ColourPop Misunderstood Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Misunderstood
ColourPop Misunderstood 15-Pan Shadow Palette ($22.00 for 0.60 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette that has an almost jewel-toned vibe with grounding shades like gray, black, and brown. I definitely wish they had gone full-on with color and deeper shades, rather than throwing in shades like Devious and Tragic, more typical, transition brown hues–like a mattes in deep green, berry, or purple. It’s a nice palette, and I think those who like the bright, sparkly shades from ColourPop and aren’t adverse to a little fallout during application (or using those shades with a wet brush) should enjoy the palette.

No Spots
No Spots is a soft white with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage with a soft, velvety texture that was just a touch powdery in the pan but managed to keep most of its intensity when applied to bare skin. The eyeshadow was blendable along the edges and didn’t have too much fallout when I applied it to my brow bone, but the strong white base (duh!) makes it preferable to apply it prior to other products if applying it onto a higher point like the brow bone. This shade stayed on well for eight hours before fading a bit.

Formula Overview
$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce
The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours.
The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Mongrels
Mongrels is a light, champagne beige with warm undertones and a sparkling, high-shine finish. It had a softer, more loosely-pressed feel to it, so it was easy to pick up too much product and to get fallout during application. I highly recommend using a flat brush to pick up and then press and pack where desired, then blended after that, or use it with a wet brush. It had buildable pigmentation from semi-opaque to fully opaque in two layers. This shade lasted well for eight hours with slight fallout over time.

Diablo
Diablo is a bright chartreuse green with warm, golden undertones and a sparkling metallic finish. The pigmentation was ridiculous–opaque coverage in one layer to the point where a little went a long way. It was so cream-like, smooth, and shiny, and it applied evenly and nearly blended itself. It wore well for eight and a half hours before creasing slightly on me.

Devious
Devious is a muted, light-medium orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, while the texture was soft and blendable without being too softly nor too firmly pressed in the pan. This shade stayed on nicely for eight hours on me before it started to fade visibly.

Tragic
Tragic is a medium peach with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. It had excellent color payoff that applied well to bare skin with a smooth, even application that diffused easily along the edges. The texture was soft, a little powdery in the pan, but it maintained its intensity when applied. It lasted well for eight hours on me before I noticed signs of wear.

Underworld
Underworld is a medium, coppery brown with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The pigmentation was opaque in one layer, which applied well to bare skin with smooth, even lay down of color but there was a touch of fallout. The consistency was lightly creamy, smooth, and blendable with a slightly looser press overall. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me with very slight fallout over time.

Pain and Panic
Pain and Panic is a medium-dark gold with strong, warm undertones and a glittering, metallic finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff in a single layer, which built up to full coverage with a second layer or was opaque in one layer if applied wet (which also enhanced the shininess). The texture was lightly creamy, dense without being thick, and felt almost emollient as it glided across my lip. The micro-glitter adhered well to my lid dry, which was a nice surprise, and there was just a bit of fallout of the glittery bits during blending. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours with a bit of fallout over time.

Flotsam
Flotsam is a soft pink with warm undertones and a sparkling finish that shifted from pink to blue. The consistency was soft, more loosely pressed, so I had to use a lighter hand to ensure I wasn’t over-picking up product and to avoid fallout. It applied best by patting and pressing it onto my lid, while the edges blended out with ease. It wore well for eight hours on me before it started to fade on me.

The Fates
The Fates is a deep, inky navy blue with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was opaque in one layer, while the consistency felt velvety and smooth but denser, a little more substantial. I feared it wouldn’t blend well but ended up having no issues with it in practice. It stayed on well eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

LELimited Edition. $4.50.
Revenge (Misunderstood)
Revenge (Misunderstood) is a medium-dark black with neutral-to-cool undertones and silver sparkle over a more semi-matte finish. It had rich pigmentation with a smooth, lightly emollient texture that felt dense without being too firmly-pressed in the pan. The eyeshadow adhered well to my skin and blended out without much effort. It lasted nicely for eight hours on me before I noticed any fading, but there were a few stray sparkles that had dropped.

Sing
Sing has a blackened burgundy base with warmer, lighter plum shimmer and sparkle. The consistency was lightly creamy but still managed to be almost powdery at times, and I had noticeable fallout with this shade during application. I also felt like the edges didn’t diffuse as seamlessly as I wanted, and they had a bit of a dryness/jaggedness to them as a result. It wore well for eight hours on me before I noticed slight fading.

Jetsam
Jetsam is a blackened, blue-leaning teal with cool undertones and a sparkling sheen. The texture was smooth to the touch, had some slip (but definitely a powder!), and adhered well to my lid with just a touch of fallout. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with a little more on top. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably but had a bit of fallout over time.

Jetsam
LELimited Edition. $4.50.
Facile
Facile is a medium-dark, forest green with warm undertones and a sparkling, frosted finish. It had rich color coverage in one layer with a slightly more loosely-pressed consistency. There was a bit of fallout as I applied and blended it out on my eye, but it was quite manageable–the kind where you can dust away but don’t have to deliberately do eyes first so you can do major clean up. It blended out beautifully, and it had a really nice finish on my skin that was sparkling without being thick or emphasizing. It lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

101
101 is a soft, charcoal black with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation with a soft, velvety texture that was slightly powdery in the pan, but it applied evenly and wasn’t prone to sheering out or dropping fallout. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading slightly.

This is a really gorgeous, cohesive palette. I agree that jewel-toned mattes instead of browns would have been nice, but I’m still really pleased with this. I can’t wait to get mine.
I like the navy blue, but the remainder of the palette does not hold anything new for me.
The middle row I like in this and the last row is fine (although black I wish was more punchy instead of toeing the line of greyish black), the navy, and the white makes sense. The rest were a missed opportunity as any CP fan has most of those at least once or twice over and they are great. We don’t need them over and over again.
I would have loved to have seen (in any finish – matte, shimmer, or glitter) electric blue and turquoise blue for Hades (turquoise also works for Ursula), lavendar and bright yellow for Ursula, sparkly candy apple red for Cruella, matte red for Evil Queen, a true mid tone or deep gray for Ursula or Cruella… works for most of them tbh.
I just don’t think this was vivid enough for me.
Lauren, I absolutely agree about the electric blue for Hades and the need for a red to really bring out the vampy jeweled vibe. Underworld (why a relatively neutral metallic? Why?) and Pain & Panic were seriously missed opportunities! They also could have made Flotsam & Jetsam one color like Pain & Panic to add a punch of dark red–Poison Apple was wasted on the Princess palette, I think.
All in all though, I grabbed it first chance I got at my local Ulta and have been loving it. The only shade I have yet to really use in its greatest capacity is Mongrels.
It’s everything that I was hoping it would be in the quality and also most of the shade choices CP made for it! Like you said, though, I concur that they ought to have gone full throttle gothy and villianess with it. Sing could have been a matte, for instance.
I’m so glad that I bought this as soon as it was available.
I would’ve liked Flotsam & Jetsam next to each other.
Also…. there are many villains that they could use for another collection if this is well received, and they could really go even darker and moodier.
I find myself not liking this palette as much as I thought I would….those matte browns and orange shades, two blacks and the navy blue matte that would be really hard to wear. Facile and Jetsom were my favourite shades. But it is a lovely move away from very warm neutrals for the brand.
I’m using Diablo in my first look when my palette arrives! That green is calling me and I’m not typically drawn to to this shade of green.
Totally agree Christine, they could have done a little better with color selection of the matte shades. Not sure why there are 2 blacks but whatever.
Nice video! I actually like this palette’s color story; Flotsam and Mongrel are too close, but other than that one gripe, I dig it — I get an actual villain vibe from the non-neutrals.
Deep inky blue, matte eyeshadow with A rating, that’s impressive!
I’m quite excited for this palette and happy it got a great review! I have the Disney Princess palette and I think that will be a great companion palette to this Villains palette. Also, with the darker colors they did include, I think it will be quite easy to get a dark, smokey look, as those dark colors can go a long way. It was pretty smart of them to include some bright shades and duochromes to mix it up, in my opinion.
Wow, Colourpop has been knocking it out of the park in terms of quality lately! I do wish they would bring out a little less products and be a bit bolder in their colour choices, but in the end, they have to sell. I’m crossing my fingers for a nine pan blue palette, like the purple and green palettes they did recently.
I have been looking to get some colourpop items into my collection for a while now. I think this collection will be a fun way to do it since reading the other comments it seems like this is a nice grouping of things and shades they are known for. Kind of a bummer for those who already own some of their products, but for a new consumer like myself it will be nice.
I have to comment on the sloppy graphics of the names underneath the actual shadows. How could the spacing be so off? How could someone sign off on this? Either there was no quality control at the printer or no care was put into the placement of the words on the designer end. This annoys me so much! It reminds me of the similar amateurish graphics on the Emily Edit Needs Palette.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Colourpop is too good of a brand to have the graphics look that off-center, especially for such a hyped release.
