Marc Jacobs The Sky-Liner Holiday 2015 Highliner Eyeliner Set
Marc Jacobs The Sky-Liner Holiday 2015 Highliner Eyeliner Set

UPDATE:  Marc Jacobs Beauty has fixed packaging issues that resulted in the eyeliner formula drying out.  I found the following posted as a “review” on the product listing for the Highliner Eyeliner Set. I also purchased another set after I noticed Sephora restocked, and I can personally confirm that the eyeliners are much improved!  They feel and apply consistently with the better Marc Jacobs Highliners I have used in the past, not dry at all.  All seven shades were creamy and glided-on without tugging. Here’s hoping the full-sized eyeliners make it back soon as well.  Of course, I would have preferred to have seen MJB make the same overture as Bite Beauty did earlier this year and resend the non-defective set to customers who purchased a defective set. The review below has NOT been updated to reflect the update at this time.

Hi Beauty Insiders,

Thank you for your review. The Sky-Liner Petite Highliner Gel Eye Crayon collection that is now available at Sephora is completely new and updated. Recently, Highliner experienced a temporary production issue with the cap—it wasn’t airtight, and was causing the formula to dry out. This issue is now fixed. Marc Jacobs Beauty pulled all Highliners from stores, reproduced them, tested them, and replaced them, including The Sky-Liner Set. We are so sorry if you have had a bad experience. We are confident that we have addressed the issue and we hope that you continue to love Highliner.

The Marc Jacobs Beauty Team

Marc Jacobs Holiday 2015 The Sky-Liner Highliner Gel Crayon Set ($48.00 for 0.07 oz.) includes seven, travel-sized eyeliners; two shades are limited edition and exclusive to the set, while five are from the permanent range. I don’t see it on Sephora currently, but it is still available through Marc Jacobs directly. I was really disappointed by the set, because every single eyeliner was dry as a bone when swatched to the point where just trying to swatch it resulted in all but one of the eyeliner’s tips breaking off. After the tip broke, the eyeliners were soft and creamy, which is why it’s so frustrating that the exterior coating to the pencil is so bad that it completely impedes the product’s performance. The one eyeliner that didn’t break still remains firmer and harder to use after three uses. This makes it harder to rate, because unless you break off the tip, they’re difficult and poor-performing, but since by the nature of just how firm they were, they inevitably broke (without me trying at all; in fact, I was trying NOT to!) and were much better. I’ve found that the full-sized, permanent formula has similar issues where some shades are creamy and easy-to-apply from the get-go and others are drier, firmer (and some have never gotten better for me). This inconsistency is the worst part about an otherwise impressive formula that wears nine to ten hours and comes in an assortment of more unique shades (some are more typical shades, of course). I didn’t have such significant texture issues with last year’s set. That being said, you will find the scores reflecting that these are not of the same quality as others I have tried (primarily in the overall quality and texture scores).

In the set, each pencil contains 0.37g/0.01 oz. while the full-sized eyeliners are 0.5g/0.01 oz. When I convert grams to ounces (using Google), 0.37g is really 0.0131 oz. and 0.5g is really 0.0176 oz. So this set contains 0.0917 oz. worth of eyeliner, or $130.26 worth of eyeliner. Or, if you’re not apt to finish products, for less than the cost of two shades, you get to try seven.

In the Buff is described as a “champagne shimmer.” It’s a light-medium, golden champagne with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had semi-sheer color payoff in one stroke, and it was fairly buildable to mostly opaque coverage. The texture was firm initially, but after the tip broke off, it was creamier and easier to apply. It wore well for nine hours on me. Smashbox Bubbly (P, $18.00) is lighter (95% similar). Sephora Girl Talk (PiP, $10.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Holiday Time (LE, $22.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood (Metallic) (PiP, ) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Aurora (Illuminate) (LE, ) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Estee Lauder Pearl (P, $28.00) is lighter, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Express-Oh! is described as a “espresso shimmer.” It’s a blackened brown with subtle, gold pearl and a more satin-like sheen overall. It had semi-opaque coverage but was very, very stiff to work with and tugged on the lash line. This was the only pencil that didn’t have the tip break on me just by swatching lightly on my arm, and after three uses, it still remains pretty firm to use. It wore for ten hours without fading or smudging. MAC Rich Experience (P, $20.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Demolition (P, $22.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Crave (DC, $22.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Burberry Chestnut Brown No. 02 (P, $29.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Stag (LE, $22.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Dark Force (P, $22.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Buxom Here's My Number (P, $17.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). NARS Last Frontier (P, $24.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). MAC Past Twilight (DC, $16.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Glitterbug (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Burberry Midnight Brown (P, $27.00) is lighter (90% similar). Wayne Goss Rich Hazel (P, $14.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). MAC Long Espresso (P, $17.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Lush (P, $20.00) is less shimmery, less glossy (90% similar). ColourPop Stomper (P, $7.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Mole Brown (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Fenty Beauty In Big Truffle (P, $22.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty (Earth)quake (P, $25.00) is brighter (95% similar). Sephora Diving in Malaysia (18) (DC, $10.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). NARS Last Frontier (P, $24.00) is less shimmery, cooler (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Boys & Berry is described as a “boysenberry shimmer.” It’s a muted, dark plum purple with warm undertones and gold and eggplant-hued shimmer. It had so-so pigmentation in a single stroke, which was somewhat buildable but never opaque on the lash line. It had the same frustrating, firmer texture that snapped the tip off and revealed a creamier center. It lasted for ten hours. MAC Strong Willed (P, $20.00) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (95% similar). Tarina Tarantino Ultraviolet (DC, $15.00) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). Sephora Love Affair (DC, $10.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Rockstar (P, $22.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Macroviolet (P, $16.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Bitter in Glitter (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Stila Black Amethyst (P, $22.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Sephora Bling Bling (P, $14.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). bareMinerals 6AM (LE, $15.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

(Stone)fox is described as a “metal gray.” It’s a dark, warm gray with silver sparkle and shimmer. The version in the set seemed to have more shimmer than the one I have in the full-size. The texture was firm until the tip broke off (just lightly swatching!! after the first broke, I was trying even harder not to break them, ha!), and the interior part of the portion was creamier but had some texture to it due to the amount of sparkle. It had semi-opaque coverage that built up to opaque coverage after two to three layers. It lasted for nine hours with some shimmer fall out.
Urban Decay Uzi (P, $22.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Chanel Gris Scintillante (P, $29.00) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Little Black Bow (DC, $16.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). bareMinerals Steadfast Slate (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Stila Triggerfish (P, $22.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Coin Operated (LE, $17.00) is lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Moonspoon (LE, $22.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Steelpoint (P, $17.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Clay (P, $17.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). MAC Palm Tree (LE, $17.50) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (85% similar). Buxom I'll Be Waiting (P, $17.00) is lighter (85% similar). Sephora Starry Sky (DC, $10.00) is cooler (85% similar). MAC Counterfeit (P, $17.00) is lighter (80% similar). MAC Zenith (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (80% similar). Urban Decay Oil Slick (P, $22.00) is less shimmery, darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Blacquer is described as a “black.” It’s a deep black with neutral undertones and a satin finish. The consistency was firm, and even after the tip snapped off, it wasn’t as creamy as the full-sized version I have (which is VERY creamy!). It lasted for ten hours, at least, but I wish the texture and color payoff were more comparable to the full-sized version. MAC Point Black (P, $25.00) is less glossy (95% similar). Zoeva Black to Earth (P, $7.50) is lighter, glossier (95% similar). KVD Beauty Skully (P, $18.00) is lighter, less glossy (95% similar). Ardency Inn Black (P, $19.00) is less glossy (95% similar). Too Faced Black (PiP, $20.00) is glossier (95% similar). MAC Superfly (P, $17.00) is lighter (95% similar). Sephora Black Lace (DC, $10.00) is lighter (95% similar). KVD Beauty Puro Amor (PiP, $10.00) is lighter (95% similar). Make Up For Ever M10 Matte Black (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Black Market (P, $22.00) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (85% similar). Chanel Black Wood (945) (P, $34.00) is warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

(Wave)length is described as a “midnight blue.” It’s a medium-dark, navy blue with a pearly shimmer. It had semi-sheer coverage in a single stroke, which was buildable to semi-opaque pigmentation after two to three passes. The texture was firm until the tip broke off, and then the center was creamier and easier to use without tugging on the lash line. It wore well for nine and a half hours on me. Make Up For Ever #3L (P, $19.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). ColourPop DTLA (P, $7.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Melt Cosmetics Santos (P, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Goddess (PiP, $22.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). MAC Blue Stripe (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Ody(sea) is described as a “teal green.” It’s a bright, green-leaning teal with cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage, and the texture was firm and comparable to the firmness I experienced with the full-sized version, though after the tip snapped off while swatching, it was very creamy but almost thick to the point where it layered on itself unevenly. It wore for ten hours on me. MAC New Marine (P, $17.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Lancome Paradis (P, $23.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Whirl(pool) (P, $25.00) is less shimmery, more muted (90% similar). Makeup Geek Ocean (DC, $9.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). I wonder if softening them with a little heat (using the good ole’ lighter trick) would help some of these?

I have the other holiday set and I find that some of them are so dry they don’t adhere to my waterline AT ALL. I usually don’t have this problem with any eyeliners (regardless of brand or price) so that was disappointing.

I like the convenience of these being twist ups instead of actual pencils but I can’t help but wonder if it’s detrimental to their performance as they tend to dry out.

WARPAINTandUnicorns Avatar

I’ve tried that with other gel based liner and they just harden up more. Basically you need to add more water/moister back in, rather than dry it out furthur with the heat.

Yeah, they pulled ALL the liners off the shelf last month in store as well saying that they were getting new packaging. I don’t know of too many brands that would do this honestly instead of trying to sell off the old stock first so kudos on them.

Katherine T. Avatar

Wow, how disappointing!! I can tell by the swatches how dry the outer layer is, my eyes are just wincing thinking about that pencil dragging across my lid, with little dry hard chunks breaking off and getting into my eye. It’s a shame you have to break off the tip because these liners small, and at this price, you don’t want to lose any product. It’s a shame because the colors are pretty. Can you sharpen the tip to remove the outer layer?

Neonails Avatar

Wow, this is pretty disappointing! I missed out on last year’s MJ set, so I was hoping to pick up this year’s after discovering how nice the Blacquer shade is. Looks like I can save money & hope for next holiday! 😛

NeoNails Avatar

It’s so disappointing! I got the Blacquer as a Point Perk a few months ago, and I didn’t notice any major dryness. It’s really unfortunate that the actual set is so dried out, because that’s how others might try the pencils and they’ll think all will be like that.

Nicole Avatar

I have been still thinking about this for the two LE shades and Wavelength. I have all the others in full size and they are fantastic. Well, I can stop longing for it now. 🙂 What a shame though. I just can’t wrap my brain around why the quality isn’t consistent.

Nicole Avatar

Oh no! I was hoping to get Brown-out soon. I hope they haven’t changed the formula or something. I also hope this doesn’t run true for the lips set because I got that one and I really like the full sized lippies quite a bit.

kwmechelle Avatar

I’ve been waiting on your review of these. These got pretty bad reviews on the Sephora site so your review seems spot on. So sad, though. I missed out on last year’s set & thought this set was a bargain with the cute little pouch. Oh well! Thanks for your review 🙂

Nancy T Avatar

It’s a legit RIP-OFF. $48 for tips snapping off and having noticeable application issues? I’ll stick with Sephora Contour pencil eyeliners. Easy PASS. And I feel sad because I was seriously considering this set, so yes, I’m bummed. ?

Lizzie Avatar

I have this set in a box to return to Sephora as I type this. I really wanted to love these. It was such a great price. Nice colors and I don’t own a single Marc Jacobs eyeliner but 3 of the liners broke on me and were gooey and tar like pulled on my hand while just searching them. Not smooth like I expected. Massive quality control problem here. I’ve swatched full sized eyeliners of these in a Sephora store which were super smooth and lasted forever on my hand but they’re so expensive. I thought this was a deal but I was wrong.

Helene Avatar

What a pity. I would have bought this and would have been so disappointed and a bit angry. The full size liners I have from MJB are lovely, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to get some more colours, just one would be a double, the gorgeous (Stone)fox.
Oh, well, money saved for something else. It’s not like there are just a few options for the holidays 🙂

Nika2799 Avatar

The only one that broke on me when I swatched mine was Ody(Sea).I purchased this before your review was up.I read your review and I opened the set right away and swatched them all.Maybe it just varies set to set.

Stacy Avatar

The day this set became available on Sephora, I took a leap and ordered it (I couldn’t stand the thought of missing out on it, like I did last year’s). And honestly, Christine, I wonder if by a stroke of rotten luck, you just got a clinker? Because I haven’t had the same issue of dryness or the tips breaking. They were creamy and smooth-stroking from the first swipe (Of course that doesn’t speak well for the product if you can’t count on the quality being consistent. Pretty inexcusable, really). I also think that for me, not being as sure-handed with bold colors as others, the fact that a few shades have to be built up, rather than being fully opaque, gives me a little more confidence. Honestly, I think I just lucked out all the way around, but either way, I’m really happy with this set. I’m sorry you weren’t.

Maribeth Avatar

Looks like Sephora is sold out, but in line with your review, the customers were not satisfied with the product either – many returned. Hopefully MJ will fix the problem and re-release a better lot. I hope so, as I was going to head on over to Sephora to purchase the set- for me, lol. I bought “Plumage” & loved it & missed last year’s set, so I won’t miss this one. Thank you for your review. You are pretty astute, Miss Christine. I always check this site first before making a purchase, & appreciate your honest, reliable reviews.

Joyce Avatar

I purchased mine from the VIB rouge sale from the Canadian warehouse. hmmm. I wonder if they will exchange the set and not make me pay the 20% difference. hmm. I would call them but I’ve heard of mixed experience with their call centre. Not sure what I am going to do.

Lulle Avatar

I agree with you Christine, if they detected a quality issue they should refund or send new liners to people who bought the faulty ones. I have a full-size Highliner that’s so hard that it hurts to use it. I’m not buying anything else from Marc Jacobs, since they value me so much that they have no intention to make it right by me!

Christine Avatar

I didn’t update any of the photos/swatches to reflect the way they swatch now – but quality wise, it seemed the same to me compared to last years (actually, possibly better as all seven were equally creamy/smooth). I didn’t re-test the 2nd new set for wear, though.

Mariella Avatar

Broken tips? Not good! I have 2 of the original MJ liners and they are very good but this line should not have any glitches or broken tips and while this little set seems a good value, MJ’s pencils are pricey and, IMO, should be perfect and all should garner an A at his prices!

Katherine T. Avatar

Nice to know the QC issue has been fixed. I’m glad MJ acknowledged the problem and pulled the sets from the market. And yes, BITE raised the bar when they re-sent customers a new, reformulated lipstick. MJ is much bigger than BITE and makes more money, so it would be nice if they could do the same. Or at least give free sets to the customers who couldn’t get their money back.

Gina Avatar

My problem with this set was the four out of six I have tried, except the teal and blue ones, the liner part completely fell out, so I had to put it back into the pencil part, not acceptable for the high end brand.

Gina Avatar

The original one. I can’t stand that I had to pick up the liner part from the carpet and put back in every time I use it. Never had this kind of problem with any liner.

Anne Avatar

I just got my set today! I had wanted to try the Marc Jacobs formula for a while and this was too good a deal to pass up, at least once I found out it was a one-off problem. I got it off the Marc Jacobs site itself as I didn’t know if it would be restocked at Sephora and they had a notice on their site about later shipping due to having to put out a new, non-messed up batch. They’re very smooth!

Nicole Avatar

Now that they’re fixed, I really really wish this was something I needed. I don’t love the color of Express-Oh! or Blacquer, but the others are so pretty I would totally overlook it (or give them away). It’s just that I almost never use eyeliner and for someone who doesn’t use them, I sure have a lot already.

Nicole Avatar

Yeah, I probably will. There’s always the idea that “if I buy it, maybe that’ll prompt me to use it more often”, lol, but in this case I doubt it will. Anyways, I do have plenty of good eyeliners that are just waiting for me!

KJH Avatar

Are they calling this fixed? Fie on them. Makes me glad that MJ liners last < 8 secs on me, and that's not an exaggeration. Guess I don't need to bemoan not having these swell shades.

Kirsten Avatar

I bought a couple of the full size ones this summer and already exchanged them once. 🙁 I wonder if they’ll let me exchange them again, once they’ve fixed the problem with the full size ones.
