Game of Thrones

Urban Decay Game of Thrones Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.68 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette that launches April 14th on Urban Decay’s website and heads to retailers on April 29th. It contains 20 eyeshadows housed in a thicker cardboard sleeve, and the portion that contains the eyeshadows pulls out fully from the sleeve. The palette looks like a book, and the “cover” reveals a mirror and a pop-up of the Iron Throne. If you found old school Urban Decay palettes bulky, then I don’t imagine you’d feel differently about this one.

There’s plenty of physical product in each pan, and the color story seemed cohesive to me. I didn’t struggle to pull together some looks, though some may find it doesn’t have enough mattes or wish there were more colorful mattes included. Four of the shades are very sparkly–definitely more “top coat” type shades, I’d guess, than typical shimmery eyeshadow, which may or may not be your cup of tea. If you don’t mind sparkly eyeshadows and tend to apply yours with fingertips and/or adhesive sprays or bases, then you should have a better experience with them than I did (as I don’t test with those helpers!).

Take the Black

Take the Black is a deep black with flecks of silver micro-glitter and multi-colored pearl. The eyeshadow had opaque color payoff in a single layer, which adhered well to bare skin, though it wasn’t as blendable as it could have been when used as a more standalone shade. If I used a lighter hand and applied it to darken other shades, I didn’t have any trouble blending it out. The texture was denser, almost cream-like, but not too thick so it picked up well with a brush. It lasted well for eight hours on me before I noticed any fading.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.05 oz. - $380.00 Per Ounce

The formula is typically described as "high-pigment" that "stays on your lids" and goes on "seamlessly." Their permanent range has a lot of fantastic shades in it, and many of them are pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. Some of their matte are real workhorse kind of shades with soft, smooth, silky, and blendable textures, while their shimmers and pearly shades are very rich in payoff and apply beautifully to the lid. They wear between seven and nine hours on me, depending on the shade and finish.

White Walker

White Walker is a pale, iridescent icy blue with cool undertones and a frosted sheen. It had medium color coverage that built up to semi-opaque pigmentation at best. The problem I had with this shade was that it had a strong, white base that was powdery, dry, and prone to fallout, though it ended up leaving the best bits behind–that iridescent shimmer. The color wore well for eight hours on me before it started to wear away.

Frozen North

Frozen North is a rich, medium-dark blue-teal with cool undertones and a bright, metallic finish. The pigmentation was rich–a little went a long way–and it was by far the most pigmented, most intense, and smoothest shade in the palette. The texture was dense but not thick, firm but not stiff, and it adhered well to bare skin and lasted well for eight and a half hours.

Free Folk

Free Folk is a soft silver with cool undertones and a frosted finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff that was buildable (or use a wet brush for maximum coverage in one layer) that applied fairly evenly but could have blended out more easily. The texture was soft without being dry or powdery but lacked some of the slip and richness of the other shimmers in the palette. It stayed on nicely for seven and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Hardhome

Hardhome is a pale, almost white, pink with subtle, warm undertones and peach-to-pink sparkle. It had semi-sheer color payoff with a chunky texture that was hard to apply evenly. It was the type of shade that had enough sparkle and shine to camouflage a lot of its deficits, but it was prone to fallout both during application and during the seven and a half hours it lasted for.

Nymeria

Nymeria is a soft brown with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had rich pigmentation paired with a soft, blendable consistency that felt velvety with a touch of powderiness in the pan (but not enough to cause fallout issues during application). Weirwood Leaves is a medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a pearl finish. The color payoff was opaque in a single layer, and the color went on evenly and smoothly without sheering out too readily. The Sight

The Sight is a medium-dark, forest green with subtle, warm undertones and flecks of micro-sparkle over a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation, though it needed a second layer or to be applied with a dampened brush to achieve more true-to-pan depth and opacity. The texture was slightly dry to the touch, though it applied evenly and blended out without much work. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Winterfell

Winterfell is a deep gold with warm undertones and a glittery finish. It had medium pigmentation with a chunkier, noticeably glittery texture, though there was some slip and felt emollient, which helped minimize the fallout. The sparkles seemed more fleck-like–flatter and less prone to dropping right off the lid. I would recommend using this with a dampened brush or an adhesive spray to maximize coverage, shine, and wear. On its own, it stayed on well for seven and a half hours but had some fallout while worn.

House Lannister is a medium peach with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. King's Landing

King’s Landing is a bright, white gold with strong, yellow undertones and a sparkly finish. The color payoff was opaque in one layer, while the texture felt emollient to the touch, which helped the larger sparkles bind with the rest of the powder and minimized fallout. It was denser, a little thick, but it didn’t emphasize my skin’s natural texture. It wore well for eight hours on me before it started to wear away with a touch of fallout over time.

I love Urban Decay and these swatches look very pretty but I’m going to have to pass: I hate the excessive, bulky packaging (I do not watch GoT so I’m not a fan and have no point of reference). I like several of the colors (that blue!) but I know I would never reach for this, and storing it would be problematic. I decluttered all of my Vice palettes because of the bulk and this looks far bulkier.

disco cat Avatar

wierwood, the sight, and stormborn are really pretty but i’m not getting it for three shades. love the looks you created christine!

Nancy T Avatar

The quality is definitely good enough for me, as I do use e/s primer and do apply some of my e/s’s with a brush dampened with some MAC Fix+. So, that’s not a problem for me personally.
Also, I do believe UD did a fairly decent job of curating the shades with several glaring exceptions (Nymeria as a warm brown instead of something cooler toned. House Targaryen could have been something more closely related to their family hair color described as “silver”, which I take as platinum blonde or it could have been a red like Gash.) Many are disappointed in the color scheme, however, imagine if they actually had gone 100% with it. It may have had too much gray, gunmetal, black, white and other less colorful shades for it to make for interesting looks such as you did using it. I’m okay with it being more colorful than anticipated for that reason alone. Lone exceptions being Nymeria and House Targaryen, both have me scratching my head in confusion.
As for the cardboard Throne? I think my cats would destroy that within a day if I left that up unattended, lol! ?
But, I am getting it, though!

Caroline Avatar

I’d have thought UD would have divided the palette into four separate compartments rather than lump it all together (I like the shades in the White Walker section). That way, there’d be less bulk (and I HATE bulky packaging, it drives me nuts!), so for me this is an easy pass. Some of the shades seem a bit meh anyway, so I wouldn’t buy this just for the few shades I do like.
I’d have preferred the option of being able to buy the shadows singly as well, just like the lipsticks and eyeliners, but I guess you can’t have everything.

tennyoceres Avatar

A shade called Lannister Red that reads brown. There’s a head scratcher. With a name like Lannister Red I was hoping for some full on burgundy/blood red with wild yellow-gold shimmer. Lannisters are many things, but subtle fashion sense is not one of them. No, UD with all of their creativity gave us warmed toned brown instead.

If I was willing to spend the money…maybe…the colors are pretty.. I also have a lot of palettes that I can use….Really bulky too. I am watching someone review the eye palette and the looks that can be done are pretty..but I’m horrible at doing eye make up…I guess more experimentation and hope I get better…If I can get an eyeliner I would be happy they look pretty and their liners are good..

I do have a lot of dupes for some of the shades I really like and, as I feared, Winterfell didn’t score well at all (though from the first swatches you posted, I thought it would get a D or F, so better than I thought it would score). It also contains a few shades I don’t like and would never wear but in spite of all of this, I think I really want this palette! Somebody shake some sense into me!!!

Your look is stunning, Christine. And there are a few nice shades. But the palette looks bulky and chaotic. I like simpler packaging overall and don’t care for an excessive use of paper or petroleum plastics, just to make a graphic statement– the statement is in the look.

Hmm – this is really a mixed bag. I think the packaging is dramatic and certainly in keeping with the theme, but bulky packaging these days is a tad out of touch with reality – I mean, how do you store it?
The shades themselves are pretty and some of them are fairly common ones too. There are a few duds here as well as stellar numbers. Overall it is reminiscent of their Book of Shadows palettes from years ago. As for me, my large palette buying days are over and I have dupes for the shades I love. Frozen North is a standout blue, which is beautiful.
Gorgeous eye looks Christine.

BOS 4! Holy wazoo. That was how I first started box cutting bulky/foolish palettes and on the long learning curve for depotting. Never having seen GOT, it would be silly to get a fangirl palette, even if it rated well and appealed for color story. But, that packaging has my fingers itching for the box cutter. It’s a display piece for collectors, and seems to work as that.

I think I’m definitely getting the vault, but I’m still annoyed that Weirwood Leaves is not the green colour, and that Lannister red is not a deep blood red. I actually think all the Lannister colours should be rich. Not neutral at all. I kinda love how extra that packaging is. Love that they they incorporated the iron throne.

I was going to say the same thing — weirwood leaves are blood red in the story. They had a few conflicting color name choices in this; one could argue that Weirwood Leaves, Lannister Red, and House Lannister should all be red, but clearly they can’t do that in one palette. I’m thinking that with all the possible people, subjects, and locations in GOT, they didn’t have to pick color names that disagreed with the color and conflicted with each other — seems a bit lazy IMO.

I like this more than I thought initially. Love both of the eye looks you did! I’m a big Games of Thrones fan. But I’m over run with eye shadows so I’ll probably get either the highlighter palette or a couple of the lip sticks from this collection.

A couple duds, but honestly, it did better than I thought it would; I guess I had the bar set pretty low. Lannister Red is actually a wonderful color , so much so that I think I already have a 3 or 4 shadows that are similar.

As an aside, I didn’t look closely at the names before, so didn’t realize one was called “Nymeria”; they better bring her back in a big way in the last season! Ghost too!

Thanks for the detailed review Christine! I’m still not 100% sold on the colour story although it obvs. is good qualitywise with the usual ups and downs and you created really beautiful looks with the colours. Plus the bulky packaging ist definetly a no for me. Although the idea with the book is nice and consistent as it is a tv series based on a book series, I wonder why UD didn’t think of making 4 smaller compartments with 4 shadows/1 topper. It also seems to be curated not as an all-over fan service but more to promote the new season (that in my mind doesn’t really need promotion at all, but whatever).
I am a GoT fan, but not a fan of huge packaging, so I will pass on that one.

I actually like the shades but ugh, that packaging! They don’t even give you an option of a cardboard lid so you can remove the palette and store it separately. No way am I going to be able to store that giant box in my set up, so it’s a pass now. I guess i’ll pick up a lipstick or eyeliner instead.

50% off on Debenhams by this time next year.

I saw this palette last weekend in Selfridges (I’m in the UK) and swatched a couple of colours that I was really wowed by. Anyway, I’m trying not to buy new make up at the moment and thought I’d wait to see if it gets reduced in future. Selfridges only had the pull out drawer on display however and had I seen the tacky (what looks like cardboard) throne I would have been put off straight away. I wouldn’t be able to store this so am not looking at it any further.
