MAC She's a Model Eyeshadow x 9 Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
MAC She’s a Model Eyeshadow x 9 Palette
MAC She’s a Model Eyeshadow x 9 Palette ($32.00 for 0.18 oz.) includes nine, miniature-sized eyeshadows in a black compact with a clear lid. It’s an interesting mix of colors, because it contains seven neutrals, which run cooler compared to most neutral-hued shades. There are two pops of color–a brighter yellow and a blackened blue-teal–with the yellow being the harder shade to incorporate, at least for me. The quality is so-so with some shades under-performing and others being decent to good.
Fresh Blade is a pale, yellowed gold with warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, smooth consistency that was blendable and easy to work with. It wore well for eight hours on me. Laura Mercier Seashell (P, $29.00) is darker (95% similar). NARS Newbury Street (DC, $25.00) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Sydney Grace Hidden Treasure (P, $6.25) is darker, cooler (95% similar). LORAC Unlocked (PiP, $19.00) is brighter (95% similar). Becca Chardonnay (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). Estee Lauder Blonde Gold (LE, $45.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Coloured Raine Glisten (DC, $6.99) is more shimmery (95% similar). Kevyn Aucoin Iced Gold (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). Gilded Lids is a slightly bright, medium yellow with warm undertones and a satiny sheen. It had nice color payoff with a lightly dusty, thinner consistency that applied decently on the skin but tended to look uneven and somewhat sheered out. This shade would work better over a primer for sure. On its own, the color wore for eight hours. NARS Reborn (DC, $25.00) is lighter (90% similar). Viseart Bright Editorial #7 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). BH Cosmetics Foil Eyes #26 (PiP, ) is more shimmery, brighter (90% similar). Fab Accent is a medium-dark beige with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. The powder had a really smooth, finely-milled consistency, but it tended to sheer out and was hard to get true-to-pan coverage out of the color. This shade wore well for seven and a half hours. Dance in the Dark is a dark, taupe-brown with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a firmer consistency that required a denser brush/heavier hand to work with. Big Attitude is a medium taupe-brown with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a smooth, but thin, consistency. Not Basic Black is a medium-dark, taupe-brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a barely-there satin shimmer. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque pigmentation with a firmer press, which made it harder to work with overall. I wish this one would have blended out more easily. On me, it showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear. theBalm #15 (P, $6.50) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Ashbury (LE, $17.00) is warmer (95% similar). She’s a Model is a blackened, bluish-teal with fine blue shimmer over a mostly matte finish. The consistency was on the dusty side, which made it prone to sheering out but also made it appear a bit drier and more uneven on the skin. It can be built-up to some degree, but it’s a shade best patted into place in small areas and then using a separate, fluffier brush to blend out the edges. It lasted for eight hours on me. Marc Jacobs Beauty Pea-cocky (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter (95% similar). YSL Fetiche #5 (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Chanel Road Movie #3 (PiP, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Chanel Fascination #4 (PiP, ) is cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Burnout (LE, $4.50) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Indigogo (LE, $17.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Melt Cosmetics Fixated (PiP, ) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Urban Decay Radio (PiP, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). LORAC Menace (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Chanel Blurry Blue #3 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Monaco (LE, $4.50) is darker, warmer (80% similar). I do like that the neutrals run cooler, but all of the swatches here look so ho-hum. Nothing really stands out, think will need a cream base to make these colors pop
It’s not spectacular, not the worst!
strangely enough I kind of like the colors…could just be because i have been craving eyeshadows lately…you know…kind of like when you go to the grocery store when you’re hungry…you pick up things you know you shouldn’t :-p
Haha! 😉
I really got this feeling too! Like a ‘ravioli’ palette for a quick nosh! Not sure if I’m terrible or just suceptible to cravings right now… The teal and yellow look lush though and the palette overall looks well put-together….
This is very pretty but I have been so disappointed in the x9 palettes that I must pass. I had given them more than a fair chance, having bought several of the x9 palettes. But IMP they just do not compare to the 15 pan palettes, or the individual shadows. Yet I do love cooler leaning colors….
The 15-pan palettes have definitely been better overall!
Easy pass now that I’ve seen real photos of these shades. I looked brighter overall but this palette has a lot of dusty tones to it.
Glad to help!
Interesting combination of shades in this one!
True!
Not a bad grade, but I can dupe it. The Model colored is such a pretty blackened teal. Too bad MAC didn’t get it quite right.
Glad you have some dupes, Rachel!
She’s a Model is so strange – it looks like such a bright blue/teal in the pan but it swatches like a smokey blue-grey shade not at all like how it looks in the pan. There are some nice colours in this but also some that I’d never wear and a few that are really disappointing in terms of their performance.
It’s very, very dark – loses a lot of that brightness, I think, once on.
She’s a model looks awful! Really disappointing compared to how it looks in the pan!
It really could be better!
Such a pretty eye look you got going on here, but that blue looks sad, though! Why oh why couldn’t they get that teal spot on?!?
As I already have Cool Complement, Fresh Blade and 2 Dance In The Dark’s, this one is a skip.
Thank you, Nancy!
Wow. I am the only one who thinks a.) these look like a lot of colors in the permanent range with different names, and b.) the overall mix is just “meh”?
There are a lot of similar shades in the permanent range, since there are a lot of neutral shades!
I don’t find this color scheme aesthetically pleasing :/
It is an interesting composition!
It reminds me of when the Maybelline Color Tattoo eyeshadows first came out, and there was a weird selection of colors–orange, grey, teal, etc. and somebody said it looked like a little boy had picked out the colors. ^__^
That is so fitting!!
Yes it is strange having the yellow colour in there – very random. And it is a shame that the blue shade (the hero of the palette) is so average. Looking on the dupe list for these colours has shown that MAC has stacks of dupes for all of them – and better ratings too. I can’t understand that why you could create a great shade for one palette and an under whelming one for another.
Anyway – lovely eye look Christine, as usual.
It definitely makes it different than the usual palette, I suppose! 🙂
So-so quality: easy pass
Agreed!
This really reminds me of the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Palette ?
I can see some similarity!
I so agree with you! I have bought this palette recently and some shades are so damn pigmented and last longer than the others. I haven’t tried the blue shade in the palette yet! 🙂
