% similar). Magnet is a muted, dark gray with a hint of purplish undertones paired with a mostly matte finish. You can see subtle sparkle in the pan close-up, but it did not translate onto the lid. The texture was thin, drier, and dusty, which caused it to sheer out and apply unevenly. This shade was difficult to use alone; it was better used to darken other shades, as it just looked uneven and patchy alone. It lasted for seven hours on me. MAC Interior Life (LE, $17.00) is darker (95% similar). Fenty Beauty Shisha Smoke (PiP, ) is cooler (90% similar). NARS Delphes #2 (DC, $25.00) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Blackjack is a deep black with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish. The texture was soft, a little dusty, and fairly blendable, though it is not the easiest black eyeshadow to work with. I liked it best applied in sheerer layers to minimize any unevenness/patchiness that might occur. The application issues with this one seemed mostly resolved if used over a primer as well. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably. Too Faced Stiletto (LE, $16.00)(100% similar). Laura Mercier Noir (PiP, $23.00) is cooler (95% similar). L'Oreal Noir C'est Noir (P, $5.99) is warmer (95% similar). Make Up For Ever M100 Black (DC, $21.00) is warmer (95% similar). Tarte Fashionista (LE, )(100% similar). I sympathize with the neural loving folks who are disappointed in the low rating this palette got. Not my cup of tea but I feel for those who anticipated that this would be a good palette.

MichelleChefNYC Avatar

Wow, way too many clunkers to consider this, what a disappointing show for an UD naked palette… I’m kind of glad because I could use an excuse not to purchase another Naked palette at this point. I have dupes upon dupes for these colors, but the lure of a palette for travel is always strong for me lol. You still managed to get a very pretty look out of this Christine, it looks lovely as always!

AB Avatar

Only Extra Bitter speaks to me, and I won’t buy a palette for one shade, so it’s a pass. I really hope UD releases Extra Bitter as a single someday.

Katherine T. Avatar

Yep, not surprised. Wasn’t too impressed by the sneak peek. Many of the swatches looked sheer, like DS quality, will never make it on my oily lids, even with primer. At least 3 of the light tan shades will all look the same on my lids, Faith is a 95% dupe of Lockout (WTH?) , and what’s up with Magnet? It looks like another MAC Carbon 🙁 $54 for this? Uh no thanks. The only shade I like is Extra Bitter, but thank goodness I have Realgar as dupe in ABH Modern Renaissance. Between that palette and MAC C’Est Chic, I have almost all of these shades covered, and both kits scored much higher than this, with better color mix too

YIKES what a underperforming palette. Magnet is just rough…I didn’t plan on getting this and this assured me that I didn’t have put it on the list anyway. Their naked palettes never quite work on my dark skin.

Mo Merrell Avatar

My everyday nude palette has been the Too Faced Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar Palette. It has just the right nudes for my skin tone. I use it almost every day even as just a base color or main colors.

Nancy T Avatar

This palette is a huge question mark for me. I do have that new MUFE Artist Palette #4, ABH Modern Renaissance, plus a bunch of Lorac mattes in the Pro #1 and MAC Pro pan singles.
Combining that with the rather weak performance on several shades has me leaning towards “no”.
Disappointing because I was kind of excited for this one. ?

Christina D. Avatar

I’m still looking forward to getting my hands on this and playing with it — I will make it work!!! I will definitely be adding it to my collection the moment I can purchase it.

Nicole D Avatar

Imagine my disappointment Christine! I’ve been waiting for this all-matte palette and such a letdown.

MAC c’est chic palette is not available in Canada. Tarte matte palettes do not perform well. So I had such high hopes for this UD palette.

Your eyes look gorgeous btw (as always) :).

If you can swing an eye looks as great as that, I think it’s worth buying. I won’t be buying this because of the size, actually. I *love* my two Naked Basics palettes and half the reason is because they’re so small (but mighty) and fit in a little box on my tiny vanity where I keep some “every day” things. I don’t have room for anymore palettes 🙁 . I almost wish they had split the top row from the bottom row and released two palettes in the original packaging.

Such a shame about those two Instinct Magnet. Those are two of the shades I would really be drawn to the most, so I guess that makes this a no-go for me.

Christine, you haven’t reviewed any of It Cosmetics’ shadow palettes, have you? I love the ones I have. I’d be interested to see what you think.

Interestingly enough, every time I start thinking I might purchase one of these they get terrible reviews for the colors I’m most interested in.

I’m glad I wasn’t hyped for this. The packaging is lovely and of course Extra Bitter had my eye (shades like that are always my weakness), but I just wasn’t feeling it, which is a relief. I’ve spent enough money on eyeshadow palettes lately. ?

I can’t thank you enough, Christine, for this review. I was all in, now I am happily all out. Just got the KVD Shade and Light palette, and I can’t believe how well those neutrals suit me. Blowing my mind how happy I am.

The early pix of this palette got me weirdly invested in like “I have to have it.” And I’m not the kind of person who needs a gazillion options, so I’m good with a capital “P” pass on this. Those dark colors that need to be close to perfect to work well and aren’t = deal breaker.

This is the best, most in-depth review I have seen of this palette. You put in so much work! Thank you for helping me make a decision on whether to buy this palette or not. I will always check with you before I buy any palettes again!

It’s pretty sad overall considering the quality of their mattes in the past realeases. So many B’s in combination with 2 duds bring the average down so hard and I can tell they look slightly sheer in pigment even with working with them.

Makes me want to get Beauty Treats 12 Color Matte Eyeshadow in Neutral online some how more.

Kat Von D’s SUCCUBUS reminds me of Extra Bitter but I guess it warmer/browner in comparison to E.B.

I kind of want to get it just to do a comparison of these two palettes but I don’t want to spend probably $70CAN on it. Hope I can get it in a swap 🙁

BF disappointment. But not really. Only 2 I don’t have (better) dupes for. MUFE teak remains on the wish list for next year, yellow would not get much love/use. The very idea that magnet was bettered by a C rated cool matte pretty much says it all……and I’m thrilled to be able to write off another UD palette. Your education of the readership is working. As usual, you make great looks from some fairly mediocre product. At least the 20 year reissues are better. Easy pass. $ saved for bijoux.

This palette looked to me exactly like Stila’s Eyes Are the Window palette in the Mind colorway at first glance! I’m surprised that they would come out with something this similar, but then again it is true that the UD Naked “brand” probably has a larger following than Stila’s eyeshadows…

Meh. I think I’m done with the matte shadow palettes. But your review is comprehensive and in-depth as always, Christine 🙂 And I agree with the others; as I was looking at the swatches I was wondering, “What kind of interesting look will Christine be able to create with this boring palette” lol…but you did it! The glittery pink liner on the lower lash line is FABULOUS <3

I was so hoping this would be amazing. I feel like I am missing a lot of mid tone neutrals in my collection. Since this is slightly a bust, who do you feel makes the best mattes? I would prefer something I can buy in singles (like ABH, MAC, Inglot, MUFE, etc)

I already have the Stila Eyes are the Window palette in Mind and find that the shades look pretty similar to the photos above and am hoping the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Eyeshadow Palette would be like Mind but with an upgrade in shadow quality. From the previous posts it seems some of the Urban Decay shades are problematic. Could you please tell me how the 2 palettes compare in terms of quality?

Wanted to buy this as my first palette ever, but after reading reviews I’ll pass. Probably get single eyeshadows from makeup geek instead.

Or maybe anyone can recommend a good basic matte palette for pale skin? 😉

Indre Avatar

Will have to look in to these in depth, haven’t caught my eyes before 🙂 Thinking aboug Meet Matte Trimony and in love with the new Anastasia palette “modern renaissance”, but it’s not really a basic I guess 🙂
