Sephora + Pantone Universe Modern Watercolors Eyeshadow Palette

Sephora + Pantone Universe Modern Watercolors Eyeshadow Palette ($39.00 for 0.72 oz.) includes 24 eyeshadows in various pastel hues. It’s a new, limited edition palette created for the Color of the Year collection (which features two colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity). While it’s interesting, and there are plenty of shades that we don’t see all that often in it, the performance leaves a lot to be desired. The shimmers tended to be the better performers, while the lighter mattes were the more disappointing shades. In general, the formula is dusty, dry, or powdery (and sometimes chalky, due to some shades having a stronger white base), which in turn results in the eyeshadow sheering out or applying unevenly. The wear was five to six hours with the majority of shades. I’ve had better luck with past iterations of this collaboration, but this was a miss for me. Sephora said that it was supposed to include the Sephora Collection’s “high performance formulas” that had “rich color payoff” and a “luxurious feel,” plus “long-wear,” but nothing about these reminds me of their single eyeshadow range at all.

BOTTOM LINE: There are a lot of fun shades in the palette, but it’s really only functional over a creamy, white base (like NYX Milk) in order to get the eyeshadows to pop, apply evenly, and blend nicely. I find regular primer is typically too thin and doesn’t do enough for the intensity unless it is a thicker, more cream-like primer, but something very light or white is still the best way to go.

Bright White is a bright white with a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a soft, fairly smooth texture that applied decently. It lasted for six and a half hours on me. Rose Quartz is a pale pink with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation but was a little powdery, so it tended to apply unevenly on the lid. I think a regular primer would improve the application (a white base won’t bring out the color that much, since it is already quite light). It wore well for six hours. Ash is a light-medium, purpled gray with cool undertones and a matte finish. Orchid Haze is a light-medium lavender with warmer, pink undertones and a matte finish. It had weak pigmentation with a dusty, thin texture that didn’t apply well and tended to sheer out. Cascade is a richer, medium aqua with cool undertones and a matte finish. Linden Green is a bright, green-tinged yellow with warm undertones and a matte finish. It was very powdery and chalk-like, and the resulting applicaftion was uneven and dry-looking. Reviews seem pretty mixed – some enjoy it, some find it a lot of work. Maybe you will be in the love it camp! Use a good base. I think if you dig pastel shades and the general color composition and don’t have lots of dupes, then just make sure to use a solid base and/or white base to help make those pastels pop and apply well.

Jenny Cupcakes Avatar

That’s disappointing, since I actually really like this palette. But it’s true that you need a primer or white base to get the shadows to pop. This is not a problem for me since I never wear eyeshadow without a base anyway. I recently did a look using the three green pastel shades and I got compliments on it all day. So it’s a definitely a good palette if you’re like me and use bases on every eye look you do.

MissJae1908 Avatar

When I saw this palette, I immediately thought chalk…my suspicions were correct. I watched a review of someone that’s an NW45. When she swatched and blended most of the shades out, they disappeared. This looks just as bad as the Jem Holograms palette.

The Silver Nail Avatar

Ugh, no thanks! What a disappointment.

On the bright side, I can just look at a picture of the palette and pretend it’s 1972 again. 😉

Mariella Avatar

I didn’t like the look of this at all when you first posted a picture of it a few weeks ago. My feelings are pretty much confirmed. Not only do I find it very unattractive but the quality is also disappointing. I’m not too sad, though, since, like I said, I found this to be a very unattractive palette. I think there is one shade in it that I would wear and the rest….pppffft!

A Avatar

I love the colour selection for this! Not really for eyeshadow though – at least not on my skintone, but they’re very pretty colours. Not surprised they didn’t turn out so well though – matte pastels tend to go awry easily.

KJH Avatar

Glad I waited and thanks for saving me the $40. You can put together a MUFE trio for what, $44? that anyone would love. And there’s a 10% deal now? No brainier. There are some MUG and Inglot dupes that at least don’t suck out loud. The majority of the ‘better’ ones have lots of good dupes. The more unusual shades have almost no dupes….and they were the shades that drew you in. This is a big disappointment for me. I think I would rather try and reconstruct this one than make the effort needed to get any payoff. Will dig out some of my 40 y.o. Pastels. Remember the preservative level was so high then, that those will never die! Thanks for reminding me about Black Milk and to check out the TT beauty on her website (Secret Pond: think that’s in a nice palette that I think still exists.). Makes me glad I have an eye rash, esp on my right lid, and can’t do shadow right now. Divine retribution for lusting after this one. If not for the rash, I know I would have caved by now. Jessica et al: let us know what works to improve this $^cker.

KJH Avatar

BTW, the Tarantino beauty site is all on sale, with very few products left. Was unable to discern whether or not she’s leaving the cosmetics end of her business. Secret Pond..that palette n/a. Only a few liners. Looking like going, going, gone. You might want to wait and see, bec it would be quicker to label all TT d/c than to try to figure out what’s gone and not. Never was attracted in the store, prob too much jewel-y packaging, but your reviews were often so good, esp. on liners. Neapolitan Lane is sold out…always ghosting around the periphery of my wish list. The eye thing is likely psoriasis, but it didn’t go away in the summer sun (I live at a NE beach) and whoever heard of psoriasis that hurts? Gotta see the MD…haven’t been in 5 years. Long, ugly story. Just thought you might want to know about TT.

Christine Avatar

I think she tried to make it happen on her own, but my guess is that there weren’t enough direct sales (through her website) to keep it going. I remember at some point (after the brand left Sephora) that there were some products via Beauty.com, but the selection their is definitely very limited.

But here’s hoping I’m wrong and that they’re revamping/bringing back the line in a big splash range!

Hope the MD can help you out, KJH! That sounds more than unpleasant!

Katherine T. Avatar

Well, I know an NYX Milk Pencil can work miracles. I have a Hello Kitty pastel shadow kit that swatches worse than the pastels here (bought on sale for cute packaging), and the NYX Milk makes them usable, not great, but wearable. It’s too bad, as I love some of the more unique colors in this kit, but knew Sephora wouldn’t be able to pull it off. Until someone invents a pastel formula that’s decent, I will skip, as I don’t wear pastels that often, and think I can round up enough odds-and-ends pastels in my current stash to get the look. And I have Vice Reloaded coming in the mail, which has some pastels in there already and some colors that can be sheered down into pastels/soft washes

Ashleigh Avatar

I have been playing around with mine for about a week now, and totally agree that the best way to make it work is to apply NYX’s jumbo eye pencil in milk before using the pastels. I had hoped they would be a little easier to work with and have a smoother feel, but seeing as I already have the NYX pencil in my collection I might as well use it and get use out of the pretty colors. I do really love the variety of colors and finishes, so overall I’m still going to make it work, in the words of Tim Gunn 🙂

Nancy T Avatar

Fairly easy pass considering that I’m not exactly a pastel loving person. They usually, with rare exception, look hideous on me. But I was interested in those vivid summer brights, shame that those don’t blend out well. It’s sad how horribly they messed up this palette, because there are those who love these type of shades or were perhaps just glad to finally have something different than another neutral palette.

Laura Avatar

Ha ha yeah, I’m a crazy person. But its just such an obvious detail to miss that honestly might be indicative of the quality issues. But for reals that’s clearly an image of acrylic or oil paints on canvas lol.

Reka Avatar

It’s been bugging the heck out of me too! Someone had ONE job, find a nice modern water color for the cover and they managed to pick an oil painting (it looks like a super close up of an imitation Diebenkorn or something)!

Genevieve Avatar

I think water colour pastels must be hard for brands to do (remember that awful Laura Mercer Water Pastels palette from last year?) and this one is no exception. Unless you are an absolute fan of pastels, this palette is a waste of money. Usual Sephora does a good job, but not this time.

Linda Avatar

Aw, bummer. I love quite a few of the colors in this palette and was really hoping it would swatch well. Christine, just curious, did you experiment with a wet brush at all? I’m wondering if the magic might be in actually using them as watercolors (see how I’m still trying to make this thing work?). 🙂

Phoebe Avatar

I have this and I have to admit the quality could be a lot better, but i have found that with a primer (I use MAC’s prep and prime eye base) and some effort you can get most of the colours looking much better. I swatched them all on my arm when i got it and was disappointed but after trying out a few eye looks i was fairly happy, there’s colours in the palette that I wouldn’t necessarily buy but would like to use once in a while so for me it was worth it in the end! I am super pale too so most of these colours show up well on my skin!

Claire L Avatar

It is a pretty palette, with some unusual colours. Such a shame it’s not better performing for the price, if I got it I have to buy at least $75 worth of goods and then shipping and tax on top to have it delivered it to the UK. I always use a primer anyway because of my oily eyelids, I’m in two minds whether to get this or not. There’s nothing else like this out there, unless you have any suggestions, Christine, haha!

EvilStepQueen Avatar

When we got this in at my work, I immediately had to swatch every single color. About the third one in, I was so disappointed. So chalky and all of the colors that “spoke” to me, were the worst performers!! And then the glosses were a milky mess! We didn’t get the lipsticks (yet?). My particular store is afraid of “non traditional” lip colors. So, I make sure to rock my blues and greens (thank goodness for Kat Von D) everyday I work!!

Bonnie Avatar

The colors are so unique and beautiful, but I waited patiently for your reviews and I’m SO GLAD that I did, because this entire collection was a huge fail. Hey, money saved (or more like, put immediately towards the next lust-worthy item!)

Katherine Avatar

I’m surprised at such a negative review. I thought this would at least get a B/B-. I really like this palette and have used almost every matte color without a white base, just primer, but then I am pretty pale (Lightest shade of the reformulated MUFE HD foundation/ N0 in Cover fx foundation. I know everyone always makes comparisons to MAC foundation shades, but I’ve never tried any and based on online comparisons I’m pretty sure they don’t make a shade light enough.). The only colors that really didn’t show up on me were the light yellow and rose quartz. Rose Quartz may be too close to my skin tone to show up much. All of the others could be built up to look pretty vibrant. They are a bit more work, but I like being able to control the intensity. I thought a lot of the mattes were powdery in the same was Lorac pro mattes are, but they still blended easily for me. They definitely aren’t the same quality, but I thought this was a nice palette for trying out new colors. I bought the palette for the matte colors, but the shimmers are really interesting and pretty, since they shimmer/ flash at different angles.

If you prefer your products sheerer or medium in opacity, then this would certainly not be as bad of a buy as it would be if you were expecting it to deliver on what it promised (“rich color payoff”), which is how I review products 🙂 Glad you like yours, Katherine!
