ColourPop Bare Necessities Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Bare Necessities
ColourPop Bare Necessities 30-Pan Shadow Palette ($39.00 for 0.92 oz.) is a new, mega-palette featuring a slew of neutrals from pale beige to soft black and a range of cooler and warmer-toned neutrals between those. It’s a nice palette overall for those who are still on the hunt for just the right neutral palette, and I’d say this one favors mattes over shimmers. The undertones run warmer on average, but there were several rosier and more neutral to neutral-to-cool taupes and the like. Most shades were pigmented, blendable, and wore around eight hours, though a few were a little powdery or a bit firmly-pressed into the pan.

Idol Hour
Idol Hour is a pale, white gold with moderate, warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer that was buildable to full coverage with less than a second layer. The texture was soft, slightly drier to the touch, and was best used with a lighter hand to avoid picking up too much product at once. It lasted well eight hours before showing signs of fading on me.

Formula Overview
$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce
The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours.
The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Silk Teddy is a dark peach with moderate, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The texture was soft, more loosely-pressed into the pan, so it had slight fallout during application if I wasn’t careful. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Banter
Banter is a soft, taupe-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was stiffer in the pan, so it had to be used with a heavier hand and gently pushed at the surface to dislodge product. Once the product was loosened, it had opaque pigmentation and applied evenly. I didn’t have any difficulty blending out the edges over bare skin. It stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

The Talk
The Talk is a soft, peachy coral with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It seemed to have more shimmer than base color, so it could work decently as a “topper” shade. Otherwise, I’d recommend applying it with a dampened brush or fingertip, which gave it better coverage and minimized fallout. On its own, it had more semi-opaque pigmentation that went on somewhat evenly but had to really be worked into place. It stayed on well for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably on me.

Designer Duds
Designer Duds is a peachy copper with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. The eyeshadow had good color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin. The texture was lightly emollient, dense without being too thick or too firmly pressed into the pan, so it was easy to work with. It stayed on well for eight hours before I noticed slight fading.

Spree
Spree is a medium, reddened plum with warm undertones and flecks of gold micro-sparkle over a matte base. There were enough sparkles that some translated to my lid during application, but they were prone to separating from the base product, which resulted in imprecise application. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented and had a soft, velvety texture that was easy to blend out. It lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

Act a Fool
Act a Fool is a medium-dark mauve with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color coverage in a single layer, while the texture was soft, moderately powdery, but it had good adhesion and wasn’t prone to sheering out too readily, though there was slight fallout. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably on me.

Cufflinks is a light, rosy plum with subtle, warm undertones and a soft, frosted shimmer.

Baubles
Baubles is a darker, taupe-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff that was buildable to full coverage. The texture was soft, a little drier and dustier, but it remained blendable on my skin and went on evenly. It wore well for eight hours eight hours before fading noticeably.

Spy Glass
Spyglass is a soft black with a mostly matte finish. It was densely-pressed into the pan, which resulted in a thinner, drier, and stiffer formula. It had buildable pigmentation from mostly opaque to opaque, but it was harder to blend it out. I’d recommend using a light hand and really building up as this made blending more foolproof. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading a bit.

What a great palette for someone who (unlike me) doesn’t already own a zillion neutrals! I’m glad I’m not in the least bit tempted.
Haha…same here!
I’m so annoyed that they released this AFTER I ordered Going Coconuts. If I would have known this was coming I would have waited and ordered this one. Oh well, I’m still happy with the Coconuts palette.
That’s Colourpop for ya. You turn around to sneeze and two more palettes have released when you turn back around LOL.
I’m glad to hear you like going coconuts, I’ve been eyeing that one something fierce.
Thank you forgetting this up so fast! I hope you’re planning to review the So Jaded palette—I’ve been waiting on your take to pull the trigger 🙂
I pulled the trigger and bought it during the black friday sale. And it is beautiful.
This truly is a nice mega that could be a great foundation for a stash. If CP were to do a ‘cooler’ version, as they did with Fame and Fortune, I’d be compelled to haul. As it is, I have SG dupes of all the shades I like, which is EXACTLY as it should be.
I can not look at this palette without singing “The Bear Necessities”. This palette is really large and I think I’ve got most of the bases covered with my smaller color pop palettes that are better for travel. However, I do like this palette as a whole and if it wasn’t for the fact that I don’t keep such big palettes in my collection anymore I’d snatch it up.
It’s a good thing they put Colourpop on the inside because I was positive this was a Morphe palette until I did a double take. Great for someone who doesn’t have a lot of neutrals, but I do not like they Colourpop is going into mega palettes. They were making the perfect sized palettes with their 9 and 12 pans.
I personally like smaller palettes for travel and ease of use (I really like the 9 pans, 12 are okay but when it gets to 18 I get a little overwhelm and there are usually too many similar colors). If I start my makeup collection from zero right now, these 30 pans would be great because less palette= easier organization. Big palettes with too many different colors are really overwhelming to me. However, one like this with just one theme going is like MUA dream come true.
Lovely, very cohesive neutral palette! Not that I need it, but I do absolutely love it. Which honestly surprised me. Some of these shades I have no dupes of, either. For example, Genie and Silk Teddy.
There are some really great core shades here, but I nabbed ND Biba during the sale.
I really like Spree but that’s pretty much the only one. I just love color too much.
I love your looks, Christine!
This might be a favorite palette released this year! No glitters or pigments. Really just the bare necessities: neutrals of all depths with some pops of color. I think this is great for newbies ready to start an eyeshadow collection and begin playing around and discovering their preferences. Or even for people who just want a one-and-done palette for all occasions. The color selection and price tag are not intimidating.
And CP doing a mega palette is great bc their pressed shadows are easy to pop out which makes the problem of owning a mega palette with traveling, storing or depotting less of an issue.
What a mammoth palette to test Christine! You have done a sterling job, as usual.
I think this palette is way too big and half the shades could have been cut out because they are so similar to each other. Secondly, I would have preferred this one to be divided into two – the mattes and the shimmers, as I only like the shimmer shades and would not use the mattes at all.
As to the shimmer shades, quite a few had issues re fallout and needed a damp brush to use them successfully. There were lots of dupes for them too.
What I did like was that the brand refrained from adding in orange and red shades.
I’m not usually grabbed by specific neutral shades, but Act a Fool has really caught my eye for some reason! Too bad it seems like all the dupes are either also part of a palette, LE releases, or rated really badly… 🙁
