Sydney Grace Tiny Marvels Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Tiny Marvels
Sydney Grace Tiny Marvels Eyeshadow Palette ($52.00 for 0.95 oz.) includes eight matte eyeshadows and seven shimmer eyeshadows. All of the eyeshadows had semi-opaque to opaque coverage and lasted between eight to nine hours with the majority of shades being very easy to use. The one shade that was as blendable as it could have been was Jewel Bee, but it wasn’t difficult to work with by any means. I found the performance to be consistent with the brand’s matte/shimmer formulas overall.
I had a few readers request some help on figuring out color combinations, so I tried to rearrange the palette here and here (view them vertically since we don’t have the width to display five shades horizontally!). I tried to arrange them in a way that made sense vertically (as a group of five) and horizontally (as a group of three).
After using the two more contrasting shades specifically for looks (Jewel Bee and Mantis), it was a bit harder to incorporate them than I anticipated. I think that some of the cooler-toned shades, like Jewel Bee, and Mantis (which runs cooler-toned than most of the shades one might normally pair with green, like Death Moth, Walkin’ Stick, and Treehopper) are easiest to work with as 2-3 shade looks or might need an additional shade or two pulled from one’s stash. I will try to come up with some combos and share them in a separate post!

Web
Web is a bright, warmer white with a smooth, metallic finish. It was slightly more frosted in appearance on my skin compared to most of the shimmery shades in the palette. The texture was soft and smooth to the touch, but it was slightly thinner and more firmly-pressed compared to the other shades in the palette. It had opaque color coverage that stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

The shimmer eyeshadows are more consistent in pigmentation with the majority of shades having opaque color coverage. The more metallic/sparkly the shade is, the creamier and more emollient the eyeshadow felt in the pan, which often yielded really smooth application and good adherence to the lid, though a few worked better with a fingertip or a dampened brush for true-to-pan color or to get a truer finish/sheen.
Most shades, however, worked well with brushes, and I didn't have trouble applying or blending out most of the shimmer shades. The more satin to pearl like finishes tend to feel a little thinner but blend out well. These shades wore between eight and nine hours on me with some of the more foiled-like shades creasing noticeably at the end (and the less foiled-like ones fading).

Treehopper
Treehopper is a medium, yellowy peach with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. The color payoff was fantastic with full opacity achieved in one layer. The texture was smooth, velvety, and blendable without being too powdery nor too firmly pressed into the pan. It lasted well for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably.

The matte eyeshadows tend to be pigmented (typically semi-opaque or opaque, often buildable if they aren't opaque) with a soft, more velvety texture that has slight slip but isn't so thick that it gets difficult to use, applies unevenly, or has a lot of fallout. I've found that most of the matte eyeshadows apply and blend out without much effort but a few may take a bit more effort to diffuse along the edges. The matte formula tends to wear between eight and eight and a half hours on me.

Walkin' Stick
Walkin’ Stick is a light-medium, olive green with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation that adhered well to bare skin as the color went on evenly, true-to-color, and blended out with little effort. The texture was soft, smooth, and lightly powdery in the pan but not prone to fallout or sheering out too readily on the lid. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before showing signs of fading.

Scarab
Scarab has a rich, warm reddish-brown base with green-to-teal shifting shimmer that gave it a metallic finish. I’m not entirely sure if it’s like the brand’s existing Red Chameleon or it IS exactly the same with a new name, but regardless, it’s very, very close, though I felt like this version was smoother with less slip (in a good way), so it went on more evenly and had fully opaque coverage in one layer. It lasted nicely for eight and a half hours on me before fading visibly.

Mantis
Mantis is a brighter, lime green with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented with a soft, lightly powdery consistency that ensured it was blendable but wasn’t to the point where it became prone to fallout. It had a more noticeable white base, though, and I noticed that I had to be careful when putting it next to deeper shades, like Spyder, as it could turn them a bit grayish. There were signs of fading after eight hours of wear.

Luv Bug
Luv Bug is a muted, medium-dark mauve with cooler undertones and a mostly matte finish. The consistency was soft, blendable with light powderiness in the pan. It had good color payoff in a single layer, though it needed to be built up just slightly for full coverage (or applied over primer).

Jewel Bee
Jewel Bee is a medium lavender with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable color coverage that adhered well to bare skin and blended out fairly well. It was easier to use than a lot of pastel-leaning shades like it–not so powdery nor was it prone to sheering out–but it wasn’t quite as blendable as the majority of the brand’s matte shades. This shade wore nicely for eight hours before showing signs of fading.

Death Moth is a medium, olive-brown with warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a smooth, almost creamy texture that was easy to pick up and blend out–it felt more finely-milled and velvety compared to most of the brand’s matte eyeshadows. The eyeshadow applied evenly and wasn’t prone to sheering out too readily. It lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

Spyder
Spyder is a deep, blackened taupe with cool undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was soft, smooth, and a bit firmer compared to other shades in the brand’s matte formula. It had more buildable coverage from semi-opaque to opaque, which should make it easier to work with. I found the eyeshadow to be blendable and easy to work with as it wasn’t prone to fallout. There were signs of fading present after eight and a half hours of wear.

I so have my alarm set for this one – looks beautiful!
Glad this palette is consistent with other SG offerings! I bet it will sell out very quickly.
One thing I like is that this is not an ‘obvious fall palette, issuing in August.’ This palette will be useful year ‘round, with neutrals and various colors that fit each season. Not often do you see spring and fall looks in the same palette, but there you have it! I can’t believe you got the review up, Christine, in time for your readers to sharpen their debit cards and set their alarms. As usual, you’re the best.
Do I already have dupes for the majority of the shades? Yes. But do I still feel the bug in my butt to get it? Absolutely YES!
I do worry about this being a LE palette that I fear will sell out within hours, and unfortunately for me, I found out about this very special palette after I had already stocked up on essentials for me and my cats. So I probably won’t be able to buy it. There is still the one by ColourPop…it seems to have a somewhat similar color story going on. Unfortunately, it is NOT made by my favorite YT’er, though. I really wanted to support one of the most drama free, most beloved people in the beauty community.
Eager to get this one. To my eyes, I see trios if you look at the palette as columns, with two columns together creating a six pan combo. But I appreciate the effort you put into rearranging the entire palette! So often, I go into a palette with one approach but do something completely different in application.
Well now that you said that you look at it as trios, the palette makes so much more sense to me and now I want it! I wish it wasn’t $52 =(
I hope I can get this. The color story is slightly funky, and I’m here for it.
Ok, so first ColourPop did cactus and succulent themed palettes, and now Sydney Grace is doing an insect themed palette? I didn’t realize 2020 was “Market Directly to AJ Year”, but I hope this means an all-green Pat McGrath palette is soon to follow.
Sadly, as cute as this palette is I’m not sure I can currently justify $52 on a palette when I’m wearing makeup maaaaaybe once a month.
I’m glad the quality is there for those who want this, but as a person who loves color, I still do not understand this palette.
I really don’t either. And as the creator is my favorite YouTuber I’m actually quite disappointed in it. From her own words of always too many golds in a palette I see way too many gold in this palette. It doesn’t speak to me on any level. It looks like BH cosmetics tripping in saint Tropez. Very close even though that palette has a terrible formula and I already dumped it. It’s too bad cuz I love the creator as I said. I agree it makes no sense to me. Sadly.
Well, I haven’t worked with it myself but as someone who used to paint, at a glance, I see it as a palette making complementary colors work to contrast each other for vividness – I think it was called “color – blocking” a few years back. Anything reddish/coralish complements the greenish, anything yellowish (or goldish) contrasts the purplish-plummyish. If you layer complements on top of each other, you neutralize both colors and there are accompanying neutrals to help with blending that out or transitioning. I believe Mel Thompson was an artist before she began playing around with makeup so this palette make sense to me in that aspect.
Sydney Grace did mention on Instagram that they are making this semi permanent. They will restock when it sells out.
I did watch the YouTube videos from the collaboration with Michele Wang, Kinky Sweat, Kelsee Briana Jai, Lisa J and Glam Girl Chelsea. I believe it was Lisa J who incorporated the green as a liner. One of the other lovely ladies incorporated the lavender. It looks scary in pictures due to both the green and lavender but those lovely ladies made it work. Christine did a lovely look as well.
This looks like an amazing palette for sure!
That is a relief to hear! I was torn bc I can’t justify spending that much on a palette right now and would rather wait for a deal.
Oh cool, thanks for the update, Stephanie! I can breathe now.
Mel said Scarab is Red Chameleon in her video about this. It looks great, I hope it doesn’t sell out before I can order it!
I watched the video and was a bit confused if it was exactly the same or in the same vein!
I initially wasn’t drawn to this because I didn’t think I liked the color scheme, but now I realize that it’s just the shade mantis that I’m not drawn to. If I cover it up, I love all the other shades. I’m on a no buy for a few more weeks though.
This is certainly colourful and different. I love some of the shades, but I’m half in half out. There is half of the palette I know I would definitely not wear b/c it leans too heavily into yellow/olive territory which truns me so sallow. I appreciate the uniqueness, but I am very torn. Good luck to everyone and hope you snag it.
I want Bug-a-Boo and Luv Bug as singles!
I’m so glad and not surprised to see an A rating. I’m definitely picking this up tomorrow. Both eye looks are gorgeous Christine ?
I love Sydney Grace shadows and am happy for Mel but this color story, regardless of how it’s arranged, is not for me.
To me, it looks like a fairly random palette of various shades thrown together. There does not seem to be a cohesive colour story going on here, judging by your need Christine to re-arrange the shades so that they make sense. Walking Stick and Death Moth seem to be fairly similar and I’m not sure how Mantis and Spyder quite fit in.
The standout shades for me are Fire Butt – a gorgeous green and Marvel – a stunning rosey bronze that I hope will be released as a single.
Thank you once again for reviewing this palette so quickly Christine – you are indeed a marvel!
I’d love to see Fire Butts and Marvel sold as singles, too, Genevieve! Plus, Meadowhawk, too!
I’m having trouble putting eye looks together in my mind. Looking forward to the eye looks that Christine will be posting. Thanks for the ones that you already did in this post. Not sure why but I am really struggling with the cohesiveness of this palette.
Here you go! https://www.temptalia.com/12-ways-to-wear-sydney-grace-tiny-marvels/
Thank you!!!
I think Mel did a great job on this. It’s interesting, but still usable and I think she filled some holes that SG was missing. And that greeny gold color reminds me of one of my favorite discontinued shadows from SG called unforgettable that I’ve found so useful since I got it. It feels like it’s got a little something for everybody in terms of warm and cool. I can’t afford to get this right now, but as soon as I can I’m going to nab it.
Great to see how well this palette performed!
There are several colours here that really appeal to me (web, Fire-Butts, Meadowhawk, Treehopper, Luv Bug, Flutterby) and I don’t have dupes for.
Others, despite their quality (Jewel Bee, Bee Bee, Mantis, Spyder, Walkin’ Stick), I doubt I’d never use.
Glad I’m still in a no-buy on palettes, or this might have piqued my interest more.
I always look for the packaging pictures, to find out where products are manufactured. But this post has the ingredients picture twice?
They are different photos – one is of the back of the physical palette, one is the back of the carton it came in.
Oh! So no mention on the packaging about where it’s made?
I already recycled the box, so whatever is photographed is what I saw!
Hi Denise,
On Sydney Grace’s website they state that all their products are formulated, produced, packaged and shipped from Northern California.
I can’t decide if I want this or not. I love Sydney Grace and Mel but I find the colour story confused. I like almost all the shades except Mantis – I love greens but not pastels and not ones of that particular undertone. To me it stands out in the palette in a bad way, to a certain extent Jewel Bee does that too. I’m on the fence – I think I might wait a bit and see what I plan to buy at Sephora and the new Pat McGrath launch.
From what I understand, as long as it is wanted, they will restock, so you have time to think about it!
Christine, do you feel like Walkin Stick and Deathmoth are too similar? Is the difference between those shades apparent on the eye?
They’re not dupes of each other! One is lighter and greener, the other is darker and yellower.
I’m into this palette but I feel there was a missed opportunity for a dark, dirty green. I’m actually suprised at the lack of green given theme. I would trade out one of the double browns or double pink/mauves for a green, shimmer or matte!
I bought this palette because I love the green color, Mantis. It turns out I love all of the colors in this one, which is rare for me. I was bummed because Bug-A-Boo was cracked when the palette arrived and I had to repair it. The palette sold out just minutes after I bought it so I knew I wasn’t getting another one. I find that most of the colors in this palette work together quite nicely. Everything is pretty warm to neutral except the lavender and the green shades. You can even use those two shades together and add some sparkle and you’re good. Someone said there are a lot of golds in this palette but I don’t find these shades repetitive at all and appreciate the different metallics. I’ve tried all kinds of combinations with the colors in this palette and though most of them would not be work-appropriate, that’s not really what this palette is for. This is the eyeshadow I wear when I’m not at work. I absolutely love the sparkle and the quality is amazing. It is well worth the almost $60 I paid. This palette is on par with my ABH, Pat McGrath, and Natasha Denona palettes and I’ve been using it constantly since I bought it. Sydney Grace eyeshadow is awesome. I see this palette is now on pre-order for a re-stock. It’s totally worth it if you love sparkles. If you don’t love sparkles or that green scares you, steer clear.
I really like both Sydney Grace and Mel Thompson (as concerns her YT channel) and their taste, but this seems such the odd ball palette color story wise. Now Mel almost always sports a look I like so this would probably work for me, but somehow it just doesn’t call out to me. Hope I miss out. I’m going to see how much I can dupe this and may just do some of the looks you created on the subsequent 12 look post using this palette. Thank you Christine!
