Marc Jacobs The Wild One Eye-Conic Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
The Wild One
Marc Jacobs Beauty The Wild One Eye-Conic 20-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($99.00 for 0.56 oz.) contains 20 eyeshadows housed in an oversized compact (it was actually harder to open than I expected due to the way the clasp and palette are sized!). Overall, there were a lot of good shades in the palette, and the only real dud was a glittery shade that needs an adhesive/tacky base to work well (not at all a surprise). I liked how the color combination wasn’t the typical one we have seen in palettes, so it made it fun to use and encouraged creativity when I attempted to stay within the palette for looks.
Value
The brand’s 7-pan palette retails for $49.00 and contains 0.21 oz. or costs $233.33/oz. The palette contains $130.67 worth of eyeshadow at that cost per ounce.

Paper Tiger
Paper Tiger is a light-medium beige with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff with a very soft, silky consistency that did kick up excess product in the pan and had a bit of fallout when I tried it on my brow bone. The eyeshadow lasted for just over seven and a half hours on me.

Sheepish
Sheepish is a light, pinky lavender with subtle, cool undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage in a single layer, though I was able to pack it on and get opaque coverage with two layers. The consistency was soft, moderately dense, and blendable on the lid. It started to crease faintly after eight and a half hours of wear.

Hen Party
Hen Party is a medium-dark copper with strong, brown undertones and flecks of larger pink and plum sparkle. It was the glitter-bomb shade in the palette, and as a result, it just did not work well on its own. It was decent for patting on top of other products, but it worked better with a dampened brush or with a glitter adhesive. There was some fallout when used on its own over an eight-hour period.

Shame about hen party!
Does anyone else try and guess Christine’s score before you look? LOL. I gave this a C- on first look. I didn’t think the quality would hold. So B+, huh? I was way off.
MJ has lost a lot of cred with me lately too. Certainly not in the Too Faced league, but some of his stuff has been not very good at all. Really a mixed bag overall.
Interesting, I didn’t think it looked like a C- at all based on swatches. Hen Party was the one shade I didn’t expect much from but that was from the glittery texture alone!
LOL I totally do
Now I’m in some deep trouble, because I already have ND Lila on my WL,, and now this one has landed there as well!!! That’s a lot of moola!!! Yes, this one is far more impressive than I would have expected. Definitely see what you mean by the more unusual color layout making challenging you to be more creative!
When did Marc Jacobs s tart using Mineral Oil in their formulas? What a disappointment. I expect that from cheaper brands like sleek and morphe but I like higher quality ingredients from a $100 palette.
Perhaps with the new formula they released this year? Though, like all things, I imagine there are grades in the quality of any particular ingredient.
Yikes – I avoid mineral oil, it gives me milia around the eyes – didn’t know it could be an eyeshadow ingredient, guess I’ll be reading ingredients lists now
It’s a pretty terrific palette – lots of beautiful shades to mix and match with, and apart from one shade, everything else is almost perfect. Lots to love in this palette. Thank you for the review Christine. Your eye looks are beautiful.
Thank you, Genevieve!
Some very pretty colors here, but too expensive for me, I love the packaging, though!!
If you’re going to go big- why Too Faced, Huda or a few Tom Ford lipsticks that barely appear? This is stunning and well executed on every level. Cruelty free and well designed, it’s Marc Jacobs for the win. Plus the names are adorable and not pateonizingly predictable.
At this price point ($100 bucks US or $124 Canadian), I would want a higher rating than a B+. Early Bird is so much like a colour in the Edgitorial palette (which I returned) – and it was a shade and texture that were both not great for me.
I was loving this from photos, and hemmed and hawed too long on last year’s, which I didn’t like as much. I’m hoping it’s in store tomorrow when I make the trek to Sephora. I trust your reviews to make that final buy/pass decision.
I think it’s really pretty. It’s too bad about Hen Party, although for me having to use a tacky base with a single glittery shade wouldn’t be a deal breaker.
I got this palette a couple weeks ago, and I am IN LOVE! I haven’t used any other eye shadow since this arrived. The color combination in this palette is so different than everything else out there that it is really feeding my creativity. I always use a primer, and every shade, even Hen Party, have been performing like a dream. I work 16 hour shifts, and these shadows are holding up the whole time. Way to go, Marc Jacobs!
Happy to hear you’ve loving your palette, Nique!
Pass for me, but I do like the look of the palette especially the more colors.
I will be looking at the dupes for Nest Egg and Chameleon as they have caught my eye.
I was hoping you were going to dislike this palette! I’ve been back and forth on it. I’m saving your link and going to think about it now. Thanks for your review!
My pleasure, Michele!
I’m sure glitter glue will make Hen Party work. I’ve always wanted one of the Marc Jacobs 20 pan palettes, so maybe this year I’ll splurge during the VIB sale
I like the unique color combination. There are seven shadows that I would definitely use and some of them not so often. Cat’s Fight, Early Bird, Crow’s Nest, Bull’s Eye, and Early Bird are my faves. Each one is gorgeous. Early Bird is just my type of gold. Still not sure. The mineral oil as a main ingredient is definitely not what I want to see in higher priced formulas. It’s an industrial petroleum after product and unlike other plant derived oils conveys no nutrients to the skin and can lead to break out. I think it’s one thing to put say, petroleum on cracked heels and quite another to put an oil like that on the face.
I love this palette. At first glance, I didn’t really understand the color theory. But – reading each row “down” gets four colors that in my opinion work well together, so I have been using the palette that way, with some deviation of course but the four in the columns are no-brainer combos for me.
Quality is there, even without primer its okay in my opinion however i don’t really pack on eyeshadow, I think I use a lighter hand because office setting. I have no doubt these would pack an incredible punch over primer.
Idk what possessed me to get this – I think its the variety. I don’t like the packaging but I love the palette now thats true love!
I just bought myself this palette as a gift to myself for the holidays because I saw it was on sale at sephora. When I first saw this review I felt let down, but over the course of 4 or so trips to sephora either out of boredom or someone asking me to come with them and help them make choices and buy products, I fell in love with it! I’d always swatch it and think wow these colors are the kinds I’m more drawn to, what a nice array of tones and textures, and they always swatched well on me even through different locations. I’m so glad I picked it up on sale, to me this has pretty much anything I’d need for any kind of look so I’m super pleased!
