ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks
Just released, there are five new, limited edition shades of ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.), which you’ll find reviewed below. Unsurprisingly, the colors were really interesting and perfect for their current 90s theme, as well as fall, but I had issues with the dry down on these… three of them felt like they never dried down. The color didn’t lift easily when I pressed my lips together, but it was clear that they weren’t completely dry, even after twenty minutes, and after wearing them for testing, they still never had that totally dry, ultra matte look. You have plenty of time to work with the ones that don’t dry down, so at least there’s that. It’s almost like a new product type, vinyl matte.
ColourPop Bad Habit Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “dusty mauve pink.” It’s a muted, medium-dark pinky plum with cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had rich, opaque color payoff with a thin, liquid-y consistency that applied with smooth, even coverage. This one never fully dried down to me, even though I could press my lips without destroying the coverage/evenness of the color–it just didn’t go to fully matte. It wore well for six hours, but it seemed to break down more with food than the Ultra Mattes that dry down. The formula was neither drying nor hydrating on me. Bite Beauty Mauvember 2017 (LE, $24.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Bite Beauty Barberry (LE, $24.00) is lighter, glossier (95% similar). Makeup Geek Marriage Material (P, $12.00) is lighter, more muted (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Thomas (P, $36.00) is lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay WSM (P, $18.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Makeup Geek Lively (P, $15.00) is lighter (90% similar). NARS Haze (LE, $26.00) is lighter (90% similar). Burberry Bright Plum (P, $34.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Moody Bloom (P, $10.00) is cooler, glossier (90% similar). Tarte Perf (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Afterglow (LE, $10.00) is lighter, cooler, glossier (85% similar). NARS Save the Queen (P, $26.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Amorous (P, $19.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier (85% similar). MAC Private Party (LE, $19.00) is lighter, more muted, warmer (90% similar). Anastasia #5 (Vol. 1) (PiP, ) is darker, more muted, warmer (85% similar). MAC Beck and Call (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (85% similar). MAC Fashion Revival (LE, $19.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Songbird (P, $7.00) is brighter, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Ice Cube (DC, $5.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Acai (LE, $19.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
ColourPop Chilly Chili Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “muted plummy brown.” It’s a muted, dark brown with hints of rose and warmth. It had a semi-matte finish due to the formula never fully drying down, so it had a vinyl-like look to it. The color coverage was intense, and a little went a long way. The color lasted for six and a half hours with even fading, while it was comfortable to wear, it was a smidgen drying. Tarte Crop Top (P, $20.00) is warmer, glossier (90% similar). Maybelline Toasted Truffle (P, $7.99) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Rock Sand (P, $20.00) is lighter, less glossy (90% similar). Anastasia Latte (P, $18.00) is lighter (85% similar). LORAC Tres Chic (LE, ) is glossier (90% similar). MAC Dearly Beloved (LE, $19.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Bite Beauty Brioche (P, $24.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). KVD Beauty Hawkwind (P, $20.00) is cooler, less glossy (90% similar). ColourPop Love Bug (DC, $6.50) is brighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Christopher (P, $36.00) is cooler (85% similar). Bite Beauty Smoked Za'atar (LE, $26.00) is darker, glossier (85% similar). NARS Just What I Needed (P, $26.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Pat McGrath Lavish (DC, $40.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Ben (P, $36.00) is darker (85% similar). ColourPop Stud (PiP, $7.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop TooLips (P, $7.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (85% similar). ColourPop Limbo (DC, $6.50) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Tarte Fortune (P, $20.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty In Deep (P, $55.00) is darker, brighter (80% similar). ColourPop Grunge (P, $7.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. ColourPop First Class Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “vivid orange red.” It’s a bold, bright, totally neon orange-red with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had decent pigmentation, but the consistency was on the watery side, so it applied streakily and took a lot of work to maneuver into place. It dried down completely, though it didn’t seem as flat matte as other shades that dry down, and it had a tendency to come away in flakes over time, even if wear was closer to six hours. Urban Decay Tilt (P, $18.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Augmented Reality (LE, $19.00) is darker, more muted (95% similar). MAC Lady Danger (P, $19.00) is darker, warmer, less glossy (95% similar). NARS Annabella (P, $34.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). Bite Beauty Cayenne (DC, $26.00) is darker, more muted, glossier (95% similar). Make Up For Ever C403 (DC, $22.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Bite Beauty San Francisco (LE, $26.00) is darker (90% similar). Makeup Geek Salsa (LE, $12.00) is more muted (90% similar). Estee Lauder Volatile (P, $32.00) is less glossy (95% similar). ColourPop Cruella (LE, $8.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). NYX Indie Flick (P, $6.00) is lighter (90% similar). Bite Beauty #008 (LE, $36.00) is lighter (90% similar). Dose of Colors Hot Fire (LE, $18.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Fashion Legacy (P, $21.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Hourglass Raven (P, $28.00) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). NYX Pure Red (P, $6.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Flame (06) (P, $55.00) is lighter, less glossy (95% similar). ColourPop Succulent (LE, $6.50) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). ColourPop Trapeze (P, $7.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Dangerous (P, $19.00) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
ColourPop Instigator Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “mid-tone peachy nude.” It’s a muted, medium-dark peach-orange with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. This was the third shade that didn’t fully dry down, and I had the same experience where the color didn’t lift after pressing my lips together, but it remained lightly tacky. It lasted for five hours, and this one “cracked” a little after an hour of wear. It was neither drying nor hydrating. ColourPop Spring Roll (P, $10.00) is warmer, glossier (95% similar). ColourPop Parker (P, $7.00) is lighter, glossier (85% similar). Tarte Homeslice (P, $20.00) is lighter (95% similar). Maybelline Naked Coral (P, $7.99) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). MAC Down to an Art (P, $19.00) is warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Hollywood (P, $18.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Make Up For Ever Gutsy Blush (106) (P, $23.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Anastasia Kiss (P, $18.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Mull It Over (P, $22.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Sephora Melon (P, $14.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Cherie (LE, $55.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC Pumpkin (LE, $25.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (85% similar). ColourPop With the Band (P, $7.00) is lighter (85% similar). ColourPop Electric Feel (LE, $7.00) is lighter (85% similar). ColourPop Hua Mulan (LE, $10.00) is darker, warmer, glossier (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
ColourPop More Better Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep violet wine.” It’s a dark, berry-red with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage that dried down quickly but with enough time to apply it. The texture was soft, a little dry in feel to the touch, and it lasted for five hours on me–but it faded unevenly. It was somewhat drying. NARS Blindfold (LE, $27.00) is lighter (95% similar). Milani Flirt (LE, $8.99) is darker (90% similar). Illamasqua Shard (P, $24.00) is cooler (90% similar). NARS Under My Thumb (P, $26.00) is warmer (95% similar). Smashbox Jam On It (P, $21.00) is cooler, glossier (90% similar). Make Up For Ever M102 (DC, $22.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Framboise Moi (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Tarte Hangry (P, $20.00) is darker, more muted, cooler (90% similar). Guerlain #80 (P, $33.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop LBD (LE, $10.00) is darker, more muted (85% similar). ColourPop Scrooge (LE, $6.50) is lighter (85% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Festival Magic (Was Glastonberry) (P, $37.00) is darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Formula Summary: ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a long-wearing, pigmented lipstick that starts off glossy and dries down quickly to that super flat matte finish. They have minimal transfer with some of the lighter shades having almost none for the first few hours of wear, but any time you’ve had a meal, they lose that transfer-resistant quality to a noticeable degree. They tend to wear anywhere from six to ten hours with darker shades maintaining better color coverage and wear over a longer period of time. Some shades get a little drying about two-thirds to three-fourths through the wear, while a few shades have been fairly non-drying even many hours into wear. They fade away evenly with most color loss occurring from the center of the lips if eating a more oil-based meal but the majority of color survives a meal. Reapplication has been hit or miss and tends to depend on how well it wore away and how easily the shade applies normally, but reapplication tends to emphasize the lip’s natural texture significantly compared to initial application and gives lips a very wrinkled, dried-up look. I’ve layered gloss on top of some shades with moderate success, though it will obviously lose the matte finish and will transfer and I’ll get tiny flakes where the matte lip color has lifted by mixing with gloss but has been pretty minimal. The formula had no discernible taste or scent.

Bad Habit is stunning! I bet that one will sell out quickly, unfortunately for me, and all the dupes are LE too!
Awww!
I was wondering why Bad Habit looked so pretty to me, then I saw Barberry was a dupe. Since I own Barberry, no need to get BH.
Haha! ;D
“Unsurprisingly, the colors were really interesting and perfect for their current 90s theme, as well as fall” hahaha! So true, their fall collection is perfect!
They truly nailed it – an awesome launch and the colors are not just perfect for fall, but perfect for the theme!
Great colors, but the formula is just so inconsistent from color to color and on person to person. I think it would take a truly extraordinary shade for me to buy more Ultra Mattes.
I totally agree! I never know if it’ll be love or hate.
On the bright side, they’re cheap enough if it’s a hate, at least we haven’t wasted much money.
I love the “vinyl” finish. They all look pretty, especially the first two.
It’s interesting, that’s for sure!
I like the colors Bad Habit, Chilly Chili (hello 90s!) and More Better, but will stick with traditional lipsticks –the formula is a lot more hydrating (esp. for winter) and forgiving
So 90s and I love it!
I ordered Bad Habit, More Better and Chilly Chili last night and I already received my tracking number! I can’t wait to get these in the mail!
Woohoo!! Enjoy your new shades, Miss Jae!
These are all really interesting and great looking. I bought all 5….I am sure Instigator will be my least worn of the bunch. But oh…bad habit is GORGEOUS.
The shades are nice hues!
These shades are all so gorgeous! I must have them!
Yay!
Hmmm, More Better vs CT Glastonberry…decisions, decisions.
No surprise here that of course, I am loving Chilly Chili, More Better and Bad Habit!
Chilly Chili *may* be easier to resist since I have Royally Riotous and as of last night, MAC Deep Love too. Which looks a gazillion times better on me than Antique Velvet! More noticeably burgundy brown not rusty brown.
Tough call there, one is so much cheaper, lol.
I’m ok with them not drying so the way, I can just reapply. I know many others will be disappointed. I’m in love with the colors so I’ll sacrifice performance for looking pretty. Ordering these yesterday was a complete disaster! Took about an hour! Announcing an exact time was not a great idea.
Nice! Glad they’ll work for you, Trina.
Sorry to hear about them being hard to order!
It seems like all the Ultra Mattes launches have been disastrous when they go live. Their website can’t take the traffic, and their supplies can’t take the demand. I know it’s because they are still a small company, but I just stay away the first day of releases now. I wait for restocks if I have to.
Perfect timing! I was on their website last night looking for new shades to purchase!!! I love Trap and Tulle and was searching to see what other shades I “need”. Really like Colourpop products.
Thanks for the review!!
My pleasure, Robin! xo
I like some of the colors going on here. So, with this “vinyl matte” finish, are they less drying? The CP liquid lippies I have-I feel like they just sink into my lip lines and suck all the moisture out of my lips.
They are a little less drying on the whole, but I don’t know that you should get any – I know you’re not a huge fan of their formula to begin with!
Okay.Your probably right. I tried a few of the 6 or 7 I bought and haven’t even touched the rest. Lol. I’m skipping.
Bad Habit is lovely!
It is!
I bought Bad Habit and More Better already. I hope I like them on me. I’m not crazy about them in these photos, but I’m sure I’ll be happy anyway.
Fingers crossed you love ’em!
Bad Habit, More Better, and Chilly Chili are stunning colors! That’s interesting that these seem to be different (vinyl matte) from the original Ultra Mattes. Can’t wait to get mine. You look great Christine, thanks for the review!
Thank you, Kat! 😀
I saw the launch teaser and was lamenting that I could not justify getting any of these, but you’re swatches helped in that ColourPop Bad Habit was probably the only colour I would be able to rock.
Great fall shades but a pass for now.
They are perfect for fall!
I was getting ready to make an order and I’m glad I checked here first! Your swatches of Chilly Chili look sooo much warmer than swatches on Instagram, which show it as almost a grey tinged reddish purple. Imo a lot of people hope for grey tinged colors on there and sometimes I feel like they miiiight mess with the colors a bit or use cooler toned lighting. Both are lovely shades and I know colors show up differently on everyone, but this shade in particular seems a bit like a catfish, haha. Thank you as always for detailed, helpful reviews! 🙂
I am warmer-toned so that could be it! I do find a lot of the really “cool” gray-taupe shades pull a little warmer on me than some. So hard to say, though, as those are the shades that often change depending on light/tone/makeup more so than say, blue!
*slides money across table and wipe lone tear from eye* More Better, Chilly Chilli, and Bad Habit please. IDK what you and ColourPop have against me saving money but whatever. I’m going for it!
?
LOL!! I’m scared for their holiday launches!
These are all sooooo beautiful, you wear them so well! I’m always amazed at how flattering and beautiful so many different shades of lipstick are on you! I also have an issue with the whole idea of something being “flattering” or not on someone. Beauty is so subjective, flattering is a matter of opinion and nothing else, so I don’t like it when people remark that something is “unflattering” on someone else. I’m also a firm believer in wearing whatever makes you feel good, no matter whether or not people think its “flattering”.
I really want to order More better and Chilly Chili, and maybe bad habit – but I’m concerned about the formula on all these newer releases..I don’t like the feeling of my lips sticking together when I press them together, which I tend to do compulsively, and it sounds like these would do thi . Oh, btw Christine, I am mostly loving OFRA’s liquid lipstick formula, and highly recommend that you give it a go! (I say mostly because I ordered like 14 of them and not all are perfect, much like any brand of liquid lipstick, but most are fantastic in my opinion so far).
One other semi-related comment – looking at the dupes for Chilly Chili, I’m totally surprised at how few dupes there are that are actually like REAL dupes (90% or more) for
oops, posted before finishing that!
like I was saying – I’m surprised at the few amount of dupes, despite the fact that every brand is now releasing brown lipsticks! I think brown lippies is this seasons’ purples lippies. They’re sort of few and far between and all kind of different because its the early stages, but pretty soon there’s probably gonna be brown lipsticks from every brand and a lot more similar dupes between brands, like the purples are (finally!!!) getting to be. anyway, just a thought. 😉
They definitely… stick and then pull apart… a lot like sweaty skin on vinyl, lol.
Ick that sounds pretty awful!!
Bad Habit looks stunning!
It is a nice hue!
based on the tube , i thought chilly chili would be a burnt orange . turns out it’s more of a muted brown .
thought it looked close to limbo based on swatches i’ve seen on instagram , so i was gonna pass .
however , based on your swatches , i’m now tempted .
reminds me of kapow in the sense that the color in the tube is misleading .
When I was labeling the photos, I was like, “Chili is the orange one, right?” NOPE, haha.
Although this is completely subjective, I couldn’t think of a worse name for a lipstick than “More Better”. Yuck! Cringeworthy for sure.
My favorite color-wise has to be Chilly Chili, even though brown lips have been ‘in’ for a while this color seems different somehow, it looks lovely!
I’m sure that was the point, lol!
I just did a colourpop order on Monday or Tuesday! I wish I’d known these were being released because I would have waited a few days. Bad Habit looks really pretty and nothing like anything I already have. The email they sent said there were a limited quantity too… Maybe they’ll eventually make it permanent.
Ahhh! I couldn’t resist. I went ahead and ordered it! 🙂
Yeah, I was like, limited quantity… that is limited edition, right? LOL!
Haha! Exactly. I was like, it’s only six bucks… Just get it! 🙂
Chilly Chili is a real Kylie Jenner shade, I like it. And wow, First Class really pops, I love it.
First Class is SO bright!
I loooove Bad Habit and especially More Better! But I’m eyeing some other fall collections, especially Isadora’s new matte lippies, and I have to save money for christmas presents 🙁 (I need to plan far ahead or I’ll spend all my money on makeup!)
SO much stuff !! 🙁
Ok, I caved and ordered,Chilly Chili, Bad Habit and More Better and Finally Kapow! Which was out of stock forever…… I kept coming back to your swatches to see which ones I was going to order. I have a deep skin tone and was skeptical about “bad habit” but decided to give it a try for 6 buckaroos! Now about the application; Vinyl-like kind of scares me because I have become addicted to the original ultra matte finishes. Even though, they are as dry as the Amazon Desert, I have accepted the colourpop ultra matte lip challenge! Maybe, I would actually like these, just hope that they wont stick together on the lippies!
Thanks Christine!
My pleasure as always, Chanel! 🙂
Beautiful swatches. I do wish some permanent dupes could be provided for Bad Habit- it’s gorgeous!
Here’s hoping more brands will put out these under-appreciated shades!
Wish I had seen this before I placed my order! I bought Chilly Chili (which I’m super excited for) and More Better. Unfortunately I own MAC Fashion Revival and NARS Scarlet Empress which is also very similar… I guess now I also have an ultra matte version?
Keep me posted on how they work for you Molly! They are nice colors at least 🙂
I managed to snag Bad Habit and Chilly Chili. These will be my first ColourPop lippies, since there was such a frenzy leading to sold out items when the collection was first released. I think I’m more excited about these fall shades than the other colors, anyway!
Keep me posted on how you like them, Toni! 🙂 I think you’re going to be gorgeous in both though!
I think I like this finish better. The other ones look so drying.
Yeah I received mine on Saturday and tried them and they weren’t the same as the original. It felt more like Kat Von D’s everlasting lipsticks, matte but never quite dried. I e-mailed them about it and they told me they had indeed reformulated so that it wasn’t as drying, but that’s what I loved about them! There was no transfer at all! I don’t know if this will keep me from buying more, but either way I have far too many as it is.
I should have read your review before ordering!!! Chilly Chili is way darker than I thought it would be from judging the tube. You do the BEST reviews, thank you!!!
My pleasure, Patsy!
ColourPop describe Bad Habit as “dusty mauve pink”, then I realize that they also describe the same for Clueless, but those two aren’t even alike. Weird. I think Bad Habit should be “muted plummy pink”? Because IMO Clueless fits the “dusty mauve pink” better.. Right?
I wonder why they did that!
Hi Christine:
Do you find the formula of the newer released liquid lipsticks better (as in more comfortable to wear) than the original, first release? I’m thinking of buying Beeper, Chilly Chili, and Teeny Tiny, but reluctant bc liquid lipstick formulas can be a hit or miss for my sensitive lips. For reference, I do really like KVD (new formula), Girlactik, & ABH, but found Dose of Colors & Stila too drying. Any advice regarding my CP dilemma?
They’re hit or miss for me! I haven’t tried Dose of Colors, and maybe just one shade from Stila (I don’t remember much from it), so it’s hard for me to compare! ABH is drying for me, usually.
I’ve got my hands on More Better a couple of days ago and have been wearing it to test it out. The colour is absolutely bang on the buck beautiful; I’ve been getting compliments from everywhere! However, it transfers like crazy. It is not at all eat proof, drink proof or kiss proof. You just smudge it with a finger to remove it, that’s that. It does stain the lip after you have removed it with a makeup remover (or just plain water and a foaming cleanser). This transferring tendency was a big disappointment for me as I was expecting LA Splash Lip Couture or Smitten Lip Tint Mousse kind of performance. Those are like matte af, and can endure anything (including the oiliest Indian food).
I haven’t tried either of those!
