Lipsticks Under $15 | 2019 Editor's Favorites

How many lipsticks did you wear this year? I might have donned some 750+ lipsticks (across all types, pencil, liquid, traditional) over the last year! Lipstick is the most competitive category; it’s the one that I feel like I’ll never, ever cover well because there are so many formulas that exist–new and long existing–with tons of shades.

This year, I reviewed more of Revlon’s long-standing Super Lustrous range (and plenty more to come in 2020, I imagine).  There was also new shades in the Sephora #Lipstories range along with the release of their Rouge Lacquer, which is a nice option for anyone who loves super glossy, opaque color.  One of my favorite new formulas was definitely ColourPop’s Just a Tint pencils!

If you’re unfamiliar with how I like to do my year-end favorites, here’s the low down: I pull from the products I reviewed in 2019, regardless of whether they were new, limited edition, or an established range I’ve only just gotten around to reviewing. These are personal favorites, so they may or may not be the highest rated products reviewed during the year (though they will tend to be better rated, naturally!). (You can check out best of 2018 if you missed it.)

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

What were your more used budget-friendly lipsticks this year? The Sephora Rouge Lacquer lipsticks are probably my favourite “under $15/budget” lipsticks. I have 2 of them and really like them; they’re like the YSL “oil-in-stick” lipsticks at a fraction of the price.
What type of lipstick finish did you reach for most this year? I always reach for creamy finishes – MAC’s Amplified Cream is a good example of the texture I like – pigmented and reasonably long wearing but hydrating and creamy rather than matte, dry and desiccating.
Do you expect to purchase more or less lipstick in 2020? Probably about the same, and mostly repurchasing my holy grail lipsticks.

What were your more used budget-friendly lipsticks this year? Definitely ColourPop!

What type of lipstick finish did you reach for most this year? Satins, creams and luminous finishes.

Do you expect to purchase more or less lipstick in 2020? Way less. I’m drowning in lipsticks and don’t want them to go rancid before I get a lot more usage out of what I already have.

What were your more used budget-friendly lipsticks this year? As I survey my collection, I am realizing that I didn’t use very many budget-friendly lipsticks this past year. When I had colds, I used NYX Butter Glosses so I wouldn’t get germs on my better lipsticks. That’s about it, I think.

What type of lipstick finish did you reach for most this year? Creams and satins

Do you expect to purchase more or less lipstick in 2020? Less. A lot less.

Sephora’s lipstories in Hong Kong by Night and Festival Lights.

What type of lipstick finish did you reach for most this year?
Always the same – creamy, satiny lipsticks that hydrate the lips.

Do you expect to purchase more or less lipstick in 2020?
I will most likely purchase pretty much the same amount of lipsticks this year as I have done in the past. As the lipsticks I purchase are not expensive, I can easily indulge in my favourites without breaking the bank. And many of them are just as good as the high end versions too.
