Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Jaclyn Hill
Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Eyeshadow Palette ($38.00 for 1.98 oz.) contains 35 eyeshadows with most of them living within the warm, neutral family, but there were a few pops of color as well. The eyeshadows are supposed to have “the best color payoff” and “amazing application.”
The shimmery shades had a denser, creamier consistency–the kind that you can tell there are silicones in it–and will work best with someone with a slightly heavier hand or uses firmer brushes (I was able to use my go-to MAC 239s for the most part). If you use a really light hand with this type of formula, you just won’t pickup much product on your brush. The shimmers were quite pigmented with seven- to eight-hour wear (without a primer).
The matte eyeshadows weren’t thin but were not quite as creamy as some of the best matte eyeshadows on the market. The pigmentation varied from medium to opaque, but the majority of the matte eyeshadows that seemed less pigmented were buildable and blendable on the lid. They largely performed much better in practice than just swatched, which could be a matter of surface area (a third of the lid is far less than one’s arm) or difference in overall texture (my arm is dry, my lids are normal), even though I used similar brushes for swatching and applying.
There has been some drama with respect to color selection, naming scheme, whether the formula is different or better than Morphe’s products typically, and the increase in pricing. Here are some of my generalized thoughts:
The color selection is predominantly warmer neutrals with a mix of shimmers and mattes, and then there are a few pops of color thrown in–and those pops of color actually run cooler. While the pops of color are undoubtedly pretty, I actually found them harder to incorporate with a lack of coordinating more cool-toned/neutral-toned transition shades. I also thought it was odd not to have more of a satin-to-pearl finish in a beige color, especially given that Enlight and Beam were rather similar–one could have been more of a satin, which I think would have made it a more versatile piece in the palette. Like all palettes, whether the color selection will work for you will depend on how you expect to use the palette, whether you want it to work as a standalone palette or will pair it with other products, and what your coloring and preferences are. Overall, if you’re really into warmer neutrals, there are plenty to choose from.
There’s no reason for me to address the names as Jaclyn Hill, who is the collaborator for the palette, outlines her choices in her video here, so you can get that information first-hand if you are so inclined. For those who had no idea what the acronyms meant (that included me), M.F.E.O. stands for “Made For Each Other” and S.B.N.” stands for “Smoky But Natural.”
I’m not overly familiar with Morphe’s formula but saw such a high number of requests to review this collaboration that it inspired me to finally give the brand a try. I picked up one of their popular 35-pan palettes (35O) as a point of comparison, but it is actually their 25-pan palette formula that is more comparable with respect to ingredients to the formula used in the Jaclyn Hill palette. The lists are very similar, but kaolin is added in the Jaclyn Hill palette’s ingredient list as the third ingredient, which may or may not have a notable impact. I did make a second purchase for the 25-pan palettes to see but don’t expect to have those for a week or longer (I expedited my original order). With respect to the 35O, the shimmers in the Jaclyn Hill palette were similar but sometimes denser or “thicker” in a way–like they were more cream than powder, while the mattes varied as well with some being comparable and some being more substantial in the Jaclyn Hill palette (smoother, not as thin).
Jaclyn Hill spoke in her video (linked previously) about the price increase and said that Morphe used new machinery and more expensive colorants to create the product and that every shade was pressed specifically to make that shade the best it could be. I personally think that it is on the brand to manage their costs of development with respect to new machinery, securing time on a line, or whatever–those are costs of production, and investing back into your business is part of growing and improving your business. As far as the grade or quality of particular ingredients, I’m certainly not sophisticated enough to notice it specifically (“ah, there’s the Rolls Royce of blue pigment!”) but like most things in life, there are tiers and grades of products (it reminds me of when I learned about carpet and different pricing tiers and why).
I spoke with a few insiders and they said that it isn’t uncommon to adjust the press from shade to shade or finish to finish. I can speak from experience that the pressure used to press a powder product can sometimes impact how it performs, but it really varies. For example, MAC matte eyeshadows have a much firmer press compared to LORAC matte eyeshadows. MAC matte eyeshadows often perform much better on the lid and are more buildable while still being quite blendable, but I have encountered stiffer/firmer eyeshadows that translate into products that look patchy and do not want to blend out at all. LORAC eyeshadows are so soft that they can feel powdery, dusty, or thin, and they can sometimes sheer out on their own or melt/fade quickly on the lids, but others love them for how blendable they are, as they are also rather forgiving.
I also talked to someone who produces eyeshadow palettes about the packaging, as the Jaclyn Hill palette uses cardboard compared to plastic on the 35-pan and 25-pan palettes Morphe has in their line-up. They actually said that cardboard can be more expensive than plastic. The actual cardboard used for the exterior of the palette also gets dirty very quickly as well (doesn’t seem to wipe off completely). A lot of brands that sell at $40+ have used cardboard (Too Faced, Tarte all come to mind), but I know some people prefer plastic over cardboard and vice versa. What I found odd about the palette at this price point was the lack of a mirror and names printed on the palette (even just on the back, though right under each shade would be ideal with 35 shades!). I think there could also have been more information included about the colors/names chosen on the palette (I mean, the back of it has a lot of real estate) as a more personal touch.

Enlight
Enlight is a brighter, buttery white with warm undertones and metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation that applied a little more unevenly to bare skin than I expected. I also noticed that it always looked starker–whiter and less yellow–in practice on me (which I found odd, given I am warmer in tone!). The texture had a medium density, so it was not too thick but was more firmly pressed in the pan but still had good coverage and wasn’t powdery/dusty. It lasted for seven hours on me.

Silk Crème
Silk Crème is a light-medium peach with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. The color payoff was good, though the soft, lightly powdery texture did not make it as buildable as other shades–it was always a bit translucent. Depending on your skin tone, it may not be obvious at all. This shade lasted for six and a half hours on me.

Sissy
Sissy is a medium pink with cooler undertones and a warmer, golden sheen. The texture was moderately dense and required a firmer hand or a flat, synthetic brush for decent application, as the thicker feel made it harder to spread across the lid without getting unevenness in the shimmer. It had good color payoff, though, and wore nicely for seven hours on me before creasing.

Creamsicle
Creamsicle is a bright, light-medium yellow-orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a more powdery texture, though it was very smooth and finely-milled to the touch. It applied evenly with more semi-opaque coverage as it seemed to diffuse a bit in practice, but I was able to build it up to more opaque coverage with a second layer. The color seemed to darken and mute within a few minutes of applying, so I could not quite get the brightness in the pan to translate on the lid. Hunts
Hunts is a medium-dark copper with strong, warm orange undertones and a mostly matte finish. I noticed this shade had a tendency to absorb any natural oils on my skin and yield a more semi-matte finish–it was just quite sensitive to that. The texture was smooth, finely-milled, and blendable on the lid. It had opaque pigmentation that lasted for seven and a half hours.

Firework
Firework is a rich, medium-dark copper with warm, red undertones and a pearly sheen. The eyeshadow had opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly to the lid, though I found it faded within a few minutes a bit (enough that it was noticeable but the product was still there… just not as intense). The texture was moderately dense, a little thicker but was easy to work with. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me before creasing faintly.

Obsessed
Obsessed is a light beige with a hint of warm, peach undertones and a metallic finish. S.B.N.
S.B.N. is a medium-dark, coppery brown with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The color payoff was opaque, while the texture was slightly looser and drier in the pan, which resulted in some product fallout during application (even after tapping away excess). I think this shade would be better used with a dampened brush to minimize the fallout and improve the overall smoothness in the finish. The color stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me.

Cranapple
Cranapple is a brighter, medium red with strong, warm orange undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was rather dense, and it was harder to apply with regular brushes, though a flat, synthetic brush (I liked MAC 249 for this shade) made it easier to apply than a regular natural-haired brush. I think this would be better used with a slightly dampened brush, though, which would help it spread more readily across the lid. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Twerk
Twerk is a bright, medium-dark violet purple with cooler undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out well. While not opaque in a single layer, it was buildable to it with two layers. The texture was denser and was easier to diffuse along the edges than sheer out or spread across a larger area. This shade stayed on well for seven and a half hours.

Hustle
Hustle is a medium taupe=brown with warmer undertones and a metallic sheen. It had rich color coverage that applied fairly easily to bare skin, though the thicker, denser formula made it a little harder to spread out on the lid without dampening the brush. Meeks
Meeks is a golden bronze with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The eyeshadow had great pigmentation that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out well along the edges. It did have a slightly thicker consistency, so a flat, synthetic brush worked best for spreading the product across the lid. It wore well for eight hours on me before creasing faintly.

24/7
24/7 is a medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had opaque pigmentation with a very dense, smooth consistency that had fine glitter in it. You’ll want to use a heavier touch or denser brush with this shade (or fingertips), though I used my standard MAC 239 with a firmer hand and had no trouble getting product to translate. It had a creamier feel that helped the glittery bits bind with the base color so there was less fallout during application. While worn, I did have some fallout, though the color itself lasted for eight hours on me.

Jada
Jada is a medium-dark teal with cool undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was drier and dusty, and it was not just a bad eyeshadow but a terrible one. I could not believe that it would be included given that every other shade was significantly better than this one. It was sheer, and it did not build u p at all. It did not blend out well, and the edges had an oddly warmer green stain around it. It had completely disappeared within 3 hours of wear.

Diva
Diva is a deep, muted forest green with cooler undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had the greatest density out of all the shades–it was cream-like but very firm and “thick” in a way, which did require a stiffer brush in order to get coverage out of it. I used a flat, synthetic brush (MAC 242) to apply, and I had no trouble getting opaque coverage out of it. I found it easier to apply in small areas and then lightly diffuse around it, as it does not sheer out much if applied opaque to begin with. This shade lasted for eight hours on me but gave me some trouble with fallout while worn.

Soda Pop
Soda Pop is a blackened purple with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that applied better on the lid than it did swatched on my arm. I think the natural oils on my lid (my arm is much drier) helped manipulate it better, which is not always the case as some mattes almost freeze up when they come into contact with oils. It wore well for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Abyss
Abyss is a medium black with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had medium, buildable color payoff with a slightly drier texture that wasn’t difficult to blend out but was more prone to kicking up product in the pan and having a bit of fallout during application. This shade started to fade on me after six and a half hours of wear.

I have quite a bit of experience with Morphe’s eye shadow palettes, having managed to collect and use most of the 35 pan palettes (as well as a couple of the 25 pan palettes). I’ve been turned off enough by them to not buy this one — or any more Morphe products for a plethora of reasons, not the least of which is reverting to my stance of not buying items made in China. Your score of B- is about what I would give all their products on a good day.
Thank you for sharing, Christina!
I do appreciate you reviewing this. My budget is small, and I happen to enjoy Morphe products. Once this is back in stock I may purchase it (a B- is still good for me!), the shade selection is pretty and I know I can make a bunch of different looks. 🙂
No problem, Sarah! I think if you typically use primer or don’t mind that the matte shades are more buildable, you’ll be good. My “feeling” of the palette was a solid B – not perfect but usable, and at the end of the day, functional. It was a lot easier to use without primer than some of Too Faced’s palettes!
Overall this palette did much better than I thought it would given the swatches. There are a lot of shades that I would not use although I love Cranapple. I do have two of the dupes although my dupes appear more shimmery than Cranapple. I also love Royalty but that is available as a single so no worries there. I think that those who pick up this palette will enjoy using it. I just have so many palettes with similar colors to justify purchasing.
It was a lot easier to apply and use than I expected based on swatching alone, which is always a good thing and where it matters most!
Thank you very much for reviewing this one Christine! I know a lot of us will find this helpful. <3
Happy I could help, Ashleigh!
I cannot believe you pulled this off so quickly. Despite having zero interest, I will read every word! Kudos! The pressure was enormous, not to mention the self inflicted aspect, lol. You are beyond amazing. Talk about a labor of love….
Thank you, KJH!
It’s a long review – I don’t know that I could read it more than once again, LOL!
My thoughts exactly! Very interesting review and I completely agree with cost of production.
When is the temptalia collaboration 😉
Thanks for reviewing, haven’t tried Morphe yet, but very curious, heard mixed reviews. I might try the brand one day, but not with this palette. Jumbo palettes like these just overwhelm my brain; I prefer palettes of 8 -15 shades. I would’ve preferred to have far fewer shades of brown and more pops of color, or maybe this jumbo palette broken up into 3 more manageable kits with color themes (brown, green, blue, purple).
Oh, yeah, 35 shades is overwhelming to me as well! It is a lot to process.
Yes! I’ve never gone for a big ES palette yet, they just seem so bulky and inconvenient. I feel like they’re better for makeup artists.
I also think is a nightmare to keep these huge palettes and I’m no beauty expert better fir makeup artist u guess and I wonder if you drop it most of them will brake and I would cry! I love the colors but I prefer the Colourpop Yes Please 12 shades ones and I don’t need many repeat shades but would like to get them when available. Out of stock. 🙁
I find the inclusion of the cool shades to be such an afterthought – particularly in terms of color, layout and adding to the overall cohesive nature of the palette. I’m not a huge fan of hers – her look is way too much of everything for my liking and frankly her personality grates – but in watching her video explanation I get the feeling that the rethinking of 9 shades led to this random inclusion of cool shades. I think she would have been bette off staying all warm or dividing the palette more for a balance of cool and warm to make it look like it was done with some consideration. As to the other criticisms – I couldn’t agree more. I’ll pass on the easy target of random names that don’t make a lot of sense or are only inside jokes to her family, but to not print them anywhere? Why would I care for a back panel of her initials? That’s just laziness on Morphe’s part. It would take a little effort to do a proper layout of color names and pan representations (at minimum) on the back and it wouldn’t have cost any more than it did to print what they ended up with.
There are some obvious combos that come to mind to use them, but the pops of color weren’t as versatile just because they ran a lot cooler and so much of the palette is quite warm.
I’m never keen on palettes that don’t keep info ON the palette, and with the size of this one, there’s room for days – and as you mentioned, it would be unlikely to have cost more to have more printing on it… even if they kept it simple.
Wow, I’m impressed you were able to review so quickly!!! Great job Christine!! I’m glad I passed on this palette and just picked up dupes of the colors that were interesting to me.
Thanks, Wednesday!
Always impressed by your combo of hustle + attention to detail on these massive palette reviews! And “ah, there’s the Rolls Royce of blue pigment!” almost made me do a spit take.
I have no need for this palette, but I genuinely appreciate some of the color choices — like the blackened purple matte, for example. And not surprised to see a MUG Chickadee dupe in there, based on some of the JH tutorials I’ve watched.
The colors selected all make sense to me, too, based on Jaclyn Hill’s preferences and the like. I think you can get a good variety of warmer, neutral looks out of it.
Were this not a Jacklyn collab, and not hyped to the max, it would have made a passable beginner gift palette. It has warm neutrals and the expected nods to ‘today’s’ colors…those look awfully close to me. Personally, it just confirms my desire for the Zoeva matte palette that channels Edward Hopper names. That one has my sensibilities. Your info often lets us refine what we truly want, not chase the latest big thing, and is invaluable.
It’s not bad – I found it a lot easier to work with than I expected. I didn’t have any moments where I was really challenged by blending or getting everything to come together – and a lot of B/C palettes can have moments like that.
It seems to have performed very well.. except for jada.. I was surprised at the grade!! Mine is still on the way (1.5 weeks for shipping.. pfffft) but this makes me excited cause I always trust your reviews! Thanks for reviewing this!
Jada is SO terrible. One of the worst eyeshadows I’ve used this year for sure.
I expedited mine – $23!!! – that is the only reason I got mine quickly. I was actually impressed that Morphe packed and shipped my order the day of launch, to be honest – a lot of brands take 2-5 days just to process!
Not thinking smoky, but natural, I checked urban dictionary. That’s not what they say (of course, of course, consider the source.)
I made sure to watch Jaclyn’s video so I could grab info from that, since she’d be the best source for the whys!
Looks like a good palette – great selection and good price point. There are so many elements in the manufacturing process it is senseless to speculate on costs, techniques, etc. If one doesn’t like the aesthetics or price, move on to the next. Ridiculous to argue Creme de la Mer should be priced as Nivea given similar ingredients.
Yes, it would be very hard to actually know for a fact if the palette cost more or less than any other palette. I think if we look at the cost compared to the 25-pan palettes and figure the formulations are similar enough that $32 vs. $38 is less of a stretch – the $6 is “palatable” to me as the cost of the collaborator/change in packaging (it is different). I did think it was important to try and get a little more clarity on the process, though, since I’m sure many, like myself, do not know the ins and outs of manufacturing.
I don’t disagree with this statement except that JH herself (in her video about the palette) stated that part of the reason for the price increase was the new equipment, which I think is just ridiculous. That’s a cost of doing business & unless all their new palettes with be priced this way, then it’s just a silly thing to say.
As someone who is not a follower of Jaclyn Hill and has never bought anything from Morphe, I think that this palette is decent to good, and something I could actually consider purchasing. There are only a couple of real duds, and for only a little over $1 per shadow, the overall quality is not bad at all, especially if they work better on the eye than swatched. Let’s keep in mind that these shadows are low cost and made in China, obviously you can’t expect them to be the best you’ve ever seen.
One thing that I find really odd is the absence of a matte or satin ivory, and it’s annoying to think that I would need to use an extra shadow to be able to work with a palette of 35! There are also a few shades in there that I would likely not use, but overall I find the selection rather well done for a warm neutral palette, and the more colorful shades on the bottom left give more options for varied looks.
I think a lot of the drama has to do with people feeling very involved when a big beauty guru collaborates with a brand. Personally I don’t have strong feelings about either the influencer or the brand (except the image I have of Morphe is that of a cheap and mediocre brand), so I’m judging this palette on the actual product. I think it would be a very good pick for a beginner, someone who doesn’t have very many eyeshadows yet, or someone who wears warm neutrals regularly. I personally like that there are many transition shades in there, and this is where my collection tends to be lacking. I might never get it though, because I’m not planning to stalk Morphe’s website to grab one as soon as they restock. But I think the criticism has been very harsh. It was well deserved when Becca completely dropped the ball on the eyeshadow palette in the JH collection, because Becca is a high end, expensive brand that typically releases top quality products. Morphe is not. They upped the price because it says “Jaclyn Hill” on the lid and they spent a bit more time formulating the shades. They didn’t suddenly start selling top quality shadows made in Italy.
There are plenty of $40-60 palettes that have scored similarly, too – and frankly, the more shades you cram into a palette, the harder it can be to get close to an A. My gut feeling made me think of the palette as a B, but the scores of Jada just made it harder for everything else to climb close enough to get to a B.
I found the absence of a light beige (matte/satin) to be weird, too, particularly with the two first shades being so light anyway. If there were only 12 shades or less, it wouldn’t be as surprising, but with 35, there was certainly room.
Exactly, how can you find space for 10 different warm transition shades but not a matte beige? I actually watched the video where Jaclyn Hill explains how she picked the shades, and while her rationale for the first two made sense (one warm, one neutral so more skintones have a shimmery highlighter shade that flatter them), I still don’t get how she could skip a matte/satin version.
I thought that Jada was probably what took the overall score down to a B-, and the palette would get a B without it. The quality across shades is actually pretty consistent, based on the grades, with just one big fail.
I’m so with you! The first two could have been pink-beige and warm beige or else matte/satin beige and shimmery beige. I rarely use a matte highlighter BUT often mix a matte beige with a frosty beige to get the right overall sheen for a brow bone highlighter based on the rest of the look.
I use a matte beige/ivory with almost every look as a “blender” shade, to soften the edges above the crease and in the outer corner, so it’s really a problem for me not to have one!
Yes!! I routinely use lighter mattes to tone down other shades. As long as it’s not white-based, they can be versatile.
^ This was such a turn off for me.
When I saw that Enlight and Beam were practically the same and the question popped up was “Why is isn’t one of those shades matte!”. But in general why is there not more skin tone blender shades when your reach is for a larger audience. The have 35 shades slots to work with. let make this a worable palette.
PS. I have yet to get my hand on anything morphe, IMATS Toronto turns their booth into a single line con for the whole day and the shipping rates are high. It’s a matter of not worth my time/money and people that try to swap their products treat them like gold….. lol
you’re exactly right about the price, they also have to give her a cut
What an incredibly thoughtful and insightful review, Christine! I bought the palette because I knew it would sell out but now that I have it I’m just not that impressed. I appreciate the time and energy you put into such careful explanations.
Aw, I wish you liked your palette more since you have it! What is leaving you the least impressed so far?
Better than I would have thought. It is irritating that with that price increase they couldn’t have printed color names on the palette.
That’s how I felt at the end – better than I expected!
I don’t buy from Morphe but this is a decent palette. I think the drama surrounding this palette is silly and over the top but JH opens herself up to criticism and questions because she keeps making statements. She needs help from a lawyer or PR firm.
Sometimes it can be better to say less!
The speed and thoroughness with which you got this review up is *why* you are the Rockstar of beauty bloggers, Christine! Just amazing work there! ?
As for the palette? It does have some really interesting shades in it that may not be so easy to get, but I am not buying it, though. First of all, I’m drowning (myself!) in warm (and cooler!) neutrals. Secondly, I’m not a fan of Morphe. Haven’t heard enough good feedback on them, but more negative or just ‘meh’. Third, other than Pukey, Twerk, and a couple of others, I know I can dupe every single shade within this mega palette. Fourth; too big to easily store and access.
I have no doubt you have plenty of comparable shades already, Nancy!
I’m not going to purchase this palette as it’s just too complex for me and the colors don’t really excite me, but I just wanted to say you are a freakin’ ROCK STAR for this review! Best in the business!
Thank you, Indya!
1 F / 3 C the rest is A & B’s
Not bad. I expected a lot worse outcome.
I bought the palette so I’m very glad!
Definitely not bad! Let us know how you like it, Dua 🙂
Christine, I am so impressed by all the homework you did on this brand, the collaboration, packaging, and eyeshadow production! Even if I had no intention of buying this product, I learned a lot from your review!
Thank you, Zoe!
Since there is so much controversy regarding the ingredients and the individual press of each shade, I truly appreciate you investigated further on technical details by talking to insiders from the beauty industry – and shared all the information in a very objective and non-judgmental way. That’s an excellent job, Christine. It’s investigative journalism applied to makeup! I am very impressed.
Thanks a lot, Alethea 🙂
Hi Christine,
If you don’t post this comment, fine. It’s harsh.
Before I found Temptalia, I would (always a nails-on-a-chalkboard experience) tune into JH. Just getting back into makeup, I felt (naively) well guided by her and purchased a number of Morphe brushes and a few palettes. To be blunt — it was junk. All of it. The lack of quality of every and any single Morphe purchase I have made remains stunning to me.
This collab, backed up by your outstanding review, represents to me the perfect example of all that I despise in marketing — the field in which I earn my living and work in every day. There is no quality here. Just a piggyback on a “celebrity” cult. She will make tons of bank, buyers will get crap, and the cycle will continue.
Sorry to hear that your past experience with Morphe was so poor!
I actually liked this palette overall – not the best all-time by any means but I’d use it again. I personally wouldn’t say that there’s no quality in the palette based on my experience! I’m going to re-read my review because that’s not at all how I wanted to come off.
Christine your review was awesome. I never felt that way reading it. I think Linda was just venting (nothing related to your review). I have some morphe brushes that handles come off…but can’t complain for the price i paid. I’m not into massive palettes such as this anyway. I thought about purchasing but ultimately decided to get more colorpop pressed shadows instead. Christine never let anyone make you second guess what you know you did correctly!!! Once again amazing amazing job as usual!!!!
I agree entirely.
Quantity and decent price don’t necessarily equal a good deal for me. I’d rather spend a little more for fewer things that I really love. But I appreciate all the hard work and dedication by you as always!
That makes sense, Lara!
Thank you, Christine! You are a real champ for going through this rigorous testing. I appreciate you mentioning the little details, like the slight darkening of some the shades when it comes to contact will oils on your lid. I know what to expect when I begin using mine. It explains why in some tutorials it looks more green than teal. I’m excited about this palette now, it sounds like it differs from the palettes I have tried from them, which I detest! Excellent review!
Happy to help, Mandy! Let us know how you like your palette after you’ve had a chance to play!
So much drama in everything this woman do. I don’t like her for some reason (my spirit do not I guess ?), but this is no reason to bash the product. These eyeshadows remind me of BH cosmetics modern mattes, which I love (no allergies for me). They don’t swatch well, but man! Do they show up on my lid… hooded… oily lids? Hunt is a dupe for a orange color in my modern matte by the way.
Happy to hear the BH palette works well for you, Cil! Thank you for the tip!
Thank you so much again for deciding to review this, Christine! I had already decided against buying this pretty early on (more because I refuse to buy from Morphe and very little to do with Jaclyn), so being able to access your archive (that has swatches with consistent lighting!) was a huge help in finding dupes for the handful gone shades I wanted (Pukey, Jada, and Enchanted). Within 20 minutes of your sneak peek the other day I had MUG Desert Sands, Dragonfly, and Enchanted Forest making their way to me! I really appreciate how through and researched your review was too. I think a lot of reviews have been very biased, either love it or hate it, so your impartiality is (as always) incredibly refreshing! Thank you again for being my favorite source on the internet and just a really great human being! 🙂
I’m always happy to help! 🙂 Enjoy your new MUG shades!
This is not for me — it’s many more shades than I’d ever use, and I have dupes of those I like most. But I have to say I learned a lot in your outline of different approaches for eyeshadow formulations. Thanks for taking the time to go into all that.
I’m glad I could share, AB! 🙂
Thank you for such a thorough and honest review! I think I will pass on this palette. I have the Morphe 350S &M palettes and some of those colors look somewhat similar to Hill palette. I also feel that some of the colors in the Hill palette wouldn’t look great on my deep NC44 complexion. I like Morphe for the variety of colors that would be neutrals or monochromatic on my coloring. But I prefer creating my own palette from brands that offer single pans like Make Up For Ever or Makeup Geek. It’s just more fun! I can’t wait to read your review on the other Morphe palettes!
How do you like the quality of the 350S/M palettes? And how would you compare to brands like MUFE and MUG?
I would rate the Morphe palettes as good (without a primer) to better on some of the shadows, if used with a primer. I appreciate a monochromatic palette. But a criticism would be that the colors range so similar, one doesn’t need such a large collection and they could probably be condensed by 1 or 2 rows. I also have the taupe palette (I like the cool golds and bronzes) and I must confess that I tend to use less than 7 of the colors in each palette that I have. I must depot one day.
I would consider the MUFE iridescent and metallic eye shadows to be superior to the Morphe line, as I find their texture to be richer and denser (spongy). My go to colors are I662 (Amber Brown) and ME612 (Silver Brown) as lid colors.
As for MG, I found them to be a nice alternative to MAC eyes shadows that sometimes came up as either chalky or too transparent on my deeper complexion. MG mattes provided more pigment to me, which meant that a color like Chickadee could look good on me without a primer.
I would rank MUFE 1st, MG 2nd, and Morphe a close 3rd to MG.
That is so helpful, ShawnTina!! 🙂 I love hearing from readers who have tried the same products.
So can I hit you up for all your carpet knowledge too? Is there such a thing as a Carpet Guru? ;D I am going to be re-carpeting my new home after I move in and I know nothing. It’s rather frightening.
LOL, I wish! I know my parents are big proponents of spending more on the carpet pad (if you have to pick your battles!), which I followed for my first house. In my second house, I didn’t get to choose, and our feet ACHED when we initially moved because the padding is so much less. I haven’t had good luck with patterned carpet yet (I’ve had it twice and it’s lost its stretch and bubbled up in less than 1 year, even in areas of low traffic!).
But yeah, it is crazy just how much goes into any one thing that someone out there will have ALL the knowledge about and we’re like, “Carpet is carpet, right?? Why is this $20 sq. ft. and this is $2?!”
Good luck!!
Thank you for the advice about padding! I’m not sure I would have thought of that. My biggest issue is that I have a cat who likes to sharpen her claws on the carpet. She knows she shouldn’t do it, so it’s mostly for attention, but it drives me nuts! I will have to be much more diligent once the new carpet is installed. Good thing she’s cute. 😉
Well, I’ll also relay to avoid carpet with loops if your cat might pull them loose. Even if they tell you they won’t come lose from pets, don’t believe them. I have patterned carpet with some loops, and absolutely, those loops catch on Mellan’s nails and threads get pulled up. The one I have in my current home isn’t so bad, but I was constantly giving the carpet a hair cut in my first house. Mellan wasn’t even a TRYING to get the loops, he could just stretch out and catch them.
I think I am just going to go with a shag, since that generally hides the most mess and is most economical. Unfortunately that’s also the same thing cat trees are made out of. 😉
Hope it holds up okay with the cat situation 😉
Pets — gotta love them!
Received this palette today and I love it. Quality is just as good as some of the higher end palettes I own. (Viseart, Shu, CdP, Inglot etc) for under $30 I’m quite pleased. Great review as always, I’ve followed you since the beginning of Makeup Alley. Thanks for all your hard work. The foundation matrix has saved me a multitude of times!
Happy to hear you’re enjoying your palette, Wendy! What shades have you used so far? Any good combos you’ve discovered?
Thank you for reviewing this so fast! I always enjoy your reviews because they are so thorough. I purchased this on launch day. I’m enjoying this palette more than I thought I would. The formulation isn’t my favorite, but I think the shadows have great color payoff for the price. I’m glad to see there are dupes for a few shadows that were on my “need to buy” list.
Yayy!! I liked it more than I expected – and it definitely was pretty easy to work with except that one terrible shade!
I considered purchasing this, but the price jump from the regular 35 pan palettes combined with steep international shipping just turned me right off. I bet I can dupe most of this anyway.
The international shipping/customs fees seem really high, so I can’t ever imagine it being worth it due to that 🙁 I’m sure that some overseas will see it differently since they may be more used to paying the extras on top but $70-100 on this palette (and most palettes) would be hard to justify.
I got this palette and these are fair (a bit generous) reviews. To be perfectly honest, Jaclyn duped me with her videos. I guess I’m a sucker this time but her credibility is shot with me as a consumer. Thank you for being honest in this review!
Sorry to hear that yours was worse, Shannon! 🙁
I’m kind of in love with the warm matte colors in this palette. Do you have recommendations for a really good (blend-able, creamy) matte eyeshadow palette with warm shades included? Especially the mustard-type shades. Thanks in advance!
I don’t know of any that really have mustard-like shades in them offhand. For more go-to matte palettes, the ones that come to mind (in general) are Tarte Tartelette, Viseart (maybe Warm Mattes), Too Faced Natural Matte, UD Naked Basics…
Thank you!
Thanks for your honest review! So many you tubers acted like this was the most amazing palette in the world! It’s hard to know if they are telling the truth because they are friends with Jacklyn. I always trust your reviews.
Happy to help, Anna!
Hi Christine!
I love all your posts and read any opinions you have on products before buying them myself because I often have to order products online. I was wondering if you have any good palette suggestions (preferably found on Sephora) that has a lot of warm (rosy toned), matte shades?
Thanks!
I think the Tarte Tarteist PRO is going to come the closest, maybe the original Tartelette palette? There aren’t a lot of all-matte palettes!
Great! Thanks so much Christine!!! I’ll definitely be looking for those palettes!
You’re a g.d. professional, as always, Christine.
Thank you, Alison!
This is hard work Christine! I think I don’t need to get this palette anymore, I have some in my stash of those shades I gravitate towards. Thank you thank you thank you and love you gazillions! Warm hugs and kisses!
I’m so glad I could help, Yox!
Not loving the mattes but everything else is nice.
There are some hits and some misses!
I read everything but I didnt see you address where is was made. Can you tell me was this made in China or USA ?
It’s listed right on the packaging, which is photographed above!
Thank you so much, I’m Blind 🙂 !! It’s funny Morphe refused to tell me where it was made!!!
I’m sorry, but I don’t speak French but maybe another reader does and can help!
I just had to know what this said lol
Per google translate,
Hello, I am lucky as a Frenchwoman to have received this palette. She looks sublime! I have not tried it yet but I can not wait. Thank you for this great review that has asked for a lot of work and thank you for the names of the makeup that are not listed anywhere.
Thank you for the fast review.. I don’t know how I missed it the last few days. I’m very glad I read your review before purchasing and even more glad that I decided to buy the Cute AF palette instead of this. I own a couple Morphe palettes. The 35k which I terrible.. I hate it. But the 35F is rather good..The shimmer shades are top notch and remind me of City Color Shimmer Shadows (w need to get city color to make a palette with these) The mattes are okay.. A couple are very decent but overall worth $19. Will you be reviewing the taupe palette? I’m curious to see your thoughts on it. And have you considered trying a Juvias Place palette? Ty for your hard work!
No problem, Courtney! Good to hear that the 35F is good. I’m not sure if I will review it or not – the palettes are a real commitment and time sink. I’m drowning in eye palettes at the moment, so definitely not anytime soon (there are a lot of new palettes that take priorit), though.
Thank you so much for saving me my money Christine! As someone who lives overseas, my only exposure to morphe has been through its affiliates (J.H./Manny etc) on Youtube. Based on their reviews you would think Morphe was the second coming. I had been thinking of trying to buy this after watching Jaclyn’s video about it (i create editorial looks on instagram), but after seeing the swatches and hearing your feedback and those of other commentors i am going to save my money for something better.
What a well thought out, detailed, obviously well researched, and honest review! It looks like a lot of work, and i wanted to let you know how much i appreciate your effort and transparency.
This palette is so pigmented and all the color is beautiful and wearable! Never regret to bought this 😀
Just reviewed this palette and the pigmentation was so good, no fall out, but some eyshadow difficult to blend. All the color is so pretty and wearable. No regret after bought this palette 🙂
HI,
I had watched videos about this palette back a little after it came out and even read Christine’s review and at the time I decided against it. But now I’m reconsidering on purchasing it because three palettes, much more expensive (though possibly better quality wise) are causing me to want select my next palette based and a good balance of quality/color scheme/price (in that order of importance). So, do you, Christine or anyone else think that this Morphe x Jacyln Hill palette is better taking into consideration those three criteria than the Huda Desert Dusk, Natasha Denona’s Lila, or (even though I know it’s not out, so we can’t say for sure) Pat McGrath’s Mothership palettes? (As I noted Christine gave Huda & this one the same overall mark B-, but for the dark colors that I like, Morphe x JH’s seems to have better marks.)
