The Best Lipsticks for Your Holiday Wish List (2015 Edition)

The Best Lipsticks for Your Holiday Wish List (2015 Edition)

Old favorites, a few new favorites — here are my favorite formulas (overall) when it comes to lipstick. If you’re looking for a new formula to try, or if you know someone who’s been eager to try one, hopefully this helps you!

1. Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain Lip Color ($55.00) | This continues to be my all-time, holy grail lipstick formula. It’s the formula I reach for most often when I have a “free” day or to take with me when I’m out of town. The finish is luminous with fine pearl that I have trouble finding in other brands. Long-wearing, pigmented, hydrating–the only thing that is hard to love is the price point!

Where to Buy:  Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks

2. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick ($22.00) | If you’re looking for rich color payoff, a creamy and comfortable formula, with good longevity and a good range of shades, this is a winner. Some of my favorites are shades like Anarchy, Fiend, Liar, Rapture, and Strip.

Where to Buy:

3. Givenchy Le Rouge ($36.00) | The consistency of the formula is creamy and so very smooth; it glides on effortlessly and sits really well on the lips while having good wear time and pigmentation. My favorites are their corals, like Corail Decollete.

Where to Buy:  Sephora

4. Too Faced Melted Liquified Lipstick ($21.00) | If you like the idea of a liquid lipstick but have wanted a glossier finish, these might fit the bill! They’re comfortable to wear with really rich color payoff (in almost all cases) and wear well. One of my favorites is Melted Violet.

Where to Buy:  SephoraULTA

5. Too Faced La Creme ($22.00) | This formula is soft, creamy, and “melts” against the lips, which gives lips a really smooth, glossy appearance. Coral Fire and Jelly Bean are two of my favorites.

Where to Buy:  SephoraULTA

6. BUXOM Full-Bodied Lipstick ($21.00) | It’s one of the more underrated lipstick formulas, I think! The range has some variety, though more neutral than crazy neons, and has a great, creamy texture that applies well and wears longer. I love shades like Dolly and Hooligan for neutrals.

Where to Buy:  Sephora

7. Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick ($24.00) | Bite may have been trying to push their higher-end, luxury formula, but I still think their Luminous Creme formula beats it with ease! Creamy, rich color that hydrates, feels good to wear, and lasts well. Love shades like Violet.

Where to Buy:  Sephora

8. Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00) | Like others, I was skeptical of a more expensive lipstick formula by Estee Lauder, but it’s really, really good. If you like your finish to lean on the side of natural to luminous, this is a formula worth checking out. Soft, creamy color paired with light shine, hydration, and good wear. It’s hard to pick favorites, but here are a few that come to mind: Confident, Defiant Coral, Discreet, Eccentric, and Intense Nude.

Where to Buy:  Nordstrom, Sephora, Bloomingdale’s,

9. Bobbi Brown Luxe Lip Color ($35.00) | Another formula that had me wary at first but really won me over. It’s an extremely hydrating formula that gives lips a smoother appearance while worn, and the shade range is pretty fantastic (it’s huge!). I’ve been loving shades like Plum Brandy, Pink Buff, Soft Berry, and Neutral Rose.

Where to Buy:  Nordstrom, Sephora, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’sNeiman Marcus

10. Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color ($7.49) | You really don’t have to splash out a ton of money to get a good lipstick. Maybelline’s Vivids line is fantastic for bright, bold shades that wear well, are comfortable to wear, and have intense color payoff. All shades in the line are well worth a look!

Where to BuyULTA

11. NARS Audacious Lipstick ($32.00) | This is a good formula for anyone looking for creamy, satiny color. The shade range covers a lot of ground, and you’ll find the finish varies from satin to luminous, but they tend to wear more as satins after a couple of hours, even if they started out glossier. The formula is very pigmented and comfortable to wear, though not hydrating for me. I love shades like Juliette and Anna.

Where to Buy:  Nordstrom, SephoraNeiman Marcus, Saks

12. Urban Decay Matte Revolution ($22.00) | A new personal favorite for when I want a matte lip that’s comfortable to wear but still pretty matte. It’s not a flat matte finish, like you’d see with a liquid lipstick, but it is fairly matte. They have good coverage and wear nicely. I love shades like 1993, After Dark, and Backtalk.

Where to Buy:

13. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick ($20.00) | If there was one liquid lipstick formula I’d wear without a fuss, it would be Kat Von D’s. It still is the best formula I’ve tried in this category, as it is the least drying, best-applying, and most shades wear really long and well.

Where to BuySephora

14. Maybelline ColorSensational Creamy Matte Lip Color ($7.99) | Maybelline, once again, will keep your wallet from running away in fear–their newest Matte range is superb. They’re long-wearing, comfortable to wear, and pretty matte without being totally flat. Shades like All Fired Up and Touch of Spice are great.

Bite and NARS are the only ones I’ve tried extensively out of this line up. I find myself liking the Clinique Pop Lips fairly well, but the testers never seem to apply color true on me. I may not be putting on enough since I use the doe foot tester. I’ve tested a Marc Jacobs I like too. I’ve test Rouge G but never plucked down the $$$ for one. I love them, though. I tend to like Chanel lippies too!

Urban Decay is on my radar to try next. Of course I also need more Bite and NARS!

My Sephora doesn’t have Givenchy otherwise I’d be swatching like crazy in store. They just came out with Sophia Loren’s color that I really wanted and Sephora had it online for a day and then sold out. 🙁 Last checked Nordstrom had it but it’s on back order until the end of November.

I love the NARS Audacious formula! I’ve gotten quite a few lately because I just love the finish and the wear time, especially if I put a primer on underneath. Thank you for the recommendations – I plan to check out UD revolution, Bite and Buxom at Sephora on my next trip and then load up my cart for the sale!

I bet not all Sephoras actually have Givenchy in-store. Sephora’s starting to carry SO many brands that a lot is becoming online-only or at certain stores.

These lists are so helpful thanks!
Givenchy Le Rouge is still my favourite for formula + colour range, but I was really surprised at how much I loved the Estee Lauder Pure Envy. Though I was disappointed that somehow none of the MLBB colours were that flattering on me (wearable, but not amazing). I loved the formula enough that I’m probably going to pick up Intense Nude or Rebellious Rose anyway though.
How similar are the Pure Envy Shine lipsticks in formula and how they sit on the lips?

Let’s hope that 2016 brings you a Pure Envy neutral that works for you beautifully! 🙂

I think the Pure Envy Shine is a little tackier/thicker in a way – they need to “melt” more as you apply to glide on as easily as the regular line-up. They wear pretty well, though!

I noticed Sephora doesn’t have the shade of Le Rouge you mentioned and Nordstrom doesn’t seem to carry it?! Any other shades you suggest in this formula for a starter shade. I do love that Corail. I’m wondering why they don’t have it! Ugh.
Also, I think you meant Plum Brandy for the BB Luxe. It says Plum Dady.

I’m thinking possibly for their was a rush that hasn’t been restocked from summer. Neiman’s has it listed. But, when I click to put it in the cart it doesn’t actually go in. But, other shades do. I hope it comes back! I

I found it on Sephora! My phone may have not been loading the second screen because the shades scroll horizontally istead of stacked as usual. I stand corrected. Either that, or they added some more shades today!:)

While I haven’t tried every formula listed here, I have tried quite a few and have really loved them! Even ones where I tried them on in-store just for the day to see how I liked it on me, like Nars Anna, felt quite good on. I almost bought it, too, until it dawned on me that I already have a nice dupe. Loving the UD Revolution lipstick, regular and matte, TF La Creme, Maybelline Color Sensational line, and from that Bite sample, that formula as well!

Oh, yesterday I tried on MAC Evening Rendezvous, beautiful shade, but after 3-ish hours, my lips felt so painfully dry! I could tell they were peeling underneath, that’s why on impulse I bought Jack Black lip balm! ?

On the upside, Jack Black Intensive lip balm is EVERYTHING that you said it was! Seriously, in just one night, it repaired my lips considerably.

I think I’m ready for my first guerlain. I did buy some for my mum but I’ve been scared to try them because I have bad dark circles and anything shiny or glossy brings them out even from under concealer. But I tried a sparkly tarte lipstick today and eh… I looked fine. Not all shine is evil.

So I’m currently going through your swatches and about to spend a ton of money…. Wah!

What a great range of lipsticks you have produced Christine – there is something here for everyone. From high end lipsticks to budget ones. What Guerlain misses in its eyeshadows lately, it makes up in its lipsticks.

It’s actually not the price point that makes me hesitant to buy more shades of Rouge G. It’s the packaging, more specifically it not being re-usable. It’s just so wasteful!

Now this is what you call a perfect balance of lipsticks in one place 🙂
Apart from Bobbi Brown luxe and Maybelline Creamy matte I have tried all and seriously hats off to you for penning down the best shades 😀 😀
I may pick a shade or two of bobbi brown luxe this week .. wish to see the TOP 10 of 2015 list ASAP … am seriously obsessed with the list and keeps a bookmark whole year 😀

Nice list, Christine! You can never go wrong with Kat Von D 🙂 Marc Jacobs has an awesome gift set for lippies this year, and the Bite Beauty rewind set is also a great deal. I really love MAC D for Danger at the moment.

The Givenchy lipsticks are my favourite bullet-style lipsticks, followed closely by the Nars Audacious. The Givenchy just feel so luxurious on my lips!! Usually I wear mostly liquid lipsticks but whenever I wanna feel super fancy I bust out my Givenchy!!

Can’t tell u how much your holiday round up has meant to helping me wade through the increased amount of offerings in cosmetics. I enjoy the diversity you note and such thorough reviews on the points of why a product stands out. I can’t fathom the work it takes to continue produce content so good and so regularly. But without fail your blog remains the benchmark others should emulate. Now im happily heading to place yet another order for more goodies! Happy holidays !

Bobbi brown luxe lip and Estee lauder envy shine are also my favorite formulas. They may seem to emphasize on skin imperfections when swatched on hand, but they are divine on lips! And weird that BB luxe lip is actually less expensive than EL envy shine here in Singapore lol.

Anw, gotta that I can never go on to buy any lip product without checking our your blog Christine (though sadly some products are not here). Much love ~
