Hex Remedy

Urban Decay Hex Remedy Holiday 2018 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Set ($29.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a new, limited edition five-piece eyeliner set. I’m a fan of Urban Decay’s pencil formula (I keep all shades out on my vanity!), and Perversion has a go-to whenever I’m looking for a black eyeliner for years. I’d love to see a shade like Space Dust added to their permanent offerings as it’s not the most common shade. I wish Voodoo performed better, but the other four were fairly good.

The set includes $78.75 worth of eyeliner as the full-sized eye pencils retail for $21.00 and include 0.04 oz., which makes this set a great value if more than two shades appeal to you!

Perversion

Perversion is a rich, inky black with a matte finish. It was richly pigmented and had a smooth, creamy texture that glided across my lower lash line and waterline. The eyeliner stayed on well for nine and a half hours before starting to thin noticeably on me.

Formula Overview

$22.00/0.04 oz. - $550.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to go on "smoothly, stay soft and super-creamy for blending" before it "dries to a long-lasting finish that won't budge" with "intense" coverage. I'm a long-time fan and user of the formula--almost a decade now--and they're still a go-to. I keep a handful of formulas at my fingertips, and I have all of the shades from this range in a cup within reach.

It isn't the longest-wearing formula I've come across, but I find that it balances longevity with creaminess in application and ease of removal at the end. They also wear away "kindly," so while the line might get thinner, it doesn't drag or bleed toward my under eye area. The formula has solid, long-wear at eight to 10 hours before fading, thinning, or having a bit of migration to the outer corner. The less shimmery shades tend to have the most visible movement, whereas the more shimmery shades tend to fade or thin.

The pigmentation varies a lot from shade to shade with more matte shades often having the most coverage in a single layer, followed by more metallic finishes. The more glittery the finish, the weaker the coverage and application were. Many of the shades in the range are buildable and apply with near-to or opaque coverage when applied in short, overlapping strokes. The majority are very comfortable to apply on the lower lash line or waterline.

They have a creamy, glide-on consistency as promised, and they can be smudged or blended out, so they are particularly useful for someone who likes a more diffused look for their eyeliner.

As someone who has had a lot of these eyeliners over time, I can attest to the fact that they do not dry out readily. Some of the shades I have that I don't use (because they're THAT old) are still creamy and glide-on when swatched.

Space Dust

Space Dust is a bright, dirty gold with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which applied evenly and smoothly across my lash line. The texture was lightly creamy, smooth, and didn’t drag or tug during application. It lasted for eight and a half hours on me before starting to thin a bit.

Goddess is a blackened navy blue with lighter blue sparkle and finer pearl. It had semi-sheer coverage in a single layer, but it was buildable to nearly opaque coverage in two to three passes. The texture was lightly creamy, emollient, and comfortable to apply to my waterline and lower lash line as it did not tug or drag. It wore well for nine and a half hours on me.

Voodoo

Voodoo is a medium purple with cooler undertones and a pearl sheen. It had semi-sheer pigmentation that was buildable to semi-opaque coverage in two to three passes. The texture was more emollient and had more slip, which seemed to contribute to the sheerer coverage and some unevenness in application, though when worn tightly against the lash line it was hard to see unevenness (such a thin area). It wore well for eight and a half hours on me.

Tempting, especially for me for Starlight. But I have UD Lucky (close but darker) and MJ Glitz Blitz (which I love), and also an old Revlon copper liner (don’t remember name) that is surprisingly durable. So I’m probably set. Money saved.

dzymzlzy Avatar

I have so many colored liners from UD, Stila and MJB that I wasn’t going to buy this but several of these are quite different than anything I have and with the price it’s totally worth it for that. I don’t have anything like Starfire or Space Dust simply because they’d likely dry out before I put much of a dent in them. This way it’s not so tragic to lose a whole pencil. I own and wear a lot of purples so I’m not that disappointed in Voodoo’s performance. But it might be nice if they gave it a less offensive name.

How I wish Space Dust was available as a single! As soon as I saw it, I thought of that gorgeous BM 5 AM pencil from years ago that was available for such a short time and, I think, not available here at all. And – lo and behold – it’s one of the listed dupes! Christine, do you know if these are considered “waterline safe”?

miska Avatar

Hey Christine, speaking of waterlines…have you ever heard/read anything about purple colored eye products being irritating to the eyes? I know this is off subject but I have noticed that I need to be very cautious when introducing purple colored eye products to my makeup routine. Sorry to get off subject but the “waterline” made it pop up in my head.

miska Avatar

Hey Nancy, you may want to check out Ulta’s brand name gel eyeliners. I swear they’re a very close dupe to the UD eye liner pencils at half of the price! My eyes are easily irritated and I haven’t experienced any problems with them. They glide on like butter and have an impressive shade selection.

Helena Avatar

I’ve been really tempted by this set just for Space Dust (I’ll say it again, I need more pewter!), but given that I already have Voodoo, Perversion (one and a half pencils, actually), MAC’s Petrol Blue, and CP’s Get Paid,…it really WOULD be JUST for Space Dust. So I’ll just keep mixing gold and silver for the foreseeable future, lol.

kjh Avatar

This set is a must have for me yearly. It was out so early, I thought it was for fall. UDs are my best-fit for pencils. Like the size, smaller than full, bigger than mini.

Aj Avatar

I seriously might break my no buy for this.
UD is bringing that value for the price, and I really like all of the shades. Plus Starfire might be able to replace a different UD eyeliner I have and am almost done with. (can’t think of the name off the top of my head)
And Space Dust is something I didn’t think I needed in my life, and now I do lol.

Seraphine Avatar

I used to use UD 24/7 pencils all the time, but they required constant touch-ups because they would run on me, but they were better than anything else I tried (until MJ Highliners, which are my HG eyeliners now). Too bad, because UD has so many great shades!

miska Avatar

Hi Seraphine, I mentioned to another reader about Ulta’s name brand of gel eyeliners. I stumbled upon them trying to find a cheaper dupe to the UD eye pencils. They glide on so smooth and the shade range is pretty impressive. I’ve read/heard several complaints that the MJ eyeliners seem to dry out. Have you had any issues with that yourself? That’s the one thing that’s held me back from making the purchase.

Z Avatar

I’ve got a VooDoo from a previous set that is definitely one of, if not the, crappiest Urban Decay pencil I own. Despite that, this set is on my holiday wishlist. Thanks for the swatches!

Chris Avatar

Sometimes if a color does really well in a Holiday set, it becomes part of the permanent collection. We can hope that UD sells many of this set! I keep the pencils within reach in my medicine cabinet. The majority sit in a Container Store lucite 12 opening lipstick holder. Each opening hold 4 pencils. Plus this cube has 4 single holes (for more pencils).

I like the other black — Zero. It looks better on me. This aHex set is going to be my stocking gift.

lee Avatar

Has the formula changed for these pencils? I have some that are over a year old doing fantastic but during the Rouge sale a few weeks ago I picked up Alkaline and Mainline and both are terrible, barely showing up despite being soft and colour splitting with even a bit of liquid. Did I just happen to pick up 2 bum shades or are they just not great anymore? I so want this set but not if they’ll perform this badly.
