Too Faced Grand Hotel Café Palettes Review, Photos, Swatches
Too Faced Grand Hotel Café Palettes
Too Faced Grand Hotel Café Palettes ($49.00 for 1.46 oz.) includes 18 eyeshadows, two blushes, one bronzer, and a deluxe sized mascara. While I don’t always have great luck with Too Faced’s eyeshadow formula (I have found it to be thinner and dustier, so it tends to require primer to perform well), I found this set of palettes to be particularly disheartening. I feel like this set is why people have dismissed holiday palettes more this year compared to previous years; it is everything wrong with holiday: an intense focus on packaging and presentation and seemingly little to no focus on actual product quality and consistency. There were many shades that were very sheer, dusty, or dry, and only a handful of shades were decent. Even two of the three cheek colors had a clumpy, powdery consistency that was just really surprising–in the worst of ways–and sealed the deal on this being a total disappointment.

Why does Too Faced even bother anymore if they’re just going to launch the same crappy holiday collections?!
I think they have so many, because they do retailer exclusives, so they put out different kits for Ulta vs. Sephora, which makes it seem like overkill.
This embodies what is off about so many holiday releases. Despite that, you managed, as always, to create a beautiful look. You might wish to check your look description for eyes. This is so sad, that I’m not even going to read the individual descriptions, which is a daily pleasure.
It started to get painful to write after a point, since it was feeling like, “See previous review.”
well said.
you have the best job ever!!! i really appreciate all your reviews and swatches, and always look forward to product launches on your page!
Thanks, Susan!
Yikes. Central Perk is beautiful though.
One winner!
Whew, that’s a lot to take in. The packaging is VERY cute! But some of the swatches sure look disappointing.
It’s a big set!
Oh gosh, these palettes really are disappointing! Even in the pan, you can tell that some of these shadows are super dry.
They were a bummer!
Hi Christine,
I think you need to change the info under Makeup Look to Too Faced instead of Bare Minerals. 🙂
I totally agree with you about the holiday palettes!!!! I don’t care how cute it looks if the products are subpar! I haven’t purchased any holiday products from Too Faced or Tarte because the reviews have been so bad. I wish they would wow us with quality instead of packaging. I keep thinking about the Beckham eyeshadow palette. It’s pricey (and I want it), but the quality was spot on. Ever since that release, I’ve really started to judge what a purchase in a different light. I’m not falling for the pretty packaging. I’m putting my money into products that are going to perform. end of rant. 🙂
Hi Robin,
I’m not sure why the Makeup Look is showing bareMinerals, so I’ll have to fix that, but it is for the full face photos, where I’m not wearing Too Faced except to demonstrate the blushes in the set 🙂
okay now it says this? I’m on a desktop. Maybe I have computer gremlins.
ON EYES:
Giorgio Armani #9 Eye Tint
Giorgio Armani #10 Eye Tint
Urban Decay Chem Trail Liquid Moondust Eyeshadow
Sephora Good Mood Contour Eye Pencil
Hi Robin!
I mentioned it shouldn’t be bareMinerals and would fix that – which I did! 🙂 That is what I’m wearing on the eyes for two of the full face shots (I did the bronzer on a separate day).
oh gosh 🙁
🙁
What always turns me off from these (aside from lack of quality) is that they are SO holiday-themed. They are cute and great gift ideas but I feel like I’m going to be turned off from using colors named egg nog and candy cane later in the spring. If the christmas sets are going to be themed every year, why don’t they do a theme we can relate to until summer at least?
I could see that – they are very obviously holiday, not just the names but packaging, too.
This would be a great value at that price if it performed well. It seems exactly like you said, they put the effort into the packaging and in order to sell it cheap(ish) they cut corners on quality control. I wonder why some brands use this strategy… Pump out a bunch of glittery looking things but the quality isn’t really there. Maybe it makes a bigger impact on the sales floor? I figure that’s why MAC does it–so when you go to their store/counter it just *looks* like something special is going on.
Maybe even half the effort they do for packaging into the product would be nice to see now 🙁
OMG, I’m so disappointed, I wanted to get it so bad 🙁
Aww!
Yep, one of several reasons *why* when asked the other night on here about which brands I’ve lost interest in, Too Faced was one of main 2. Between the stupid food fragrance in eyeshadow and their damning stream of subpar holiday palettes, they are just not what I used to hear about them. This one is particularly BAD. ?
I don’t know why they have to make all their palettes scented now, lol!
Shame on me. I didn’t wait for your review. I wanted to like this set so much that I bought it right away. 🙁 Listen to Christine, everybody; she’s absolutely right. Almost all the colors are crappy. I will say I’ve had better luck with the blushes than she did but don’t know why. Most of the eye shadows are horrible.
I could overlook some of the failings if it all smelled as advertised but it DOESN’T. I don’t smell peppermint, eggnog, gingerbread, or any kind of coffee. Each palette has a stinky burned plastic smell to me. GROSS.
This isn’t a general Too Faced hate, as I liked their Sweet Peach palette very much earlier in the year, and the PB&J one. But I think I’m done with holiday palettes for a loooooong time.
I’m so sad to hear you had a similar experience, Susan! 🙁 I got more of the individual scents than you and definitely not plastic smell, lol, I cannot imagine plastic smell ON the eyes!
Fortunately (I guess!) the smell is only the palette itself. Once I use any of it, I don’t smell it on myself.
This is just flat out distressing. I think it’s things like this that put me off a brand in general and avoid their other products. I see a lot of comments and flak for high-end and luxury products, but I’m still happier paying for better quality and (theoretically!) having fewer products than laying out money for junk like this. I could almost forgive the cutesy packaging if the product was good, but no. Your eye looks are pretty, but I can’t imagine how long it must have taken to get it to a decent point.
I kept adding and adding – that’s how I know, in particular, that something is just not working (I have to start over anyway, because one can’t test THAT many shades at once (and know how they’re fading/wearing).
the same usual kind of unoriginal, poor pigmentation shades packaged in cheap cardboard but just holiday themed?
I own a couple of their blushes and eyeshadow palettes which I think are all pretty decent
but this holiday collection seems a bit insulting.
This set of palettes is pretty pad!
WHOA. It’s like marked up drugstore shadow. Was not expecting such bad marks. Thanks for this!
No prob!
Those were mostly painful to witness!
I know 🙁
This is a sad mess! I feel like someone would be much better off buying a decent-quality drugstore or ULTA megapalette, especially as a gift for the teens this seems aimed at. And Too Faced can do better than this — or at least they used to be able to!
I think brands make a big mistake when they skimp on their holiday sets, because a lot of people try them as an introduction to the brand. It seems like they’d want to put on their best efforts, but you see this mistake sadly too often.
Ironically, the one shade I really like in the whole palette (Central Perk) is the lone good performer! No way I’d get the whole set for one shade, though!
I haven’t used my Too Faced palettes in a couple of years… time to let them move on, I think. Hate to just toss them, but… if I’m not using them — and I won’t, anymore…
Central Perk made NO sense in this palette, because it was so good compared to the rest!
Oh dear, this is just sad. Luckily I learned my lesson last year. I can buy a cardboard house at Michaels for under $5.00 and paint it myself.
Phew! 😉
I was SOOOO disappointed when I swatched this at Ulta. I was so excited when I saw them, because they have really pretty colors! And, obviously, the smell is amazing! But, oh. my. God. The quality of these is horrible! Patchy, dry, a lot of fallout. Not good at all.
I’m glad I’m not alone!!
Ouch, such poor performance! People pay out good money for treats for holidays, it’s an insult to produce subpar products. Ok if it was super cheap then it wouldn’t matter too much but it’s not. It’s beyond a joke ?.
And sadly… if you give these as gifts, they LOOK great at a glance – but then someone has to use them 🙁
What a shame–I was looking forward to these palettes, but they’re off my wishlist now. Thanks for the honest review!
My pleasure, Jammies!
Man… let’s hope a lot of these brands really rethink holiday for next year. Nothing is really exciting and the one thing I really wanted turned out to be crap anyway.
I don’t know why Too Faced doesn’t scale down their offerings – instead of 3 of these palettes, how about one really good one?
I think we are all due for a super knockout Too Faced palette really soon. Simple packaging with amazing colors and quality. I hope they’re listening to you! (And all of us haha)
Right?!
Oh my – this is terrible – Too Faced can’t even get the basic shades right. What a waste of money and the packaging is a huge gimmick to disguise the low quality of the eyeshadows and blushes.
Once again Christine – a beautiful eye look.
More like Grand Hotel Crappe. Hard pass. Too Faced should be ashamed of itself.
I bought these. I like the smell, but yeah, they were disappointing. I will say that I did one of the suggested looks (the one with the light pink halo), and my kids went nuts for it, saying it looked really good. Winter Dream and Cold Brew has a bit of an odd texture but are sooo pretty. I found that if I pat a little on with my finger after applying with a brush that Winter Dream looked amazing. I tried it wet and that was an epic fail.
Yep, I swatched these in store and was depressed. Every set seem to have 1 or 2 decent shades, but the rest were meh or downright horrible. It’s too bad because I do love the cute holiday packaging, the color combos, and the grab-and-go aspects of the kits, but if they would only put in better shadows……
I picked this one up last month and had to return it. No pigmentation at all.
This is really sad… The packaging is a bit over the top, but I really liked the idea of having several smaller palettes with a short selection of shades that work well together for a particular look – seems perfect for a weekend or short getaway. Or it would be, if what they contained was actual eyeshadow, and not colorful sand… I don’t know what the heck Too Faced thinks they’re doing these days, but I’m losing trust in the brand. Still loving their Melted lipsticks and blushes but that’s about it!
Hi Christine, Considering The Nudes Eyeshadow Palette by Maybelline is the worst palette I’ve owned (formula-wise), how does this compare to the Maybelline palette?
On a side note, I’m losing faith in Too Faced as a brand. I wanted to pick up the Chocolate Bar palette, but now I’m not too sure.
Thanks!
Sorry, I haven’t tried that!
I didn’t hate this set to be honest. I did think it was cute and yeah, some of the colours lacked pigmentation, but I’m happy with it overall. What I’m flabberghasted at is how you got that kind of pigmentation in the swatch out of Cold Brew! I felt like mine was all glitter and no base colour!!
Such a shame!! Especially with there being a few gorgeous shades in there… the failures REALLY FAIL though!!! Ugh! Steering clear. =/
Thank you for your honest review, as always. The colors look so pretty, but I think this was the same result w/ the too faced holiday collections in the past, so I didn’t try to get it. I did get the macaroons palate from Ulta since I had a gift card, but I haven’t tried it yet. I love the other too faced palates, so I guess I’ll just continue to stick with the regulars. (PB&J is my absolute fav!)
Not only is it bad, I mean, those grades! It looks like the last years holiday LE’s. Or maybe I’m just imagine that.
I don’t envy you, writing about bad performing makeup like this, but I am very grateful that you do. So much saved thanks to you.
I don’t have either eyeshadows so I could be speaking rubbish, but from your swatches Makeup Geek Epic Foiled Eyeshadow looks pretty similar to Central Perk! I fell in love with that colour but it’s so silly buying a palette of bad eyeshadows for just that one green!
