LORAC Mega Pro 4 Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Mega Pro 4
LORAC Mega Pro 4 Mega Pro Palette ($59.00 for 0.45 oz.) contains a whopping 32 eyeshadows housed in a slim, cardobard palette. There were some nicer shades in the palette but plenty of so-so ones and a few total misses. I tend to find that with the exception of the original Pro palettes (so mostly the Mega Pros), the formula runs more powdery/dusty and thin that it just rarely performs impressively on bare skin (which is how I test other powder eyeshadows). I did try working with the palette and some of the weaker shades over LORAC’s own primer, and they were somewhat better–maybe 10-15% improvement–but nothing I’d want to reach for again willingly myself, even with the help of primer. The eyeshadows just didn’t come together as well as they could have, and even the richer shades had a tendency to look more muted on the lid than in the pan over primer. It’s not the worst palette I’ve ever used, but LORAC has and could do better.
P.S. — LORAC has a habit of reusing names for colors that are not remotely similar, which I do find bizarre (particularly reusing shades from one Mega Pro to another without continuity), which is why some shade names include “Mega Pro 4” to specify that they are from this particular edition.

Cotton
Cotton is a bright white with cooler, blue undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer. The consistency was smooth, slightly dusty in the pan, but it blended out fairly well on the lid and did not have much fallout. It wore well for seven hours on me.

Cool Taupe (Mega Pro 4)
Cool Taupe (Mega Pro 4) is a light beige with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. While unbelievably silky to the touch, it was moderately powdery in the pan and on the lid, so there was some chalkiness when it blended out with deeper shades. Butterscotch is a light-medium, peachy yellow with warm undertones and a matte finish. Lotus
Lotus is a muted, medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had sheer coverage paired with a dry, stiff, and unworkable texture. What minor amount of product adhered to the skin was gone within three hours of wear. The quality was galling–I cannot believe any reputable brand would attach their name to something this awful.

Fairytale
Fairytale is a silvery lavender with neutral-to-cool undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had semi-sheer coverage at best. The texture was drier and looser and seemed to lack binders, so it tended to apply unevenly and sheered out too readily. It had a ton of fallout (even tapping away excess) during application and during the short wear of five and a half hours.

Plum (Mega Pro 4)
Plum (Mega Pro 4) is a soft, medium mauve with warmer undertones and a satin sheen. The consistency was soft and smooth to the touch but rather powdery, which did not make for great application. The eyeshadow sheered out too quickly from medium coverage (and as a result, it was not buildable). It wore for just over six hours on me.

Seems like the palette wasn’t too bad except for that last row. As I was scrolling through, I kept thinking, “I don’t have any colors similar to this,” which is surprising given the number of eye shadow palettes I have.
I’ve been using this palette for the last 3 days, worn about 9 shades over primer, and the pigmentation and performance seems to vary greatly by shade. So far, Fairytale (F)) has been the worst, not sure if it’s fixable unless you use glitter glue. And a couple of the taupes were very sheer, powdery and faded quickly. But the matte pink was very good, and a couple of the grays were ok if you don’t mind a sheerer look. There are some very pigmented shades in here (like 2 of the bronze neutrals) but overall, the pigment here is soft. Since +90% of the shadows in my stash are pigmented, I’m really enjoying the change of pace here –it’s hard to over do anything, so great for office looks, and the shadows are pairing very well with bold blushes//lips, which I plan to wear a lot of in fall/winter.
I love your comment. I don’t have this palette yet, but I think I might buy it. I think it’s good to not always have tons of pigment. I think it is nice to have more natural looking makeup, day to day, so the fact that some of these are a little more sheer, actually appeals to me. I love Lorac shadows.
Glad I could help!
The whole reason I buy Laroc is because it isn’t highly pigmented but more so than drugstore brands. My philosophy is that eyeshadow should soften and blend as the day goes on, not get darker. Other brands get darker a few hours after applying. In fact, on two or three occasions I noticed colleagues wiping their eyelids even though they don’t wear makeup. Was that a hint…?
So happy to see this palette review up. It definitely saved me some pennies as I was dancing around this!
I have to agree that Lotus is a truly low-quality shadow. Such a shame. So far I’ve been really loving Unicorn, though it’s a shade I wish I had during the springtime!
Lotus is sooo bad!
Hmm, I was on the fence about getting this one, now I’m really not sure! I have the first 3 Mega
pro palettes ( all which I use and like) and the collector in me wants the 4th. But the practical and fiscally responsible me (which doesn’t surface often lol) is now telling me to really think about whether I’d actually get my money’s worth. There are so many holiday palettes out there and storage has become an issue for me so I have to be somewhat picky. Would you pass?
Well, I don’t like the palette – I think it’s pretty shoddy, so I can’t recommend it, personally!
Hii! I am looking for a palette that has blue, green, gray and black colors in it. Which one would you recommend me? I was thinking about this one but after reading the reviews I was dissapointed :/
What’s your price point? I’m not even sure if there’ll be a suggestion, but a price range would help me look 🙂
There aren’t too many dominated by that type of color scheme so building your own might be the best 🙁
Sometimes a shoddy release in a series really helps me break that weird compulsion to own “all” of a collection. Urban Decay Vice 3 *almost* did it but the color scheme spoke to me. Vice 4, however, I was like nope. Don’t like the colors and it’s only a B. I also own all of the Mega Pros but when I saw the promo pics with all those pale shades, I almost breathed a sigh of relief bc I knew Lorac did terrible pastels and that I could most likely pass on this. The C+ review only confirms it.
I think you are my soul sister because I, too, have the same compulsion to own all in a series collection. Case in point: I’m trying to fight off the urge to buy all 3 of Lorac’s desert, mountain, ocean palettes. I don’t care for the ocean palette but it’s weird to me to leave it behind. Good to know I’m not a freak! Lol!
Somehow, I just knew deep down that this one was going to turn out to be one gigantic “meh”. These shades are not only highly dupable for the most, but exist in most of us makeup connoisseurs BASIC shade range! Therefore, this is quite a yawnfest.
*for the most part,….Aaaarrrrgghh!
I love your eye looks! I very nearly bought this, then decided against it at the last minute. I’ve been wondering ever since if I’d regret not getting it. I love the color selection in theory, but the quality is so all over the place. I’m glad I listened to my inner voice and didn’t waste my money.
Thank you, Rachel!
That’s always the problem, isn’t it? Christine does such fabulous eye looks, even with the most mediocre products, that it makes you want to rush out and buy them anyway. I’ve learned to be guided more by her ratings than by the looks she manages to create even with products of poor quality.
I completely agree, Mariella. 🙂
OUCH! BURN!
Thanks, Christine! Some decent shades, but you know…to be premium, to earn a place on the top shelf you can’t make the cut with a C-. You have to be quality all the way. D- and Fs? Ooof. I’d be ashamed.
Is it me, or is the push for release after release creating even worse offerings than ever? I was piqued by this palette, and now I’ll put that cash happily back into my wallet.
LORAC has always been a little more of a miss for me than a 100%, slam-dunk brand, so I’m not overly surprised at this, particularly given some of the types of muted hues they chose here.
I religiously watch for your reviews before buying a product, with that said, what is your 100% slam dunk for eye shadow palettes?
Well, it’s a pass for me. This review validated my choice. At first glance, none of the color stuck out for me so I was going to check your review. I own MP2 and MP3. I wanted MP1 when it was out but when they re-advertised it over the summer, I passed (they should’ve made more at the time). Then, when you have the longevity of 7 hours, that’s not going to do it for me. For some reason, Lorac fades by the end of my 8 hour shift. So, I like shadows that can give me 10 hrs of wear over primer, plus I work out during the day, and Lorac and Too Face shadows can’t pull it. But Urban Decay has. I dug up my Naked 2 and it still there. The highlight faded a tad but everything else is like I freshly put it on. I use to have impulse buy or buy because it’s pretty but now, I have to be smart about my money.
Yeah, I find LORAC isn’t the longest wearing either, with or without primer (better over primer, lol) – like you said, even with primer, it fades on you!
Sounds like an easy skip!
Well, now I don’t feel so bad that this isn’t available to me here in Canada! There were a few shades in this that I really liked the look of but some of them have pretty dismal ratings and the others – well, I have dupes. That rich purple is lovely but I’ve got NARS Kauai, so I’m covered even for that beauty.
Did an intern design this? The color selection is so strange.
I really enjoy the color selection! For me it’s unique, and a refreshing move away from the thousand warm-toned neutral palettes that have been released this year.
I do understand what you are saying about the formula but I have gotten very good results using both UD and Nars primers.
The biggest drawing point for me was the shades included. I have all the neutral and warm based palettes that I could ever use so I felt as if I could justify this purchase because of the unique colors. Don’t get me wrong though, if Viseart released another $49 all inclusive palette like the one that is available through Sephora and if it had a variety of these types of shades I’d much prefer it.
Hey, as long as you love it, I’m good! 🙂
I knew this wouldn’t do well. my bad for jumping the gun. It gets a tad of redemption with primer, but compared to the other Loracs I hauled this year, is glaringly inferior. Clearly, I’m on a roll of bad choices, because ColourPop yin to my yang is even worse! And mermaid glazen eye gloss is a disco ball. (Oil Slick is decent, though.) Gotta laugh at yourself sometime, and this is my week. As to this one, will use it, but it won’t be the workhorse of muted color I thought it would be.
Yep, this is a definite “no” for me. I have so many shadows and palettes and there isn’t anything here that is remotely unique and original and quite a few with poor performance. I will save my money for something more unique and better quality.
What a mammoth effort Christine, to review and rate this colossal palette!
I have a feeling that these big palettes are not as viable now as, say, five years ago. They are too bulky and contain shades that don’t suit everyone, therefore they are redundant.
This particular palette has a few similar shades on the paler side and the ratings are just not consistently good. A couple of nice shades – the teals.
I’m not inspired by the color combination in this palette, and seeing how the quality is mediocre at best, it’s an easy pass!
Thanks for saving me some money Christine! You were able to come yup with some nice eye looks, $59 is a lot of money for quality that questionable. I had been wanting this one, but now I’m glad I waited for your review!
Thank you, Cat!
I’ve never tried a Lorac product, and I’m certainly not going to start with this one!
Being an big Lorac fan, I just can’t say no to most of their “special” palettes. When I saw the sneak peek picture I thought I would pass with no hesitate. After I read your reviews, I was still insistent. But when I finally swatched it in the store, I can’t help myself being a sucker. ( T_T sadly)
I haven’t used it yet, maybe just for collection. LOL.
Christine did you go back and try the palette again? I swear I saw an f review on this before!
I wore every single shade and tried over half the palette over LORAC’s own primer before writing this review – I thoroughly tested and gave it multiple chances using different techniques, brushes, and even primer to perform decently 🙂 It’s also rated C+ not an F – not sure where you’re seeing this is rated an F?
I feel like this is like the weird Berenstain bears memory thing. Only it’s just me ?♀️ Thanks for replying!
Hi Christine,
I love your reviews, and wanted to give my feedback on this one. It seems to me that your rating was really harsh and the ratings inconsistent. For example, you’d say more bad things on one thing than another and the one with more bad things got a worse grade than than the one which had more positives.
It depends on the particular issue and how that translates into the rating. An example might be how powdery or dusty an eyeshadow is – some are just powdery in the pan, others appear dry on the lid, and others sheer out as soon as you try to blend them or have tons of fallout. Something being dusty in the pan is a much lower offensive than something that doesn’t adhere to the lid at all! I have a long list of characteristics (positive and negative) and the range of +/- points they can receive – the same process I use for all products! This is a large palette, so while I strive to be in-depth since this was not a brief review, some shades made have merited more to say than others or I may have already said enough in the previous shades so as not to repeat myself over and over again in shades in the end.
You’d have to give me a specific example so I could explain in greater detail, which I’m happy to do! 🙂 I’m a bit confused since you said that “the one with more bad things got a worse grade than the one which had more positives” – that makes sense on a high-level? More bad things = lower rating, more positives = higher rating?
I personally found this to be a poor palette, though, and I thought a C+ was actually better than I would have given (just “off the cuff”)!
The looks you created are so beautiful I want this palette anyway lol
I wouldn’t pay $60 for this at this grade, but it’s on sale at Ulta for $35, do you think it’s worth it at that price point? I recently threw away all my old palettes (they were VERY old) and I only have the Urban Decay Ultimate Basics.
For me, it’s too much work, so I’d never reach for it.
