Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Eyeshadow Palette
Master Mattes
Makeup by Mario Master Mattes 12-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($48.00 for 0.36 oz.) is a new, permanent all-matte eyeshadow palette that featured a mix of more red- and yellow-toned variations on beige and brown. The “issue” with this palette was that the brand actually described coverage as medium and buildable, and I’d say that it was more often semi-opaque and buildable, though a few were more medium and a couple nearly opaque.
I felt like the formula was incredibly easy to work with as it blended out seamlessly and sat particularly well on bare skin–it looked more like a cream eyeshadow. The texture was just so silky-smooth, velvety but substantial enough (without being too firm or densely-packed into the pan) to deliver true-to-pan color.

Master Mattes #1
Master Mattes #1 is a light, rosy beige with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was soft, smooth, and velvety with a touch of powderiness that was present in the pan but wasn’t an issue during application. It had medium, buildable pigmentation (just as described!) that wore well for eight hours before fading a bit.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to have "medium buildable and blendable coverage"with a "featherlight creamy feel." The formula is marked by a translucency to them that was, in fact, more medium to semi-opaque and buildable in coverage. They were soft, smooth, and velvety with glide but little powderiness, and they seemed to "melt" a bit when applied to bare skin.
I'd argue that they were a little more pigmented in one layer than true medium, but in practice, it seemed slightly more true-to-medium in coverage as the shades diffused evenly and spread to more medium coverage (even when initially seemingly semi-opaque). They lasted between seven and eight hours on me before fading visibly.

Master Mattes #2 is a muted, medium-dark yellow with strong, warm orange undertones and a matte finish. It had medium to semi-opaque, buildable color coverage paired with a soft, smooth texture that was more velvety and had noticeable slip but didn’t feel cream-like at all (true powder, just very finely-milled). It lasted nicely for eight hours before fading visibly.

Master Mattes #8
Master Mattes #8 is a light-medium caramel brown with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. The color payoff was nearly opaque, which made it a lot more than medium and buildable, though one could certainly use a lighter hand to get more gradual coverage if desired. The texture was smooth, velvety, and easy to work with as the powder seemed to “melt” on my skin and looked more like a cream eyeshadow than a powder one. It lasted well for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

Master Mattes #11
PiPPermanent in Palette.
Master Mattes #12
Master Mattes #12 is a medium-dark black with neutral undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation with a smooth, velvety consistency that was slightly firmer compared to the other shades in the palette, though it wasn’t prone to fallout or excess kicked up in the pan. It was blendable and easy to work with. The color stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly.

So nice to see a brand specifically marketing (and executing) buildable eyeshadows that emphasize blendability. i know super-opaque can be all the rage, but such shadows are often harder to work with for average consumers, and it takes longer to create a look if you have to be careful about placement and spend more effort blending. Also, anyone over 35 likely has started to get crepey eyelids, and if a shadow is too opaque (and unless you use super-expensive natural hair brushes that don’t push the loose eyelid skin around) you are likely to get skipping that is hard to blend out. While I wish this was more neutral than warm, I still might pick it up.
Because I love me some good buildable mattes in a workhorse palette, this just made the list! Not for the immediate future, though, because I still have many dupes covering most of these shades. But for when those wear out or possibly turn, there is THIS.
I need this palette like I need a hole in the head but all of these shades are so beautiful!
I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like this! I have absolutely no need for it, but I may pick it up anyway as it is always fun to experiment with a new formula (especially a nicely reviewed matte one, which is rare to find)!
I think that “medium opacity and buildable” is the “works for every skin/hair type” of foundations/shampoo. It’s like brands can’t accept their products can’t suit all preferences. I understand their goal is to sell to as many people as possible, but they could be more honest with the description of otherwise good products for a specific group of people.
Wow – what a fantastic formula for mattes this brand has! Every single one looked beautifully smooth and pigmented. Not one single dud. I think my only criticism is that all the shades have such a strong yellow/red undertone and the inclusion of more cool toned shades would have made this palette more versatile.
Those are my feelings too. The formula looks great, but the strong warm-yellow-orange direction just isn’t my thing.
Ditto! I also find that there seems to be little variation between some of the shades, particularly looking at them in the pans. Glad this performed so well but an all matte palette is not my jam and a warm one really isn’t for me.
I feel exactly the same way. Reds, oranges and yellows are no-nos for me. On my 50 year old eyes, need more of a satiny matte. Mattes are more and more looking so dang dry on my eyes. The ones that seem to work are NDs in the crease. But I still blend a satin on top.
But, for those that it will work for, it could be a workhorse. I also agree not everything is for everyone. Had I inherited more of the Latin from my family, this would be amazing. My cousin who is half Jamaican with a more neutral darker tone would also rock this. I have two Hispanic friends in Miami who could also rock this. I believe KKW is still his muse in a lot of ways.
This seems pretty well thought out and crafted. And I guess every artist needs a workhorse nude and/or matte palette. This could be a foundation palette for many, almost like the Viseart neutral matte. But unlike the latter, Mario’s seems very one note. I wanted to be a mildly disrespectful wag and say, It’s that Kardashian undertone! Then I realized it’s a personal problem with this. It’s almost impossible for me to find a foundation or concealer. They all read not-so-much too warm, as too yellow. When you read here, you learn things. And yellow undertones in Nudes and browns show up very sallow, and look sickly, dreadful on me. As far as this audience goes, Mario matte fits a niche that’s likely overduped.
Exactly! Sickly is the perfect way to describe this for some folks. It’s all about the undertones.
I also and immediately thought of my Viseart neutral matte palette when I saw this, although it might match more with the Viseart warm matte palette. Either way, I have great dupes for this color scheme, which I am kind of bummed about because the formula sounds like one I would like to try.
Glad it scored well! :o) Too warm for me but it’s a lovely palette for many people.
I love a good, well-rounded basic all matte eyeshadow palette. The reddy-browns keep this palette from being one, but maybe it’ll inspire a company to do one in the future.
