Round-up: Makeup Geek Highlighters
Makeup Geek Highlighters
I was really impressed with the performance of the new Makeup Geek Highlighters ($20.00 for 0.25 oz.), which I found to be very consistent across the board. The shades were pigmented, long-wearing, blendable, and easy to use. I love that the shade range has lighter and deeper variations, so I think many skin tones and undertones will be able to find at least a few shades that they could wear. The only downside is that I think the price point is quite high for the brand’s positioning, and I wish they were a bit less or they offered a greater bulk (and the ability to choose) discount.

Isn’t MUG supposed to be a ‘budget friendly’ company? Since when is $20 for a highlighter a budget price? I think their pricing lately has been ridiculous, especially for a company created specifically for the purposes of being more affordable.
I mentioned the same in my initial review – it is quite high.
Wow, A’s for every color! Very impressive. I see at least 3 of these I want, but with so many highlighters already, no way can I even make a dent in one! Hope they come out with a variety of smaller pans in a value kit or even a customizable kit.
Smaller pans would be great!
My wishlist exploded with these!
1.) Ablaze
2.) Moon Phase
3.) Daybreak
4.) Celestial
In that order, literally! ?
Nice picks, Nancy!
Christine, which color is your personal favorite?
That’s tough! I think the ones I’d reach for more often would be Ablaze, Daybreak, Ignite, and Rekindle, but I find I really enjoy them overall.
As you know, Christine, I adore like 4 of these 😛
I’m going to be smart about this! I want Lit and Electrify. But do I need THREE yellow gold highlights? Nope!
But those shimmery bronzey ones I liked, I might be into those!!!
Good for you! You definitely don’t need three gold ones!
Very pretty shades and good quality too.
They are nice!
Despite the price, I snagged a couple anyway. The range of colors is really fantastic! I love to layer my highlighters and blushes for new color combos, so some of the more mid tone, warmish colors will really add some range to my collection.
Which ones did you get, Catherine?
I got Daybreak and Rekindle! First MUG purchases too so I’m excited to try them out.
Is it just me or do #’s 10 through 13 look awfully close to one another (especially the last 3)? Having just bought the Estee Edit Gritty & Glow and gone a bit overboard on highlighters in the past year or so (and I rarely wear highlighter, which makes it even crazier), all of these are an easy “pass” even though they’ve rated highly and some look quite lovely.
I think they’re a little less similar *on* but they are more similar in the pan initially!
I like the formula on these highlighters a lot! And I for one appreciate the packaging and size since the formula is so soft and almost creamy feeling my guess is it would either dry out or easily break if the pan was smaller or the packaging flimsier. I love the way this company always seem to want to create really good quality performance wise. The only problem I find with the brand as a whole is that since they can’t be found in stores, (at least not where I live), you can’t pick and choose as easily, and that tends to make you buy more than you need/want. Add most of our slightly addictive shopping behaviour to that and you soon own nine highlighters but still using only the one that suits you the best…;) So a choosable bundle system would have been nice!
Really really high end formula though! And for a really good price considering the quality, imho…
The formula is great, but the issue is more that the brand seems less and less affordable (where they started) – it’s like the Foil Eyeshadows aren’t really budget-friendly, you know? I’m glad that they are good, at least!
I wish I had the same experience with MUG as you do, Scout, though – I have had my fair share of misses from them 🙁
If these were $10 I’d have bought half of them.
I hear ya! I think even $15 would be high but not as towering as $20. I feel like at $10, you wouldn’t think much about trying one, but $20, you have to pick the right one.
I like Rekindle, Daybreak, ignite and Midnight Sun, but at this price point probalby won’t get any. Maybe if they have a special for the holidays.
I really appreciate your round-ups, they help so much.
So glad to hear they are helpful, Betty!
