Jaclyn Hill

Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Eyeshadow Palette ($38.00 for 1.98 oz.) contains 35 eyeshadows with most of them living within the warm, neutral family, but there were a few pops of color as well. The eyeshadows are supposed to have “the best color payoff” and “amazing application.”

The shimmery shades had a denser, creamier consistency–the kind that you can tell there are silicones in it–and will work best with someone with a slightly heavier hand or uses firmer brushes (I was able to use my go-to MAC 239s for the most part). If you use a really light hand with this type of formula, you just won’t pickup much product on your brush. The shimmers were quite pigmented with seven- to eight-hour wear (without a primer).

The matte eyeshadows weren’t thin but were not quite as creamy as some of the best matte eyeshadows on the market. The pigmentation varied from medium to opaque, but the majority of the matte eyeshadows that seemed less pigmented were buildable and blendable on the lid. They largely performed much better in practice than just swatched, which could be a matter of surface area (a third of the lid is far less than one’s arm) or difference in overall texture (my arm is dry, my lids are normal), even though I used similar brushes for swatching and applying.

There has been some drama with respect to color selection, naming scheme, whether the formula is different or better than Morphe’s products typically, and the increase in pricing. Here are some of my generalized thoughts:

The color selection is predominantly warmer neutrals with a mix of shimmers and mattes, and then there are a few pops of color thrown in–and those pops of color actually run cooler. While the pops of color are undoubtedly pretty, I actually found them harder to incorporate with a lack of coordinating more cool-toned/neutral-toned transition shades. I also thought it was odd not to have more of a satin-to-pearl finish in a beige color, especially given that Enlight and Beam were rather similar–one could have been more of a satin, which I think would have made it a more versatile piece in the palette. Like all palettes, whether the color selection will work for you will depend on how you expect to use the palette, whether you want it to work as a standalone palette or will pair it with other products, and what your coloring and preferences are. Overall, if you’re really into warmer neutrals, there are plenty to choose from.

There’s no reason for me to address the names as Jaclyn Hill, who is the collaborator for the palette, outlines her choices in her video here, so you can get that information first-hand if you are so inclined. For those who had no idea what the acronyms meant (that included me), M.F.E.O. stands for “Made For Each Other” and S.B.N.” stands for “Smoky But Natural.”

I’m not overly familiar with Morphe’s formula but saw such a high number of requests to review this collaboration that it inspired me to finally give the brand a try. I picked up one of their popular 35-pan palettes (35O) as a point of comparison, but it is actually their 25-pan palette formula that is more comparable with respect to ingredients to the formula used in the Jaclyn Hill palette. The lists are very similar, but kaolin is added in the Jaclyn Hill palette’s ingredient list as the third ingredient, which may or may not have a notable impact. I did make a second purchase for the 25-pan palettes to see but don’t expect to have those for a week or longer (I expedited my original order). With respect to the 35O, the shimmers in the Jaclyn Hill palette were similar but sometimes denser or “thicker” in a way–like they were more cream than powder, while the mattes varied as well with some being comparable and some being more substantial in the Jaclyn Hill palette (smoother, not as thin).

Jaclyn Hill spoke in her video (linked previously) about the price increase and said that Morphe used new machinery and more expensive colorants to create the product and that every shade was pressed specifically to make that shade the best it could be. I personally think that it is on the brand to manage their costs of development with respect to new machinery, securing time on a line, or whatever–those are costs of production, and investing back into your business is part of growing and improving your business. As far as the grade or quality of particular ingredients, I’m certainly not sophisticated enough to notice it specifically (“ah, there’s the Rolls Royce of blue pigment!”) but like most things in life, there are tiers and grades of products (it reminds me of when I learned about carpet and different pricing tiers and why).

I spoke with a few insiders and they said that it isn’t uncommon to adjust the press from shade to shade or finish to finish. I can speak from experience that the pressure used to press a powder product can sometimes impact how it performs, but it really varies. For example, MAC matte eyeshadows have a much firmer press compared to LORAC matte eyeshadows. MAC matte eyeshadows often perform much better on the lid and are more buildable while still being quite blendable, but I have encountered stiffer/firmer eyeshadows that translate into products that look patchy and do not want to blend out at all. LORAC eyeshadows are so soft that they can feel powdery, dusty, or thin, and they can sometimes sheer out on their own or melt/fade quickly on the lids, but others love them for how blendable they are, as they are also rather forgiving.

I also talked to someone who produces eyeshadow palettes about the packaging, as the Jaclyn Hill palette uses cardboard compared to plastic on the 35-pan and 25-pan palettes Morphe has in their line-up. They actually said that cardboard can be more expensive than plastic. The actual cardboard used for the exterior of the palette also gets dirty very quickly as well (doesn’t seem to wipe off completely). A lot of brands that sell at $40+ have used cardboard (Too Faced, Tarte all come to mind), but I know some people prefer plastic over cardboard and vice versa. What I found odd about the palette at this price point was the lack of a mirror and names printed on the palette (even just on the back, though right under each shade would be ideal with 35 shades!). I think there could also have been more information included about the colors/names chosen on the palette (I mean, the back of it has a lot of real estate) as a more personal touch.

Enlight

Enlight is a brighter, buttery white with warm undertones and metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation that applied a little more unevenly to bare skin than I expected. I also noticed that it always looked starker–whiter and less yellow–in practice on me (which I found odd, given I am warmer in tone!). The texture had a medium density, so it was not too thick but was more firmly pressed in the pan but still had good coverage and wasn’t powdery/dusty. It lasted for seven hours on me.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. May contain: Isononyl Isononanoate, Isostearyl Isostearate, Nylon-12, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Magnesium Stearate, Silica, Titanium Dioxide (CI77891), Iron Oxide Black (CI77499), Iron Oxide Yellow (CI77492), Iron Oxide Red (CI77491), Hydrated Chromium Oxide Green (CI77289), Ultramarine Blue (CI77007), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI77510), Chromium Oxide Greens (CI77288), Manganese Violet (CI77742), FD&C Red 40 AI Lake (CI16035), FD&C Yellow 5 AI Lake (CI19140), FD&C Blue 1 AI Lake (CI42090).

Silk Crème

Silk Crème is a light-medium peach with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. The color payoff was good, though the soft, lightly powdery texture did not make it as buildable as other shades–it was always a bit translucent. Depending on your skin tone, it may not be obvious at all. This shade lasted for six and a half hours on me.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. M.F.E.O.

M.F.E.O. is a light, peachy brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had medium color coverage that was buildable to semi-opaque coverage. The consistency was soft, a little powdery in the pan, but it blended out well and lasted for seven hours on me.

Faint

Faint is a light pink with strong, warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had opaque color payoff paired with a moderately dense texture that was smooth, creamy, but on the thicker side, which made it a bit harder to spread across the lid and more prone to emphasizing my lid’s natural texture. It lasted for seven hours before creasing.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. Sissy

Sissy is a medium pink with cooler undertones and a warmer, golden sheen. The texture was moderately dense and required a firmer hand or a flat, synthetic brush for decent application, as the thicker feel made it harder to spread across the lid without getting unevenness in the shimmer. It had good color payoff, though, and wore nicely for seven hours on me before creasing.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. Little Lady

Little Lady is a medium copper with warm, gold shimmer and a metallic sheen. The pigmentation was nearly opaque, while the consistency was dense enough that it required a heavier touch to get product onto the brush, but from there, I had no trouble applying or blending out the eyeshadow. It wore well for seven and a half hours before creasing slightly.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. Creamsicle

Creamsicle is a bright, light-medium yellow-orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a more powdery texture, though it was very smooth and finely-milled to the touch. It applied evenly with more semi-opaque coverage as it seemed to diffuse a bit in practice, but I was able to build it up to more opaque coverage with a second layer. The color seemed to darken and mute within a few minutes of applying, so I could not quite get the brightness in the pan to translate on the lid. It wore well for seven and a half hours before fading.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. Butter

Butter is a light-medium orange with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had medium pigmentation with a slightly firmer press that made it harder to apply and blend out. It was easier to work with by first packing it on and then using a separate brush to blend out. This shade lasted for six and a half hours on me but never looked as bright on the lid as it did in the pan (seemed to have an initial fade within minutes of application).

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. Hunts

Hunts is a medium-dark copper with strong, warm orange undertones and a mostly matte finish. I noticed this shade had a tendency to absorb any natural oils on my skin and yield a more semi-matte finish–it was just quite sensitive to that. The texture was smooth, finely-milled, and blendable on the lid. It had opaque pigmentation that lasted for seven and a half hours.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. Firework is a rich, medium-dark copper with warm, red undertones and a pearly sheen. The eyeshadow had opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly to the lid, though I found it faded within a few minutes a bit (enough that it was noticeable but the product was still there… just not as intense). The texture was moderately dense, a little thicker but was easy to work with. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me before creasing faintly.

Ingredients

Obsessed

Obsessed is a light beige with a hint of warm, peach undertones and a metallic finish. The texture was moderately dense and thicker, which did result in emphasis of my lid’s natural texture when used dry. When I used it with a dampened brush, it applied more smoothly. It had rich pigmentation, though, and lasted for six and a half hours before creasing on me.

Ingredients

S.B.N.

S.B.N. is a medium-dark, coppery brown with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The color payoff was opaque, while the texture was slightly looser and drier in the pan, which resulted in some product fallout during application (even after tapping away excess). I think this shade would be better used with a dampened brush to minimize the fallout and improve the overall smoothness in the finish. The color stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me.

Jacz is a burnt brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which was buildable to opaque coverage with two layers. Cranapple

Cranapple is a brighter, medium red with strong, warm orange undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was rather dense, and it was harder to apply with regular brushes, though a flat, synthetic brush (I liked MAC 249 for this shade) made it easier to apply than a regular natural-haired brush. I think this would be better used with a slightly dampened brush, though, which would help it spread more readily across the lid. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

24/7 is a medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had opaque pigmentation with a very dense, smooth consistency that had fine glitter in it. You’ll want to use a heavier touch or denser brush with this shade (or fingertips), though I used my standard MAC 239 with a firmer hand and had no trouble getting product to translate. Diva is a deep, muted forest green with cooler undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had the greatest density out of all the shades–it was cream-like but very firm and “thick” in a way, which did require a stiffer brush in order to get coverage out of it. I used a flat, synthetic brush (MAC 242) to apply, and I had no trouble getting opaque coverage out of it. Soda Pop is a blackened purple with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that applied better on the lid than it did swatched on my arm. Abyss

Abyss is a medium black with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had medium, buildable color payoff with a slightly drier texture that wasn’t difficult to blend out but was more prone to kicking up product in the pan and having a bit of fallout during application. This shade started to fade on me after six and a half hours of wear.

I have quite a bit of experience with Morphe’s eye shadow palettes, having managed to collect and use most of the 35 pan palettes (as well as a couple of the 25 pan palettes). I’ve been turned off enough by them to not buy this one — or any more Morphe products for a plethora of reasons, not the least of which is reverting to my stance of not buying items made in China. Your score of B- is about what I would give all their products on a good day.

I do appreciate you reviewing this. My budget is small, and I happen to enjoy Morphe products. Once this is back in stock I may purchase it (a B- is still good for me!), the shade selection is pretty and I know I can make a bunch of different looks. 🙂

No problem, Sarah! I think if you typically use primer or don’t mind that the matte shades are more buildable, you’ll be good. My “feeling” of the palette was a solid B – not perfect but usable, and at the end of the day, functional. It was a lot easier to use without primer than some of Too Faced’s palettes!

Overall this palette did much better than I thought it would given the swatches. There are a lot of shades that I would not use although I love Cranapple. I do have two of the dupes although my dupes appear more shimmery than Cranapple. I also love Royalty but that is available as a single so no worries there. I think that those who pick up this palette will enjoy using it. I just have so many palettes with similar colors to justify purchasing.

It was a lot easier to apply and use than I expected based on swatching alone, which is always a good thing and where it matters most!

I cannot believe you pulled this off so quickly. Despite having zero interest, I will read every word! Kudos! The pressure was enormous, not to mention the self inflicted aspect, lol. You are beyond amazing. Talk about a labor of love….

Thanks for reviewing, haven’t tried Morphe yet, but very curious, heard mixed reviews. I might try the brand one day, but not with this palette. Jumbo palettes like these just overwhelm my brain; I prefer palettes of 8 -15 shades. I would’ve preferred to have far fewer shades of brown and more pops of color, or maybe this jumbo palette broken up into 3 more manageable kits with color themes (brown, green, blue, purple).

Yes! I’ve never gone for a big ES palette yet, they just seem so bulky and inconvenient. I feel like they’re better for makeup artists.

I also think is a nightmare to keep these huge palettes and I’m no beauty expert better fir makeup artist u guess and I wonder if you drop it most of them will brake and I would cry! I love the colors but I prefer the Colourpop Yes Please 12 shades ones and I don’t need many repeat shades but would like to get them when available. Out of stock. 🙁

I find the inclusion of the cool shades to be such an afterthought – particularly in terms of color, layout and adding to the overall cohesive nature of the palette. I’m not a huge fan of hers – her look is way too much of everything for my liking and frankly her personality grates – but in watching her video explanation I get the feeling that the rethinking of 9 shades led to this random inclusion of cool shades. I think she would have been bette off staying all warm or dividing the palette more for a balance of cool and warm to make it look like it was done with some consideration. As to the other criticisms – I couldn’t agree more. I’ll pass on the easy target of random names that don’t make a lot of sense or are only inside jokes to her family, but to not print them anywhere? Why would I care for a back panel of her initials? That’s just laziness on Morphe’s part. It would take a little effort to do a proper layout of color names and pan representations (at minimum) on the back and it wouldn’t have cost any more than it did to print what they ended up with.

There are some obvious combos that come to mind to use them, but the pops of color weren’t as versatile just because they ran a lot cooler and so much of the palette is quite warm.

I’m never keen on palettes that don’t keep info ON the palette, and with the size of this one, there’s room for days – and as you mentioned, it would be unlikely to have cost more to have more printing on it… even if they kept it simple.

Wow, I’m impressed you were able to review so quickly!!! Great job Christine!! I’m glad I passed on this palette and just picked up dupes of the colors that were interesting to me.

Always impressed by your combo of hustle + attention to detail on these massive palette reviews! And “ah, there’s the Rolls Royce of blue pigment!” almost made me do a spit take.

I have no need for this palette, but I genuinely appreciate some of the color choices — like the blackened purple matte, for example. And not surprised to see a MUG Chickadee dupe in there, based on some of the JH tutorials I’ve watched.

The colors selected all make sense to me, too, based on Jaclyn Hill’s preferences and the like. I think you can get a good variety of warmer, neutral looks out of it.

Were this not a Jacklyn collab, and not hyped to the max, it would have made a passable beginner gift palette. It has warm neutrals and the expected nods to ‘today’s’ colors…those look awfully close to me. Personally, it just confirms my desire for the Zoeva matte palette that channels Edward Hopper names. That one has my sensibilities. Your info often lets us refine what we truly want, not chase the latest big thing, and is invaluable.

It’s not bad – I found it a lot easier to work with than I expected. I didn’t have any moments where I was really challenged by blending or getting everything to come together – and a lot of B/C palettes can have moments like that.

It seems to have performed very well.. except for jada.. I was surprised at the grade!! Mine is still on the way (1.5 weeks for shipping.. pfffft) but this makes me excited cause I always trust your reviews! Thanks for reviewing this!

Jada is SO terrible. One of the worst eyeshadows I’ve used this year for sure.

I expedited mine – $23!!! – that is the only reason I got mine quickly. I was actually impressed that Morphe packed and shipped my order the day of launch, to be honest – a lot of brands take 2-5 days just to process!

I made sure to watch Jaclyn’s video so I could grab info from that, since she’d be the best source for the whys!

Looks like a good palette – great selection and good price point. There are so many elements in the manufacturing process it is senseless to speculate on costs, techniques, etc. If one doesn’t like the aesthetics or price, move on to the next. Ridiculous to argue Creme de la Mer should be priced as Nivea given similar ingredients.

Yes, it would be very hard to actually know for a fact if the palette cost more or less than any other palette. I think if we look at the cost compared to the 25-pan palettes and figure the formulations are similar enough that $32 vs. $38 is less of a stretch – the $6 is “palatable” to me as the cost of the collaborator/change in packaging (it is different). I did think it was important to try and get a little more clarity on the process, though, since I’m sure many, like myself, do not know the ins and outs of manufacturing.

I don’t disagree with this statement except that JH herself (in her video about the palette) stated that part of the reason for the price increase was the new equipment, which I think is just ridiculous. That’s a cost of doing business & unless all their new palettes with be priced this way, then it’s just a silly thing to say.

As someone who is not a follower of Jaclyn Hill and has never bought anything from Morphe, I think that this palette is decent to good, and something I could actually consider purchasing. There are only a couple of real duds, and for only a little over $1 per shadow, the overall quality is not bad at all, especially if they work better on the eye than swatched. Let’s keep in mind that these shadows are low cost and made in China, obviously you can’t expect them to be the best you’ve ever seen.

One thing that I find really odd is the absence of a matte or satin ivory, and it’s annoying to think that I would need to use an extra shadow to be able to work with a palette of 35! There are also a few shades in there that I would likely not use, but overall I find the selection rather well done for a warm neutral palette, and the more colorful shades on the bottom left give more options for varied looks.

I think a lot of the drama has to do with people feeling very involved when a big beauty guru collaborates with a brand. Personally I don’t have strong feelings about either the influencer or the brand (except the image I have of Morphe is that of a cheap and mediocre brand), so I’m judging this palette on the actual product. I think it would be a very good pick for a beginner, someone who doesn’t have very many eyeshadows yet, or someone who wears warm neutrals regularly. I personally like that there are many transition shades in there, and this is where my collection tends to be lacking. I might never get it though, because I’m not planning to stalk Morphe’s website to grab one as soon as they restock. But I think the criticism has been very harsh. It was well deserved when Becca completely dropped the ball on the eyeshadow palette in the JH collection, because Becca is a high end, expensive brand that typically releases top quality products. Morphe is not. They upped the price because it says “Jaclyn Hill” on the lid and they spent a bit more time formulating the shades. They didn’t suddenly start selling top quality shadows made in Italy.

There are plenty of $40-60 palettes that have scored similarly, too – and frankly, the more shades you cram into a palette, the harder it can be to get close to an A. My gut feeling made me think of the palette as a B, but the scores of Jada just made it harder for everything else to climb close enough to get to a B.

I found the absence of a light beige (matte/satin) to be weird, too, particularly with the two first shades being so light anyway. If there were only 12 shades or less, it wouldn’t be as surprising, but with 35, there was certainly room.

Exactly, how can you find space for 10 different warm transition shades but not a matte beige? I actually watched the video where Jaclyn Hill explains how she picked the shades, and while her rationale for the first two made sense (one warm, one neutral so more skintones have a shimmery highlighter shade that flatter them), I still don’t get how she could skip a matte/satin version.

I thought that Jada was probably what took the overall score down to a B-, and the palette would get a B without it. The quality across shades is actually pretty consistent, based on the grades, with just one big fail.

I’m so with you! The first two could have been pink-beige and warm beige or else matte/satin beige and shimmery beige. I rarely use a matte highlighter BUT often mix a matte beige with a frosty beige to get the right overall sheen for a brow bone highlighter based on the rest of the look.

I use a matte beige/ivory with almost every look as a “blender” shade, to soften the edges above the crease and in the outer corner, so it’s really a problem for me not to have one!

^ This was such a turn off for me.

When I saw that Enlight and Beam were practically the same and the question popped up was “Why is isn’t one of those shades matte!”. But in general why is there not more skin tone blender shades when your reach is for a larger audience. The have 35 shades slots to work with. let make this a worable palette.

PS. I have yet to get my hand on anything morphe, IMATS Toronto turns their booth into a single line con for the whole day and the shipping rates are high. It’s a matter of not worth my time/money and people that try to swap their products treat them like gold….. lol
