Urban Decay Distortion Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches

Distortion

Urban Decay Distortion Eyeshadow Palette ($48.00 for 0.90 oz.) contains five “duotone shadows” designed to “transform” the remaining 10 (regular) eyeshadows housed in a large, plastic palette with a more chromatic exterior. Each eyeshadow was 0.06 oz., so the palette definitely has plenty of product for the money. I had higher expectations–both based on the concept but also based on the brand’s Heavy Metals palette, which was fabulous–but this just didn’t meet them. It left me a little confused and wanting more.

The five transformative shades had a more powdery, slippery texture; they felt powdery, but the powder clumped up, so there wasn’t a lot of dustiness in the pan, just clumpy, uneven application where product dropped in chunks rather than in a dusting of powder. I think if they had more of the shifting shimmer or were more loosely pressed, they would have worked better and gone further in transforming the other eyeshadows in the palette. In general, I do find that loose or cream-based duochrome products tend to work best for layering, though.

To make matters worse, the regular eyeshadows were under-pigmented, harder to apply and blend out, and were underwhelming. The best shades were First Offense and Territorial, but shades like 5.0 (which Urban Decay has done a few times by other names) and Old Smoke were surprisingly sheer. I also noticed that I really had to pack on the transformative shades to get a noticeable shift, and I have large dips in all five shades already.

Bleach (Distortion)

Bleach (Distortion) is a bright, white gold with a cooler, white base and gold-to-green shifting shimmer. It had good color coverage and was fairly blendable. The texture was soft and somewhat powdery but less clumpy and easier to use compared to the other transformative shades. This shade wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.05 oz. - $380.00 Per Ounce

The formula is typically described as "high-pigment" that "stays on your lids" and goes on "seamlessly." Their permanent range has a lot of fantastic shades in it, and many of them are pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. Some of their matte are real workhorse kind of shades with soft, smooth, silky, and blendable textures, while their shimmers and pearly shades are very rich in payoff and apply beautifully to the lid. They wear between seven and nine hours on me, depending on the shade and finish.

Shifty

Shifty is a pinkish-white base with green-to-gold shifting sparkle and pearl. This shade had larger particles in it, so it appeared shinier and more metallic on top of other products. It had semi-opaque color payoff, which wasn’t buildable (even over primer). It had a more powdery consistency that also felt like there was slip there, but instead of making it blendable or easy to apply, it caused the eyeshadow to come away in clumps or to clump up when applied to the lid. The eyesahdow stayed on nicely for seven hours.

Space

Space is a bluish white base with cooler, teal-to-violet shifting pearl. It had semi-opaque coverage that did not build up. The texture felt drier while still having a slip, almost a creaminess, that made it to the powder clumped up, which made it difficult to apply evenly whether I used a dry/dampened brush or fingertips. This shade wore well for seven hours on me before creasing.

Mind Game

Mind Game is a light pink with cooler undertones and pink-to-violet shifting pearl. It had good color coverage in a single layer, but it wasn’t buildable and had a more powdery consistency that had slip and was prone to clumping together as I tried to pick up product with my brush. I tried patting it over products with fingertips, and it actually was worse–the color stuck to my fingertip and did not transfer off. It lasted for seven hours on me.

Blur

Blur is a pale, pinkish white base with pink-to-lavender shifting shimmer. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a powdery, clumpy texture where the base tended to read chalky on the skin and really had to be buffed out to look even and more reflective. This shade swore well for seven hours on me.

First Offense

First Offense is a bright, medium-dark orange with warm, copper undertones and a frosted sheen. It had opaque pigmentation with a smooth, almost cream-like texture that was easy to apply to the lid and blend out. The eyeshadow stayed on well for eight hours on me.

Hot Box

Hot Box is a deep green with subtle, warm undertones and a mix of cooler, emerald green and gold sparkle over a more matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff in a single layer. The texture was drier to the touch, and I found that the sparkles tended to sheer away from the underlying powder, so it tended to look murky and matte on the lid in practice. It could have been easier to work with and to blend out on the l id. It wore well for seven hours on me before fading noticeably.

5.0

5.0 is a medium-dark blue with cool undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was smooth but thin and a little dry, which made application more challenging as the eyeshadow applied unevenly and was harder to diffuse gradually. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, even over primer, and was not buildable. This shade lasted for seven hours on me before creasing.

Rogue

Rogue is a muted, medium purple with warmer, pink undertones and a pearly sheen. The pigmentation was good, though it was not opaque and wasn’t buildable nor did it improve over primer. The texture felt smooth to the touch, but it felt too heavy in silicones to me–slippery and thin–and looked more faded as I applied it. This shade lasted for six and a half hours before creasing on me.

Trash Talk

Trash Talk is a muted, medium-dark lavender with warm, pink undertones and a satin finish. The consistency was smooth but drier and thinner, which made blending take more effort, and the color always appeared more faded applied to the skin than it did in the pan. It had good color payoff that stayed on well for seven hours.

Territorial

Territorial is a medium, golden brown with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had rich pigmentation that applied evenly on the lid. The texture was smooth, soft, and blendable without being too thin or too dense in the pan. This shade wore well for eight hours on me before fading slightly.

Blackout

Blackout is a deep black with a matte finish. It had very nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a smooth, velvety texture that was just a smidgen powdery in the pan but applied evenly to bare skin. The eyeshadow blended out nicely and lasted for eight and a half hours on me. In terms of pairing with the transformative shades in the palette, Blackout always yielded the strongest shifts.

Old Smoke

Old Smoke is a dirty, medium-dark taupe with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, which was a struggle to apply evenly and wasn’t buildable, even when I tried it over primer. The texture was dusty and thin, and it was a struggle to use it in a meaningful way. It lasted for six hours on me from what I could tell.

Shag

Shag is a light-medium, silvery lavender with warmer, pink and gold sparkle. It had semi-sheer color coverage that applied fairly evenly to bare skin, but the texture was more loosely pressed and had a tendency to sheer out and not build up. It was less dupable compared to most shades in the palette, though. The eyeshadow lasted for seven hours on me.

Velvet

Velvet is a medium-dark plum with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had excellent color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin. The consistency was a little drier in the pan and needed a heavier hand to pick up product for even application, though. It wore well for eight hours before fading on me.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Eesh. I fell in love with it on sight alone and I was going to wait to see if it got a B or higher before splurging, but…I guess I’m glad to save my money.

Thank you for the honest review! A C+ is just disappointing enough to convince me to pass.

Darn, I ordered this as soon as it was available to give to my daughter for Christmas. Now I’m not sure if I should give it to her and let her play with it or just return it when it finally arrives.

I saw Leeshaโ€™s review video on this and when they released it on Sephora I couldnโ€™t pull the trigger which is strange because I buy almost all Urbanโ€™s palettes.I just didnโ€™t seem like it had great pigmentation and I was waiting for your review. It is sold out on Sephora but I wonโ€™t be buying this one when they restock everywhere. Its just not doing it for me and they really could have made this special but itโ€™s just not that impressive๐Ÿ˜I love the Heavy Metals palette it is a great one but this is a dud in my opinion. And Iโ€™m a diehard Urban Decay fan.

Wow! I love how you showed all the possible transformations. This must have taken a lot of time/effort. I wish for all your hard work the palette had been better. Thanks for your review!

I was thinking the same thing. Thank you so much Christine! Your review and pictures answered every possible question and saved me money and frustration!

What a shame…this was a swell concept. I really want to admire products, even if there is no intention to purchase. Seems one could get better results layering their colored HLs or light iridescents over their preexisting…read better….shadows.

Never before have I been so thankful that I waited on your formal review of a product! I’m serious! I mean, obviously the concept of this palette is very interesting. But if the quality isn’t there to support the idea, then it just seems very gimicky.

Oh my, Urban Decay has lost the plot when it can’t even get a blue or a taupe right – especially when they have had such stellar shades as Mushroom, Derailed, Evidence and Danger in their palettes of the past.

Thank you so much for the review Christine as it has saved us all from wasting our money on this one.

Honestly, i’ve noticed that their “blues” have been weak for the last several years and palettes, starting with the “Through the Looking Glass” palette. All of their blues are dry, chalky, sometimes streaky and never as opaque as the images would have you believe. Sadly, I’ve given up on UD shadows for the most part. i was hoping this would revive my interest.

I don’t think I’d ever get any use out of this palette, but I actually do think it’s a very neat concept! If you were really creative, it could be a good palette for you!

Iโ€™m so disappointed as I love this concept and was definitely going to buy . I will wait for someone to do this same concept better . Too bad, Iโ€™m a UD fan from way back when. The bright side is Iโ€™ll save all the time spent playing around with all the variations of this . Thanks for all the work on this review .

I finally got my UD Metal palette and haven’t really played with it but I think I am going to be very happy with it. It swatched on my arm so beautifully. I wasn’t planning on picking this up because I went a little ham on Dior, Pat McGrath, Tom Ford and Chanel so figured there was no way to afford this but now glad that I didn’t. I don’t feel bad that I didn’t get it which is nice anyway!

I was interested in this palette. Not so much anymore. The transformations are fairly underwhelming. I can already get some similar effects using existing sheer/ shifty shades like Roadstripe, Asphixia, Acid Rain, Omen, etc.

Wow!! Thank you so much for putting so much work into this review, Christine!! You always do such excellent and thorough work. We appreciate it so much.

What a disappointment! I haven’t been into any of Urban Decay’s releases this year other than Heat, and I still haven’t purchased it, when I saw the promo for this I thought finally something I could get back on board with! Too bad, this could’ve been a great palette, for gifting or keeping, and the trendy shifty shades make it *cool*. Even the recent Heavy Metals seem lackluster to me compared to Urban Decay’s quality from x years ago, everytime they release something I’m always so hopeful its back to their older formulas but every time I just get disappointed. Ho hum.

Iโ€™m stunned, this palette is totally in UD wheelhouse and they botched it. Maybe KVD will add shades from Alchemist to the next metal matte palette she releases.

You r eye looks are absolutely beautiful, you are so skilled as well as talented! The colours you put togethrr are breathtaking.
Pity the quality is not there tho’! Otherwise I would get that for my daughter.

Been watching your reviews of products for awhile now and I am impressed by the great job you do. This was on my Christmas list. Taking it off as even though it wouldn’t be my money spent, I can add something else of better quality. Thank you for the lump of coal I just dodged Christine! ๐Ÿ™‚

Very poor choice for them to release this without it being totally stellar. Yes, years ago your best bet for finding duos and transformers was to go indie (and indie loose brands still have some of the world’s best, like Fyrinnae) and loose or cream. Now transformer shades are everywhere from tons of indies and pro brands like MUFE, KVD, Smashbox, and even drugstore options. Unless this could offer just as amazing and effective transformers as the other brands mentioned plus a nice colorful palette it’s not worth it. Just pick your transformer shades or sets of choice (not like UD reinvented them and made new awesome ones. It’s pretty same-old) and your favorite colorful shades or palette and bam: you have countless looks for less cost and better impact.

That said, you did stellar reviewing this and spending so much time on each transformation.

This always seemed very gimmicky to me. Idk, I just feel like you could take a duochrome shadow and pat it over another shadow and get the same effect. I think I’ll try it with my Sephora Pro Editorial palette. That one has about 4 or 5 nice duochrome shades in it.

Your work ethic is just incredible! I think I partly log on to get inspired by it. This was a cool concept and will surely sell a lot of palettes, but definitely not one I would reach to more than a couple of times. I do continue to enjoy the Alchemist palette though — I like that it’s just the transformers, and you can really see the layering.

Used my $15 Off VIB coupon to order Heavy Metals yesterday (ok, & UD Vice Rebel ๐Ÿ˜Š) instead of this one- – happy to see I made the right choice! โ˜บ

I was so sorry to read this. I really like mine! Maybe the primer makes the difference, but I’m finding most of the shades pigmented and all are really easy to blend out. I’m not experiencing any clumping with the transforming shades.

I did find Shag really sheer and Hot Box somewhat so. I foil them, though, and they look stunning.

I don’t understand why as I hunt for a duo chrome palette I keep coming back to this one, but the reviews are so mixed. Christine has been pretty much right rating wise for my last purchases and since don’t think it will be on sale in Sephora France anytime soon (I haven’t even seen it yet) I really appreciate some advice on finding another duo chrome palette. Thanks in advance.

Oh thanks much! I’ve seen them mentioned a bit, but haven’t tried. I have few Make up Geek duo chromes, but didn’t find them as glowing nor transitioning as I’d like. Something similar that I think looks great is palette by Kat Von D, sort of holographic shadows to lay on top of other shadows, but I’m still boycotting her brand. So, I’ll give Frynnaie a try!

Hi Christine!

Thanks for doing such a thorough review on this palette- the layered swatches were especially useful.

I just wanted to say that despite the less than stellar review, I LOVE the look you did with the purples and blues. Would you be able to elaborate on which shades you used and how you applied?

I was gifted the palette and am trying to find ways to make the most of it.

I’ve seen many bad reviews on this palette, but I use UD anti-aging primer potion (as I always do with any eyeshadow) and they blend and perform beautifully on my skin… I really enjoy this palette! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ And thanks for posting the transforming shades on each color!

Interestingly, I really love this palette. I bought it a few months ago after swatching some of the shades in Sephora. The consistency of the shadows seems to be the same as my Electric palette. Which is to say, they’re hard, not soft and buttery like many of UD’s single shadows. They have good staying power for me and I think 5.0/Space is my favorite blue shadow look now. I agree that the duochromes aren’t as good at layering as the loose ones from Fyrinnae, for example, but I still think they’re gorgeous.
