What were your favorites from the last month? First Aid Beauty Coconut Smoothing Priming Moisturizer (I love that this gives a slight luminescence, and it smells like Sweet Tarts, lol), Viseart Grande Pro Palette, Amethyst Palette and Petit Pro palette, Laura Geller Baked Highlighting Duo in French Vanilla/Portofino, Wet n Wild Hello Halo Liquid Highlighter in Halo Goodbye, Colourpop Super Shock Shadow in Frog and Wattles, Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer, Missha M BB Cream with Urban Decay One and Done, Laura Mercier Baked Matte Radiance Highlight… wow I had a lot of faves this month!
What didn’t impress you? If something doesn’t impress me, I don’t tend to use it, lol, so nothing this month!
Did you return anything you purchase? I didn’t return anything!
Or successfully resist temptation? All new releases! I’m on a make up no buy this year to use up some of my collection, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to resist temptation for everything that I don’t need.
Based on your reviews (and the recommendations of others), I’d love to try something by Colour Pop or Pat McGrath. However, since I live in the Netherlands, their products are a bit tricky to come buy. I’m also very tempted to get my hands on the Sia Viva Glam lipstick by Mac, but I made a promise to myself to try and spend less money on makeup.
…So far I’ve mostly spent that money on skincare instead, so I wouldn’t consider the effort successful.
Lol and ditto.
Essence mascara volume stylist curl and hold version ( pink and black) continues to amaze me. Been using it for months and used it on the lower lash( I rarely do this my lower lashes are Long and most tend to smear) and it did great! For $4 it’s unbelievable.
I tried some new concealers.. makeup revolution and Catrice and found them to both be exceptional, noncreasing! Catrice looks grey in the container but fine on my face.
I bought wet and wild photofocus and wet and wild mega cushion foundations both seem nice but I haven’t tried them more than once.
Blown away by wet and wild highlighter powder in blossom glow!! Amazing and $4.99
Also in love with Colourpop Flexitarian.. beautiful silver highlighter.
Been using flower beauty sponge to apply highlighter…. love that application.
Bought some lit stuff and the blue cover fx glitter drops but haven’t used much.
I’ve given up on Colourpop concealer. It looks cakey creasey on mr… sad I love the brand.
Colourpop boy lipstick… horrible.
I’m returning Fenty Foundation followed color chart bit too light and too yellow! Love the finish hope to get another that matches better.
I resisted little.
Concurring with most of your observations. Got the MUR in 3 ‘cool’ shades and they are 1000% better than CP, which goes dry and flaky, even on oily skin. Fenty IS too yellow, in all lt to med cool shades. The SAs were shocked, literally, when I switched, but I always have that problem: not too warm, too yellow. You might want to order the Koh Gen Do sample set from their site. Which Catrice?
I got Porcelain and light beige Catrice conclealers kjh. I’m neutral too it’s tricky when you buy online I agree and I’ve been lucky as I’ve bought quite a few foundations lately and done well until the Fenty. I ‘be heard some say neutral can be ashy so I sometimes try to go with a hint of something. I’m warm in summer so a bit of Golden works but yellow or orange never works. Glad to hear CP didn’t work for you seems everyone loves it!
What were your favorites from the last month? Urban decay all-nighter (rediscovered favourite), Marc jacobs shameless foundation, loreal manga mascara, glossier boy brow
What didn’t impress you? Glossier solution – broke me out like crazy
Did you return anything you purchased? No, but I only bought one beauty product in the month (technically ordered Beccaxsananas highlighter but haven’t received it yet).
Or successfully resist temptation? Haven’t picked up vanilla quartz highlighter from becca… yet
What were your favorites from the last month? KVD Studded Crème Lipstick in Ludwig, Sephora Lipstories in Brunch Date, and MAC Viva Glam VI lipstick (I’m going through a nude lipstick phase). Also, Bare Minerals BarePro Performance Wear Liquid Foundation in Sateen 05 and Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Vol. 1 eyeshadow palette.
What didn’t impress you? IT Cosmetics Hello Lashes
Did you return anything you purchased? IT Cosmetics Hello Lashes (I usually don’t like returning makeup, but this product made my eyes sting and water.)
Or successfully resist temptation? I came very close to buying a Chanel lipstick, but I successfully walked away empty-handed. And it’s a good thing because I already have seven of the dupes on Temptalia’s dupe list for that shade!
The dupe lists on here are just the best aren’t they?! 😀 x
Favorites last month: Viseart Tryst Palette, Hourglass Ambient Light Bronzer, Hourglass Ambient Light Blush in Diffused Heat.
What didn’t impress: Viseart Eye Shadow Primer. Separates even worse than Too Faced Shadow Insurance and that is saying something.
No returns.
Resisted temptation: Nothing. I purchased pretty much everything I wanted. There is an eye shadow from Dior that is limited edition coming out in only one store in Japan and who knows if it will every reach the US. I have my Japanese contact ready to be there the moment it is available. It is one of those things where it is really going to depend on how popular it is and where you are in line. I think it is available the first part of April so probably the summer release. Says something that I gave him carte blanche to buy it and anything else he sees that I might like from the release!! I love Dior shadows and they always seem to work for me so I usually pick up any that are in colors I like. So this question next month will have the same answer, I resisted nothing and I regret nothing!!
My husband is talking about a trip to Tokyo in a year or two and all I can think about is going shopping for makeup and skin care.
I am so envious that you are going to Japan. I would be in the makeup stores from morning to night!! I am going to Europe in the fall and am excited to shop in Paris. I doubt there will be much I can’t get here but the idea of buying it in Paris will be a nice reminder of my trip. I have only ever been to Canada and Mexico and have always wanted to go to Europe. I decided that this is the year before I get any older and maybe lose some stamina so I chose Europe. If I remain healthy Japan and South Korea are on my list for the next time, assuming we are not at war by then! I am not a great flyer which has also impacted my desire to travel but decided that I just needed to get over that so planning on taking a half of an Ativan and taking a night flight so hopefully I will sleep, LOL. Can’t wait to see your haul list when you get back!
Alas, this trip won’t happen for at least a year. Japan has uncomfortable winters and summers so the travel windows are small. But with any luck we will all be here then to share the experiences. Your Paris trip will be amazing. City Pharma is the place for skincare and there will be things there you won’t find here. There is an amazing drugstore “first aid” cream called Biafine that cured my overzealous exfoliation in two days. And Monoprix (their Target but better) is amazing as well. So rest up!
Thank you so much for the suggestions, Lesley. I am glad to hear that there is a chance I will be able to find a unique product to bring home as a “souvenir”. I assumed and probably will, pick up a perfume in France.
Your trip to Japan will be here before you know it. So far 2018 has been flying by.
I also bought the Viseart primer but haven’t tried it yet. I’m planning on returning it to Beautylish if the separation and packaging prove to be too much of a problem for me after a few uses, but I was won over by the positive reviews that seemed to love it despite those issues.
Emily,
I was really expecting to love it since several reviews that I watched indicated that it really smoothed the eye lid and made eye shadow appear more vibrant, smoother and last longer. I was really disappointed. With the Too Faced Shadow Insurance once I massaged the tube it would stay together at least for a few days. The Viseart had to be massaged everyday which was just a pain the behind. I also didn’t find that it worked any better than the Too Faced and definitely not as well as the Milani primer. I always assume that it is just either my particular tube or my preferences so hope it works for you. I have given up on it after trying to make it work for a week.
Most impressive purchase: Chikuhodo Z 1
Favorites of February: From my stash I really enjoyed Bite Beauty Boysenberry, NARS Liquid blush in Orgasm, and Bobbi Brown highlighter in Pink Glow.
Didn’t impress me: PUR Eye Polish Pure Pigment Primer.
Returned: See above.
Resisted temptation: it’s been an entire month of resisting temptation! I’ve been tempted by Viseart’s Tryst and Pro II, Natasha Denona’s new blush palettes, all the Mothership palettes, and multiple foundations and brushes. I am eagerly anticipating the New eyeshadow palettes being released by Natasha Denona and Pat McGrath this coming week. I am holding back to see the reviews and to let the hype settle. It remains to be seen what, if anything, I will actually purchase.
Favorites from last month: I was working to use things up so I wore Benefjt Benetint on my cheeks every day. It is flattering but having rosy cheeks limited my other makeup choices. If I wanted to use the Huda Beauty mauve palette, I had to make sure I was not wearing a red sweater or my red glasses.
What didn’t impress me: Wet n Wild cushion foundation. It is not the right formula for me. With Smashbox primer, it broke apart and turned into a greasy mess after only four hours. It wore better over the Tarte primer but still did little for my skin.
Did I return anything? No, because I could not find the receipt for the Wet n’ Wild.
Did I resist temptation? No. I ended up buying the Viseart Tryst palette.
What were your favourites from the last month? From your reviews, I was really impressed with the Colour Pop lipsticks
Personally I am really impressed with the Elizabeth Arden’s Cayenne Pearl lipsticks – gorgeous shade of red/brown
My Huda Beauty Smokey Obsession palette I love too.
What didn’t impress you? I am not impressed with all the warm toned palettes that keep coming out and that some of the eye shadows are disappointing in quality. For myself, I am happy with my purchases.
Did you return anything you purchase? No can do easily here and I haven’t.
Or successfully resist temptation? Not really well on lipsticks as I ordered a few more from EA. And hopefully the Nars Sabra eyeshadow in plum will be the shade I need.
What were your favorites from the last month? Anastasia brow powder duo in Taupe, MUFE Full Cover Concealer (I try other concealers but always come back to this one.), OCC Dust nail polish, Fenty Ya Dig? lipstick.
What didn’t impress you? Tarte’s implicitly racist limited shade range. Sucks because I tried Shape Tape at Ulta and my first impression was that it genuinely did seem like The Best undereye concealer, but I don’t buy base products from brands with abysmal shade ranges. :/
Did you return anything you purchased? I returned ABH Brunette brow gel for being too red. The lighter option was too blonde for me and the darker option was too dark. Replaced it with MAC Soft Brown which I’d describe as medium ashy brown, and is better than the Anastasia in every way. Color, price, ability to coat tiny fine hairs: all better with the MAC one.
Or successfully resist temptation? Skipped Cover FX Lunar Glitter Drops, Halo liquid highlighter, and G+40 powder (I wanted it as a bronzer because my skin gets more olive with sun). None of these are necessarily off the table forever, but I have comparable products right now and will revisit them when I run out. Also held off on Kevyn Aucoin contour powder because I have a little NYX Taupe blush left.
What were your favorites from the last month? Discovering MJ Dew Drops, huge boost for me. My skin was getting winter-makes-me-boring looking and it just has a wonderful glow.
What didn’t impress you? I tried my first Lipstick Queen products: Eden, Medieval, and Frog Prince. Blah. Did nothing for me. In fact, less than nothing. I’m not sure why, they weren’t bad colors but with my skin tone they looked unnatural. I do like the Belle Epoque but not the lipsticks.
Also, Nordstrom’s ticked me off (not impressed this time) as I ordered the Chantecaille Philanthropy palette, twice, and each time they didn’t bubble wrap or pad them at all. They replaced it free but the second was equally messed up. Given their price, I don’t understand why they aren’t more travel-stable.
Did you return anything you purchase? I did return a Chantecaille Save the Wolves as it arrived in a box of dust. Same with their blush.
Or successfully resist temptation? Resisted that new MJ Set of all the Coconut products (it was $75 and a steal) only because they sold out. I tried to resist the Cult Beauty bag but just couldn’t. I did resist the Saks and Neiman Marcus bags this time, as I was going to get some items anyway but their websites are junk and couldn’t get things to work. So I guess I only resisted temptation by chance!
What were your favorites from the last month? Of new purchases, I’d have to say the Smashbox Night Shoot e/s trio; generally, the Anastasia Mario Palette and Vermeer single; Smashbox Red Rage and MAC Capricious lipsticks
What didn’t impress you? what really didn’t impress me is the loss of the only Chanel cosmetic counter in my city….GRRR.
Did you return anything you purchase? Nope
Or successfully resist temptation? Sure – I was going to purchase a few moisturizer items (Tatcha and Drunk Elephant) but I’ve already got so many serums, oils and moisturizers open and in use that it seems really ridiculous to add more and not finish anything.
Favorites : MAC Extended Play Gigablack Lash Mascara, MAC Studio Fix Fluid, ABH Prism Palette, Chanel Bronzer Soleil Tan, Cover Girl Tru Blend Blush in Medium Rose & MAC Day Gleam Pressed Pigment
What didn’t impress : Loreal Voluminous Lash Paradise and It Cosmetics Superhero mascaras. Meh
No returns
I haven’t been interested in much. Just waiting for ABH Soft Glam to come to Ulta so I can use my points!
Favourites for Feb : Really enjoyed using my MAC Whenever You Call eyeshadow teamed with Marc Jacobs Jetaime lipstick which I’ve finished. I’ve also discovered No7 cuticle cream and their beauty blender sponges. The cream is so nourishing. I’ve bought a back up tube to keep at work (and qualify for GWP).
What didn’t impress you : First Aid Beauty primer. Whilst the texture and it’s effectively are good it made my foundation look Matte (which admittedly it is). I prefer to use a Glory primer that enables my foundation to glow. Had to buy an illuminating cream to mix with it. Also, used A Caudalie serum which was underwhelming compared to the Bare Minerals Intense Power Serum I’m now going to switch to.
I returned an Elemis kit that I bought on line. I bought it to qualify for a GWP but the online company didn’t send it, saying it was out of stock.
I’m really bad with GWP offers. Bought quite a bit from No7 to qualify for GWP. Saying that part of the GWP was the above mentioned Illuminating cream that I wanted.
What were your favorites from the last month? Pat McGrath Decadence palette . . .love the packaging.
What didn’t impress you? When MAC sold out of their Lunar New Year collection so fast – I hate LE mind games. Same goes for Bite Amuse Bouche Pisces. Also MAC Jeremy Scott collection – what a bust. I feel like the quality c/should have been so much better with that, especially since they really got creative with with packaging.
Did you return anything you purchase? No
Or successfully resist temptation? So far, all of the Pat McGrath Mothership palettes. I keep putting them in and taking them out of my cart. I have 2 and 3 dupes for most of the palettes that I want (Sublime, Subversive and Decadence). I don’t need the palettes and to be honest, I don’t really want them but I feel like I should get them and I’m fighting fomo. I know the hype is well deserved, and if I didn’t have so much already I would jump on it. With what I have now, though, I’d be buying under fomo stress and then end up not using it/them because everytime I see it/them, I only remember the anxiety around buying it/them and can’t enjoy it/them. **Fun fact – I haven’t used anything from MAC Selena because of the hype leading up to it, madness that surrounded me finally being able to get my hands on it, then only to see it at my CCO 3 months later for 50% off. It was such a big deal at the time and now . . . crickets. That has definitely put things into perspective for me.** I just recently did my taxes and seeing what I gave away/donated in 2017 was an eye opener.
Also regarding PGL, is anyone else left feeling a little . . .strange about some of the imagery? I am getting pretty persnickety about aesthetics and packaging and I couldn’t put my finger on it until the other day but there’s something about it that feels macabre or kind of haunted to me. The imagery and all the static images on her videos (not the tutorial or swatch videos) at the PGL site feel a little Marilyn Mansonesque to me and I don’t like it. Not crazy about the fly on the mouth imagery of the Sublime palette and the Subversive palette imagery is a little creepy. Then again I love the Decadence imagery, the packaging of the palettes in general (except no labels is weird) and the Luxetrance packaging. Go figure.
What were your favorites from the last month?
That I bought: ABH Matte Lipstick in Dead Roses; Kat von D x Divine lipstick; Apocalyptic Beauty Blush in Till the End (LE); MAC Viva Glam Sia; NARS Freesoul; Notoriously Morbid Ghouls & Graves Collection.
That I haven’t bought: NARS Rêve Salé and Coucher de Solei HIghlighter Palettes; Sephora Lipstories Lipsticks; ColourPop Lux Lipsticks.
What didn’t impress you? Sitla Glitter & Glow Highlighters; Tom Ford Private Shadows; Kat von D Studded Kiss reformulation; MUFE Artist Shadow reformulation; ABH Soft Glam Palette (color selection, not quality); Smashbox eyeshadow trios; Becca Ocean Jewels palette
Did you return anything you purchased? No
Or successfully resist temptation? Pat McGrath Mothership Palette; half of the Too Faced Life’s a Festival Collection; Devinah Somewhere Over the Rainbow Collection
Oh, I wasn’t disappointed in that awful MAC x Jeremy Scott collection. The packaging was so cool, but the quality was awfully sad.
*was disppointed. I don’t know where my brain is today. Sorry.
