Urban Decay Vice Lipstick
Urban Decay Vice Lipstick

Urban Decay Criminal Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “soft pink-nude [with a Comfort Matte finish].” It’s a medium pink with neutral-to-warm undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage that went mostly evenly (it could have been a little smoother on the lips) with a very creamy, lightweight texture that glided on without tugging. It lasted for four hours on me with some color gathering into my lip lines after two and a half hours of wear. The formula was neither drying nor hydrating. Bite Beauty Sorbet (DC, $26.00) is darker, brighter (95% similar). MAC Please Me (P, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Kat Von D Magick (DC, $21.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Colour Pop Solow (P, $6.50) is darker, more muted, warmer (90% similar). Jaclyn Cosmetics Isla (DC, $18.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Sephora Blossom (P, $14.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (90% similar). Colour Pop Love Bite (LE, $6.00) is less glossy (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Clint (LE, $36.00) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Pink Kiss (P, $28.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Rejected Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “pearly rose-pink [with a Metallized finish].” It’s a medium, rosy pink with subtle, cooler undertones and fine pearl. It had semi-sheer color payoff, and as a result, it had more in common with the Sheer finish than the Cream finish. The texture had moderate slip and had a thinner feel to it compared to the Creams, which are denser. It lasted for three hours on me and was lightly hydrating. Chanel Rose Clair (P, $37.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Colour Pop Juice Bar (LE, $6.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). MAC Phosphorescent (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, lighter, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Urban Decay Wrong Number Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “soft neutral pink [with a Sheer finish].” It’s a medium pink with neutral-to-warm undertones and a natural shine. It had semi-sheer color coverage that applied evenly for the most part, but some of the color seemed to gather into lip lines. The color is closer to my natural lip color, so it isn’t as obvious as it would be with a deeper shade, but it may look better/worse depending on how it contrasts with your natural lip color. The color lasted for three hours and was lightly hydrating. Urban Decay Sheer Liar (P, $18.00) is warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Rush (P, $18.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Smashbox Primrose (PiP, $21.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Nude Rose (P, $24.00) is darker, more pigmented (90% similar). Urban Decay Rush (DC, $22.00) is cooler (90% similar). Sephora Oui (03) (P, $8.00) is brighter, more pigmented (90% similar). LORAC Belle-ieve (LE, ) is darker, glossier (85% similar). Laura Mercier Raspberry Ripple (P, $25.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Urban Decay Naked (P, $18.00) is less shimmery, lighter, more pigmented (90% similar). Urban Decay Sheer Liar Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “pink-nude [with a Sheer finish].” It’s a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with warmer undertones and a natural sheen. It had semi-sheer color coverage that applied evenly with a lightweight texture and moderate slip. The texture is thin but not so thin that it clings or feels a little dry. The formula was hydrating and wore for three and a half hours on me. Urban Decay Sheer Rapture (P, $18.00) is cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay Wrong Number (P, $18.00) is cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay Naked (P, $18.00) is lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Ellie (LE, $36.00) is more shimmery (85% similar). Surratt Beauty Perfectionniste (P, $34.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Bite Beauty Rosewood (DC, $28.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Urban Decay Ravenswood Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “dusty rose with red undertone [with a Cream finish].” It’s a muted, medium-dark rosy plum with warm undertones and a creamy, lightly glossy finish. It had mostly opaque coverage with a creamy, light-medium-weight texture that applied easily, hugged the lips without feeling clingy, and was comfortable to wear. This shade wore well for four and a half hours on me, and it was hydrating while worn. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Wish (DC, $17.00) is cooler (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Impulse (Right) (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). MAC Finally Free (LE, $20.00) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | Urban Decay Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is available in six finishes, which are primarily distinguished by level of sheen, shimmer content, and coverage. Mega Mattes are the thinnest and have the most “cling” as they are drier and more matte (but most are semi-matte and not a totally flat matte) and can be drying, though they are longer-wearing. Comfort Mattes are creamier, a little denser, with richer color payoff on average (they are the most pigmented out of the finishes), and have a satin finish that is fairly comfortable to wear, usually lightly hydrating, and longer-wearing. Creams are usually softer and creamier, though not too soft (they don’t mush or break from the base easily), with some being tackier and stiffer in the tube until they warm up against the lips; they have good color payoff, are hydrating, and are comfortable to wear but have more typical wear (four to six hours–six hours for deeper/richer shades like a red). Sheers and Sheer Shimmers have a more balm-like consistency that feels a little thinner but is wetter/more emollient than Mega Mattes, so ultimately, they feel quite different applied; they have sheerer coverage, though more semi-sheer to semi-opaque than very sheer, and have the shortest wear time at two to fours with light hydration. Metallized is the most shimmery of the finishes, though some of the other finishes have shades that are actually as shimmery (to me), but the Metallized formula has a thinner, more emollient base that isn’t as dense or as cream-like as the Creams; they feel more like the Sheers but a bit heavier and more pigmented (but seem to run semi-opaque to opaque, not always fully opaque) with average wear (four to five hours), light hydration. The Revolution formula–generally–felt a little more hydrating and pigmented on the lips, but these seem to wear a little longer; some of the shades that were in Revolution and are now in Vice (particularly the Creams, Sheers, and Sheer Shimmers) feel virtually the same on to me. The Comfort Mattes are the only ones that felt largely different–more satiny than matte, less dense compared to Matte Revolution.

A note on packaging: an average Revolution lipstick weighed 1.0 oz. in total, while a Vice Lipstick weighed 0.7 oz. in total. The weight distribution for a Revolution lipstick was: 0.2 oz. for the cap alone, 0.8 oz. for the base. The weight distribution for a Vice lipstick was: 0.2 oz. for the cap alone, 0.5 oz. for the base. The decrease is felt primarily in the sturdiness/weighted feeling of the base, so I find the older Revolutions to stand better on their own, but thrown into a cup or jar for storage, it doesn’t really matter. The more weighted base does give a greater sense of heft when applying, since you hold the base. The caps are the same total weight, but the Revolution caps are shorter and, as a result, maybe 1mm thicker, while the Vice caps are longer and spread the same weight of material over a larger area. All but two out of 120 lipstick caps felt very secure, and then about four were extremely secure and difficult to uncap, but otherwise, there is a soft “click” and the caps seem to stay on without easily coming off. All that being said, they seem to be the same packaging used in the Gwen Stefani and Alice Through the Looking Glass collaborations, though the interior tube felt a little higher-end, even though they all weigh the same. Revolution Lipsticks were $22.00 for 0.09 oz., which works out to be $244.44/oz., and these are $17.00 for 0.11 oz., which works out to be $154.55/oz. So while the packaging does feel less substantial and cheaper, you are paying $5 less and getting more for your money, but if you really liked the heavier base of Revolution lipsticks, you might miss that feeling with the new packaging.

I was eyeing Ravenswood but I have 3 of the dupes already, Maybelline Touch of Spice, MAC Finally Free, and MAC Pink Truffle, so I can’t justify getting it, as beautiful as it is. Thank goodness the dupe list helps me whittle down my long wish/buylist

I was looking at Ravenswood too but I also have a couple of the dupes so I’m gonna pass too. Though part of me still wants it a little because Pink Truffle was the first lipstick I ever finished so I know I’m going to love the color. I’ll just have to pull out Touch of Spice whenever I find myself getting tempted lol

I own so many dupes for both Criminal (Bite Beauty Sorbet, Maybelline Blushing Bud, Colour Pop Solow, & Urban Decay Naked ) and Ravenswood with Maybelline Touch of Spice….. I guess these are shades most people gravitate to. 😉

Ravenswood is gorgeous and, even if the formula isn’t as great, I absolutely love the Rejected on you. I’m going to be buying these for a while, I think…

I’m in love with Ravenswood! It’s just so beautiful on, and even its dupes are just different enough to distance it. Oddly, Wrong Number looks appealing as well, even though I usually don’t do sheer lipstick because my lips are an odd shade.

Christine, how would you compare this Sheer Liar to Revolution Sheer Liar, colorwise? I have that but this seems more pink and less brown. I’m trying to figure out if it’s just my computer/the tint of your lips being different from mine. Honestly, I think I like this better but the difference might be imaginary.

I love Ravenswood but it looks like I have a dupe! There’s such a mix of happiness (don’t have to spend money!) and disappointment (no new pretties!) when that happens.

I thought the same thing about Sheer Liar, the one I have (Revolution) seems more brown. Maybe it has to do with skin tone (US 0.5, pink undertones) sof I’m interested to see the Vice version in store.

I wasn’t considering Rejected but I actually like the look. It seems like something you could pair with a smokey eye or colorful eye and it’s not going to compete but offers more than a standard nude shade.

I like them all but I think Ravenswood is the most surprising, It’s warm but I really like the look of it!

This is the color range I love most. If purchased, I would avoid anything mega matte and maybe matte as it kills my lips. I do have several Revolution floppies that are in the matte family. I love the colors but can’t tolerate the user dry feeling. Also have some of the less matte range that I love.
I do like a bit of shimmer but not required. (My three yr old great granddaughter, on the other hand, beelines for every super shimmer/glitter she can find in my collection..)

Rejected is pretty! I wasn’t going to get any pinks as I have so many but this is different enough to the others to make me want to get it!

Ravenswood is beautiful, and texture/finish wise, I don’t think I have any dupes. I tend not to wear sheer lipsticks (because I generally put my lipsticks over a little balm which sheers them a bit) but Sheer Liar is very appealing to me. It’s funny … to my eye, Sheer Liar and Ravenswood look like exactly the same color only in sheer and opaque versions, but that has to be because the color of your lips + Sheer Liar duplicates Ravenswood. On me Sheer Liar would look a litte plummier because of the almost purple-taupe tone to my lips.

Hey Christine!

I’ve had an eye on Criminal since you did your review, but I can’t find it for purchase anywhere… Do you know if this shade is available anywhere??

Thank you! 🙂
