Too Faced Then and Now Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Then and Now
Too Faced Then and Now Cheers to 20 Years Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.80 oz.) is exactly what I’d expect from the brand to celebrate their 20th anniversary. From the types of colors to the finishes to the color scheme and to the packaging, it’s so on-brand that it really seemed fitting for this particular milestone. I thought the concept was interesting–taking their original 10 eyeshadows and then updating them–but what I’ll say about that is I think I’d rather have seen them update the original shades (better formulations, slight tweaks for a modern interpretation) and then pairing them with 10 shades worked with them. Instead, the palette offers a distorted mirror image of the original 10, and I felt like it made the palette a little less cohesive than it should be for having 22 shades (I was definitely longing for some more satin/matte, deeper shades).
Overall, the quality was better than expected; better than the average for Too Faced and their limited edition palettes compared to the last few years (though I’ve seen some improvement over the last year here). There are several glittery shades, which suffer from your typical glitter eyeshadow problems, like glitter not binding with the base, fallout (during and after application), and so on. If you’re someone who often users fingertips or dampened brushes (or a glitter adhesive), I suspect you’ll be just fine working with this palette. Also, the palette is rather over-sized, so keep that in mind for organization and traveling purposes, but it certainly contains a ton of product for your money.

Twinkie
Twinkie is a medium-dark gold with warm, yellow undertones and a metallic sheen. Surprisingly, it was rather stiff and drier in the pan, which resulted in semi-opaque coverage and an uneven application that really took some buffing and blending to appear even on my skin. It ended up being more efficient to use it with a dampened brush to get improved coverage and help smooth out the product on my skin. On its own, it lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Pixie Dust
Pixie Dust is a soft, pale green with strong, warm undertones and flecks of chartreuse micro-glitter over a metallic sheen. Like other glittery shades in the palette, the glitter did not bind well with the base, which resulted in very little (or none!) translating onto the lid. This worked well in the sense that there was no glitter fallout to contend with, but if you were hoping for glitter-packed lids, then you’ll find it lacking. The base color had opaque coverage that adhered well to bare skin and stayed on well for eight hours.

Dirt Bag
Dirt Bag is a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling sheen. It had more of a pearl finish with faint micro-glitter strewn throughout, so it was one of the “less” shimmery shades in the palette (which has quite a few glittery/metallic shades). It was richly pigmented with a smooth, almost cream-like texture that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out effortlessly. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me; there did not seem to be much in the way of fallout, likely due to little of the glitter adhering in the first place.

Zsa Zsa
Zsa Zsa is a medium pink with subtle, warm undertones and a glittery, frosted sheen. It had semi-sheer coverage, which did not build up well without a primer underneath it. The consistency was thinner, dustier, and drier compared to the majority of shades in the palette, and this resulted in a moderate amount of fallout during application. This shade stayed on well for six and a half hours on me.

Trixie
Trixie is a medium lavender with warm, pink undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. There were faint bits of micro-glitters strewn throughout, but I didn’t find they translated onto the lid (and I could barely see them in the pan!). It had rich color coverage in a single layer, while the texture was soft, blendable, and a smidgen dusty in the pan. There was a touch of fallout during application when I blended it out. It lasted nicely for eight hours on me before creasing faintly.

Ice Queen
Ice Queen is a pale blue with cool undertones and a frosted finish paired with slight micro-glitter. As one might expect, the glitter particles did not adhere well to the lid, so it performed largely as a shimmery shade. It had medium coverage, which built up to semi-opaque coverage with two to three layers, or it could be used with a dampened brush to get semi-opaque coverage in one layer. The texture was soft, slightly loose to the touch, and blended out fine. The eyeshadow wore well for eight hours on me, and fallout did not seem to be an issue but I expect that the lack of glitter adhering to the skin in the first place was what kept fallout at bay.

Ooh and Ahh (Right) is a bright silver with faint micro-glitter over a metallic finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage in a single layer that was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The eyeshadow had a smooth, denser consistency but wasn’t as firm nor was it difficult to blend out compared to its companion hue. Glitter Donut
Glitter Donut is a bright, golden copper with strong, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The texture was noticeably glittery, which gave it a chunkier look and feel. It was best applied with fingertips, a flat, synthetic brush, or with a dampened brush as these methods helped the product press and adhere to the lid with minimal fallout. Applied dry, it had a tendency to have moderate fallout during application and less even coverage. This shade wore well for eight hours with some fallout over time (dry).

Lost Boys
Lost Boys is a deep, emerald green with subtle,w arm brown undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had a denser, thicker texture that was a little drier and firmer in the pan, so I needed to use a denser brush and heavier hand to get good pigmentation out of it. On the lid, it blended out well but I noticed some of the metallic sheen faded within a few minutes of application so it did not appear as high-shine as it did in the pan on my lid. It lasted well for seven and a half hours on me before fading slightly.

NSFW
NSFW is a light-medium brown with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The consistency was smooth and cream-like, dense but not stiff or dry to the touch, and it seemed thicker on my lid than other shades in the palette, so I did prefer to use a dampened brush to get full coverage but help to thin and smooth out the texture. It was intensely pigmented and stayed on well for eight hours with slight fallout over time.

Gretchen
Gretchen is a soft brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, velvety texture that was a little powdery in the pan but blended out nicely on my lid without sheering out. The color wore well for eight hours on me before it started to fade noticeably.

Reality Star
Reality Star is a deep fuchsia with subtle, warm undertones and cooler fuchsia sparkle. The consistency was more loosely pressed and felt drier to the touch compared to some of the other glitter-packed shades (which had a creamier, more silicone-heavy consistency). It had good color coverage but had moderate fallout during application, so it was best applied with a dampened brush for best coverage and minimal fallout. The color lasted well for eight hours with some additional fallout over time.

I Can't Even
I Can’t Even is a deep burgundy with warm undertones and a matte finish. The color coverage was nearly opaque in a single layer, while the texture was soft, smooth, and velvety with a little powderiness in the pan, but it applied and adhered surprisingly well to bare skin. It blended nicely and stayed on for eight hours before it started to fade on me.

Shady Bitch
Shady Bitch is a deep purple with cool undertones and a glittering finish. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, while the texture was noticeably chunkier due to the amount of glitter in it, but it had some creaminess to it, which helped the glitter and underlying pigment bind better and adhere to the lid. There was slight fallout during blending and then slight additional fallout over the eight hours it lasted for.

Chill Out
Chill Out is a deep blue with strong, cool undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had a denser, creamier consistency–more slip, felt silicone-heavy to the touch–and was a bit thicker than most of the other eyeshadows in the palette, though it did not seem too difficult to apply or blend out. It was best applied with a firmer, synthetic brush and pressed and gently pulled outward to blend/diffuse the edges (which is a technique I find to work with more silicone-heavy formulas). It wore well for eight hours and had a smidgen of fallout over time.

Ooh La La (Left)
Ooh La La (Left) is a deep black with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin finish. It had opaque color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin, but it took a little more effort than ideal to diffuse and blend out the edges. The texture was firmer in the pan but not to the point where it was stiff or difficult to pick up. It stayed on nicely for eight hours before it started fade on me.

LELimited Edition. $16.00.
Ooh La La (Right)
Ooh La La (Right) is a light-medium, peachy gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation but a very strong sheen that made it harder to tell that it wasn’t fully opaque in a single layer. The texture was stiffer and drier in the pan, so it took a heavier handed approach to pick up product on my brush, but once on my brush, it applied and blended out just fine on my skin. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me before starting to fade noticeably.

Yeah, I think I’m going to pass on this. I have these kinds of shade from them and other brands.
I’m not surprised!
I’m pleasantly surprised by the rating, but this is a skip for me. I have too many repeat shades. The shades that I don’t have dupes for, are shades that I would never use. The only thing that tempts me is that one of the shades is named after Zsa Zsa Gabor and I think that is so adorable. Too bad it’s not a shade that performs well.
I wish Zsa Zsa was better, too!
OMG – what a mammoth palette and Christine, you have done a magnificient job in reviewing this in such a short time.
This palette is much better than what I expected, with a full gamut of shades and finishes. It wouldb’t be Too Faced if there wasn’t an F somewhere or a mean/rude name for one of its shades. At least the brand only kept it to one name.
I really like the shades and I think this is an incredibly versatile palette, even though it is large. It’s a shame when brands use glitter in their finishes as they are often not as good as they could be and a satin/shimmer finish is much more popular and easier to get right.
Beautiful, beautiful eye looks too.
Thank you so much, Genevieve! It was quite the dupe-entering endeavor, lol!
I don’t see anything here that I don’t already have somewhere here. Between the lack of uniqueness and the unwieldy size, this just isn’t bowling me over. I DO love the outside packaging! Giggled a little when I saw one of the shades that I remember my daughter pointing out years ago as being a fabulous deep brown shimmer: Dirt Bag! As I recall, that was a favorite of hers.
Yeah, TF’s original shades were before my makeup time, I think, so none of them jogged any memories, but it’s cool to hear from someone who does remember!
Some of those are certainly pretty but nothing I can’t live without. And it’s certaibly a hefty palette! If I’m being honest, the only reason I’d pick this up is the packaging because I think it’s absolutely adorable. At one point in my life that would have been enough.
Am I just crazy or are the circular pans too small for their holes in the palette? It’s just a little detail but not something I’d expect in a $60 palette.
I think they are actually smaller than the opening, because you can see gaps between the pan and opening in places! You can see it most with Dirt Bag (photo 3) and Trixie (photo 5).
Maybe it’s just because of the extreme closeups and the sharpness and clarity of your photos but the pans (especially the round ones) don’t seem to fit very well into the palette. I’ve used Too Faced for 10 years and don’t see any of my “old faves” in this palette, as I said in your earlier peek at this product. I’d have loved seeing some of my “old faves” from the days when they sold singles and those split pan duos but except for Dirt Bag and Ooh and Aah, I don’t even recognize any of these shadows.
They fit, but most of opening is larger than the pans and some of the pans are more aligned to the top/bottom of an opening so you can see the gaps.
I am thrilled that I am not interested in this palette at all!
Oh my gosh I remember ooh and ah!!! I loved those split pans and I remember at the time they weren’t popular and people didn’t rate too faced eyeshadow but I always loved mine and found them so useful I used them every day in my youth!! I’m sure I still have them, so cute! And I have an old sun bunny with the old logo of a cartoon high ponytail girl. I loved too faced back then. I don’t recognise any of my old faces though, in fact none of the other shades ring a bell. Anyway it’s a great concept although strangely interpreted but I like that they tried something different. However I won’t be buying it as I have too much makeup. If it had more of the duo split pans I may have bought it for nostalgia.
So glad to see your review of this palette. Also, thank you so much for your other post with 15 looks! You are so talented & I’m grateful for all the work you do to show us which products are worth purchasing & how to use those products
I have this palette & love it! I’m surprised you disliked Zsa Zsa so much because it’s my favorite shade in the palette. It’s SO easy to work with for me & I really have no skills. (Perhaps that’s why I like it. Maybe it’s not good for people who are actually skilled!) It does have a LOT of fall-out, though.
This palette would be so much better if it were smaller. I find the size to be rather unwieldy & difficult to hold. Obviously, that doesn’t stop me from using it but it makes it less likely to be useful during travel.
I could really see the palette working well in half! Like an earthy, warmer neutral palette and a smoky, purplish palette.
That’s why I love Christine and trust her reviews. She does each test the same and doesn’t vary to make the product work better. She shows the good, bad, and the ugly and is never biased. I don’t know how she does it all but I greatly appreciate it!
