Melt Cosmetics Impulsive Pressed Pigment Palette Review & Swatches
Impulsive
Melt Cosmetics Impulsive 18-Pan Pressed Pigment Palette ($65.00 for 0.714 oz.) is a new palette that features 18 shades across mattes and shimmers housed in a palette that opens up like a book with each trio of eyeshadows in tiers. The palette had a lot of weight to it–more than anticipated but also much more than most palettes on the market–and the tiered nature of the trios made the palette thicker, too, so it ended up being bulky.
There are seven mattes and the rest are shimmers (and more metallic/sparkly ones at that), so it may not work for everyone’s preferences. I did find that the majority of the mattes were rather warm-toned, so I didn’t feel like I had all the shades I “wanted” to pair with some of those cooler-toned shimmers on the right side of the palette. The quality of most shades was good; pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing, but there were a few where fallout was more of a concern, needed to be applied with a wet brush, or mattes that took a bit of extra effort to blend out.
Sephora doesn’t list the palette as limited edition, but when I tried to find out whether it was permanent or limited edition through Melt’s Instagram, I wasn’t seeing language in either direction, so if you’ve seen something said specifically otherwise, please let me know! I saw some people ask but didn’t see any replies by the brand. It has the look of what you’d think is more likely to be limited edition, and their larger palettes with this pan shape have been limited edition in the past.

2012
2012 is a bright, rich marigold with a matte finish–it felt like a true mix of yellow and orange that was closer to orange (because of depth) but was very, very warm-toned relative to more red-toned oranges (which are most of them). The consistency was soft, velvety, and denser–a bit “thicker” of a matte–and very pigmented but a little powdery. It worked better of drier textures, e.g. tacky primers could result in the product adhering too strongly in some places or darkening slightly, which I find to be true of denser/thicker mattes in general. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Rule Breaker
Rule Breaker is a rich copper with warm, red undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly to bare skin. The consistency was soft, a little powdery in the pan, but it remained blendable and easy to use on my eye. It lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before showing signs of fading.

Go Getter
Go Getter is a bright, coral-red with warm undertones and flecks of pink and gold micro-sparkle. The texture was slightly firmer, stiffer in the pan, so it took a heavier hand to pick up product evenly with my brush. It had opaque pigmentation when pressed and patted onto my skin. It stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours but did not leave a stain behind, despite being the one shade listed as “not approved by the FDA and Melt Cosmetics for use on the eyes.”

Dream Big
Dream Big is a deep, coppery-red with warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly powdery consistency that was denser and more substantial, so a little went a long way. It applied evenly to bare skin but took a little extra effort to diffuse the edges (almost “too” pigmented in that way). It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before I noticed any fading.

CEO
CEO is a medium-dark bronze with warm undertones and a lightly sparkling, metallic finish. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy consistency that was dense and thick without being too far in either direction. This shade lasted well for eight and a half hours on me before creasing faintly.

Profesh
Profesh is a medium green with muted, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had rich color payoff in a single pass, which applied well to bare skin without sheering out too readily, but it did have a tendency to stick more strongly to my skin, which made it harder to diffuse out the edge for a seamless blend. It lasted well for eight and a half hours before fading visibly on me.

Warehouse Party
Warehouse Party is a muted, medium copper with warm, reddish undertones and flecks of gold sparkle over a metallic finish. The eyeshadow had rich color payoff that applied well to bare skin, though there was slight fallout if I wasn’t careful to tap off the excess. The texture was soft, more loosely pressed, but it was blendable and went on smoothly. It lasted well for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Poppin' Bottles
Poppin’ Bottles is a light-medium gold with strong, warm orange undertones and green-to-gold shifting shimmer. It had nearly opaque color coverage in a single layer, which adhered well to bare skin. The texture was smooth, soft, and blendable without being too firmly nor too softly pressed in the pan. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before showing signs of fading.

Shots
Shots is a light lavender with subtle, warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable color payoff that applied evenly to bare skin but sheered out a touch when I tried to blend and spread it out. The consistency was soft, lightly powdery, but it felt finely-milled to the touch. It wore well for eight hours on me before I noticed slight fading.

Tipsy
Tipsy is a rich, inky blue with cool undertones and a metallic finish. It had rich color coverage that applied well to bare skin with a smooth, even lay down of color. The texture was creamy, dense, and thicker, but it wasn’t to the point where it became stiff, so I had no trouble picking it up with a brush and getting it to adhere to my lid. It lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before creasing slightly.

Cross Faded
Cross Faded is a bright, purplish-blue with strong, cool undertones and a metallic sheen. The texture was creamy, dense, and a bit emollient, which seemed to work better with fingertips or a flat, synthetic brush over fluffier brushes due to the creamier consistency. It had rich pigmentation that stayed on nicely eight and a half hours on me before creasing a bit.

No Regrets
No Regrets is a light-medium, golden pewter with cooler, greenish tones and a glittery finish. The consistency felt glittery–not quite smooth, more textured–and had light fallout during application as a result. I’d recommend using this with a wet brush or a fingertip to maximize coverage and evenness in application while minimizing fallout. It wore well for eight hours with light fallout over time.

As much as I love so many of the shades, I just don’t know. Bulky palettes (plus a brand-new favorite) like this stay up top on my dresser’s makeshift vanity area upright like books. But, I’m running out of free space!
The good news? These pans are magnetized! So, one could conceivably put all the pans in an empty customizable palette. And, if permanent, I just may go that route.
That’d be cool if they aren’t also glued down. My last depotting session ended up with destroyed makeup!
So they are magnetized but also glued down?
I don’t know about these but the ones I’ve tried to work with were magnetized and glued down.
That’s a great suggestion! In fact, I would divide the palette in half and put the warms with complementary singles and the same with the cools. Seeing it all together bothers me.
I was on the fence about this palette but since it got a good rating I’m buying it! I get along good with Melt’s shadows and I like the variety of colors this palette offers. Seems more suitable for Fall/Winter though. Love the eye looks you created with this palette!
Is there any kind of protector to keep the shadows from touching each other? I can for see this getting messy very quickly.
I think there were plastic sheets, but those are first to go when I open up a palette so I might be remembering wrong!
Not surprisingly, I really like the right hand side and dislike the left hand side, but for CEO. And I’ve got dupes for most of the shades I like so will probably pass on this. Also, I’m sure I’m not the only one who is – once again – going to object to some of the names. Drunkeness and its effects – on the drinker or those around him or her – are not cute. And, yes, it’s only makeup and yes, they are only words but I think words are important.
Christine – a question re the packaging/design….the “effect” surrounding most of the shades seem to be powdery/crushed representations of the actual shadows, except for the 2 green shades and Boss Lady. Is there any rhyme or reason for this, so far as you can figure out?
In the photo of half the palette, the green shades do show some powderiness/crushed eyeshadow, but Boss Lady is pretty dark so I think any texture gets lost in the photo.
I am agreeing with you Mariella, I like the right hand side the best and definitely not the left hand side mattes. I, too object to a couple of the names as well, for all the same reasons that you have written.
When this palette is folded up in its closed book form are the pans on one side directly over the pans on the other-with no protection?
When this palette is folded up in its closed book form are the pans on one side directly over the pans on the other-with no protection?
Never mind, I saw your answer to this same question. (For some reason the other comments didn’t load right away. I thought it odd that I was first, but I am not usually this early!)
I think it came with some plastic sheets, but I always disregard those immediately, so I’m not 100% sure if I’m remembering correctly.
I was so happy when this arrived. I remember the posts about the packaging, mainly the photos above the individual colors. What stunned my about the packaging was how thery are stair-stepped. I generally don’t put a whole lot of weight if any in packaging but this one is really unique! I’ve only done one lool so far, but I’m here to tell you, these are some beautiful eyeshadows.
I’m on the fence. I love the looks of the shadows, even though the two sides don’t coordinate. I loathe the packaging. I would have to depot if I got this.
The packaging really isn’t all that bad. It’s approximately the size of 2 UD Naked or ABH palettes stacked on top of each other.
That isn’t too awful. Do you find the shadows get fall out on them from being stacked? Thanks for the info, Amy.
According to SAs at two different Sephora stores, this palette, along with Gemini & Twenty-Seven, will be permanent. However, given my experience with the brand, restocks may take some time, but if one is willing to wait in order to make a decision on this one, it should be available at some point.
That’s good news. That gives me some time to check it out in-store. Thanks again for your information about the palette.
Profesh and Poppin Bottles ended up being hidden gems for me in this impulse purchase. The rest of the shades are good quality, per your review, but I’m at a loss as to how to shape looks from this one.
While I initially railed on the packaging – and still think at its core it’s very ugly – I like the “heft” of it, while hating the useless “bulk.” If that makes sense. Though it’s just a matter of time before losing the plastic inserts, I really wish they’d at least figured out how to make one piece instead of three.
I think this will be my first Melt eyeshadow/pigment palette! These colors are gorgeous. You gave all the pigments no lower than a B. I will definitely play with these colors now, but for Fall, this colors will be Perfect! A little different and I like that.
I just purchased this palette at Sephora and can’t wait to try out different looks with it! I wish the warmer side of the palette had more shimmer shades than matte, but the pigmentation looks really substantial! My one concern is the disclaimer about the shade Go Getter. Christine, you had no issues with this shade after applying and wearing?
No, but I’m not sensitive to the pigments that brands use there so just because I’m good doesn’t mean you will be! If you’ve ever been sensitive to red/purple eyeshadows, you may want to patch test.
I have a funny feeling that bulky, huge palettes such as this one are not as popular as they use to be a few years ago. There are way too many shades here to suit everyone. I find I love the shimmery side, but not the matte side (at all). And the doesn’t really seem to be much cohesion between the two sides at all. Just like the UD Heavy Metals palette, this could have been released in two separate palettes.
My favourite shades were Tipsy, CEO, Drunk Texts (an awful name for a lovely shade) and No Regrets.
I see a lot of nice shades here! Drunk texr in particular is tempting as it’s the perfect type of smokey neutral – not too warm or cool – that we aren’t seeing a lot these days. I find this combo in general to offer a lot of shades we aren’t seeing much right now but which have been staples in the past for me. I’m on a low-buy so I probably won’t get it, but if it’s Not LE maybe I can pick it up in several months.
I sortof wish the trios could pop out or split apart though, as this would make it soo much more usable in my opinion and also travel-friendly.
I really don’t want to want this. I hate the packaging in so many ways (its size, the fact that it will probably get messy fast, and its pretty people inside joke decor to name just a few) but there are 8 colors that I love that I can’t really dupe. I’m also trying to cut back, inventory what I have, and work on artistry type stuff rather than just admiring and occasionally swatching my collection.
I think I come down on `I don’t need it’ though those 8 colors may haunt me.
I’m impressed how they managed to pick some unusual colors. It’s been a while since something’s come out that I can’t dupe this badly.
Christine, do you use a primer, and if you do, do you set the primer? I have the palette and find that the mattes (especially the greens) are extremely dry and pigmented, which makes them quite difficult to blend. I also had trouble with the blues! It seemed that the base colour disappeared when I would take a brush to blend the edges, leaving an awkward situation with shimmers and some semblance of a pre-existing dark base.
Tested it the same as I always do, which is without primer 🙂
I don’t like tacky or heavier bases/primers (generally) and use thinner primers like Smashbox 24HR Primer, so I wouldn’t set or add anything on top to those. What are you using?
Thanks for the review, Christine! I really wanted this palette when I first saw it pop up on Sephora. I’m glad I waited for the review. I do not see myself wearing those ultra warm shadows on the left side of the palette at all so the value of a palette is lost for me. I’m taking a pass. Nice to see good quality tho!
I love the colors of this palette and have been wanting to try Melt for a while. But this layout of the palette is wild. And since I’ve heard that Melt does have a bit of pan fallout, putting a color on top of another color seems like a bad idea for long time use!
I checked and I can’t adequately dupe this! I’m thinking this will be my first Melt purchase if I can find it here. If not, I’ll have to ship it to my daughter and wait for my Thanksgiving visit home.
Seeing as it’s on sale at Sephora now, did anyone figure out how to depot these? Are they magnetized only or magnetized and glue down? The only thing that keeps me from getting it is the prospect of having to store this bulky packaging – I’m running out of room.
