Sephora Editorial PRO Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Editorial
Sephora Editorial PRO Eyeshadow Palette ($68.00 for 1.12 oz.) contains 28 eyeshadows in vibrant hues and varying textures. This palette is definitely more of a complementary palette than a standalone one; it will work best paired with more cohesive palettes (like the Cool or Warm palettes), though of course, it can be used on its own. It will just be a lot more versatile when used alongside other palettes! I think that this palette is usable with primer and is best with a very light or white base to ensure the truest color payoff and intensity for the majority of brighter matte shades.
Also, I was surprised at some of the brightness/richness in the hues in the palette, as I have only typically seen that vibrancy in shades that were, consequently, labeled as not safe for the “eye area” in the U.S. (typically allowed in Canada and the EU). I reviewed the ingredient list for this one, and my understanding is that “Yellow 6 Lake” is D&C Yellow No. 6 AI Lake, which is listed as “No” for use on the “Eye Area.” This was true with Red 28 Lake (D&C Red No. 28 AI Lake), Red 7 Lake (D&C Red. No. 7), and Red 6 Lake (D&C Red No. 6). These ingredients may be found in these shades: Chris, Porcelain, Tangerine, Amy, Jeffery, Eliza D, Helen P, Tiila, Myiesha, Shawn, and ELectric Violet. You can find color additive information from the FDA here. I could not find any information on my Sephora palette, the included insert that walked through looks (that included instructions to use some of those shades specifically on the eye area), or online. The palette is specifically referenced as a “deluxe eyeshadow palette” and a “PRO eyeshadow palette.” I think that brands should more clearly label or include warnings so that consumers can make an informed decision for themselves. If it’s a non-issue for one person but a deal-breaker for the other, I’m good either way, just as long as the information is there.
The formula is supposed to feature “high pigment, high performance” with long wear and better adhesion. The matte shades were often powdery with some seeming chalky–I had a lot of looks turn a bit gray or muddy along the edges after using a shade above the crease or on the brow bone. The shimmers varied from smooth, creamy, and dense (with noticeable silicone) or drier, looser, and there were some glitter shades that felt more like loose sand than usable product. The latter was barely salvage with a glitter adhesive, but they could not be solved with fingertips or a damp brush.
I know there has been a lot of buzz about the new Sephora PRO palettes, but I did not find the eyeshadow formula to be that easy to work with as quality varied too much between shades, they applied lighter/darker than they appeared in the pan, and there was considerable fallout (and yes, I did tap off excess product prior to applying!). Even when I tried the formula over a primer, I was less impressed; sometimes, I felt like the eyeshadows were easier to control over bare skin! I’ve actually been a fan of Sephora’s Colorful Eyeshadows since they released them several years ago, including the reformulation, but these are substantially different (which some may prefer).
$68 is a higher price point for palettes, but for most mid-end brands, it seems in line with the size of the palette–each shade is almost as much the average single, full-size eyeshadow. Sephora’s house brand isn’t high-end, and it sometimes comes in lower than mid-end with respect to product pricing, but it seems to float around there. Using Sephora’s Colorful Eyeshadow (different formula) as a point of comparison, each shade retails for $10.00 and contains 0.07 oz. or $142.86/oz. The palette retails for $68.00 and contains 1.12 oz. or $60.71/oz. Here are some other pricing comparisons of a few mid-end/high-end palettes:
Sephora PRO Eyeshadow Palette: $68.00 for 1.12 oz. or $60.71/oz.
Too Faced Natural Love: $59.00 for 0.90 oz. or $65.56/oz.
Tarte Tarteist Palette: $53.00 for 0.70 oz. or $75.71/oz.
Ciate Pretty, Fun, & Fearless: $42.00 for 0.52 oz. or $80.77/oz.
Too Faced Sweet Peach: $49.00 for 0.54 oz. or $90.74/oz.

Porcelain
Porcelain is a bright white with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, which was buildable over a primer or base but not on bare skin as it was incredibly powdery and prone to sheering out. This shade lasted for five and a half hours on me.

White Gold
White Gold is a bright, white gold with warm, yellow undertones and a pearly sheen. It had fantastic color payoff that covered the lid with smooth, even color. The texture was soft, moderately dense, and blendable in practice. I noticed slight fading after eight hours of wear.

Julie T
Julie T is a pale white with a green shift and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that wasn’t too firm or too loose in the pan. This shade worked well on its own or layered over another shade to transform it. On me, the eyeshadow lasted for eight hours before creasing faintly.

Ice
Ice is a very like, silvery white with glitter. It had sheer, barely-there coverage with a loose consistency that made the glitter get everywhere on the lid. With a dampened brush, it still did not go well, and the only way to work with it was using an adhesive base or patting over a cream eyeshadow.

Silver Coin
Silver Coin is a bright silver with a metallic sheen. It had semi-sheer pigmentation that did not build up well without a tacky base under it (regular primer was not enough). I’m not sure why this shade was included given that Ice, while it had larger glitter particles, had a similar effect–I don’t think the palette needed both. This shade stayed on well for seven hours.

Tangerine
Tangerine is a bright, light-medium orange with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. The color payoff was fantastic, while the consistency was smooth, velvety, and very blendable on the lid. Amy
Amy is a bright, medium coral-orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff with a smooth, velvety texture that kicked up some excess in the pan but was not too powdery overall. I did find that it had a tendency to apply more unevenly and did not blend as easily over bare skin–it needed primer to function well. This shade lasted for eight hours and stained my lid slightly.

Champagne
Champagne is a brighter, light gold with slightly warm, yellow undertones paired with a glittery, metallic finish. Chris
Chris is a rich, cobalt blue with cool, almost violet, undertones and a matte finish. It was richly pigmented, but it was only after working away the top layer, which revealed a smoother, more velvety powder–I only happened to notice because it was exceptionally terrible initially but my photo did not turn out well and I had to re-swatch… and it was completely different. I did struggle to use it over bare skin, though, as it was difficult to blend out along the edges for a nice, diffused edge. The color itself wore well for eight hours on me.

Dina is a medium-dark blue with cool undertones and a pearly sheen. The consistency was slightly drier, which made the edges of the eyeshadow appear more dragged out and ragged with less of a blended edge. It lasted for eight hours on me.

Pink Quartz
Pink Quartz is a light, rosy beige with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had opaque color payoff paired with a smoother, almost cream-like texture that was moderately dense and binded better together than expected. I did have some fallout over an eight-hour period, but it was a lot less than I would have imagined. I would recommend using this with an adhesive spray or base, though.

Wendy G
Wendy G is a medium gold with warm, orange undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The consistency was soft but drier in the pan, where the larger flecks of sparkle seemed to separate from the base powder. I had the best luck applying this with a dampened brush, which helped it bind better and apply more evenly to the lid. There was still some fallout over the eight hours it lasted for, though.

Lou is a light-medium, golden brown with warm, orange undertones and a green-gold shift. The texture was smooth, almost cream-like, and easy to work with on the lid. It had rich, opaque coverage that lasted for eight hours.

Karoline
Karoline is a medium-dark copper brown with warm, red undertones and a glittery finish. The texture had noticeable flecks of larger glitter, so it was not a shade that applied well (or lasted without fallout) on its own. Again, this is one I would use with an adhesive base or with a dampened brush. I could use a dampened brush to apply it better but still had moderate fallout over an eight-hour period.

It did much better than I would have thought. I love those bright pinks and purples.
It wasn’t terrible!
I love this palette but I’m so over Limited Edition palette in general. If this had permanent shades from their range in it as well, I would have gone for it. 😉
Totally understand that sentiment! It is always LE overload!
Your pink toned eye look is stunning!!
Thank you, Brittany!
This is heartbreaking, as there’s so many unique, interesting shades/finishes in this kit. But it’s a skip for me due to the so-so performance, and 10 of the “shadows” could potentially be unsafe for the eye area 🙁 Thanks for pointing that out, would never have noticed myself. Guess I’ll check out the dupes list!
No problem, Katherine! It doesn’t seem to be on the packaging/palette/description, so I wouldn’t expect most people to even think about it! 🙁
This one is fairly impressive, tbh, I wasn’t expecting that! Thankfully, I’ve got many a dupe for many a shade. And YET; I am still a bit drawn to it?
I also have to give big ups to you for your honesty on this palette having some shades that didn’t include the disclosure by Sephora concerning them not being “eye safe” per FDA. Rather shady on Sephora’s part, I think. Realistically, it’s also the FDA’s fault for not getting with the program, as other countries have no issue with those same dyes. But who knows, there probably are some people who do get allergic reactions to one or 2 of the foreworned dyes. I’m definitely NOT one of them, though. Only thing that I have a gripe with is not-so-micro-glitter falling into my eyes!
Thank goodness you don’t have any sensitivity to those ingredients! 🙂
This looks like such a fun, playful palette! I can see myself having a lot of fun with some of those rainbow mattes. Just not for $70 though lol. These palettes are expensive imo. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that the quality warrants the high price tag either
I wish it was a bit better!
I have both the Warm & Editorial and I absolutely love them both. I only had issues with muddies once and that was my fault for ignoring the color wheel, lol. But I was able to fix the problem relatively easily. I definitely see where the grade came from for both palettes, but a lot of the shades you had issues with, I’ve been able to use with a little tweaking.
Happy to hear that you’re enjoying your palettes, Jessica!
Love so many of the colors here and could see this being a fun addition to ones pro makeup kit based on that detail alone, but the quality of some of the shades makes me hesitate purchasing.
It would work better as a pro makeup piece, I think!
Whilst it is an overall better palette than the others, it is still not for me. All those bright pinks, oranges and purples do not really suit me. And most of the shades in the first row look very similar to each other too.
The only unique shade was Lou – very pretty and I liked David too (a good shade that is my son’s name).
I do see what you mean Christine about the ingredients and appropriate warnings. My optometrist tells me that more women have trouble with the pink, purple and red shades irritating their eyes than anything else. Sephora has been in the makeup business long enough to make sure that potentially harmful ingredients should not be included in their eye products and they know the cosmetic laws in every country they sell in.
From what I have heard, that is really the issue – just a higher incidence of reaction from those dyes, but I’m not well-versed in the level of reaction / long-term consequences (if any). I know that using say, craft glitter on the eys, is a far more egregious offense since that for sure is dangerous to anyone (potentially) and can have very severe consequences.
Ahhhh, this one still sits on my Loves list. I’m starting to lean towards getting it at some point since one of the reviews on the Sephora site said, there were dupes for the entire KVD Alchemist palette. Mine fell in the toilet after getting knocked off the shelf in my tiny bathroom 🙁 I still have an old Victoria’s Secret palette that is pretty similar and included a gold sparkly shade so I may just wait it out and see if it goes on sale. The Pro highlight palettes just did in time for me to grab a Tatcha purple mask sample that I would never pay full price for but it has great reviews. Thanks for reviewing these 3 palettes, Christina! Quite an undertaking!
Well, let us know if you give it a try, Anne! 🙂
Thanks so much for your review. I’ve watched a lot of others review this on youtube, and the consensus is that the fall out is INSANE. Maybe the worst compared to other high end palettes.
