NARS L’Amour, Toujours L’Amour Eyeshadow Palette

NARS L’Amour, Toujours L’Amour Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.84 oz.) is a new, limited edition eyeshadow palette that features twelve eyeshadows; four are over-sized and eight are more normally sized. What’s interesting to me is that I can’t find a single call out from the bran that the formula is any different than their typical powder eyeshadow, and I think that with the exception of mattes, they’re quite different. They have a much denser and creamier consistency–you can feel the silicone in it–that makes it comparable to newer formulas like Make Up For Ever Artist Shadows, MAC Colour Drenched Pigments, and Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadows (to name a few). I personally find that NARS’ standard eyeshadow formula to be one of the weaker high-end formulations, though there are some that are great. This palette, overall, is significantly more pigmented, easier to work with, and more blendable than the majority of NARS eyeshadows I have tried to-date. I think the weakest point is that these creased on me at the seven-hour mark, so they definitely require a primer based on my testing for longevity.

The palette has a mirrored top, which collects fingerprints, and it feels slightly bulky overall (it’s similar in thickness as other NARS palettes released in the last year or so). The palette seems like a great value, which isn’t something that is always associated with higher-end palettes, but taking the price per ounce of their eyeshadow singles ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) means that this palette includes $300 worth of product.

L’Amour, Toujours L’Amour #1 is described as a “cream bisque.” It’s a light, yellow-toned beige with a matte finish. It had good color payoff with a soft, silky texture that wasn’t too powdery or too firm. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Too Faced Creamed Honey (LE, $16.00)(100% similar). L’Amour, Toujours L’Amour #2 is described as a “shimmering pink sand.” It’s a light, peachy-gold with warm, orange undertones and a frosted sheen. It had great color payoff with a creamy, smooth texture that applied well and blended out easily. The color started to crease after seven hours of wear. Tom Ford Beauty Opale (P, $45.00) is darker (95% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Dragon Scales #2 (LE, ) is more muted (95% similar). L’Amour, Toujours L’Amour #3 is described as an “amethyst ash.” It’s a medium-dark, taupe brown with warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a really smooth, almost cream-like texture that blended out well on the skin without losing intensity. The downside was that it creased after seven hours of wear. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a slightly drier texture that made it harder to blend out. This was one of the more disappointing shades in the palette, though it was workable. L’Amour, Toujours L’Amour #5 is described as a “golden starlight.” It’s a bright, light buttery yellow with warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had good pigmentation with a really thick, dense consistency that adhered well to bare skin but was a little hard to blend out without it “thickening” over the lid and emphasizing the skin’s natural texture. It lasted for seven hours before creasing. NABLA Cosmetics Immaculate (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Fresh Blade (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). It had so-so color payoff with a powdery texture that was harder to work with–it tended to look splotchy and uneven applied. Oh ,I’m kinda stumped on this one. Three duds pretty much. I had planned to get it if it reviewed well. But, it’s just okay. Idk, I’m going to need to think on it. I wear primer. So, I think it would be fine. But, with my stash overflowing, I’m finding myself preferring a better quality or very unique shadow color. I really am not into a formula that requires a base. Then, it doesn’t get used much. Hmmm..

I don’t own any of the foiled shadows yet either! lol. I’ll correct my comment. I said three duds when the last shadow had a dash for a score. I that that was a super low F! So, that bumped it up for me. This palette will be going to retailers right? I think I’ll feel more comfortable if I could actually return it if I don’t like it.

This is much better than I was expecting (knowing how some NARS palettes can be far lower in quality than their regular shadows). This scored nicely but the shades are all so dupe-able. But if I were newish to makeup or didn’t have way too much stuff already, this would be a wonderful palette – the sort you can reach for and not have to reach for anything else at all. I’m not crazy for the numbering system – I still prefer names to numbers. I’m curious, Christine – why no letter grade for #12.

Mariella Avatar

Hardly, Christine. Honestly, you maintain the best and most professional, objective makeup blog of all the ones I’ve seen. The occasional oversight is no biggie….and that’s when we, your loyal fans, let you know and feel like maybe we’re helping.

Maren Avatar

I’m giving some serious thought to this palette, since I have a visa gift card. Christine, can you think of any more recent palettes or beauty products that might be worth a look?

Raeanne Avatar

It seems decent enough, if you have enough space to put up with the bulky packaging. But I am personally disappointed in the blue – which would have made it more unique in a sea of neutrals. With a D+ and C+ in the mix, this is an easy pass.

It’s interesting how the shimmery shades are so much superior to the mattes, so I’m all for silicone in shadows, bring it on!! I feel most if the colors here are too dupe-able, except for that blue, which is pretty pathetic looking 🙁 I’m saving all my pennies for UD Vice Reloaded. IMO any spring palette that scores lower than an A is going to have a really tough time competing with that one –you get neutrals AND lots of colors, all in UD’s shadow formula

It’s so strange that Nars would revamp their eyeshadow formula and not communicate about it! I’ve had really poor experience with some Nars singles in the past, so I’m always very careful to check your reviews before I decide to buy a new one. They have some real hits but some abysmal misses.
This particular palette is nice overall but very dupable imo.

Christine Avatar

It just felt so noticeably different to me. As soon as I swatched the second shade in the palette, I was like, “Whoa, this is so dense,” and NARS tends to have much thinner eyeshadows. The ingredient list seemed pretty different than their singles they just relaunched as pans.

Fran Avatar

I like this. There are nine shades I’d use that scored decently to well. Although I have dupes for several, it still might be worth it, because it has everything I need for a neutral look that leans cool, which is pretty unusual. I’m going to have to think about this one, in spite of the disappointing blue and the orange I most likely won’t use much.

Fran Avatar

Definitely at least a look! I imagine I’ll probably end up getting it. I really do like the look of 3, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12, and would use 1, 2, and 5 for sure.

Paz Avatar

This looks a lot nicer than I thought, although the color selection reminds me of the Stila ‘A Whole Lot of Love’ palette, which I own. Definitely a pass for me!

Claire L Avatar

Not a bad palette but for some reason it doesn’t wow me. As Paz said, some shades are similar to the Stila palette which I’ve ordered, so I’ll pass on this one too.

Nathalia Avatar

Yeah, that blue is disappointing, but then again, that’s the shade I’d least wear out of this palette anyway. Plus, the selection of colors here really attracts me and I always wear eye primer no matter what. I’m going to think about it a little longer (maybe wait for some other spring releases), but I can feel I’m not gonna be able to resist the temptation of buying it lol

Quinctia Avatar

Or a drastically different formula than the others. A bunch of similarly formulated neutrals aren’t really accents, they’re just contour shades for your eyes.

Helene Avatar

I really, really like a few of the shades in this palette, the grey(ish) ones and the last one the shimmering licorice. That’s not enough to buy a palette, though so this is a pass for me. I think if the mattes had been better it would have been so much more interesting.
From what I could see I only have one of the dupes, and it’s for one of the greys, I will investigate the dupes for the other grey and for the lovley burgundy black licorice one.

Were I in the market for an eyeshadow palette, I’d consider this. Also, is that your camera I see reflected in the sixth photo? The one right after the photo of the back of the packaging, and right before the first swatch. Cool. 🙂

Yay, I was waiting for your review Christine! This palette (again) is too cool for my taste. I own the original Narsissist and don’t use over half of the shades b/c they are too cool. I get that Nars is doing some warm and some cool shades in order for it to compliment everyone, but it would be nice one day to see something like a cool vs warm versions of eye palettes, people may be more inclined to buy b/c they won’t have half the shades that are idle. Also, not sure why can’t they make the shadows the same quality as their singles/duos?

Thanx for the informative review. I am wondering one more thing… Is there any information about a release in Europe. Ordering it from the US means a additional 30 euro’s ?

Mouna Avatar

I posted a question regarding this palet coming to Europe. I can now happily inform you that it is available on narseurope.com ?

Selling price is the same as in dollars being € 59,00!
