Huda Beauty Mercury Retrograde Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Mercury Retrograde
Huda Beauty Mercury Retrograde Eyeshadow Palette ($67.00 for 0.59 oz.) is a new, 18-shade palette housed in a translucent, plastic component with a large mirror and a mix of finishes. The matte shades were more powdery with coverage that ranged from medium to opaque, some built up more readily than others, and a few seemed to be drier and look that way applied.
Most of the shimmers had a more emollient quality to them–like a cream-powder hybrid–but performed and felt like powders once they were applied to the lid. Those worked better with flat, synthetic brushes, which picked up the creamier texture better and more evenly for application.

Cosmic
Cosmic is a bright, light-medium pink with subtle, cool undertones and a metallic sheen. It had a more emollient texture, creamy but not overly wet, and seemed to go on more powder-like once it came into contact with my skin. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with a second. The eyeshadow lasted well for eight hours on me before creasing.

Utopia
Utopia is a medium coral with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had buildable pigmentation from semi-opaque to opaque in two layers, while the consistency was soft, lightly powdery, and sheered out a touch when initially applied. It stayed on nicely for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Ultraviolet
Ultraviolet is a light-medium purple with cool undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff that was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The texture felt smooth, emollient, and more cream-like in the pan, but it seemed to apply more like a powder as there was no real dry down and the edges remained blendable. It wore well for eight hours before I noticed slight fading.

Nebula
Nebula is a medium-dark lavender with subtle, cooler undertones and flecks of silver, gold, and lavender glitter. It had an emollient texture where the base felt almost wet to the touch, and you could see the product move from side to side a bit when pressed firmly with a brush or fingertip. It had semi-opaque to opaque coverage that dispersed fairly evenly in a single layer. There was minimal fallout during application, and it stayed in place fairly well for eight hours with light glitter travel.
This shade had larger particles of plastic glitter, which often comes with a warning that it isn’t intended for use on the immediate eye area, though we are seeing more and more brands marketing products with plastic glitter for usage on eyes and having no warning (though nothing to my knowledge has actually changed).

Mercury
Mercury is a blackened teal base with flecks of blue-teal shimmer and sparkle. The texture was more emollient and cream-like, which helped the sparkles bind with the underlying base color, but I did find that the edges were harder to diffuse and could look a bit ragged. It was harder to manipulate around fine lines, like my inner lid area as opposed to my outer lid area. It stayed on well for eight hours before creasing slightly and didn’t give me issues with fallout.

Haze
Haze is a medium aqua with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable color coverage but was best applied over an eyeshadow primer (preferably one that’s a bit more hydrating). The texture was soft and finely-milled with light powderiness in the pan, but it didn’t seem to have fallout during application.
The issue I had with it was that it seemed to be a drier formula and emphasized my skin texture a bit, which made it harder to blend with other shades. It wore decently for seven hours before fading noticeably on me.

Galaxy
Galaxy is a brighter, light-medium pink with strong, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage that was hard to build up, and it was best applied with a flatter, firmer brush, which picked up the product and distributed it more evenly.
The texture felt lightly creamy with some slip, more cream than powder by initial touch, but it felt and acted more like a powder on my lid (never had a “dry down” where it set, it remained blendable along the edges but didn’t feel cream-like any longer). This shade stayed on nicely for seven and a half hours before fading visibly.

Momentum
Momentum is a light-medium peach with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. Supermoon
Supermoon is a pale white with cooler, iridescent blue flecks of sparkle and shimmer throughout. The texture felt more loosely-pressed in the pan, but it also seemed to have a lot of silicone to it, which resulted in chunkier, flakier bits of product that were difficult to press and work onto my skin.
I tried different brushes and fingertips, and the most workable way to use it was all over the lid with a fingertip, which helped to warm up the product and smooth it out. It had medium coverage, and the finish was described as “Sheer Multi-Reflective,” so perhaps a bit more pigmented than marketed. It wore well for eight hours but had light fallout over time.

Vortex
Vortex is a muted, deeper purple with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. The consistency felt drier with moderate powderiness and light fallout during application. It had medium to semi-opaque coverage that did not build up well.
I felt like every time I tried to use this, it made the end result look worse as it just didn’t blend out well and didn’t layer nicely with other shades in the palette (seemed to bring out skin texture/make everything appear drier). The color lasted decently for seven hours before I noticed fading.

Hot Mess
Hot Mess is a medium, reddish-berry with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque, while the texture was soft to the touch but moderately powdery, so there was a bit of fallout during application. I’d recommend tapping off excess into the pan and using a gentler touch overall. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Supernova
Supernova is a light-medium, reddish-copper base with flecks of cooler pink sparkle throughout. It had good color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly to my lid, but it was thinner and didn’t seem to be as reflective once applied. The texture was lightly emollient, thin, and more firmly-pressed in the pan–a bit more cream-powder than a true powder eyeshadow. It wore nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

Karma
Karma is a muted, medium-dark coral with warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff in a single layer, which applied evenly and smoothly to bare skin. The texture was soft, finely-milled, and dusty in the pan but was easy to work with and didn’t sheer out too readily. It lasted well for seven and a half hours before showing signs of fading.

Gold Glitch
Gold Glitch is a bright, light-medium copper with warmer, brownish undertones and flecks of gold and pink sparkle paired with a metallic finish. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, denser texture that was a bit thick, but it adhered evenly and smoothed out well with fingertips or a flat, synthetic brush. The finish was described as a “Sheer Multi-Reflective,” and it was by no means sheer–sadly, it was actually one of the best shimmers in the palette otherwise! It stayed nicely for eight hours before fading and had a touch of fallout over time.

Frazzled
Frazzled is a brighter, medium copper with strong, warm undertones and flashes of green and gold sparkle over a metallic finish. It had a smooth, more cream-like texture that moved subtly in the pan when pushed or heavily pressed, but it acted more like a powder once it came into contact with my skin. Of the shades with a similar texture, this felt a bit firmer and a touch stiffer, so it definitely was best used with a flat, synthetic brush. It wore well for eight hours on me before creasing a bit.

I’m so on the fence about this and sadly after reading it I’m even *more* conflicted! I can’t decide between this and the more colorful Pat McGrath palette to use my Rouge discount on. I already grabbed the pinkier one and it’s beautiful it I adore the Gold Glitch type of formula.
Ohh get the pat McGrath one! The vr emerald shade is amazing, and worth the whole palette. I bought this huda one (before Christine’s review Came out) and I returned it the next day cause every look came out garish and ugly. But I’ve used the pat McGrath one and not regretted it. Since you can’t return the items bought with the reward, I would personally go for the pat one!!
I would call this palette a perfect summery one, with lots of different shades and choices of finish. Generally the quality was fairly good, not overly stunning, but definitely better than the Norvina offerings.
Vivid eye look Christine, catching the last rays of sun.
If I had to choose between this and ABH x Carli Bybel, I oddly enough would pick this one. Mostly for the color story and how very complex some of these shades appear to be. This is one that could expand my creative universe. Corny, I know, but I just had to go there!
The only shade I’m really mad at us Nebula. Like, again with the PET glitter, really? I sure do wish that this trend would go poof! be gone. But it won’t until there’s several cases of severe eye injury resulting in vision loss first. Just a sad, harsh truth.
This is such a pretty palette visually and I was hoping it would review well as it is a contender for another palette that I don’t need. Overall, it is okay. I guess I will have to weigh it against the other palettes in contention. I know that Tara loves this palette and said during her haul video, that it looks like it was made just for her. I think a lot of us feel that way because of the colour story. It is very appealing. Thank you for the quick review, Christine.
Dang I ordered this today. I love the color scheme and usually get along great with Huda eyeshadows. Hopefully I like it or I’ll have to return it.
Let us know if it works for you!!
I order this on Friday as well because it had shades from other palettes that I’d like to have that those palettes use as a pop of colour only. I hope I still like it though as some of these shades are going to slightly sheer due to the nature of the pigments. Even SUPERMOON rating is expected as it’s a glitter mica top coat shade.
But DUDE what is up with Vortex being so sad! That shade should have been fine…. I’m not sure what was wrong with the formula!
I’m still not sure what up with Nebula, plastic glitter can be cut to be eye-safe like Lit Cosmetics glitters with rounded edges. (Which is why I ONLY buy from them). But this product has no description on it saying what they did to the glitter either way.
By FDA, I don’t think any plastic glitter, cut round or not, is technically eye safe, and it’s very likely they’re all using cosmetic grade glitter to begin with. I’m not sure how Lit is getting around it, actually, because they also use PET glitter.
OMG! Your eye look is so gorgeous and dreamy!!!
Sadly, the palette is only a B..skip it!
Glad I didn’t pick this one up.
I think I’d rather wait for the new Pat McGrath palette to launch, I will get a lot more use out of that one for sure, and nothing can beat Mother Pat quality.
Thank you for this beautiful look tho!
I love the looks you have created! So beautiful and unique!
Sure, it’s not the highest-scoring palette on quality ever, but I’m so in love with the color story that I just have to make this work. Ok, maybe I should see what dupes I have first, cause I do have a lot of palettes already… But I really love this a lot.
I went a swatched this in my local Sephora because I was on the fence about this pallet. I left it right there in the store. This pallet is more suited for those with medium skin tones or lighter. A good chunk of the colors went to ash on my darker skin. This just made my decision to hold out for the new Melt pallet even easier.
It is so pretty, but with all the matte pink shades and pop of blue it’s reminding me a little bit of the Natasha Denona Tropic pallette. Which I already have and need to use more.
Despite the grade, though a B isn’t terrible, I’m still really drawn to this! I love the packaging upgrade. I can dupe about…. half of this palette in my vanity and even with that I still want to jump on it with my VIB discount.
Despite Vortex being utter rubbish, I used my Sephora Rouge code to order this beauty. I can’t wait to see it in person. The color story is just too pretty, and I love the complex shimmers. Your eye looks are sublime, Christine!
This is a very pretty palette in person; however there are only two unique colors in it for me, Haze and Vortex, so I can’t justify paying 67 euros (over 70 dollars) for two eyeshadows. Also, I have the New Nude and other palettes that cover the metallic lavenders, so unless you are missing these colors, pass. If you don’t have a soft palette like this, even at a “B” unless you can find the colors by ColourPop, I’d go for it.
I have the same issue with Vortex, which is a bummer (and also validating because you had the same issue), but all the other shadows are so lovely! I wasn’t sure about it until I saw it in person and it’s perfectly cool-toned. So glad I took a chance on it. :o)
